Short but powerful introduction into the life and political ideas of Joseph Chamberlain, one of the England’s most engaging statesmen of high empire. Choosing to focus on Chamberlain’s 1886 Split with the Liberals over Home Rule for Ireland as the ideological core of Chamberlains motives, it lays out concisely and clearly his hurricane of a career with gusto.

It is clear that Powell would have seen parts of Chamberlain’s career in his own, and would have found inspiration in Joseph’s imperial character, and solace in his political tragedy.

Very nice introduction to Mr Chamberlain - certainly sympathetic to him. It lacks in exploring the personal life of Joseph Chamberlain in particular, but Powell's writing is eloquent, cogent and fluent as always. Good read.
