Want a story that’s rooted in a fundamental aspect of being human?

I believe reading dark fiction can be healing. My overriding mission is to connect with you through my art, and I hope to inspire you to do the same. I’m a word architect and driven visionary. I’m obsessed with heavy metal, horror films and technology. And I admire strong people who are not afraid to speak their mind.

I grew up in an Irish Catholic, working class family and was the first to go to college. I didn’t have expensive toys, so I used my own imagination for entertainment. And then I abused alcohol for entertainment. I spent the first thirty years of my life convincing myself I wasn’t an addict and the last ten worrying about all the potential threats the substances hid from me.

Anxiety and depression are always hiding in the corner, waiting to jump me when I start to feel happiness.

I had to break through family programming and accept the role of the black sheep. In my 30s I started writing horror and formed a heavy metal band while my family rolled their eyes, sighed and waited for the “phase” to end.

I spent years paralyzing myself with self-loathing and criticism, keeping my creativity smothered and hidden from the rest of the world. I worked a job I hated because that’s what Irish Catholic fathers do. They don’t express themselves, they pay the damn mortgage. I may have left my guilt and faith behind long ago, but the scars remain.

My creativity is my release, my therapy and my place to work through it all. I haven’t had a drink in a long time, but the anxiety and depression are always lurking. Writing novels and songs keeps it at bay. I scream over anxiety with my microphone and I turn my guitar up loud enough to drown out the whispers of self-doubt.

I hope to leave a legacy of art that will continue to entertain and enrich lives long after I’m gone. I want others to see that you don’t have to conform to the mainstream to be fulfilled.

Don’t be afraid of the dark. Embrace it.

Before I begin talking about how much I love this book, it's worth mentioning that although I won't be spoiling anything from this book, there are certain things that need to be mentioned that came as pretty fun surprises when reading the first two books. If you're reading this and haven't read at least the first book, either read my review there or just better yet just buy it. Long story short, the series has gotten much better as it went along leading to a pretty epic finish.

Before I started this one, I was thinking about what exactly I wanted out of it as a conclusion to the trilogy. I got most of what I wanted, and the specific I'd like to mention is I wanted to see more of the shadowy villains pulling the puppet strings behind the curtain. Our villains are not only bent on the destruction of our hero and all he holds dear, but also fight among themselves like politicians turned up to 11. At times they remind me of my favorite fictional crew of villains, The Forsaken from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. I had my favorites, the ones I was rooting for, the ones I hated, and although there are some we haven't spent much time with, only appearing in this book, they're characters are instantly brought to life and within only a few paragraphs I feel like I know them...Until a few paragraphs later when they're sneaky machinations take over.

With villains this good, it's almost a bit of a bummer when you get back to the protagonists. I mentioned in my other reviews that I haven't found Dax to be the most interesting of protagonists, typically I've enjoyed the characters he meets along the way a little bit more. A favorite of mine was no longer around so I was worried there wouldn't be something on the good guys side to get me excited to return to their chapters...

...Enter The Casket Girls

Not going to say too much about them, but they're awesome and kept me excited to return to the heroes' chapters. Full of all sorts of charisma they're some of the best characters in the series.

There needed to be a proper epic conclusion to the series. The first book gave us a glimpse of the apocalypse. It was a much smaller story, more about family than anything. The second book made the entire world its stage, and now each of our characters were suddenly the most powerful people on the planet. An epic formed from a rather simple horror story. So does it deliver?

Yes. It does.

Things get crazy, you'll love it.

I am so angry!

Most of the book is build up to the final battle. Build up. Build up. Build up. I kept thinking that there must be something seriously epic coming at the end. More Build up. Build up. Waiting. Build up. And then...it happens. The final battle. The scene that I've anxiously devoured three books to get to is finally upon me.

I am angry!

What is this? What happened to the beloved series I was enjoying so immensely? Where were the beta readers on this one? Did the writers run out of doughnuts? Did the muse commit suicide? The worst part is that I know this ending was premeditated! Did I mention the anger?!

I continue to adore the work of these fine men, however, I may never read the last book in a series they've written again. I look forward to reading other reviews of this book now that I've finished it. I still love you guys, but I stomp upon this book and thankfully shove it beneath my bookcase.

Night: Final Awakening. J. Thorn

Book three in this extraordinary series. Dax and the casket girls, Alex, Zoe and Saw will fight the vampires until their last breath. The four vampire masters have formed an alliance to defeat the human population. But, they are all conspiring against each other to gain control. This is a superb read! Full or rather bursting with action, bravery and the courage to survive. A stupendous read!!

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title within the series set box.

The journey to find this Angel continues, with the four masters arriving and calibrating to get the Chosen one.

They are surviving on scavenged food and water. Fuel is that that can be syphoned from abandoned vehicles. It's a weird world!

Book three sees Dax thrown into battle...

I have the omnibus edition so will just say that this is an enjoyable read, though it was an unexpected enemy. Some great supernatural ideas and fast-flowing writing.

Recommended.

first two books were near perfect but this one dropped the ball. the story was paced great. the last 20% of the book killed the momentum. if you enjoy the end of the book being super rushed this may be for you.
