Just Okay
Despite the fact that the main characters were endearing, sweet and well written, the book was just “bland,” it lacked some fundamental elements and I’m annoyed that I purchased it at the price I did because it wasn’t worth it.
**SPOILERS**
Zadie is a 25 year old wolf shifter who despite being “loved” by her family and pack, is subjected to hateful words every day, and loneliness. You see, Zadie is considered fat for a wolf, fat even in human standards. She pretends not to be affected by the shaming, but she is hurt, she just hides it well. Every full moon there is a “mate run,” where unmated wolves run and the male unmated wolves chase the wolf they desire. Zadie has attended multiple ones since she was eligible at the age of 18, but no one ever chased her…she was considered undesirable and given the nickname of “fat mate.
Alpha Dante has been invited to Zadie’s pack by Zadie’s alpha, Sloane. Dante knows that Sloane wants an alliance between their two packs cemented by Dante marking and mating Sloane’s daughter, Bianca. But Dante hates pack politics, and really hates the idea of mating Bianca, who has a reputation of being mean, shrewish and a, pardon me saying it, a slut. Dante however respects Sloane and accepts his invitation, he’s accompanied by his sister Bethany and some of his pack.
When Dante arrives and is greeted by Alpha Sloane, a remarkable thing happens…he smells the delicious scent of lemons, a hint of vanilla, and sees that the scent belong to a beautiful curvaceous, young woman, that woman is Zadie. He becomes instantly fixated on her, knowing she’s his mate and wanting her desperately. For Zadie’s part she thinks the visiting Alpha is attractive, but doesn’t even think she’d be attractive to someone like Dante, someone wealthy, well off, and an Alpha to boot.
Dante begins to slowly woo Zadie. At first she’s not aware of what he’s doing, but it soon becomes clear that Dante is, in a way courting her with the intention of mating. Dante is furious when he learns that the Pack has made Zadie feel undesirable, and only useful at basically running the nursery, cooking, and taking care of people when no one takes care of her. Dante is determined, now more than ever to mark and mate Zadie, and bring her home with him to his Pack who would adore and appreciate all of her, and everything she does.
Zadie slowly falls for Dante, and although is takes awhile for her to really accept that Dante wants her, finds her attractive and wants to mate with her, she eventually does. Dante chases her (one thing she’s always wanted but never thought she would have) catches her and then have sex, where he proceeds to bite her marking her as an Alpha’s mate.
The epilogue fast forwards 10 years. Zadie and Dante have 5 kids and she’s expecting twins in 3 months. Her life has been wonderful with Dante, her new pack and then her children. She’s happy, loved, content and has all she ever dreamed of.
**THOUGHTS**
This book was only given 2 stars by me because is was just so…well “bland,” and cliched. I liked the characters but there wasn’t any true development to them, and the plot, though sweet, was just so so. It read like a textbook shifter romance. There were no twists, almost no drama at all, nothing remarkable happens and it all is tied up neatly with a boring HEA. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE HEA’s, but I like when they’re delivered after a satisfying surprising and exciting book. I love HEA’s when everyone the FMC and MMC (or main male characters) go through something, anything, deal with issues or problems, solve things and grow in the process. An HEA after a bland almost boring story truly doesn’t make me feel anything…well it annoys me, especially if I’ve paid for the book at a price I don’t believe it deserves. “Fat Mate” wasn’t poorly written but it was boring, bland, cliched, and extremely predictable to the point of being ridiculous.
I honestly wouldn’t waste my money on this book. If it’s offered through kindle free, then yes, sure read it…it’s an easy, quick, stupidly predictable novel…but if you have to pay, truly don’t waste your time or money. It really not worth it.
