Playing Defense

Rate this book
After a string of bad set-ups and boring dates, Reese Brannon is done with men. She’s focused on her job as a fitness model and blogger. Her life in the city is fun. She’s young. There’s no need to look for a man because she doesn’t want one. Especially when relationships usually end in heartbreak. Jean-Pierre Rochat—known as JP— is done with women. All this Swiss hockey player has ever wanted is to fall in love, but his relationships never end with a happily ever after. Believing he’s always going to be dealt the friend card, JP is over it. If he’s going to be stuck in the friend zone, he’ll keep things casual for his new endgame. But will one hot Dallas summer night change everything for Reese and JP? Because when the two meet again when JP returns for hockey season, Reese finds her attraction to him hasn’t waned since their first meeting. Charming and intelligent, JP is different in all the right ways, but Reese realizes letting him in will make her vulnerable, something that terrifies her. JP never forgot Reese from their initial introduction last winter, and the sparks fly for him even more so the second time. But with Reese, his thoughts are anything but casual . . . Can JP and Reese let their guards down to take a chance on love? Or will this simply be a game of playing defense?

Who could blame hockey player Jean-Pierre Rochat for playing the game of love defensively? He is “that guy,” the one who really wants to settle down and somehow, life and the women he has dated have always dealt him Life’s male version of the “Old Maid” card, the dreaded “Friend” card.

Fitness model, Reese Brannon is done with playing the dating game. Seems like all of the winners have been taken, anyway. Reese and JP have met before, but with hockey season gearing up, JP is back and it looks like something could be brewing between them, but neither has the guts to recognize they have what it takes to move away from buddies to something more. If ever two people fit like a hand and glove, all while denying and avoiding that final commitment, it is these two and there are times when it is painful to watch them stomp on the embers of hot romance barefoot. JP is “that book boyfriend,” the one-in-a-million guy that has it all and only wants to share it with one someone special. Reese is too worried about scaring him away one moment and getting to close the next, total frustration. Will they ever get on the same wavelength and tune in to love, sweet love?

Only Aven Ellis could dream up Oreos as a necessity in a tale of romance! (although making them a staple food of a fitness model was just brutal) Funny, frustrating, warm and simply delightful, PLAYING DEFENSE is one more romantic bliss by a talented author who KNOWS her heroes should always play hockey! I’m still smiling at this one, because Aven Ellis makes all the trials and tribulations of romance fun! (Pass the Oreos, please)

I "scored' an ARC edition from Aven Ellis! Yay me!

*Book provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*

Aven Ellis is back with another hockey romance book featuring the Dallas Demons. We know the two main characters already, because Reese is Holly Johansson’s best friend and JP Rochat is part of the hockey team.

Reese Brannon is a fitness model and blogger. She is done with men! Well, until she meets JP again. JP has just come back from Zurich, ready for the hockey season to start again. JP really wants to fall in love, but he always seems to be the great friend, instead of boyfriend material. I was really able to relate to him, because I’m always “the friend” too. On top of that of course JP is Swiss and has the same way of thinking I have.

No ice in drinks, he obviously loves Aromat, he speaks four languages, he plays the piano and home (Switzerland) is very important to him.

I had some difficulties relating to Reese. The only think we have in common is our love for Oreos. I felt like she overacted a lot and some of her decisions were …

Of course it’s all part of the storyline and that’s good, because it never got boring and was full of exciting moments. Aven Ellis’ style is on point, it’s so down to earth and close to real life. The plot had a beautiful flow and some fabulous scenes. The scenes were a great mixture between dates, best friends talking, family scenes, hockey, parties and more.

I loved catching up with all the familiar characters like Kylie, Kenley, Holly, Matt etc. It was … to see how their lives are now and that they are this … big group of friends. I want to be part of them actually ;).

I already said how much I like JP and it0s just prove that Aven Ellis knows how to create adorable and sexy male characters. He is sensual, sweet, caring and much more. Jean-Pierre is definitely the newest addition to my book boyfriends.

This book is full of little surprises and adventures. Every date is unique and special. JP and Reese have an electric chemistry and you can real feel it through the pages.

Both characters are hesitant when it comes to committing to a relationship and they are kind of standing in their own way. This is material for a conflict, but you need it in the book and it just makes the story complete.

I was in tears at the end and absolutely adored the epilogue. The title of the book is brilliant!

JP - You had me at Oreos

As I read the book there was a scene reasonably early into the book which was the one that made me fall head over heels in love with JP the romantic lead. It wasn't the biggest of romantic gestures, but it was so entirely sweet and perfect for Reese that I couldn't help myself.

For yet again Aven Ellis has written a man who has turned into a delightfully sexy book boyfriend, and its what I love about her books, well that the sense of humour, the romance, the recurring characters in the series, and the way I feel as I read her books!

This may be the 5th book featuring the Dallas Demons ice-hockey team, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Each book contains a fresh romance, but the previous characters are all present, so those following the series can see what happened after each book ends.

I was utterly exhausted reading about Reese, as she is a fitness model and has to repeat various exercises over and over while being photographed, and she has a fabulous blog too. Due to her parents divorce, she is scared to fall in love and leave her heart vulnerable, at least until she connects properly with JP.

JP has been present in a few of the previous Dallas Demons books, and I was starting to wonder if we would ever get a book featuring him, He is Swiss, and besides being a top hockey player, he has so many hidden qualities that I loved discovering all about him.

There is pure chemistry between Reese and JP, and I loved every single second of their story, and of Playing Defense.

Thank you to Aven Ellis for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Reese has had it with men after several bad and boring dates. She's a successful fitness model and her blog is getting amazing views. She doesn't need a man and is certainly not looking for a relationship. If Reese would be completely honest with herself there is one man who has caught her eye a while ago. His name is Jean-Pierre, or JP. He's a famous ice hockey player, working for the Dallas Demons. She can't help checking out his social media sites and her heart skips a beat whenever he likes something on her page. After Reese finishes up on a killing fitness shoot she bumps into him while she's standing in line to order food. Even though Reese claims that she isn't looking for anything serious, how long will she be able to ignore her true feelings?

JP has always been a serious guy. He doesn't do flings and he's certainly not a player. This has placed him in the friend zone several times. JP is gorgeous, comes from Switzerland and cares a lot about the people close to him. He's honest and loves to be active. He's a man I immediately melted for and I was wishing for him to find his happily ever after. Reese is real and I loved that about her. As a model she has to think about her figure, but she also indulges, eating Oreo cookies when she feels like it. When she's with JP, Reese has feelings she never wanted, never needed and never felt before. Every love story has a beginning and I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough to find out if this would be theirs.

Playing Defense is a sweet and fun love story about finding your soulmate. Some days I just need a story that is relaxing and makes me feel good. If I feel this way I know I can't go wrong with one of Aven Ellis's books. I love her sense of humor and she always makes me laugh out loud. Aven Ellis has no trouble at all to make a story come to life. Her main characters are people who are easy to connect with and this makes Playing Defense a wonderful enjoyable read. I am a big fan of the Dallas Demons Hockey series and hope Aven Ellis will write a lot more stories about the great characters in these books.

I loved everything about this book. JP was swoony. Maybe even more swoony than Nate from the same series (which is saying a lot because Nate has been my favorite male lead.) I have a bit of a mermaid complex, and I loved that JP calls Reese his mermaid. It wasn't too over-the-top, insta-love. Be warned: When you sit down with this book, make sure you have oreos on hand...you will develop a craving! I've said it before and I will say it again, I will read ANYTHING Aven writes. Her stories never disappoint.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

They always say when you're not actively searching for love it'll find you every time. Reese was done dating, she was going to focus on her job and blog and spend time with her friends! Most of her friends are married or engaged to hockey stars. She's met JP but she hadn't had a chance to actually talk to him. One chance encounter at a burger joint after a modeling job leads to more than she was looking for and maybe more than she wanted. JP is sweet and smart. He wants more than a hookup, he wants it all and so he's fine with her suggestion that they are just friends.

JP wants to fall in love, he wants a real relationship but all he ever finds are crazies. Women that move too fast and some that think he moves too fast. He happens to be at the same burger joint as Reese and while he thinks they could have more, he's good with just being friends for now.

These two were just effortless, they clicked. Both were a bit gunshy and I'm not saying that it was all roses and puppies but I just loved them together. The way this author writes its just so easy to fall in love with the characters. I feel like I'm in the story! Reese was strong and took care of herself but sometimes it's hard to let others take care of you. JP likes doing things for people so it's hard for him to understand Reese not wanting all the attention or needing him to buy her affection. They learn to love the little things with each other. I seriously can't wait for more of Aven's words. She's awesome. If you read any of her books you'll agree and if you leave a review it'd show you care!

I get really excited when Aven Ellis releases a new hockey romance book! Her stories are very character driven and I always finish each one having learned something new. Usually it's about a new career, product, type of food/drink, or simply a hobby. It's fun discovering something that I want to try or experience.
Playing Defense was all about Reese and JP's story. I just loved these two! Now, I may have mentioned this one or two hundred times before, but I have a soft spot for hockey defensemen. They are my favorite players to root for and I find that they don't always get the respect or credit that they deserve. With that said, JP was an absolute delight. He had all of these talents and seemed so perfect, yet he embraced Reese's quirks. It was nice to see that even though she was a model she loved food and was messy.
Playing Defense was a pleasant read and once again I finished the last sentence with a smile on my face.

God bless, Aven and her ability to write the most dreamy male characters ever. JP was perfect. The Swiss One is one for the record books. I loved Reese's addiction to Oreos and her relatable spirit. I especially loved the interaction this book had with all the characters from the other Dallas Demons books. You really got an update on all your other favorite characters. These books make me want to love hockey.

JP and Reese such a fun couple .

They met a year ago when they were setup with each others friends Matt and Holly who are now a couple. They are not looking for a relationship happy with casual now and see where things go . their banter is awesome but what happens when they start to develop feelings even though they both say they just want casual and no relationship. Can they let the walls down and make this work ?

I loved this couple!

Aven's books are always such a breath of fresh air. Reece and J.P. are no different. I absolutely love how Aven's characters aren't over the top with issues. There's no need in her book world. It's also refreshing that the storyline isn't filled with sex. I can't wait to drop everything for Aven's next book.

Note, I did receive an advanced copy of this book for review purposes.

Playing Defense (Dallas Demons #5) - PG13
Violence: none
Language: fewer than 70
Sex: descriptive kissing, roaming hands, they wake together

JP. Oh, my. I need a lie down. Reece seems a little superficial until you get to know her. Hang in there. Meanwhile, enjoy the heck out of JP.

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews Thank you to Aven for my copy of the book and for letting me organise her blog tour. It is an honour that I can never repay. While this is the 5th book in the series they can all be read as standalones.

I have loved Aven's writing ever since I read Connectivity back in 2013. This was Aven's first book and while a lot has changed since then my love for Aven's writing has not.

This book follows Reese as she falls for hot good boy JP. I loved Reese because she is so real. She has a love of food, especially Oreos, which I totally get. I plan my day around when I can eat next so any character that is a foodie is going to win my heart. I also connected with Reese with her blogging side. I understand the difficulties and the loneliness there is from blogging, which is one of the reasons I love to chat and meet with other bloggers where possible.

JP is sick of being the friend. He's always the you're a great friend and a good guy but he's never the one. His whole life he's just wanted to to fall in love but for him it has never happened.

I swear I say this every time but this was Aven's best book yet. The opening chapter is absolute perfection. I just can't praise it enough. As I read more and more of Aven's books they get funnier and funnier. I honestly cannot wait for what Aven brings us next.

Aven is back with another Dallas Demons hockey romance! In Playing Defense we meet Swiss stud JP and oreo obsessed fitness model Reese! Being that this is another installment in the Demons series, we get to catch up with all of our fave couples which I love!

After an intense fitness shoot Reese is tired and sweaty but dying for a burger and Oreo shake and unexpectedly ends up sharing fries and onion rings with JP...only to start the convo by telling JP she normally bathes before going out! Thankfully that doesn't scare him away and the dates just get better and better!

All of the cute little surprises and fun adventures JP and Reese do for one another is simply adorable, their chemistry is HOT, and the relationship just seems to flow perfectly like they were always meant to be, but they do have to work through their fair share of conflicts and problems. JP is OVER women and relationships. He wants to fall in love, get married, and have kids, but all the women he meets aren't ready for anything serious. Reese doesn't want to open her heart after being hurt, she knows the "love" her parents had wasn't real so she just doesn't want to let anyone close to her. Can Oreos, Turkish coffee, disdain for ice cubes, and fun graphic tees pave the way for these soul mates to realize their love is real?

I received an ARC of Playing Defense from the author. My thoughts and opinions are my own. :)

Mermaids, Oreos, and Oh my....

Aven Ellis has done it again a great balance of humor, romance, and little bit of magic. Yes, magic! Aven has the ability to spin a tale so that everyone in America can relate to the Reese and JP. Not only relate but fall in love with them both.

So I am a little biased when it comes to Swiss hockey players... my Nashville Predators have Roman Josi. (Just Google it, he’s totally worth it) Not only does JP give him a run for his money but he totally one ups him in the best dressed category. Who doesn’t love a man who will call you his mermaid?

Reese is one of my favorite of Aven’s girls. I wondered if it would be hard to relate to a fitness model. The answer is absolutely not. Between the greasy burgers, Oreos, rando quote t-shirts, and mermaid hair I fell in deep girl crush with Reese. I would absolutely read her blog and hope to be friends of Connectivity. JP and Reese make you realize sometimes you have to wait for the right one to come along, and in the meantime maybe you kissed a few frogs. But when they do come along it’s sweet, sexy, and so hilarious.

Thank you Aven for allowing me to have an ARC of this novel. I have reviewed it objectively and of my own free will.

Heartmelting, sexy, funny must read book

It's not a secret I love Aven's books! How rare is it though when you love every single book from an author and have to read them over and over again because they are that incredible because for me it is but I love them all. JP is not your typical hero he is a sweet loving guy that has so many layers you want to turn the pages to find out more about him. We've all hear she saying "Good guys finish last" and JP has lived this. He's terrified to get serious anymore because he's goes all in and it gets his heart broken every time. Of course in walks Reese who doesn't believe in fairy tale love but deep down wants it just like her best friend Holly has found. Reese's life has been filled with messy love which fits her habits so of course she's also terrified when too many messy emotions come barreling in after meeting JP. You can only imagine the hurdles they will go through to try and find their happy ending. If you're looking for the book to read that will make you laugh out loud, make you swoon, and make you believe that a good man should always finish first hit that buy button ladies I promise you won't be disappointed. In fact you'll be wanting another Aven Ellis book immeidately!

I just read "Playing Defense" which is the 5th book in the Dallas Demons series by Aven Ellis. I wasn't paying attention when I selected a book to read on my kindle and so without reading the rest of this series began this book. I'm sure that I missed a few interesting details that overlap between books but this one was written so well that it can be read as a stand-alone book. I gave it an enthusiastic five star rating and look forward to going back to read the rest of the series.

Jean-Pierre Rochat—known as JP, is a hockey player from Switzerland playing in Dallas. He's been friend-zoned one too many times in his quest for finding true love and wants to keep things casual so he doesn't get hurt again.

Reese Brannon is a fitness model and blogger that believes in living life and enjoying things with moderation. She's determined not to fall in love because she's scared to get hurt if it were to fall apart.

The characters are wonderfully crafted so they are realistic, interesting, and relatable because they have flaws and make mistakes. The story flows nicely and has great descriptions so the reader feels like they are there in each scene like a fly on the wall.
I loved this book!

With every book Aven Ellis writes I just become more and more in love with her characters.

JP is just...he's that hot hockey player who every girl falls in love with and can't imagine why some woman hasn't snatched him up for her forever after. All he has wanted what other players have...someone to spend their lives with...and he's given up.

Reese has decided to settle into being a career woman, deciding that the man for her just isn't out there. Relationships only end in heartbreak anyway.

From the moment JP and Reese run into each other, I was cheering for them. Aven weaves a story that makes you believe in the happy ever after…there isn’t any huge insurmountable issues that suddenly get solved. Real characters with some real differences that make the story believable and leave me wanting for more. She’s my go to author, I ALWAYS preorder because I know when I sit down to read her books, I will be taken away from the world’s problems and be transported to a world where all my dreams come true. And…buy a bag or two of Oreos before you start, you will need them to get through this book. I Highly recommend it!

Just when you think you can't love Aven's characters more, JP Rochat shows up and blows them all away. The Swiss hockey player in love with the idea of being in love, he had decided he's tired of trying to have relationships. Fitness model Reese Brannon isn't looking for a relationship, either, but she can't stop her attraction to JP. And when JP breaks out all his sweetness, Reese wonders if she can put her hesitation of having a relationship aside for him.

JP and Reese both have issues to work through, but they're willing to try for each other. The Oreos scene was both sweet and funny, and just a hint of JP was willing to break out for Reese.

This is the fifth book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. Characters from the other books do make an appearance in this one, and it was nice to see them again.

Playing Defense is a sweet book with plenty of humor and love, and very little drama. I can't recommend it enough. If this your first book by Aven Ellis, you're in for a real treat.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Okay, I have to start of this review by saying Aven of course out did herself on this one…& I’m not talking about the whole book (cause she did, she always does!), but one scene in particular. This isn’t a spoiler because every romcom has a first kiss, but this first kiss stands apart from any other than I’ve ever read. IT IS THE BEST FIRST KISS EVER WRITTEN. Honestly, Aven took this one to the a whole other level. JP & Reese are one of my fave couples of Aven’s to date. Reese and I are very similar in the whole giving up on dating (still waiting for my JP over here.), but her outlook on dating is very fresh and real life. I promise you this 5 star read is exactly what you need in your post summer life, pick it up and devour it on a weekend, cause you won’t be able to put it down!

There is honestly nothing I didn't love about this book!! I knew from the last book in the series I wanted JP and Reese to get together. It had the perfect amount of conflict and romance. The attraction jumps off the page from their first meeting in this book. While both have their reasons not to get involved in a relationship, having someone to do something with in town sounds like the perfect solution. But with these two, it doesn't take long before deeper feelings start in. And their first kiss, let me tell you, I would buy the book just for that scene.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. (But also have preordered for release day)

I love this series so much. I get so excited when I hear that their is a new book. I don't even watch hockey or know anything about the sport but the characters in these books make me want to.

This book had great characters with a fun chemistry. Other characters I have come to know and love are also in the book by way of friendly interactions. I love the way Aven Ellis writes her romance scenes. It's just enough without being over the top. It's classy just like her writing.

I absolutely, without a doubt, whole-heartedly suggest this book--and any other book by Aven because I have read them all.

So take a chance and get lost for a bit. It is well worth it.

I'm so glad we finally got to read JP and Reese's story! We've gotten to know them a bit in prior stories in this series and Aven has delivered again. Jean-Pierre is a steadfast partner and looking for the woman he wants to marry. Reese is a beautiful person inside and out, and together they make the perfect match!

Aven is known to write fun, flirty stories with little drama and lots of witty banter. This book holds true to her format and has proven why I like to go back to her books again and again. Thank you for providing a sweet romance that I enjoyed every moment reading. I look forward to what's coming up next from you!

JP and Reese and Oreos 💜

Loved this book could not have asked for a more perfect book to showcase the two characters I was eagerly awaiting for this story since On Thin Ice. Reese is such a complex and loveable character. And JP so happy he finally found his love yay. Loved the oreo references cause what girl doesn't love a good oreo and milk in moderation. Amazing book as you can always expect from Aven Ellis.

Uncaged Review: I started this book and didn’t stop until I was finished. The storyline has some extremely funny lines and I loved the humor between Reece and JP. This book is a part of the Dallas Demons Hockey Series. It can be read and enjoyed as a standalone as I haven’t read the books in order myself. It’s a simple story of girl meets boy still a very emotional and heartwarming read. Highly recommend this book. Reviewed by Jennifer

Another Amazing Story

Aven Ellis does it again in this amazing story. I laughed,my heart broke, and then I felt extreme joy with the characters. The French needs a little work, but it didn't detract from the story. Ms. Ellis's stories make me believe in love again because it has to be out there if someone can write such beautiful stories about it.

I loved it

Great addition to the Dallas Demons Hockey series. JP is a member of the Dallas Demons Hockey team who has had enough of heartbreak. He makes friends with Reese, a fitness model who has enough of heartbreak herself but they decide to be just friends, we all know how well that goes but we like reading about it anyway. I hope there will be more books in the series
