WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE PAST REFUSES TO STAY DEAD AND BURIED?
Six months have passed since the explosion at Platinum Industries.
For the first time in our lives, Bandit and I knew what it felt like to be with a loving family, and it was a lot like getting to eat a main and dessert every day, for every meal (and having starved on the streets for so long, everyone knows how much I like my food).
Things were going great and we were about to celebrate some joyful news when the inexplicable happened: Sully received an impossible message from his past, then my own demons caught up to me. Even Bandit wasn’t happy, unable to get the stray we recently rescued to like him. For whatever reason, the two dogs could not get along.
In no time, our close unit fragmented as we were each faced with our very worst nightmares until I finally found myself alone and stranded, with Sully nowhere in sight. And Bandit? He’d been dognapped. Taken by someone with evil intentions.
The thought that Bandit could be stuck in a cage again filled my heart with fury, but with my family on the brink of implosion and our enemy seemingly invisible and one step ahead of us at all times, just how was I going to save him?
A proud geek and video gamer, and champion of complex female protagonists, Jo brings her page-turning screenwriting style to books to weave well-crafted, suspenseful stories with twists you don't see coming. She writes YA books under Jo Ho and adult romance books under Joanne Ho - most of them featuring dogs!
A self-taught screenwriter, Jo's writing life began when she created the groundbreaking, critically acclaimed CBBC action fantasy television series, "Spirit Warriors," which introduced leading actress, Jessica Henwick ("Game of Thrones," "Star Wars: The Force Awakes") to the screen. Granted the biggest budget ever given to a CBBC show at the time, it was nominated for "Best Children's Programme" at the 2011 Broadcast Awards, with Jo herself, going on to win the Women in Film & Television's "New Talent" Award in 2010. Jo even made history for being the first East Asian person - man or woman - to have created a British television drama series.
Since then, Jo has worked with some of the most acclaimed producers in the world with several television shows and movies currently in development, she also writes for games. When she isn't working on her own stories, Jo helps others with their work - she is one of the BFI's (British Film Institute) recommended script consultants.
Jo suffers from MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities), a debilitating condition she has developed over the last few years which has left her mostly housebound. Unfortunately, it is still not officially recognized in the UK despite the World Health Organisation listing it as a physical disability. There is currently no help for sufferers of MCS in the UK. Unable to travel or attend meetings and writersrooms, she has lost many screenwriting opportunities but has refused to allow the condition to rule her life. Despite the wrench life has thrown at her, Jo started to write and publish books.
Her debut novel WANTED, Book 1 of the Chase Ryder series has been a bestseller in 15 YA categories. It also won top prize in the YA Sci-Fi category for the 2018 Readers' Favorite Book Awards. It is her dream to bring all of her book series to screen and she believes she can make it happen with her readers' help!
Jo lives in London and hopes to travel across America one day in a super kitted out, MCS-friendly, Zombie-apocalypse-ready RV with her lovely fella Matt, and three equally lovely kitties.
Wow I am so glad I discovered this series because i have enjoyed both of the books I have listened to and can't wait to start the final book. I do suggest that you start with book one because it explains a lot more as to what is going on but as that was a good book it will be no hardship. The book might be written with young adults in mind but umm being slightly older than that, I can say it is so well written with plenty of action and a great plot that any age will enjoy it. Each chapter is told by a different character depending on who the chapter affects, I think this works well for the story and keeps it interesting because you also get to hear from the side of the mad scientist. Chase has finally stopped running and is making a new happy life with Bandit and her new family, until what was ment to be a happy time turns into a nightmare. Sully gets a message from his past that puts a strain on his and Sam's relationship, Chase makes a mistake and looks back into her past which causes her past to come find her, in the form of her mother. Gideon rescues a dog that the normal friendly Bandit can't make friends with. One of these things is bad enough but all three problems a raising at the same time, just when the newly formed family needs to be at there strongest is very bad because an enemy is with in them. An enemy they know nothing about. Will the enemy drive a wedge between the family and finally yet what he wants or will the bond they forged in desperate times hold strong. I liked the narrator she has a clear speaking voice that she puts to good use effecting emotion into each of the characters.
Another winner from Jo Ho. I received this book as an ARC for my honest review. This story started out kind of slow at first with not much going on except each person's POV, Sully, Sam, Chase, and, of course, Bandit, talking about their relationships and starting a new life together. However, the story picked up pretty quickly when Sully visits his dead wife's grave and finds it vandalized. From then on the story picks up and the action seems nonstop. In some places the story is semi predictable but reading how Jo Ho puts it into words is satisfying. There is a surprise ending which leaves you wanting to hurry and read the next book in the series to see what Ms Jo Ho has in store and how things pan out. Can't wait.
This was a good follow up to book one, albeit a very slow start. This book may take a while to get going, but when it does there are some incredibly devious tricks used and a lot of very unethical research found. Relationships are pushed to the limit and sanity seriously questioned. Having endured being homeless and on the run from a mad scientist, Chase thought that she could relax with her new family, spending time with her hyper intelligent dog Bandit. Life is never so simple though and things are definitely not what they seem to be. How much baggage is too much? This book may well answer that...
A great sequel that had some very interesting ideas.
A Girl and Her (Very Special) Dog I am required to say I was given a free copy of the book by the author with no expectation on her part of receiving a positive review and no expectation on my part of any additional remuneration. Jo Ho’s novel, Haunted, the second book in the Chase Ryder series, wasn’t just a technically well-written book, it was a very good read. I don’t believe in reviewers giving a detailed synopsis of the book. The job of the reviewer is to simply give an honest review. The last time you heard Chase and Bandit in the same sentence this much, Burt Reynolds was being pursued by Jackie Gleason along the highways and byways of the rural south. I do not like to give spoilers, so in a way, I cannot say all that I would like to about the story Ms. Ho has created, except it is believable. As I said, this book was well-written It was also well-edited and well proofed, something you do not always find with Indie Authors. The story is fast-paced, though it did not need the action to maintain interest in the story. It was not difficult to suspend disbelief to read this story. The dialogue was credible and authentic. It was not stilted and was never forced or simply used as a foil of the plot. The characters were lifelike, many with quirks that increased their believability. They were complex, well rounded, and well thought out. Another thing most Indie Authors (as well as many Best-Selling Authors) cannot do well is write a stand-alone book as part of a series. Again, Ms. Ho has exceeded the norm. There is just enough mention of events from the previous book to fill in the person that did not read Book One or one that read it a while back. Jo Ho has put together a well written and interesting read. This is a story driven by a strong cast of characters, with action and dialogue that pull the story together.

Summary: Chase finally has everything she ever wanted. A safe place to live, a family she loves, and a home. Things are going well until Sully receives a text message from his wife who died months ago. No one believes him because his phone was damaged after he passed out in shock. If that wasn’t bad enough, Sam, Sully’s girlfriend and local sheriff, can’t find anything to back Sully’s statements leaving her to wonder if Sully is ready for a new love. They find a new dog, Pixey, who was abused and for some reason she takes an immediate and horrifying dislike for Bandit. Of course she hides that form everyone except Bandit. Things spiral out of control leaving the reader to wonder what really is going on.
This was a fast paced and riveting story made even better as an audio book with a narrator who brought each character an individual flare. I will be waiting for the next book in the Chase Rider series to be released.
Wanted #1 - This is a verified purchase, after getting the Instafreebie with 15 chapters, this book was purchased. Another well written book by Jo. I was impressed with The Boy Next Door, but this novel is just as great. Wanted has characters that are believable and well developed. The fast-paced plot was well thought out, full of intrigue and the pages just flew by, filled with suspense. My emotions were constantly in motion, varying continuously throughout the story. The reason behind the horror has you feeling for the evil person, but continuously pulling for the good guys. 5*
Haunted #2 - Another good book! A well written, suspenseful novel with a well thought out plot and interesting, believable characters. I read it in one sitting, it was so good. This author never fails to disappoint the reader. 5*
The Boy Next Door - A must read. Beautiful story, sad and uplifting. Well-written, compelling the reader to complete the story in one sitting. I'm so glad I contacted the author to review her novella. I want to read more of her work. 5*
What Doesn't Kill You, Episode #1 - Totally awesome!, and it's just the first episode. It's a cliffhanger but it's written in episodes, which I totally dislike in any book. That pet peeve aside, Ms. Ho has done a jam up job with the start of a new series. This genre is right up my alley and I love everything I've read by this author. The story starts with the introductions of the main characters and touches on their background. I'm sure as the pages grow, the characters will develop more with time and experiences. So far, I like all of them, and I usually don't care for this age group, but I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the story. The last chapter pretty much gave a big hint of the future of these four young women and the roller coaster ride their lives will be now.
I wish I could tell what happened to Christian, but that's a spoiler; I let you enjoy the story with fresh eyes and no heads up. The story line can go anywhere from here and I know the ride will be fast paced and twisted. I thank the author for the clean language; yes, real people do not use vulgar language, whether they're Christians or not. 5 stars even though it's in parts - made for the screen, not to make more profits.
NOV ‘23 - 4 STARS : THE CHASE RYDER 3-BOOK SERIES BY JO HO
WANTED (THE CHASE RYDER SERIES BK 1 - DEBUT BOOK) (‘16) HAUNTED (THE CHASE RYDER SERIES BK 2) (‘17) HUNTED (THE CHASE RYDER SERIES BK 3) (‘19)
DESCRIPTION : What would you do if you found an exceptionally intelligent dog only to discover he had valuable information inside his head that could change mankind forever? The first time I saw him, I had no idea he had recently escaped from a mysterious lab. That he had been created there. I'd been living on the streets which was tough, but preferable to home. Then one day, I stumbled upon this skinny dog being attacked. I saved him, but then he saved me, and I realized that Muttface wasn't a normal dog. He was crazy intelligent. I'm talking Mensa levels. It wasn't only his cleverness that I fell for, however. Bandit happened to be one of the sweetest, most purest souls that ever walked the earth. Who knew a dog could have such a goofy sense of humor? When we sought help from a grieving veterinarian named Sully, his clinic was attacked and destroyed by mercenaries. So now here we are, the three of us. On the run across the country against a powerful enemy. Who are they and what do they want with us?
REVIEW : Book 1 - Debut book by this author in 2016 and first book by this author for me. Not a sci-fI fan but love a “talking” dog. The first 20% already has me in love with some of the characters. Chase is already showing her bad ass side and I’m looking forward to seeing more. Not too sci-fi, I guess the altered, communicating dog covers that. The action kept building and love Chase’s new expanding “family”. Book 2 - Haunted of The Chase Ryder series continued the growth of friendships. I did see troubles brewing on the horizon which started my fears for the future. Lots of action. Book 2 was even better than 2 as I got attached to the characters. Book 3 - Hunted of the Chase Ryder series was just as good as the first two and I loved that the action started right away and carried through. The ending was just perfect.
Hey folks, daddy Steve here. Told you I was behind on reporting on books, right? Well, here's another one for you. This time it's Haunted by author Jo Ho. It's the second book in the Chase Ryder series, of which I reviewed book one not too long ago. That one was titled Wanted.
This very entertaining series is about a super intelligent dog named Bandit. He's super intelligent following some weird, and kinda cruel, experiments made on his brain. He's fine and healthy though. By Supe intelligent I mean a dog that can converse with his humans using an iPad and a stylus kind of super intelligent. Yeah, that kind.
The series has a young adult kind of vibe and has a young teenage girl, Chase, as Bandit's adoptive furmommy. Her presence as heroine of the story leads me to believe this book could appeal to young girls out there, or even simply to young readers period. It's not a love story type book though, lots of action going on.
I listened to that book on Audible, the same as I had listened to the first in the series. They made a switch in narrator between book 1 and 2 but both narrators did a very good job. The book changes point of view every few chapters and each chapter starts by stating whose point of view it is from. If there is just one thing about the narrator of book 2 it's that I find myself paying attention to who the point of view is at the beginning of the chapter because some of her voices do sound a bit alike, men or women, but otherwise her intonations are good and make the story lively.
This is an excellent series and I highly recommend it, for parents and 10-12 year old kids or older. I'm currently listening to the audiobook version of book 3 of the series, titled Hunted. Review coming at some point...
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This was just as good as the first. Hell, I thought we were going to get all supernatural for a minute there and that end though, oh goodness, I can’t wait for the third book.
The cover is so eye-catching that I just want to look at it all day. I know that if I was looking for something to read on a shelf at a store and this caught my eye, I wouldn’t think twice about picking it up.
The pace is steady and flows smoothly to keep the story moving even though there’s 103 chapters, they are short and to the point. The story never stalls and I’m never bored.
The author evokes emotion through her writing so that I felt like I was channeling street wise Chase and I was suspicious of everything she threw at the readers.
I have to say that I am very excited to see where the story goes from here, keep ’em coming.
Now, will the readers get to see Pixie again? What about Chase and Gideon? I do love that this isn’t a romance but I just can’t help but to wonder about them.
Even though the first book was supposed to be a stand alone, I am very happy with the direction the author took it, I can’t wait to see more from her and I am very thankful that she’s allowed me to tag along for the journey.
I really love this series and I'm now on to book 3! If you haven't read the first book, you'll want to get it and read it first. Although, there is just enough recap to keep you from being entirely lost, I would recommend reading them in order. This is a story of a runaway teenage girl (due to an abusive family) who finds and rescues a very special dog that has bad people after him. The adventure continues in this book but has elements of Chase and Sully's past coming back to complicate and confuse their lives, allowing an opportunity for Bandit to be dognapped... I don't want to give anything away so I will keep this review short. Just like the first book it starts off pretty quickly and has a great pace, emotional and adventurous ride that makes it a difficult book to put down.
The narrator did a fantastic job and really was a lot of fun to listen to. I highly recommended this series and I would love to see if made into a tv mini series!
As a parent reviewer I would say it's geared for teens but is clean enough for 4th grade and up but really adults will enjoy it too. There were only a few bad words but no f-bombs, no overly graphic violence and no bedroom scenes.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Do yourself a favor and buy both these books from Jo Ho. Her first book, Wanted, was incredible, and the second in the series, Haunted, is even better! The story continues on the journey of Chase, Sully, and Bandit with some old favorites and new foes. Jo Ho does an amazing job of catapulting the reader into the storyline and creating intense, emotional scenes that have you mesmerized and even crying in parts. Jo Ho writes with passion, intrigue, and such a genuineness that you begin to feel these characters are real and you want to get to know them even better. Chase is a force to be reckoned with and she continues to amaze me with her abilities and street smarts. And, who wouldn’t want a dog like Bandit?! Each character that Jo Ho creates brings a unique perspective and character quality. I love these books.
Please, please write more of this series!! Put these books on your must-read-now list!!
Great sequel to book one Wanted. This book follows on with Chase, Bandit, Sully, zen, and Sam. Finally living in a home as a family with that secure loving feeling that Cahse and Gideon hadn't had growing up. The happiness is so great, then Chase's mom shows up out of the blue causing Chase to focus on her own issues, this happens right after the family all travel back to Sully's home to close out that chapter of his life, which causes him to become focused on his own issues. It seems then things start to go awry, this was something I did not expect to happen, but when it did I couldn't wait to see how it ended. This is another gripping book that I couldn't put down what a great page turner!
I received this book as an arc in exchange for my honest review.
My third read from author Jo Ho, the second in the Chase Ryder series and it will not be my last. Haunted picks up where Wanted (Chase Ryder #1) left off. As long as it had been between book 1 & book 2 a cast of characters would have helped, it took me a little bit to get back to who’s who and the interrelationships. A well-written story from a very good author. No spoilers from me. You need to buy and read the book then leave a review. I discovered Jo Ho when an email from the author encouraged me to read & review The Boy Next Door so I did. Please do the same for an incredible author and an incredible story!
I can't believe it. I found another book that keeps requiring me to read read read. Where we're these books when I was a teenager. Chase series is a teenager/ adult/ family themed storyline that drugs sexual impropriety, unpredictability, and vulgar situational for once us is not the issue. Real world issues apply. This is borderline being wholesome such as a Navy Drew mystery. The aspect with the cloning technology at hand today this series defies the realms of possibilities. In otherwise humdrum poorly overused storyline IT'S DEFINITELY NOT. I'm giving this series. 5. This 5*s
I love Jo Ho and I love this series! I devoured Wanted and felt so happy that a second book was coming. This book did not disappoint. Moving on from the first book, I always worry that it will just repeat what it did in the first book but not Jo! She made this different unique but still with the same style and characters we have come to love. If you haven't read Wanted yet, do it!!! Then get this book and devour it. It's a wonderful series.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review
The story line is about normal people in an extraordinary situation. Running away from inhumane treatment for above normal animals who are just experiments. Heard this one before have you? Not this one. Chase is a runaway who finds a dog and eventually a family who fight along side against scientists and pure evil. Can't wait to see what happens next. It's got a taste of very kind of your favorite characters wrapped up in Chase and her family. Don't pass this series by.
SECOND BOOK AS GOOD AS THE FIRST Ms. Ho's second book of the Chase Ryder series continues the story of Chase, Bandit, & Sully, with a plot that flows in new & unexpected ways. The "villain" is truly creepy, & the plotline is full of twisty turns. Ms. Ho is a master at developing her plot, giving us a little at a time, just enough to keep the story full of suspense & excitement. In the end, it is a darned cool ride, & a book I can highly recommend! Can hardly wait for book 3: HUNTED!!
Wanted the first book in this series had me riveted to the pages and I thought how could the next book possibly top that. Well boy was I wrong. Haunted has just upped the ante. Suspenseful drama, action, mystery, intrigue and heartfelt writing kept me avidly attacking the pages. The bond between the characters has only deepened in this book and as a reader it was very easy to become emotionally entangled in their story. Jo Ho has excelled with this one!!!
Excellent book/series! I told a family member that the best comparison would be to say that the Chase Ryder series reminds me a of a combination of Dean Koontz's "Watchers" & James Patterson's "Maximum Ride" series (both excellent books/series by the way!). That's high praise as I LOVED both of those and was disappointed to be done any time I finished one of those books. I felt the same about each book in the Chase Ryder series. ♥ Well done Jo Ho! I highly recommend this series ♥
Another engaging and fast paced story continuing to bring us more of the lives of Bandit, Chase and Sully. Once again I found myself caring about what happened to them and how things would turn out. I am looking forward to the next book and at the same time I'll be sad to see the story end. I definitely recommend the books in this series, they are excellent!
My review is based on the audiobook. Haunted continues Chase and Bandits journey. It is a thrilling journey that had me captivated from start to stop. I am completely invested in these characters and am on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what happens next. The narrator does a fantastic job bringing the characters and story to life. I can't wait to see where the author takes us next!
The action continues with the family Chase has always imagined - Zeb, Sully, Sam, Gideon and Strange things begin to happen - a homeless dog appears, Sully gets messages from his dead wife and Chase's mom arrives for a visit. What does it all add up to - no good!! This book keeps you guessing from beginning to end.
I liked the book, read the first one and enjoyed the story and became attached to main character. Second book just as enjoyable, so I am thinking of getting the third one. I don't usually like to read a series, but these were good, not a great deep reading novel, just an enjoyable story that keep you turning the page.
A great continuation of the first book. Started a bit slow, but it didn't take long to get into it. Glad I am able to help by reviewing this superb book. Looking forward to many more books by this author.
I was hooked immediately! This one was even better than the first. I love the plot, the characters, and thier growth, and most of all, the little twist and turns. cannot wait for the next book!
**I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
This one starts off kind of slow for me, I felt like much wasn’t going on. But it picks up after one scene and the action is nonstop after that. Another solid read from Jo Ho, and I can’t wait to read what happens next.
I love how we see the story unfolding from the different points of view. I laughed, cried and cheered right along with the characters. Looking forward to the next adventure.
I love this series! Jo Ho does a good job keeping the story going, and fills her books with unexpected plot twists. I read the first book, and wanted to read the second one. It was almost as good as the first one! This book is for kids 10+, and it has mild cussing.
Chase, Bandit, and Sully let their guards down only to be decided yet again. Bandit's life hangs in the balance as another crazed researcher steals him back to end his life.
Sully, Chase, Bandit, and the rest of the family encounter another insane scientist, linked to the billionaire in book one. Sully gets married, again, but he is still being haunted by images of his first wife. Quite a mystery. Maybe next book will have the answers.
