This was a pretty much paint-by-the-numbers plot with an unnecessary cliffhanger-ish ending. It felt like the author just decided to stop writing.

Easy to listen to and exciting to follow the adventure. I am not a fan of the type of ending presented by Mars but "it is what it is". For those who would say that this would/could never happen...years ago I would simply have said "of course not" this is fiction.

Really two different story lines here. Both follow the formula of the day. First is a top FBI agent called from quasi retirement to chase down some stolen radioactive medical waste. That then morphs into a political thriller. While the book is very predictable, Mars does it in such a way as to keep my interest.

The book does end in a cliff hanger which I really hate. It would not have changed his ideas for the second of the series if he had taken this book to its conclusion and then moved along to the next story.

The time frame of the story is only a couple of days so you know it's going to be fast paced. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Luke Stone a semi-former FBI specialist is called in when Jihadists steal nuclear waste from a New York Hospital with the intent of building a dirty bomb on U. S. soil. This is a mad rush against the clock with more twists and turns any roller coaster. But what is the final target and who is funding this attack?

This one of the fastest thrillers I have read in a while and I will be looking at all the others in this exciting series. Yeah! A new author to follow!

This is the second time I write this review.

I received the book for free from Google Books.

This book, a political thriller and its non-stop action reminded me a lot about the TV series '24'. Luke fixes one thing and must rush to another intervention. He too late for some things and he has a credibility problem with those he is trying to keep safe. And yes, his family is kidnapped as leverage.

I know when the book opens and the retirement of the main character (Luke) is interrupted, and book has a (Luke Cage #1) that is a sign that the retirement on hold and not in the cards.

Okay, I liked the book. I liked the characters. It will never be an ' The R Document', but it was entertaining as hell.

White on White!

This novel gets into the story fast and the action is non-stop afterwards. I was floored to see that it was this author's first book since it is a polished work with few typographical errors and it is evident that he wanted to present a novel that was organized and edited. I certainly appreciate an author more when they offer me a novel that is not full of grammatical errors. The story hooked me and I read the book in one sitting. I have a good picture of the main characters since the author took the time to develop their backgrounds, personality,& families but didn't waste time by giving us details on characters who were only on the periphery .I have noticed a trend in some free ebooks where providing unnecessary information is utilized and since it doesn't move the story forwards, it is obviously a space filler. I am not going to give details on the actual events that occur in this novel, as I don't appreciate when a review gives out plot information that ruins any surprises that the author sets out in his novel. I enjoy reading the twists & turns as they occur in the novel without knowing what lies ahead. Suffice to say that is a good political thriller that involves the usual players. The only reason that I haven't given the novel 4 stars is that I don't like cliffhanger endings! Cliffhangers force the reader to purchase the next book in the series if they wish a resolution to the storyline of the first novel. That is unfair. In this case, I believe that the first chapter of the second novel should have been this book's last chapter and I was disappointed to see that the author fell into the 'cliffhanger' trap. I did purchase the second book because I enjoyed the storyline but I feel that this type of cliffhanger was unnecessary since the characters had already created enough interest to warrant purchasing the second book. I almost feel like I'm being blackmailed by authors when they use this technique. Cliffhangers have their place by giving you a peek of what these characters will do in the upcoming novel. But please finish the first novel's storyline in its entirety first leaving the option of whether to purchase the next novel to the reader. Mr. May didn't need to use this type of ending, the strength of his storyline and character development alone, would have piqued most reader's interest about his second novel. Despite the cliffhanger, I enjoyed the novel and would recommend it to a friend.

This is perfect escapism. Believable? No. But it is a fun page turner, an action pulp.

I downloaded this book free on kobo app back in the first lockdown but only now I picked it up.

I tend to download things just because they are free, and it's not usually the best idea, as I end up reading books that don't really speak to me, this was one of those cases.

The beginning felt too rushed, we get into the story without any information or suspense, which I was expecting from the synopsis. There are a lot of characters, which ended up being confusing for like the first half.

I felt I was reading the description of an action movie. This is me problem with books, I lack a lot of imagination so I prefere psychologic thrillers rather than these kind of books. It felt like reading the description of Angel Has Fallen, which I loved, but really, I don't get the same emotion in paper, I just feel bored reading about cars going in crazy speeds or explosions as I can't really picture it in my head.

Very good start for the Luke Stone thrillers.

Excellent page turner, non stop action. Author wrote this book to entertain us, not because he might be conservative or liberal. But this laughable presidential year, it was a good read. You have to buy the next book to find out about the ending, and I already did. Third book in the series will be coming out in June, but if the second book leaves me hanging, I will be upset.

Disappointing ending

Aside from the political conspiracy theories that others have commented on, this story was pretty far fetched and read more like a couple of bad episodes of '24'. And I agree with those who will not buy the next book in a series simply because the author doesn't care enough about his readers to finish his books.

This is a superb action thriller. It is fast paced, taut and edge of the seat type book keeping one on tenterhooks all the time. There are twists and turns every 20 pages or so. It is about a conspiracy to topple the US govt.with a view to wage a war on Iran, a supposedly terrorist state. A fast, light read for military thriller aficionados and conspiracy theorists. The only scene which I couldn't digest was how easy it was for the protagonist to enter White House on a fake identity, just walk in through the door and meet the President and Vice President (just like that ! ). I mean give me a break ! White House is supposed to be the most heavily guarded building on Earth, right ? You can overlook such bloopers if you want the president to be saved, duh !

I put this book down and finally picked it back up a few days ago. It’s a fast action, shoot ‘em up story. The rugged hero, Luke Stone, wins against all odds - and saves the United States in the end. Opps I spoiled It. The writing is crisp and well done. The hero gets in all kinds of predicaments and has to fight his way through. It’s the first book in a series thus all the loose ends don’t get tied up... I guess that’s what book two is for.

All in all this was a fine first novel by the author. Well written and plotted. The only downside is the ending. It wraps up pretty quickly almost like the author was trying to meet a deadline.

Designated Survivor and 24 ...

... all rolled into one. Non-stop political thriller you will have difficulty putting down. Looking forward to getting started on Book #2, Oath of Office, as soon as I tap the "submit" button.

Good story - lots of action..... kinda of a cliffhanger - bought #2 to see what happens! Could've had a better narrator - but K.C. Kelly did an okay job.

I read a few of the 1 star reviews to see why they rated this book so low. And yes, maybe there's a bit of merit there. Or maybe not so much. Maybe it was my mood. Maybe I've read so many sub-par books lately that this was just the thing to hold my attention and help me remember why I love reading so much.

So, I liked this one well enough to recommend it to my husband. There is a bit of language in it that I don't care for, but thankfully the author kept it minimal. I still don't like it and find it jarring when I read it, but it wasn't so overwhelming that I was tempted to discard the book because of that. A situation I have encountered a lot the last few years.

I liked the characters and the plot, the action and especially the chevy suburban toward the end. I want a car like that!

I've requested the second book of the series from the library. It's nice to have a good read to look forward to.

A lot of action designed to keep the reader spell bound. However, the plot obviously comes from a wild imagination. Palace intrigue resulting in the White House being blown up by explosives smuggled in by dissident government agencies and causing the government to be decapitated and the world going into chaos! Radioactive hospital waste killing thousands, etc. Then that whole mess being resolved by two or three mavericks in almost no time at all. Pretty wild.

A lot of action to keep the reader spellbound, but an improbable plot. Radioactive hospital waste killing thousands. The White House being blown up by explosives smuggled in by rogue government agencies. The world on the brink of nuclear war and back in almost no time at all. Come on!

This book started out slowly, and it took me a while to get to know the characters. Once I got into the book, it moved fast. A great thriller. Correlates closely to what is happening in our world today. Scary to think that the USA has the vulnerabilities pointed out in the book. Starting the second book

There was something that was bugging me about the story all the way through...Something almost familiar. Then it hit me...it's basically 24 (the TV series) fan-fic with the characters replaced!
Once I got past that, I found it to be not too bad, just a bit predictable. Not sure if I will go for the next book or not.

This book was a reasonably quick read for me. It kept my interest the whole way through. The characters are interesting. The plot was outrageous, but it was an interesting political thriller. The character development for the first book in a series is well done and it's a well written novel. Bonus - it was a free ebook from Amazon.ca. I will be looking for the next book in the series.

This rating is probably unfairly low. I'm just tired of books that glorify heroes who break all rules, violate civil liberties with wild abandon, and lone wolves who endanger their teams and everyone around them... There's a whole genre of suspense novels that cater to this fantasy. It can be done with balance; here the author uses too heavy a hand.

First, going into this, you have to know the plot is a bit much. I suppose such palace intrigue could happen, even in the United States, but thankfully it's nothing we've really seen before (unless you think the JFK assassination was an inside job... but even that didn't reach the level of things that occur in this book). With that said, the plot moves, the characters are interesting enough for you to feel some connection, and it's a page-turner of a book.

I recently finished two serious non-fiction works, and this book is the type that I think of as "brain candy." It's meant to break up reading that requires thought & focus with something that's just good guy-bad guy entertainment. And that's what this was. If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. I think 3 is a little low. On the other hand, I don't think it rises to the level of other books I've rated as 4-star. But it's a quick read and perfectly good brain candy.
