Taerak's Void (Book One of Fantastica) A new series by multiple award winning author, M. R. Mathias
After finding a strange medallion and some maps with markings that no one in his village can understand, Braxton Bray decides to take it all to the Hall of Scholars in the kingdom's capital. But greed is everywhere. Braxton and a tough young female caravan guard named Nixy are forced to run for their lives, for someone else wants what Braxton found and is willing to go to great lengths to take it from him.
With a hefty, kingdom wide, bounty on their heads, not even the great wizards of the Sorcerious can help them. Left with nothing but each other, Braxton and Nixy have no choice but to get on a ship and go on an adventure that will take them places they would have otherwise never imagined. Elves, dwarves, giant gothicans, and trolls, treacherous forests on distant shores, love, death, terror, and magic all await anyone brave enough to go along.

When the start of a book involves sea creatures, treasure and maps I am all about it. This book told of Braxton's exit from the boring family farm and onward to exciting and dangerous adventures. While gesitant to leave his family he feels compelled to follow the treasure and make his way in an unknown world.
While traveling he makes many friends and enemies and sometimes he can't tell one from the other. The writing is fast paced and full of unusual people. I think this is a great book. The story was exciting and kept me interested and fully entertained.
If you love Lord of the Rings you are going to thoroughly enjoy this adventurous tale. The author has written the ultimate fantasy novel as the main characters Braxton and Nixy encounter elves, trolls, and dwarves on their epic adventure. They are tasked with the unraveling the mystery behind a medallion while making sure it does not get into the wrong hands.
The book will have you staying up late eager to know if they will make it past their challenges or find out what is going on with this odd trinket!
The author does a great job on making you feel like you know and are invested in the characters. There is always something going on and each new character / encounter just has me wondering who will pop up next. So glad this is a series because I seriously did not get enough!
Taerak's Void is the first book in the Fantastica series and does not disappoint! It tells the story of Braxton Bray, a young man ready to begin his journey into the big world on his own adventure. As Braxton prepares for his departure, one last trip to a fishing hole with his best friend alter's his entire destiny when his friend is attacked by a creature from within. Braxton is able to save his friend while also discovering mysterious treasure that leads him on an adventure of a lifetime.
As Braxton sets out with his newfound treasure, he meets a new friend in Nixy, and together they encounter danger and mystery as they experience lands and creatures they once believed to only exist in stories. Braxton is forced to go up against Pharark, an evil villain who will stop at nothing to get what he wants from Braxton's treasure.
The author has done a wonderful job of weaving together a magical mystery through excellent writing and detailed stories that take the reader along for the ride and keeps them wanting more. There are a few times in the middle when it may get a little slow, but it is worth the wait to continue on the adventure. As the book ends, the reader is left excited for more to come in this magnificent series!
Taerak's Void by M.R. Mathias Five stars On a pleasant afternoon, Braxton Bray, the youngest son of a goodly family, has made what he thinks is the biggest decision of his young life. He has decided that it is time for him to strike out on his own, and see where life takes him. He makes his decision known to his best friend, Davvy, first, of course, and they decide to celebrate by whiling the day away fishing. Telling the family can wait just a few hours more. As it happens in the best classic adventures, Fate has other ideas. Braxton and Davvy, as well as a few others find themselves under attack by a horrible lake monster, tentacles flailing wildly.
Separated from his friends during the battle, Braxton finds himself compelled to enter a cavern, where he finds numerous ancient artifacts surrounded by withered skeletons. Coins, amulets, swords and other strange items are gathered quickly before returning to the fray.
So begins the biggest adventure of young Braxton’s life, a headlong rush into wild journeys, interesting encounters and a look at the wider, wilder world beyond his front door. Well written, in a style that will keep the pages turning until the exciting cliff hanger leading into book two…
Wow! There is nothing as wonderful to me as a good fantasy. Taeraks Void delivered more than I expected. The book starts in on the action early with a guy named Braxton fighting a sea creature. In a cave, he finds a map and treasure from an ancient time. The treasure is more than meets the eye and foretells trouble (including a bad guy that is raising things from the dead) that only Braxton can fix. The characters are a wonderful mix of truth and humor. I rolled my eyes a few times, but I think it works for this book. I especially enjoyed the characters of the species of true fantasy (dwarves, elves, and trolls). The author makes the similar, but also makes the characters original to his story. The author does a fantastic job building this world. It wasn't hard to picture the founder's home next to the sea, the elven island, and the forests for the "vermin". He did a wonderful job creating a book that reminded me of a young adult version of Lord of the Rings. It was a lot of fun to read. I look forward to see Braxton put it altogether, fight some more crazy monsters, and stop the destruction of Narvoza.
M. R. Mathias excels in mythology and adventure. Taerak’s Void starts with young Braxton Bray and his best friend Davvy out fishing at a lake. The sudden strike of an octerror on a fishing boat doesn’t give them enough time to react before it has Davvy by the leg and dragging him in also. As Braxton fights the multi-legged lake monster, he is lead to an underwater cavern full of skeletons and treasure.
Braxton was already destined for a journey, but the treasures he obtained that fateful day took him down a path he could never have imagined. Old maps to worlds unknown, a fascinating book of a mysterious language, and unidentified gold coins, as he searches for answers he is confronted with greed and self-preservation.
Braxton finds friends along his exile, even if they fear him at first. The dwarves were afraid he would turn them into crickets, but helped him and Nixy along their way.
SO glad the 2nd book is out already! (as of August 17th!) And if you skipped the author's note..Taerak's Void was written 10 years ago and was forgotten about! All in divine timing. Mathias. :) This is probably more YA, but shout-out to the adults: READ IT!
There's so much fun and adventure in this book and it starts immediately in the first several pages when the "octerror" shows up. Brothers forever! What's discovered during this tangle with the terror leads to an adventure guided by Braxton, which is magic, fantasy, jewels and mysteries. The characters also spoke perfectly for the era, and that, plus other details, makes you really feel like you're there in a totally different world. Prepare for magical creatures, exploration, a little bit of looove and some really cool and interesting characters! All leading up to the journey for Taerak’s Void. I can’t wait to start in on the 2nd book, and with that said, the ending was tied up really nicely.
I am a big fan of fantasy, and after reading this book, of M R Mathias as well. I came to the end way to quickly, and look forward to the next book in the series.
Braxton is a believable hero,, not an orphan, though one of our heroes, Nixy, is, and not a prince, just a young man ready and able to leave home and find his way in the world.
Braxton,s adventure actually begins weeks before he is due to leave home, when he finds an old pack filled with a book, maps and an amulet while saving his best friend from being devoured by a strange creature in their local lake.
His efforts to discover the origin of his finds find him embroiled in a journey with dwarves, elves and wizards where dragons and other mythical creatures make their appearances on a regular basis.
What will Braxton, Nixy and their company have to endure in order to find and destroy the Sapphire of Souls and save the world from darkness?
Taeraks Void is a perfect first book to the fantastical series! I’m thrilled that I already bought the second book and can delve right in and hopefully continue my adventure with Braxton and Nixy in their crazy full of surprises other world! I truly can’t believe this book was forgotten for nearly 2 decades, only to be found and be such a fantastic read! It should be appealing to many different age groups and reading preferences. It has adventure, fighting, love and really anything you could want from a reading adventure all rolled into one divinely written piece of work! I loved the depth M.R. Mathias went into describing the characters and the scenes, he truly brought everything to life and made it wonderfully imaginable! Without further ado I’m excited to delve into the Sapphire of Souls! I’ll be sure to let you know how great it is!
I enjoyed Taerak's Void more than I thought I would. It was an outstanding read on every level. The book has all I wanted in a good sci-fi & fantasy read – filled with action, magic, adventure, mystery, suspense, danger, and wonderful characters that will linger in your memory long after you are done reading the book. The author intelligently took me on an adrenaline-charged adventure of Braxton and Nixy, and how they faced and unravel indescribable evil, death and horror. This book is meant for the BIG SCREEN but Read it. You’ll never read a book in the same way again. I highly recommend this to anyone who is just picking up M. R. Mathias book for the first time. You won't be disappointed. Thumbs up to the author, his writing style is so simple, creative and engaging. I look forward to the next series.
Taerak's Void by M.R. Mathias is an adventure to behold. This novel, grabbed me by the collar and dragged me in deep. Action, danger, risks, and new worlds full of strange mythical characters...are found on the pages. A fantasy that engages a reader's senses and leads them on an epic journey. Taerak's Void is world that opens up to more worlds. I couldn't believe all of the interesting characters and places discovered here. M.R. Mathias writes well. He had me hooked from the beginning. I also enjoyed following the protagonists as their adventure escalated quickly into a high action paced race. A race against the bad guys. Treasure that all want and only Braxton holds it. He won't let it go to the wrong hands. Overall, it was the most fascinating tale I've read. It was way better than Tresure Island.
Braxton and Nixy are on a mission to uncover the meaning of a medallion and maps that nobody can understand. The adventure takes them on a journey through places they must deal with elves, dwarves, trolls, and many other mythical creatures. Bounty hunters are searching for them lending to the mystery of what the medallion and maps really mean. Great story and characters. A good read that keeps you guessing what will happen to them next. Really enjoyed this one.
Can't do it. It might be a good story but it reads like a 10th grade writing assignment before the teacher corrects it. A few examples from the first chapter: ...had gotten bit (bitten?) ...he came up slow (slowly?) this time [I know the "ly" is lost to the ashbins of history but really]... ...neither of them could walk so he drug (dragged?) them
Okay, I'm not the grammar police but when I keep having to stop and gasp it's the end for that book.
The author has created a cast of likeable characters and has set them up nicely for the next stage of this new series. I have already preordered book two and can't wait for it to release.
For a long time I was really into Fantasy novels and loved reading them and then I just lost interest. But reading this book reminded me how much I enjoyed fantasy books! It just felt like a classic series. It has all the makings of a great series - a magical medallion, a young man out for his first adventures, and our fair share of dwarves, elves, dragons and so much more! Braxton has left his home town in search for some answers about some items he found, including mysterious maps and a medallion. He soon learns that he has been chosen by the medallion and there are many that are willing to kill him to get at it. He finds company with Nixy, a bounty hunter, as well as some elves and dwarves, all who have a stake in where the mediallion will lead them. The adventure in the book pulled me along. I wanted to see how Braxton would resolve this whole thing he took on. I like I was reading classic fantasy, at it's best. The world the author created was fully developed, which matters a lot to me for fantasy novels. The characterization was real to me and I could just see the world around Braxton and Nixy. Braxton was my favorite character and the scene in the beginning, when he said goodbye to his family and friends was so touching. I really enjoyed the presence of the dwarves and was so entertained by their antics. I am looking forward to reading more by this author in the next book and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Taerak’s Void is the first fantasy novel from Fantastica series of fantasy books, written by the same author, M. R. Mathias. The first novel revolves around a man named Braxton and his quest of discovering the meaning of a mysterious medallion and a map that he found with it. When I read fantasy novels (which is my favorite genre, by the way), the most important thing and something that I want to find first (it is like a quest for a hidden treasure really) is whether the novel has that particular “something’’ that will be able to keep me reading and “into’’ the novel until the very last page. When I find that a certain fantasy novel has that “something’’ I cannot but to continue reading because I find myself so immersed into the story that time, life, death and other things that happen in real life lose any meaning whatsoever. Taerak’s Void has all that, which is something that gives me a lot of joy. Immediately from the first page, the author wanted to show us that he means “business’’ and that he wanted to write a true fantasy novel, with unique, yet amazing story, including characters, mysterious quests, princesses in distress, skeletons, caves, good defeating evil and everything that we want to see in a great fantasy book. Awesome work!
This is a wonderful adventure. This story reminds me of many of the fantasy books I read growing up. I have enjoyed this immensely, and have shared the link to the book with a few of my family members. 'Taerak's Void' is engaging, fun, and the pace is swift enough to keep the reader interested but not so fast that we get left behind. Any and all unfamiliar aspects of this fantasy realm are explained through the wondering eyes of our protagonist, Braxton Bray. (Which, by the way, is a wonderful name.) I do feel that the final draft could have benefited from closer proofreading. There were quite a few grammatical errors, and while that usually puts me off of a book completely, this story is so good that I just kept reading. However, it does interrupt the flow of the narrative a bit when such errors catch my attention or I have to go back and read something again because it just didn't seem right. This is the only reason I dropped down to a 4 star rating. I am looking forward to the next book in this series with great muchness.
This book is the first one in the Fantastica series by M.R. Mathias. It takes the reader on Braxton Bray’s journey as he works to keep the strange medallion he found safe from those who greedily want it. Bray works with Nixy, his guard, to help keep the medallion out of strange hands and to help figure out what the various symbols on it mean. Braxton and Nixy will meet countless wizards, elves, and dwarves on their journey as they work to protect this medallion. This novel is a phenomenal story in the fantasy genre. It’s full of magic and adventure which makes for an interesting and captivating read. While it is a little long at 521 pages, you’ll fly through the book due to its intriguing story. This novel is definitely ideal for those who enjoy the fantasy and adventure genres to read and is also something to try for those who don’t normally read books in these genres.
Braxton and Nixy are some fearless individuals who set out to figure out what strange medallion and map can lead them to. A great story full of adventure in discovery of finding treasure. The interesting part was learning that they were on their own, due to a bounty out on each of their heads. They managed the best they could, despite having all odds against them. The encounters they had with elves, dwarves, giants, and trolls along their journey seemed beyond imaginable. These two are characters you’d want on your side, judging by how well they worked together and had each other’s back. I enjoyed the adventurous theme throughout the book, as well as visualizing well-written scenes by the author. I look forward to reading the rest of this series to witness even more adventure. I recommend others to consider giving this book a chance, especially if you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings.
The book is very much a classic sort of fantasy mix of all the usual tropes (dark god rising, the chosen one main character must save the world, dragons, trolls, elves, dwarves...), but they are all put together in a way that I would expect in a childrens book with wild abandon and not much finesse. However, based on the content, the book is not meant for younger audiences considering the explicit sex scenes and violence. The good guys flaying a bad guy alive and then killing him makes this a realistic grim-dark fantasy, but not really something I'd expect in a kids book. Quality is too low to be taken seriously, as an adults book, so all in all, I cosider this a disapointment, though it could be enjoyable, if you're not too picky and you just want something short in a fantasy setting.
First book in the Fantastica series. This story has everything you would want in a fantasy novel - dwarfs, elves, dragons, magic, and even young love. The character development and world building are well done. A recommended read.
I always loved Fantasy, and action, which this has both. The characters are great, and I look forward to reading more about them. It is a very smooth read.
It’s a fun, light-hearted sword & sorcery tale. Braxton is a goof, a very lucky goof. He’s a charming character to go on an adventure with. Braxton was never cut out for the boring life on a boring farm. As much as he will miss his best friend Davvy, he sets out on an adventure.
Ladies! These ladies are so silly and almost all of them are romantic interests, even when they have careers of their own (like being guards). Braxton is one of those charming egoists, reminding me a bit of Archer from the animated TV series. The ladies flock to him and I just had to laugh at that even as bemoaned the cliched fantasy females. Eventually, he settles down a bit with Nixy as his main squeeze. She’s got a few skills that don’t apply to the bedroom but we rarely get to see her use those skills.
The big villain, Pharark, comes at Braxton hard, not willing to give up until he gets what he wants. It’s a good thing Braxton has so many loyal companions! Dwarves, elves, and trolls all come into play. Plenty of magical danger and edged weapons! I was never bored with this book because the action kept us moving along at a quick pace.
While the ending solves some things, we still have a bit of a cliff hanger, so I look forward to Book 2 coming to audiobook. 4/5 stars.
The Narration: William L. Hahn had the perfect voice for Braxton. he captured that brave smugness perfectly. Hahn’s voice was a joy to listen to and really took this book to the next level. His female voices were believable and he had distinct voices for all the characters. There were no tech issues with the recording. 5/5 stars.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are 100% my own.
Taerak’s void is a very interesting fantasy book that will have you super hooked, the way it is written and all the events narrated are incredible, you are going to enjoy it a lot and you will want to continue reading the saga.
The book tells the story of a farmer who, tired of the monotony, leaves his home to look for new adventures and if he finds them, in a cave there is a book and a pendant that after taking it to a scholar they manage to understand its meaning and with Time realizes that he is the one chosen to prevent a demon from taking over his kingdom and the entire world. On this path he finds many answers and all these adventures lead him to form an "army" of humans and fantastic beings to achieve his goal and save the world. It is a story full of danger and suspense, it will keep you very connected and wanting to read more.
I highly recommend this book, it is the beginning of what could be an excellent saga full of adventures and a lot of suspense, a very good and well written fantasy story.
Taerak's Void is the first in a four (possibly up to five) book series called Fantastica written by M.R. Mathias. I started out with book 2, Sapphire of Souls, so going back was warmly welcomed. The world in this fantasy series is rich in mythology, characters, and creatures. I am in awe at what elaborate and unique things have come out of the mind of Mathias.
Fans of fantasy and science fiction, dragons and trolls, and everything in between will be captivated by Taerak's Void. This is full of adventure as the reader follows Braxton through the unbelievable things he must experience here. The word I keep coming back to is sweeping. Everything about the plot, setting, and characters is broad yet defined perfectly. All of the information you need to feel fully immersed is given without the bad aftertaste of info-dump. Mathias is a very talented fantasy author and Taerak's Void is just the right set-up for Sapphire of Souls, which is book two.
Taerak’s Void (Fantasia Book 1), by M.R. Mathias, is an intelligent fantasy novel. This book is the story of Braxton who runs away from what he believes is a dull life in search of an adventurous life. On his journey, Braxton makes many friends, among them his new friend, Nixy. The two boys must solve the mystery of the medallion from a treasure and map Braxton found while in a cave at the start of his journey of unknown places. He also found gold coins that he could not identify. The boys found they must also protect them from thieves. Both encounter many mythical places and creatures while on this quest, such as dwarfs, elves, and trolls.
Mathias brilliantly brought the characters and settings in his story to life. His choice of words gave the story a ‘you are there’ believable feeling. The author also slips in humor along with the suspense of the mystery, perfectly. I would highly recommend this story to all readers.
This is a fun adventure story that seems to take place in something like the middle ages. A family's youngest son, Braxton, is without the encumbrance of the family's expectations to take over the family business, and so he takes off on his own to travel and find his destiny. The storyline and plot are rich with imagery and various characters and monsters and beasts, kings and dwarves and elves and sea monsters, not to mention found treasures and old skeletons at the bottom of a lake and the search for the Sapphire of Souls. The writing style is very simplistic and basic, and the book is easy to breeze through despite its length of 522 pages. The characters are very basic and standard as well, similar to characters in most Young Adult novels. Fun read if you're looking for something easy!
Taerak’s Void by M.R. Mathias is an action-adventure novel filled with mythical creatures and a voyage filled with wonders. Braxton Bay has discovered a strange medallion with some maps that no one can depict in his village. He decides to take them to the Hall of Scholars, but greed is everywhere, and someone is willing to go to any lengths to take it from him. Braxton, along with Nixy, flee the kingdom with bounties on their head on a ship to adventures beyond their imaginations and come across magic and terror in solving the mystery. The setting and theme of this story is epic, the voyage filled with adventure is a dream come true for fantasy enthusiasts like me. The storyline is amazing, the characters are well developed, and the climax is surely on the next level. Brilliantly written, I highly recommend it.
Taerak's Void is an exceptional novel that unfortunately features a run-of-the-mill storyline that any fantasy reader has certainly read quite a few times before - dangerous quest, formidable foes, seemingly nobody hero who is miraculously more capable than his experienced foes, and a beautiful woman who is thrust into the mix. Mathias did a superb job telling an interesting story that does manage to keep readers on their toes and engaged despite writing in a genre that has been virtually tapped out of fresh concepts. Hopefully the rest of the series will have something to offer that has never been attempted before that will make Fantastica a world to never forget because Mathias is assuredly on the right path to do so.
