Nerd parenting alert.

Little Golden Books has a solid early reader offering in its Star Wars Heroes and Villains series (available as a compendium of all seven, which is this one & how I bought it, or as individual titles).

The _I am a Princess_ entry does a good job debunking the misconception that princesses are pretty in pink and nothing more. My 6yo son loved it. He is a strong reader for his age, and yet new decoding in this little gem included: guardian, adoptive, ambassador, allies, devotes. Illustrations for the story show Leia's life in many iconic scenes from birth through TFA-era General Organa.

Other entries in the series include words like influence, entire, apprentice, gangster, navigate, squadron, spread, concocted, embody.

Women are shown as both heroes (Rey, Leia, Padme, assorted Jedi) and villains (Phasma).

The last book within this compendium is _I am a Stormtrooper_. Mostly talks about villains, as you might expect, but the penultimate page introduces FN-2187 as a a Stormtrooper who broke his training. Turn page, final picture in the entire seven-book collection is Finn in that snowy forest, looking both terrified and brave, clutching the blue light saber and the words "and became a HERO of the Resistance!" Close back cover.

There are no other pages or ads to compete for the reader's attention -- just Finn, alone, committed to doing the right thing even though it was really, really hard. Wonderful ending note for a kid to carry in her/his head for a few hours.

This isn't high literature, obviously, but you could do a lot worse for early elementary SSR or kid-led read alouds. I feel like the messaging is good, but doesn't hit you on the head with a cast iron skillet. :)

It was a cute little book and just what I was looking for to use as a "lazy reads" day. I imagine it's a good book for young kids to read so they can understand these concepts then trying to pick them out through the movies, and even the books.
