Tar is a new drug on the New York City scene with a problematic side effect. Emilia Augustine created the drug but doesn't know how to go about selling it, she contacts a street wise drug dealer named Spike to do the selling for her. What Emilia doesn't know is how a new drug can effect people, it taps into people's wants and needs, problems arise dealing with greed, lust and addiction. This is the first book in the Tar Collection, each will travel to different parts of the globe, this book highlights Aitutaki in the Cook Islands and Vieques Puerto Rico.
I've been a fan of 'Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase' for a few years and when I heard she'd written a novel, I was intrigued. I don't know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't this. I read the book in one sitting and found myself immersed in the characters as I continued reading. I initially found the tenses and style quite strange with the prose written mainly in past tense (it jumps around in tense when it starts) with the italicised present tense thoughts of the characters woven in. I didn't think it worked for quite a while but was more convinced towards the end. Equally a few typos pull you out of the story, Marjo being referred to as Mario at one point, and two very different story lines, fitting into two different genres, working simultaneously. I wasn't sure how the two were going to collide, but when they finally did, it was clever and I became more invested in the story. I'm excited to read the next book, as I can see this being a series that gets better and better. For a debut novel, with all things considered, this is great and I really enjoyed reading it.
What a quirky, fun little book! I've been listening to Betty's travel podcast for about 15 years now. I loved her book about funny travel stories, but wasn't sure about reading her fiction. Turns out, it is a really cute story and I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series. Basically, Tar is a thick liquid that when drunk makes the drinker smarter- and maybe can cure other "maladies" as well. I love how Betty incorporates her travel destinations into the book and look forward to her next stop in Iceland- also my next stop :)
I have listened to 'Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase' podcast since the first one was put out many years ago. I continue to look forward to the fun, stories and Betty's travel. There is a bit of the travel piece in this story, but only as much as the plot demands. As with several reviews, I had no idea what to expect from Betty's first novel. Boy, what a thrill. Fortunately, as I was traveling at the time, it allowed me to read it faster than usual and thus absorb the plot easier. From the podcast, the plot wouldn't have been something that I would have expected. The two stories interweave well and kept me reading until the surprise turn in the final chapters. I would recommend it for anyone interested in new novelists, interesting stories, and just Betty.
I'm not sure what I expected when I purchased this. I've been a fan of the authors podcast for years so I bought the book as a show of support. What a fun and entertaining romp! I especially appreciated the authors own pictures interspersed throughout. I can't wait for her next book!! Edit Delete
Not at all what I was expecting, other than the the author's familiar travel destinations ;-). It turned out to be an enjoyable, fast-paced little read.. bring on book 2!
