Uncertain whether she is human or not, Helena is forced to undergo new nightmares while her mental battle continues with a demon called 'Lazarus'. Without her guardian angel to protect her, she is left to rely on vampires who have their own reasons for everything.
The attraction between her and Lucious grows, whether it is a side effect of the soul-bond they share or of their own volition. Yet, how can they be certain?
With the help of her new friends, they must seek out a Demon Gate and enter the Demon Realm to stop Lazarus from claiming her and Lucious' souls. But, will they succeed or perish as the only weapon that can kill a demon has been lost centuries ago.

Another great story by May Freighter! Filled with more action, secrets, romance and vampires, Helena learning if she's human or not without her guardian angel. The banter between Helena and Lucious is so quick, I love how he looks at her when she doesn't notice. Five stars!
Who would have thought? Vampires might be our better angels.
The second installment of the Helena Hawthorne series finds our protagonist in quite a difficult situation. Helena is put to the test beyond psychological endurance. Not only is she finding stuff about herself that is raising doubts about things taken as a given (her humanity, for one), but her token of protection is out of the picture.
When placed between a rock and a hard place, or in this case, between demonic forces and obliteration. It's time to rely on an unexpected vampire ally that might or not become something more.
There are certain requirements when writing paranormal romance, details that separate this category from other novels of romantic pursuits. It's something I like to call the edge: that feeling that, as an audience, we will never settle in safe ground.
May Freighter's book is a reminder of that cardinal rule. Oh, Helena! I want to root for you (and Luscious) but I can never forget what we are dealing with!
This is an amazing addition to this series. And just like with the first book... I want more.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. The second book of Helena Hawthorn adventures was as good as the first with plot twists after twists, charcters highly colored and a good balance of descriptions and adventures. After being introduced to the vampires and saint, Helena confronts with the demon hunting her dreams. In her fight for her reason she makes friends that could even be family and is gambling with the devil to stay alive. She mights loose more than what she bargained for and makes more ennemy than she can contains. As for Lucious he discover that using Helena is far from easy especially when his feelings and history get in the way.
The book as I can say it is another masterpiece of the best author ever. I am very pleased as the main character pulled through every problem. She faced it with courage and bravery that not many possesses. I think that the one time isn´t enough to satisfy my thirst for reading this book. I recommend Demon Gates. It is not possible to not have it in the collection of the best fantasy. Demon Gates is must on everyone´s shelves in the small flats or the biggest libraries.
This is book two of the Helena Hawthorn series and sees Helena still cursed by the presence of the demon, Lazarus, who wants to claim her soul, and is making her sleeping moments into nightmares. She no longer has her guardian angel Michael, after something apparently changed in her and she can no longer be called a saint or have his protection. What exactly she is, no one will actually tell her! Her relationship with Lucious is changing, with her attraction to him growing, but he is a vampire who she was warned against touching soul strings with, back when Michael took her to the Angel Realm. This has left her and Lucious soul bond and his best friend and fellow vampire, Alexander, has told him to make her fall in love with him, so he can control her and whatever powers come with her being a saint. Not that she is anymore! Helena can’t tell whether her feelings towards Lucious are to do with their soul bond or if she is truly attracted to him. She feels guilty that her best friend Andrew died and she had to get Lucious to turn him, into a vampire, as she couldn’t stand for him to die. But Andrew wants her to like him in a romantic manner, so it is probably a good thing that Lucious sent his ‘childe’ Andrew, away to learn about being a vampire and to learn how to control his thirst for blood. Helena’s flatmate and long-time family friend and bestie Laura, has been in her life as long as she can remember, but she disappears at a key moment and won’t answer Helena’s calls. Finding her grandmother’s grimoire and another missing item of hers hidden in Laura’s bedroom, raises more questions than answers. She can remember living with her grandmother for some time, but can’t remember what happened to her or why she had a grimoire.
It seems Helena had some witch in her ancestry and when she gets annoyed at Alexander and Lucious, she is able to control their movements, spouting some unknown language that even she doesn’t know how she did! She is ever changing, with her body temperature going down, whilst Lucious is getting warmer, and their heartbeats are even beginning to merge into sync, and yes, that is Lucious now with a heartbeat, which as a vampire is a bit odd! Laura takes her to meet another saint, Nadine, whose guardian angel is Horus, but her life has been quite difficult and she is very powerful. She tells Helena of a special dagger she will need to use to kill a demon and trying to get it will leave her and Lucious in more danger than ever before. Another pair of people will be with them on this next step of the journey, but whether Maya and Ben can actually be called allies, is another question, as they are both Hunters, and vampires are their mortal enemies! Lucious has issues when he goes into ‘descent’, with his bloodlust suddenly out of control and only Helena or her sire Anna, able to help him. He has broken one of the taboos of the vampire world and drank from another vampire he was torturing to get answers. Now he can’t drink his normal blood and is unable to overcome his ‘descent’ easily the second time round.
The head of the vampire council, Eliza, who is a councilwoman and should actually be equally to the other councilmen and women, has been keeping Lucious’ sire Anna prisoner in the council HQ and Anna has been sworn not to tell him what Eliza wants of her. One of Eliza’s allies took Helena prisoner previously and she has the bad memories from that time still. Eliza is definitely up to something and somehow Helena and Lucious are part of her plans and not in a good way. Helena and Maya have been marked by the demon and they find they must go through a Demon Gate to face Lazarus in the Demon Realm. To get through the gate, they will need a powerful magic user and Vincent, another councilman, is the one to provide a blood witch to them, Madeline. But she is not enough for what they need and Helena must rely on the Reaver, or should that be his strange daughter Nora, to provide more magical power. Someone is keeping a huge secret from them however, and nothing will go quite as it should, with Helena being forced to regain memories of her past that will horrify her! Not all who go through the Demon Gate are going to make it back, especially in the same condition they left in! Helena will have her regrets and have made another enemy through no fault of her own. So much more still to come for Helena and Lucious and nothing will be easy. The soul bond between them is something no one has seen before, nor know what to expect from it. Lucious is definitely finding himself changing and regretting what he has done in the past, but also believing he is not good enough for Helena, no matter what Alexander tries to push him to do. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and had bought the first few books years ago, but never gotten around to reading them. A long read with characters you need to know from the first in the series, or it may take more time to make sense of it. But if you love magic, vampires, demons and more, then this is an ideal series! Reading about a character named after an aunt who sadly recently passed, keeps her name alive and was a push to get the book read at last. I have given my own opinion of the book above.
Demon Gates is the second book in the Helena Hawthorn series. It follows the life of Helena as she tries to stay alive while dealing with a crazy demon, a bond with a handsome vampire, strange and warm feelings for said vampire, the anger and sarcasm of the vamp's best friend, and so much more. Honestly, I don't even know how she can stand all the drama that constantly knocks are her door. I would have probably shouted my lungs out if I had to face half of what she did. It kind of makes me admire her, though I wish she didn't give Lucious such a hard time. Then again, I have always been a softie when it comes to alpha heroes with a protective side. In this book, I kind of got mad at Andrew. There were times when I wanted to slap him because of how cruel he could be to Helena. He should have his friend's back and that includes playing nice with the girl! Another character that broke my heart is Michael. I won't tell how but as you read this book, you will feel the pain Helena felt because of him. This book was filled with mystery, anger, fear and so many dark and strong emotions that crushed my heart little by little but it was so intense that I couldn't let go and I am so glad I didn't.
Helena is up to her neck in trouble. Lazarus is intent on trying to claim Lucious and her bonded soul. Helena and Lucious are going to have to travel to the demon realm and fight him. But this is not going to be easy as Helena has learned that she may not be human and she starts doubting herself. She can’t really on Michael to help her and must accept the help from the vampires. But they have their own plans for her.
Helena has some seriously tough challenges in front of her but she steps up and marches through them like a true hero. I loved Lucious and how he is falling more for Helena and finding it harder to just use her for his own gains. And have to say that Alexander drives me up the wall with his behavior sometimes but you can tell that Lucious and Alexander have had each other’s backs for a long time. The more you learn about the both of them the more I enjoyed reading about them.
This series is going strong with a great story, lots of twists and turns, and still not fully knowing who Helena can trust. I love it and strongly recommend it.
I received Demon Gates from Silver Dagger Book Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
This story was fantastic, it just wasn’t anything like I was expecting. The blurb represents such a tiny portion of what happens in this book, and that left me so breathless. Helena is taken through so many twists and turns, misdirections and double-crosses. Alongside Helena, we learn so much about the supernatural world she’s been drawn into. However, with every question answered, two more spring up in its place as the new information opens up new avenues of investigation. I can’t wait to see where this series takes us next. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
And i thought this story couldn't get any better after the first book...boy, how wrong was i? This is an amazing story that will keep you on your toes every step of the way, it is a highly addictive read that you won't want to put down but then won't want it to end either!
I love the way that this author has created this world! It's a world where literally anything can happen and believe me it does!! The talent of this writer is just amazing, how she can create such a realistic and imaginative world that you immerse yourself in as you read and you don't want o leave. I can't wait to start the next book, especially with how this book ended. The surprises just keep coming, right until the end!
This storyline held me captive from the first sentence to the last it is such an exciting plotline, there is so much that i would love to say but as there are so many twists and turns in this book i would not reveal these surprises. I can assure future readers that it is definitely worth the read, this book is a definate 5* review on the storyline alone.
The more i read about Lucious the more i adore his character and thirst to know more about him and his past that makes him who he is, i love his friendship with Alexander, you can tell they have been through so much together. I also love that you begin to so the real Alexander i have really taken to his character and would love to know more about him and what has made him the way that he is.The more i read about Helena the more i adore her, i love her strength to battle through situation that are far from the normal life that she used to have, the life she still craves. I adore reading about her connection to Lucious...i could read about that all day. I loved that Andrew has a bigger part in this book and he is another character that i would love to read more about!!
This is a must read read book for everyone, i can't rcommend this book highly enough!!!
Wow! This series gets more intense with each book. You never know what will happen next. Helena still doesn't know who to trust let alone her own heart. Death seems to follow her. And every decision she makes seems to make things worse. Vampires, hunters and witches seem to be everywhere. And a demon still wanting your soul doesn't help. Can't wait to read the next surprises in book three.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book.
Wow. I just finished reading Demon Gates. I can't wait to read Crumbling Control. Lucky for me I already have it in my library and ready to go! May Freighter has a way of writing characters that are believable (well, except for the whole vampire/demon thing) and make you care about what happens. I recommend this series.
The story sucked me in right from the start. I loved the book! This story has so many twists, turns and thrills and it is not the same as your usual vampire stories. The characters have a lot of depth to their personalities and it is very nicely written. I can't wait to read the rest in this series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was even more nerve wracking than the first (in a good way). So much action and emotion going on . Helena is having to face so much danger with friends who might not be her friend. There is so much suspense going on with everyone’s motives. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series because I HAVE to know what happens next.
An amazing story that will keep you on your toes every step of the way. This book have plenty of twists and suspense and interesting characters. Very romantic story without the sexy scenes. I recommend this.
This was an incredible book. I’m not even referring to the main storyline here and the whole need for Helena find a Demon Gate and enter the Demon Realm to stop Lazarus from claiming her and Lucious' bonded soul, even though that plot is done perfectly. Nor am I referring to the wonderful world-building, with its demons, angels, vampires, sirens and witches. Nope, to me it’s all about the complex, layered and superbly portrayed relationships, with the keys being bond between Helena and Lucious (and all the questions it forces to be asked) and the equally well done relationship between Lucious and Alexander. This all raises Demon Gates to a higher level, and it’s a level of wow-ness.
I really love this series. I immediately fell in love with Helena in the first book and I am even more in love after the second book!! I love the action and humor in this series, and I do love me some demons. This is a great series and I highly recommend to anyone looking for an adventure with demons and vampires!!

In Book 2, the story continues with Helena Hawthorn having bound her soul to a vampire, Lucious, and the attraction to him grows. We learn more about the characters and see Helena’s strength coming forward to battle in situations she never would have imagined in her “normal” world. She misses her guardian angel Michael who had to leave her without his protection because she isn’t completely human anymore. She continues the struggle in the nightmare battles with the demon Lazarus who has left her painfully wounded with a huge bloody hole from her ribcage to her lower abdomen. The vampires had given her enough blood to start the healing, but she was still in great pain.
To stop Lazarus from claiming both her own and Lucious' souls, they must seek out a Demon Gate to enter the Demon Realm and find Lazarus. The saint, Nadine, can locate the Demon Gate, but needs witches to provide the power to actually open it. Only one weapon is known that can kill a demon, but that weapon was allegedly owned and hidden away by a collector who would have to be tracked down; their success on their mission is still doubtful. Is there any hope they can succeed? Or will they lose everything to the demon?
This is an enjoyable, exciting read with many twists and turns. The author has been able to keep the reader in a constant state of tension as the story races along at its perfectly fast pace. The writing is so well done that the reader will feel the surroundings as if actually there, and the emotions become real. The plot is intriguing and the characters engaging, with the reader drawn to the intensely powerful relationships. Get your copy and follow along in this suspenseful adventure! It is an experience that will stay with you!
Yes! This sequel to Russian Roulette was a big win for me. I liked it better than the first one and one of the main reasons is that we get so much MORE Lucious. Yummmmm. That man could stay on every page and I'd be happy. What a sexy bad boy vampire with enough heart to steal my own. The romance was a big part of this book and probably why I loved it.
The story picks up right where the first book ended and we're immediately thrown into the action, front and center, as Helena learns of the new changes in her life. I'm excited to see where the story goes from here. I'm a huge vampire fan so to find a new and fresh take on that world plus excellent writing and a great plot is a win for me.
This is a dark PNR with some absolutely FANTASTIC world building and DEEP WELL CRAFTED characters. I was surprised time and again and worried for Helena on multiple occasions. Her bond with Lucious was both interesting and unique, the imagery used held me spellbound for most of the book, especially the last few chapters. There's so many layers and twists and turns it's just deliciously captivating.
An amazing dark PNR that you must read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Characters: 5/5 Plot: 5/5 Word Building: 5/5 Story Flow: 5/5
The second book follows Helena on the hunt to find a way how to get rid of Lazarus, meeting hunters and discovering secrets about many people in her life - including herself and her lost memories. The adventure does not give the poor girl any break, pushing her from home to Vienna to Demon realm and back, imposing fear about the safety of her friends and family. Lucious also does not have it easy with the descent and the usual vampire power games... Even though Helena is most of the time pretty much the "damsel" needing help from everyone around her, it has to be admitted she wouldn't be able to manage everything on her own, and she is very resilient - or stubborn. The bond between her and Lucious develops beyond a bond of convenience, and I like to see how he dynamics changes between the two and manages to create improbable alliances between species too. Now after the cliffhanger it is a must to continue the series :)
Demon Gates by May Freighter is the second book in the Helena Hawthorne series. At the beginning of this book, Helena is recovering from being attacked by a demon and Lucious is protecting her. It begins right where Russian Roulette ended but is a stand alone book. Demon Gates has lots of twists and turns with Helena’s life changing and her relationship with her friends and the vampire Lucious evolving. This book is full of suspense that builds page by page. The characters are amazing mix of good and evil and the difference between the two is not always so obvious. This is a wonderful read with the unusual relationship between Helena and Lucious making this book one of never ending surprise and entertainment. Demon Gates is full of surprises, danger, and the unknown.
What a wild ride this series is turning out to be! I enjoyed reading this novel as much as the first book in the series, and this book is also YA reader appropriate, or ideal for readers that love enjoying the adventure of intermingling humans and supernatural creatures without all the extra sexy times tossed in.
This story includes a wide variety of characters - hunters, vampires, demons, angels, witches...the list could go on. It's definitely a good read for people that are interested in paranormal/supernatural characters and events. I received a copy of this novel from the author but wanted to share my honest opinion about it here.
This is book 2 of the Helena Hawthorn series and it’s even better than the last book. This book is highly addictive you won’t be able to put it down I couldn’t. There is even more going on in this book I don’t know where to start with the spoilers so I won’t give out any. There are a lot of paranormal characters in this book vampires, demons, angels and the list goes on. This book is very well written with great descriptions of the characters and places, this is another fantastic book of May Freighter’s and I highly recommend it to anyone that loves the paranormal and it’s definitely worth more than 5 ⭐️.
I got this from the author for my honest opinion and review. I read the first book in this series and I just could not get enough. I could not want to see what was going to happen next. I thought Russian Roulette was great read, but Demon Gates was even better. Helena is still struggling with her battle with the demon known as Lazarus. She is basically walking with through hell to keep all those that she cares about safe. That attraction between Lucious is still growing and developing. Even if it might be a side effect of the soul bounding.
This girl can find herself in one bad situation after another. Some not of her making, but others from her own impulsiveness. Unfortunately, she has a lot of "help" along the way, and No way to determine who to trust and who is just using her. The chemistry between her and Lucious is still off the charts hot, but as complicated as it ever was. If you like a story with vampires, witches, saints, sirens and warlocks-although not all my be in the manner you know- then I think you'll love this book!
Absolutely Fabulous! Soooo much better than the first book. Sirens, demons, angels, vampires and witches are all mixed in together to give you an outstanding book. Can they stop the demon? What kind of weapon will it need? Can everyone in the group be trusted? The heroine has grown in this book and is starting to come into her own. The love angle has now grown into a triangle but her heart has now been committed to her favourite vampire. A great story on a par with Laurell Hamilton. I got this in a giveaway for an honest opinion.
AS book 2 continues where book 1 left off, the attraction between Helena and Lucious is growing stronger. With the loss of her guardian angel Michael, she must struggle without him in the demon battle against Lazarus. After being given vampire blood from the damage inflicted in the last battle, she knows she must do all she can to protect hers and Lucious's souls. Now they must venture out and find the demon gate and stop Lazarus. Looking forward to the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
*I recieved this book free from the author for my honest review*
I LOVE this story line. It reminds me of a mix of shadow hunters, twilight, and house of night.
Where do I even begin..... we were finally getting somewhere with Helena and Luscious, where did he go? Andrew is back in the picture, not gonna lie, I kinda love him. Can we trust Maya now? Is Alexander finally warming up to Helena?
There are so many unanswered questions, so many things up in the air, so many possibilities. I can't wait to see what happens, and I hope there arent too many pages before Luscious return to us
So far so good with this series. I will be continuing on with book 3 because I need to find out what the hell is going on! May Freighter has written 4 books and 2 novellas so far. Book 5 will come out in May 2018. If you are looking for sex in a book than you are shit out of luck. I do not mind reading a book without a graphic depiction of sex. This book is a true YA story. So far a good plot and characters.
