Hey, folks. I'm just a middle-aged American guy, writing fanfics for fun after a long day at the bit mine.

Likes: Heroes who actually go out and solve their problems instead of sitting around whining about them. Especially if they have to use their brains and do some badass level grinding along the way.

Dislikes: Clueless idiot heroes who survive on pure luck and the bad guy's mistakes. Gritty urban fantasy heroines who cause most of their own problems, and then constantly bitch at the male love interest who has to save them. Whiny little beta-boy 'heroes' who let the girls beat them up, and then wonder why the princess doesn't appreciate their awesome sensitive wonderfulness.

This book is on par with the second book, I like how everything is coming together although I do have a few gripes about how the series is progressing.

The first book was suggested to me because it was a fantasy book along the lines of the Gor series, the writing wasn't so elitist feeling(?) John Norman was a doctor and I think he wanted to make sure you knew he was a doctor by using big fancy words that aren't commonly used. This series was a nice fast read where I didn't have to spend any time looking up words and I could just enjoy it. Well as the series goes on sex scenes are all but nonexistent. I'll probably read the next book but it was nice being able to read a chapter about nuclear physics then the next chapter was about Daniel Black getting it on with his girls.

E. William Brown if you're reading this, we don't mind sex, in fact we quite like it...

Good book. Hate the ending

This was another well written book that helped with defining all the characters. I even liked the ending. But at the same time I didn't like the ending. I hate it when an author ends a book where all you want to do is pick up the next book to find out what happens and there is no next book. Now I have to wait and wait for him to finish the next one.

Re-read February 2020. Initial review below

I feel this review will be pretty much the same as each of the first 2 reviews. The author has remained amazingly consistent which is both good and bad. The good is that I know exactly what to expect; the bad being that things I hoped would get better ended up being exactly the same. My gripes with this book are minor but it is the same gripe I had with the last book. I don't think there was enough fun in this book. Daniel keeps talking about how he loves his girls, but he never spends any time with them and when he does they seem to talk about work mostly. In the first book I felt a connection between the characters and Daniel but now I don't feel it.

I think the author continues to do a great job with describing the magic system and integrating magic with an engineers point of view. The only part that is not very plausible is that he is a computer programmer and not an engineer back on earth, but that is being nit-picky. The information he was giving about radiation and nuclear energy was actually for the most part correct (I should know as I spent 6 years in the Navy and spent 4 of those working on a nuclear submarine and the reactor). The alpha, beta, gamma and neutron radiation was correct. I have to wonder if the author has any first hand experience with engineering. ( I also was a pilot so the information he was giving about lift mechanics was also fairly accurate).

Overall this was a good continuation of the series and I am looking forward to the next book.

About as good as book 2. 3.5stars

Extermination is the third novel in the Daniel Black LitRPG series. The novel continues about when the second novel ended. Daniel and his family slowly build and consolidate their place in the defense of Kosalin amids Ragnarok. If you've read the other novels in the series you can expect much of the same only expanded. More allies, some cool new inventions and a few clever plans to defeat the enemy.

In all a pleasant read for fans of the genre.

YAWN - protect the girls, the girls are horny, build the Black Citadel up, increase staff with the right people, fight, 'invent' new magical items like machine guns (but the author doesn't even consider what could happen if one of the guns or flamethrowers got into enemy hands and they copy it with a new power source).

Suddenly the MC knows as much about warfare as an experienced generel. The Dark Elves acts just like humans but with magic and long life (no special traits normally attributed to them like untrustworthyness or evil intentions). It just continues downhill with no end in sight.

The middle-aged, nerdy guy 'fantasy' that just got stale and boring.

The ending - in case something unforseen happens and I continue with the story - Daniel Black aka Gary Stu

While I gave this 4 stars similar to the previous book, I actually enjoyed this one much less. Overall, I think it's still worth 4 stars compared to other books I've only rated with 3, but my personal enjoyment definitely dipped here.

The elements that I don't care much about, 1) the overwhelming detail given to crafting magic items (even when they aren't that relevant), and 2) the harem, ended up occupying significantly more page time than the actual plot this time around. Those elements have always been present, but I was mostly here for the story.

I like some detail to theory crafting magic and spells and such. A good example would be the Divine Dungeon series by Dakota Krout. Unfortunately, I don't give two shits about replicating modern technology in a medieval fantasy land. I don't like the idea of introducing mortars and firearms. Not to mention, I got annoyed with how often Daniel held down the trigger and 'walked' his fire across the enemy. That's something I would picture more with a faster rate of fire, not with a pistol that only fires one round per second. You don't really walk your fire with a normal semi-auto pistol and you can empty a magazine in about 3 seconds.

I kind of lost touch of the idea that the main character was very competent other than in special circumstances. He constantly acted like he was a one man savior squad and had a million things to do all the time, but to me he just seemed like a typical programmer type that had poor time management skills.

The characters really flattened out this book as well. Avilla is the easy example as she basically turned into an Easy Bake oven for the duration of this story.

Overall, not a bad experience, but I think I'm leaving this series here. The author seems to be writing other series now and isn't consistently releasing on this one which is rarely a good sign.

So I'm in love with this series. I love the way that the author goes about mixing and matching two vastly different but similar worlds together. There's a bit of foreshadowing going on, and I think I've figured it out, but with the way things have been going as of late, I could be COMPLETELY wrong. I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series!

Clever, funny, brutal, could not put this book down.

Was sceptical when I first started reading this book, misogyny, sexist, I'm not sure but it works. Can't wait for the next instalment.

I can't wait

A true action hero series, not a blood thirsty hero but a man with brains. I can't wait for book 4 to see what Daniel Black i.e. E. W. Brown comes up with next. Thank you Sir.

Damn it, now I have to wait for the next book. This story is getting pretty damn good. The ending pretty much set up the possiblility of a kind of funny pun. Daniel Black's disease that he caused could be called the 'Black' Plague.

Good reading experience, growing storyline

It was a good reading experience and a well done addition to the storyline and characters. I was left with no firm idea where the story is going which is good. Definitely not predictable with so much going on and so many threads. Looking forward to see how this story goes. Has made me even more looking forward to next book. Waiting is always hardest but since I have read them as they have come out no choice but to read the next one as soon as it comes out. I will be watching for it to immediately buy!!!

Brown Gets Even Better With Black!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FANTASY SERIES!
This is the third Daniel Black book and it is the best so far! I have read all three over a week, but if I was to read them out of order, I would have been totally lost--and this is the best!

The story lines are coming together nicely, but not so well that I have ANY idea where Brown is going in future books. I am frustrated that I can't just jump into the next.

I highly recommend both this book, and the entire series!

Great book

Great mixing of Norse and other mythologies to create a book of adventure and action. This series has captured my interest, cannot wait for the next one.

In book 2 Daniel Black stopped the army Loki sent to exterminate the capital city Kozalin. However, in the hope of making Kozalin less of a target for Loki & co, DB allowed Loki's daughter to complete her mission in Kozalin aimed at opening up the Bifrost Bridge for Loki's use- DB doesn't care if the gods kill each other so long as they stop attempting to exterminate humanity.

In book 3 Gaea has joined Loki and she is actively seeking to exterminate all humanity in favor of her own humanoids (overgrown neanderthals called "andregi"). Gaea has been planning the extermination of humans for centuries by taking the best andregi warriors and putting them in stasis. Gaea can't support the 8 million andregi in stasis so she only takes them out 20,000 at a time. For some unexplained reason Gaea has made Kozalin one of her primary targets so this book is basically about DB fighting off attacks on Kozalin until he can come up with a way to kill all the andregi in stasis. The book ends after DB's mission to accomplish just that. HOWEVER, THE BOOK DOESN'T TELL US WHETHER THE MISSION IS SUCCESSFUL SO ONCE AGAIN THIS AUTHOR HAS WRITTEN A BOOK WITH ZERO RESOLUTION.

Not only does this book fail to resolve its own story line but it ends with yet another quest being given to the MC (to protect Gaea's soon to be born daughter from Gaea). This is on top of pretty much every other mission taken on by the MC, none of which are resolved.

Bottom line: Surely you can find a book more worthy of your time, like one written by an author who understands novels should provide some kind of resolution and not just endlessly add story lines.

Book 1 is mostly about the harem and sex. Predictable but normal harem war story. Book 2 turns the harem into a sci-fi story, building an empire. Book 3 did nothing lol. What was new? What was added to the story? What did we learn and how did the plot move? I just listened to some boring engineer plan magic devices and say no to sex. What the fuck was this?!

Slowing growing bored with this series. While the constant fighting and combat is in tune with the setting of the end of the world, it doesn't leave any time for down time which could be used for more character interactions. I still don't really have a good idea if Daniel and Avilla's relationship has been truely mended after the incident in the 2nd book, and the two barely have any interaction so who really knows.

Also the fact that the MC is super passive with his relationship with his girls is becoming annoying, since it means that we don't really spend that much time with these characters outside fighting or working.

The ending was better than the rest of the book and despite my misgivings I'll strive to finish this series.

The story and characters are so engaging I hardly noticed there's less and less sex

Man I really like this series. There is a great blend of thought and action. adventure and romance.

I liked this book although I think the last 2 books were better. The reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the ending. It ended so abruptly. I felt like the issues weren't even resolved. When writing a story, there are clear segments with a climax and an ending. However, this book felt like there were multiple climaxes and the ending happened without resolution for the issues that the main character was facing throughout the whole book.

Spoiler:
So the issue in this book is that Geia is trying to destroy the city with her army of ape men. The book sets up a climax where the main character go to Geia's world with a radiation weapon to destroy her army. But we end up with nothing like that and an abrupt ending. There was no giant battle or big boss or anything to end it. I was very disappointed.

Another issue I personally have (and others mentioned it too) is that Daniels little harem feels like everyone is taking a free ride from his success and they don't really love him. Elen loves Daniel and I think that works but we never get to explore it like we did when they first met. Cercie is a demon girl that likes to seduce everyone and that is ok too but that means we can't expect her to progrss their relationship. Tina loves everyone now. She used to love daniel before but now that she is part of the coven, she just loves everyone and everything. And Avilla only loves Circie. It just feels off.

Now I think this dynamic works if Daniel is able to explore and spend time with women out side of the coven. But he isn't and it creates limitations to story progress. Just as an example, the nature spirts are always trying to seduce him but he stoically refuses... why? What's the harm? Then the lady from the red conclave also suggests something. He refuses again. Why? I mean these are interesting things to explore but because of the stupid coven, the story is more limited.

The coven is basically a marriage contract where all the members mooch off of Daniel. Daniel basically left the crappy 21st centry marriage system that screwed him over and only benefits the other party at his expense just to enter a new one in his new world that benefits others and limits him. Its very frustrating. When he made the coven he should have allowed himself to spend time with other women outside of it too.

The encounter with Mara kept his relationships interesting though. Because if Daniel just goes out again doing dangerous work just to come home to see Avilla and Cercie loving each other more than him, Tina being ditzy and loving everyone, and Elen reading a book, it would be incredibly boring. The Mara encounter saved the relationship aspect of this book.

Excellent third installment of the series

These books continue to entertain and provide a great escape from everyday life. The books continue to have a nice mix of political/world building and battle. The siege of Kozaline allows Mr. Brown to have fun with the development of weapons for Daniel and bring his technological understanding to a Medievel fantasy world. I did feel that some of the concepts that Daniel uses may have been a little far flung for a middling IT guy but this book is not about science and so I joy enjoyed the creating to move the plot and allow Daniel to become the world ending warmonger that he is.
The development of Elin is exciting to see and I feel that she may have some fun exchanges in the future. It will also be interesting to see how Avilla is able to create a true home now that she is able to be a full fledged Heart Witch. Cerise continues to be a complete Bad ass and with the addition of the Undead Dragon power and abilities and medallions from Daniel, I am beginning to wonder who could challenge her.
The introduction of a new magic race/society was interesting and they may prove to be more exciting than the Dryads. However, with Daniel starting to delegate more-we may see everyone start to play a larger role.
I am excited to see how the series continues as Daniel continues to prepare for Ragnorak and execute plans to protect his Island and community. I can’t wait to get into the next book.

Technically the prose is easy to digest and the story is quite original as far as world building go. I like the fact that the author does not shy away from how sex and mythology is intertwined. Ancient mythology is kinky stuff.

The only real complaint is there is no real tension. The main character kick too much ass. He can't feel pain and short of atomizing his body, he literally can't be killed. Even his subordinates basically win all the battles he haphazardly throws them into. This series is probably the most extreme male fulfillment fantasy I have read. Not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but the characters are OP, which is a suitable term taking into account the references to video games and anime sprinkled throughout.

Not sure how the series will continue. I hope book 4 moves the story along or graduate to a new direction, this is Ragnarok afterall as the books loves to state. It seems book 2 and 3 is almost interchangeable in regards to "building" phase in a typical empire building series. Defend the fortress, fight battles in the city which they win handily, satisfy his harem, add mythological allies...rinse and repeat. Daniel now has to go after Gaia, which should provide opportunities to breath new life into the series if the author wants to.

interesting

Okay, I’m just going to keep this review short. The series is getting better but I don’t understand their relationship. Cerise seems to have any woman she pleases, Daniel I guess has some sort of morals and needs more than just a casual setup besides with Tina but than again he’s practically married to her now and Avilla looks at Daniel more as a biscuit than the chicken that comes with the meal. She’s more interested in her kitten… when they come back from battle or go to battle she frets over cerise more than Daniel instead of equally. Sure, she probable cares about Daniel but now as much. The only true relationship is Elin and Daniel. Elin does get up to things but Daniel is usually there to broker the meeting… she did come close with the elves and their massages though 😏. So I’m not liking the relationship dynamics of this harem to much. I do like Mara though and I hope she joins Daniel sooner rather than later. I have no idea how this is going to be wrapped up in just one more book, but I guess we shall see. I rounded up with this one and gave it 4 stars. To be honest though, there are better women to choose from than what Daniel has in his coven but what can you do? 🤷🏽‍♂️ onward, lads

Really delved into fortress-building like the last but now getting more advanced. Still a ridiculous amount of run-on sentences like the author doesn't know what a comma is. Still fun, what with all the sciency-stuff he does within the magic system and the situations they get themselves in and out of.

Also still a bit misogynistic. There was this one part where they're like "we don't bring women on these missions because the enemy will always think they're in heat and r-- them to death," and the MC is like 'yeah I get it'. A few bits later the same characters say "don't piss off the daughter or she'll r-- you to death," and this time the MC says 'wait but what kind of insanity would drive a woman to act like that?' (that second one was a direct quote.) The author apparently didn't realize how insane he sounded himself with that level of gender bias. Oh and yes the MC is absolutely a hardcore author insert. Pretty sure it's some web dev from Amazon, they always seem to hire jerks for some reason. Puts a damper on things but I try to focus on the story itself instead.

When building a sanctuary, taking a break can be fun

Our Wizard Daniel is still refining his sanctuary when asked by the Gods to help more impacted creatures. Fortunately, our wizard is up to the challenge. But he encountered some problems that will challenge his creativity and determination. Then visiting a good friend in another realm is great way to blow off some steam. This latest volume of Black series is awesome👍. I hope that the author continues with the great work of this series of Daniel Black🙂. Thank you

Great book. Only thing I don't get is that this is a great concept with cool magic and good characters. Why does it seem like every book has to go the harem route now? I get it, sex sells. But in this series I don't think it was necessary at all. I don't even mind graphic sex scenes, but you can barely go a chapter without someone in this book getting fucked. And the flesh shaped horse sized dick in this book just made me roll my eyes.

I like this series

I saw this series recommended on a facebook group and thought to try it out. This was surprisingly interesting . The MC is overpowered but is figuring it out on the fly as he is overrun by goblins, giants and otherworldly species. Plot and world-building could be a little stronger and an editor is needed, but look forward to next book.

How does this book get such a high rating?! It was shallow, sexist, and the MC SERIOUSLY has a complex...EVERY girl wants him? really? REALLY?! Just got tired of the constant worship of man. ugh. I mean, I'm bisexual and find both sexes beautiful. And I have seen some truly beautiful people, but I'm not LUSTING after them, and I don't see that as "the norm" Just cringy

Great fun to read

I enjoyed reading this as much as the first two books. The ferocity that Daniel has to protect his nascent family is a wonder. However this is not a young kids book.
