I thought that going after those who'd destroyed my life would help me move on. At the very least, that it would ease the thirst for vengeance singing in my blood. I was wrong.
With my guns at my side, I continue to search for ways to punish the one man who took everything from me. The man who killed my family. Death is far too good for him.
I want to make him suffer, to take from him everything he loves.
To that end, I need a code breaker, one who deals in magical glyphs. But in the hunt for her, I discover there are far more secrets to my life, and my blood, than I ever could have imagined.
Secrets that are burning their way out of the past and the shadows.
A promise dangled in front of me by the enemy of my enemy is too sweet to ignore. And I will cast all my cards on the table for the one chance that the promise he offers is true.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
Shannon Mayer brings her A-game in BLOOD OF A PHOENIX by spinning an exciting story full of unexpected twists, and dropping enough bread crumbs about this trilogy’s finale to leave readers clamouring for an encore. The only negative thing that I have to say about this installment is that at times it seemed like Phoenix just knew or got a feeling about what she should do in a particular situation, but her intuitiveness was eventually explained, so I can’t even count this as a legitimate critique. This book was glorious!
In this title we revisit her son, Bear’s, death, which was one of the harder pills to swallow in FURY OF A PHOENIX due to the visceral emotions that it evoked in me as a new mom, and I was grateful for the opportunity. Mayer didn’t overdo it where Eleanor, Dinah & Linx were concerned either, and that was another worry of mine that was laid to rest. As a reviewer, I occasionally feel like an author took my opinions to heart, and this is one of those instances. Probably not the case, however I do like seeing improvement in the writing.
Simon & Noah’s motives continue to be murky at best, and I found myself oddly attracted to Killian, the Irish gangster. He’s kind of a male version of the heroine, but with a few obvious differences. I wouldn’t mind it if he and Nix ended up together, although not a lot time has elapsed since her husband’s death in the first novel, so at this point a relationship might be a little bit premature. I’d settle for a quick romp to feed my need for romance, and to provide a brief respite from all the violence and death.
It’s killing me not to be able to say more about Phoenix’s guns, Romano’s deal with the devil, and the revelation about the protagonist’s bloodline, so I’ll finish by talking about how much I love the dog instead. Abe is a big Malinois trained as a farm dog and protector, is one of the finest secondary characters that this series has to offer, and he never even says a word! His body language whenever a command is given speaks volumes, and the way in which he fiercely protects his human tugged at my heartstrings in the best kind of way.
BLOOD OF A PHOENIX hit all the right notes that a sequel should.
Another fantastic story by Mayer. I was hooked from beginning to end. I think this one was even more stuffed with action than the first book, if that is even possible. The addition of Bear's POV added so much to the story, and it kept me biting my nails in the hopes that Nix would be reunited with her son. This was full of violence, betrayal, nail-biting scenes, and to be honest it stressed me out a lot. I cannot wait to see how this is all going to end for Nix her gang who I have fallen in love with. Bring it on!
Amazing follow up to book 1 in the Nix Series, Fury of a Phoenix! It was so hard for me to get thru the first half of Fury because of Nix losing her husband and son but I wanted to see the world burn with her and I am so glad I stuck it out. We pick up where we left off with the cliffhanger from Fury of a Phoenix and OMG, I can't even! The twist and turns and non-stop action, I just love it. I don't want to post any spoilers, so I will just say, this is a MUST READ! You don't want to miss it. I have been reading Shannon's books since the beginning of Rylee Adamson, and have happily followed along on each new journey and Nix is absolutely as amazing as the other series.
4.5 Stars... The Phoenix has risen, and may God help you if you've crossed her... Continuing on her quest for vengeance, Nix discovers who she can trust and who has owned the deepest betrayals... All is not what it seems in the world of abnormals, Nix must discover her true identity and embrace it before she loses everything she holds dear... In an all out action packed adventure, this story keeps readers on the edge of their seat wondering who will survive and who will perish... A twisting, turning storyline that creates an emotional rollercoaster until the very end:)
What a rollercoaster of a book!!! I loved every second of this action packed read. Just like the first instalment, Fury of a Phoenix, this gripped you from the very first word and did not let go until the last. Nix has done a lot of grieving and healing physically but she is not prepared to be hit with the news that her son Bear, is alive, and when she does it takes all her effort not to forget everything and rescue him. There are even bigger matters at stake in this high risk world. However we get a few chapters from Bear's perspective, and he is one tough kid, obviously a boy who takes after his mother. Taking matters into his own hands, he decides not to sit and wait to be rescued. I really enjoyed reading the chapters from his point of view.
Nix meanwhile is making enemies faster than days go by, and it is not always clear who is friend or foe, some more surprising than others. As she races across the country, she starts to learn more about herself, her family and her past. Perhaps my most favourite part of this story is Dinah and Eleanor, Nix's sentient guns. They are strong characters and I absolutely loved getting to know them more this time round and I am hoping that in the final book of the trilogy we will get to know the whole of their back story.
I can't recommend this book enough, it has fast paced action, mystery, unusual world building/creatures and characters that you will take to your heart and not be able to forget easily. All I've done since finishing this book is mull over things in my mind, I can't let go! Can't wait for the next!
Blood of a Phoenix is the follow up to the first book in the Nix Series, Fury of a Phoenix by Shannon Mayer. The book follows the ongoing life of Phoenix (aka Nix) as she seeks to destroy her father whom is responsible for the deaths of her beloved son, Bear, and her husband. The saga picks up where book one left off, and just goes crazy from there.
Action and adventure. Twists and turns. Unexpected plot changes. All of that just doesn't quite tell you what this book is. It's long (hurray!!!) and just when you think you might know where it's going, it goes somewhere else entirely. Questions are answered. More questions arise. The ancillary cast just gets better and more developed. And the dog, Ace. Oh my goodness, the dog! Who knew an animal that doesn't talk could be one of the main characters.
If you have read any of Ms. Mayer's other books, you'll know she's great. She can tell a tale. She can make the storyline feel like a roller coaster. This series, is a totally different feel. It's gritty. And more like riding some crazy river rapids where the bottom drops out and you wonder if the characters will make it though. And it's all around amazing.
I really enjoyed getting to know Nix in FURY OF A PHOENIX and BLOOD OF THE PHOENIX made me like her even more. Another great book by Shannon Mayer.
There was a lot going on in BLOOD OF THE PHOENIX, but there isn't much I can tell you about without giving spoilers away. Nix continues to grow as a character and continues searching for justice. We learn a lot about Romano's deal with the devil and a little bit about how it affects Nix. We get to know Nix's guns Eleanor and Dinah a little better and learn a bit more about their past with her sister. On top of all that an enemy becomes an ally, and an ally turns into an enemy. Nix has been through so much, but it's far from over.
I absolutely heart Killian and am really excited to watch his and Nix's 'relationship' grow. Her husband didn't die that long ago, but I can totally see them together and wouldn't mind it one bit.
Mayer's Nix series is definitely becoming my fave series of hers and I look forward to seeing what happens next for the characters.
* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Book 2 of the Nix series uses multiple points of view. So depending on how you feel on multiple POVs you may love or hate this book...Personally, I didn't mind it this book. Partly told from the father, Lucas, we get a chance to see him in all his evil glory.
Partly told by her son, Bear, this is where I think the author struggled. Bear is a ten year old kid, but the author doesn't change her writing style to fit his age. How often have you heard a kid say things like "...fatigue came over me" or "...i came out of my fitful sleep" 😂
This book has a lot of action that I liked. But the flow and events are off a bit to me. I haven't learned how to block spoilers so I'll just say that there are some choices made by the characters that don't fit. When you change a characters core characteristics it takes some development to make it "real" otherwise it just comes across as random.
Nix faces betrayal and loss once again. In fact, the whole book is about those things. It feels dark like the DC universe (My Deadpool2 reference). I don't care for the fact that Nix has these random fights with abnormals. I understand that she has a Bounty on her head but that isn't in the case in two of the fights. The author puts this unnecessary fight scene in the helicopter ride. WHY? It really made no sense.
Some obvious secrets are revealed about what Nix is and why she is so good at her job. There is no love scene or couple making but I feel the stirring of a love connection.
I also don't like the way Abe is treated by all parties involved. I mean damn give the pup a break. He has been shot, drugged, abandoned, captured, tortured, and experimented on... in the next book he needs a bone and a doggy daycare.
Kristine Hvam is excellent but I still catch myself getting the Jane Yellowrock vibe. It was harder to hear Nix instead of Jane because of all the fighting. She doesn't have the southern accent but it's hard after I just listened to the last JY novel. Next time I'll listen to a few books before getting one with the same narrator. It's not often that I've had the same narrator for two books I've had so closely together.
All I can say is WOW!!!! This is an awesome series. Book 1 was unbelievable and Book 2 was even better. I can't wait to see what Book 3 has in store for us. This book has lots of twists and turns, action and it proves you should never mess with or upset a Mama Bear, err I mean a Mama Phoenix that is. She takes names and kicks butt. It doesn't matter if it's family or not. You mess with her kid and you are going down. Shannon Mayer you sure know how to write a story that will keep a body interested from start to finish and you manage to outdo yourself each and every time. I am a fan for life. Readers you will not be disappointed with Nixs story I promise.

*Thoughts*
“Nothing burns hotter than the Phoenix. She will turn you to ash and dust, minion. Run away while you still can.”
Blood of a Phoenix is the second installment in author Shannon Mayer's Nix series. The story picks up where Fury of a Phoenix cliffhanger ended. Nix has gone to hell and back. Her husband (Justin) and son (Bear) were killed in the accident, that wasn't an accident. She was kept hidden from her own family by Abe ever since she broke away from the assassin business. She found hidden papers in Justin's desk, and needs a code breaker which sends Nix and Simon to Seattle where they can locate a girl name Talia to help them decide her late husband’s papers.
Blood of A Phoenix is the second book in Shannon Mayers Nix Series. This book was action packed from start to finish. I didn't want it to end. Nix is trying to get Bear back from Luca. She gets help along the way but some are traders who need to die. I would recommend for anyone who love a kickass heroine, who isn't afraid to save herself and the ones she loves.
I am a massive fan of both the Rylee and Larkspur series but Wow! Phoenix is one Kick Ass Mumma. I can not praise this book enough, it had me gripped from beginning to end and was gutted when it finished. I am just praying that this goes on for more than 3 books. You have outdid yourself this time Ms Mayer. You should be really proud of yourself as this was absolutely first class!
I was transported into the story from the beginning. I was unable to stop reading till the last page and still wanted more to read as it was so good. Full of action and intrigue. Love Nix and Bear so much and can not wait for the final book in this trilogy to find out how it ends.
This book goes further into the life of Nix, revealing secrets and awakening something deep inside her. Such a lot happens in this book. Looking forward to next book, as Nix embraces her new found knowledge and power.
Holy ever loving cliff hangers! This book is phenomenal and I would recommend it to all paranormal lovers. I need the next book and this one just released lol.
Such a good book! I love Phoenix! This is an incredible series. This book was such a page turner and I love how Shannon keeps you guessing as to where the story is going. I was definitely on the edge of my seat reading this.
It is more than name, but rather a destiny. She is badass and people keep messing with the ones she loves to their own detriment. You want Romano dead and keep reading with hopes of getting that. Love Nix and the story is phenomenal, but man she deserves a break!
What a great follow up to Fury of a Phoenix. In the first book we saw Nix lose her husband and son. In this book we find that Bear is still alive and in the hands of her father. What lengths will she go to in order to recover her son? Now Nix is on a quest to take everything from her father and bring him down, if only it were that easy, right? This book is a wild ride full of lots of action and mayhem and it leaves you wanting more (when is that 3rd book coming?). I love that we get to see part of the story from Bear's POV, it really brings a new level to this story and I can't wait for the next book.
I was affeaid that after the first book (that I loved) the second one won't be as good, but color me surprised it's better! I love how real the sentiments apear to be on Phoenix, they sure sound the way we think we would do as moms in case our kids will ever be in danger, nothing can stop us!
I don't even know how to begin. I feel sort of like I am cheating on Rylee and Lark by loving Nix as much as I do. I love that she is not a needy "poor me" type of heroine and kicks butt with out remorse to save her son. Shannon Mayer has done a fantastic job with this new series and I am certainly looking forward to book 3.
(4.5 Stars) “Blood of the Phoenix” is one wild emotional thrill ride. Nix and Simon are headed to Seattle where they can locate a girl name Talia to help them decide her late husband’s papers.
As they travel from place to place, Simon does the unthinkable and sells her out to Mancini. She is planning the worse possible death for him when Mancini informs her that her son Bear is still alive. Nix is shocked but wants prod of his claims before she will believe him. So, she takes her dog, Abe to Bear’s school where his identity is confirmed. This tidbit changes the game and now the Phoenix is set to work with Mancini to put an end to Genzo and the production of a substance that can distort abnormal into monsters.
All is definitely not what it seems and what we do k ow is that Little Bear is growing up quickly. I guess you have to when your grandfather is a psychotic bastard. I don’t want to give the plot away but I will tell you that there are plots and subplots galore in this read.
In all honesty, the reason I gave this book 4.5 stars rather than a perfect 6 is because the material in this book is so dark that it weighs a reader down; however, Ms. Mayer does something really smart. She tells the story from the point of view of. Not only Phoenix but from Bear’s perspective as well. Reading Bear’s point of view is lighter and took some of the darkness away.
All in all, this story and this series is incredible. There’s so much action, deception and mayhem at every turn that you almost need a scorecard to keep everything straight. I am really excited about going in to the next book!
I tried to get past the fact that she drank a cup of coffee she didn’t see prepared, from someone she actively and explicitly did not trust, especially when that violates lesson 1 of women’s safety 101.
I tried to get past her continuously making stupid decisions that no logical person, and most definitely no super trained assassin, would make. Examples: the coffee thing, letting her attack dog go to see a certain character, keeping a phone her enemy gave her that is probably being used to track her, taking the magic IDs and not asking how they came to be, still traveling with the guy she doesn’t trust and letting him help her when she’s vulnerable in multiple ways.
But my breaking point, that same character shows up with coffee again and she drinks it AGAIN! She doesn’t even think twice about it, doesn’t smell it, nothing. All while he tells her the very thing I mentioned above about the phone and gives her a new one.
I mean does she not have the ability to say the word no? Does she not have the ability to make her own deductions, buy her own coffee and phone, or does it always need to come from a man? How many times will she be saved by someone else when she’s supposed to be this badass?
Listen, I have no problems with the damsel in distress, or the out of touch and out of shape former super assassin protagonist being pulled back in the game they don’t know anymore. But that isn’t what this story was sold as, and when you write characters in this way, selling them as badass but giving us someone sloppy, they come off as incompetent and almost impossible to relate to.
Shannon does it again... Blood of the Phoenix is book 2 of the Nix series... after the small battle Nix goes through in book one and getting the revenge needed and hunting down those who took her family from her.. Nix is still not done... one of the people told Nix to go get her boy.. Confused in what she was told Nix still continued to destroy her fathers facility and taking what he love the most.. His Money. Book 2 picks up where the first one left of.. Nix has gained a few new side kicks to help her destroy her fathers drug empire... and in the process she gets some exciting new from home.. a package arrives and Nix is told that there is a picture of a boy that resembles her Bear. Could it be possible.. Could Bear be alive? While Nix is leaving New York to head to Seattle to find an abnormal decoder for the Coded papers that she has she has had since book 1... a whole new storm of disasters comes her way. I loved reading this book... it holds you on the edge of your seat as to everything that Nix experiences... her sadness, and happiness and along with her battles and discoveries and how she handles the news of many secrets. if you are curious and want to know too... you must read this book.. I did and simply loved it... and I guarantee that you will love reading book 2 Blood of a Phoenix
Good Lord! I thought the first book was awesome and non-stop excitement from the moment I picked it up but this one was even better!!
Nix makes her way to destroy the man responsible for the death of her family and discovers her son is still alive! She makes a few frenemies along the way and we are introduced to one of the four mobsters who may not be all that bad. I have to say I kinda like the Irish man. Hope he doesn't end up turning on her! She needs a good strong man by her side to help her raise Bear after all the dust settles. And regardless of all the obstacles that stand on her way, I have every confidence that she will get her boy back.
In this book, Nix also learns more about her namesake and gains a few weapons that will be needed to defeat her father and his demon. I don't want to spoil this for any potential readers, but I will say that this has to be my favorite Shannon Meyer book to date. She just keeps writing better and better material and I have yet to read a book of hers that is not a best seller masterpiece!
Thank you Shannon for gifting us with your amazing literary abilities! We are blessed to have you!!
Love the overall story, writing style and the characters, so good!! BUT (spoilers follow), such major plot inconsistencies!
1. Nix said specifically in Book 1 her father made a deal for someone else's soul, but then says the opposite in this one and acts surprised to learn he bartered for someone else's soul. 2. The guns say they can't pull the trigger in Book 1, but Dinah does in this one without an evolution of powers explanation...it was stated like it was always possible 3. TOMMY...man, thats a HUGE hole to fall into. She literally almost killed him at the restaurant in Book 1 and he was definitely a Romano fanatic, but now he's been missing for years and working against Luca?
I do realize I'm binging so these so it stood out more strongly than they might when reading at the time of the release, but these aren't small plot points! Irritating, but I'm donning rose colored glasses and continuing because the books really are good if you ignore these types of items.
WOW just WOW and still that doesn't seem enough, I mean seriously Shannon Mayer is a word wizard extraordinaire, I just can't stop gushing over how much I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book.
The storyline was magnificent, the plot beyond thrilling, the characters both good and bad were freaking fantastic I just loved every word, every page, every chapter and I NEED more.
Bear what a cutie I just seriously want to hug this kid he is truly his mother's son and a true hero.
Phoenix a new book heroine with a twist she is beyond badass seriously, oh and in team with Dinah and Eleanor omg they just rock those talking guns are a phoenix's best accessory...lol
Simon, Simon, Simon well he lived up to expectation....... Noah again should have known better Killian hmmmmmm a gorgeous man with an irish accent it doesn't get dreamier I'm holding out hope he is on Phoenix's side otherwise things won't end well for him lol
The moral to the story, 'Don't EVER betray Phoenix'
