I know some friends that like this book, but I was turned off by several things in it. Call me a prude, that's fine. I didn't like the hero at all--to me he came off as a user of women (even if they are consensual I don't like when the hero doesn't respect women and uses them for sex with no tender regard for them). For those who are squeamish about erotica, you might want to avoid this book. I bought it for the secret baby plotline (which is less common in IR) and it turned out to be very in your face sexually with some objectionable language and discussions (to me). I guess my naivete was the factor, but I had a bad taste in my mouth and feel like I bought the kind of book that I don't care for and wasn't clearly warned for what kind of book it was. I think Ms. Vaughn is a very good writer. This one is just not my cup of tea. I really wish I had bought a paper copy so I could trade it. Since I bought an ebook, I will just have to delete it. :(
Charli Brown host her husband Paul on her first wedding anniversary.Paul was a firefighter and died as a hero.Charli was a heart broken widow who lost love of her life.
Jack Fox was a successful CEO of a software company and was all love them and leave them type until..............................
Charli sat in a bar drinking and trying to drown her sorrow of her 2nd anniversary and loss of her husband 1 year ago.Trying to stop the pain of loosing her husband by drinking.
Jack was stuck by a beautiful women sitting in a bar alone drinking and clearly trying to get away from her pain. But out of every thing he could only think of one more thing was that how beautiful the women was.
This is avery different story with lots of funny and sad moments and a very different type of heroine .Jack wanted to talk to the women of his dream so he paid for the drinks charli had but charli did not even bother to say thank and just said i did not ask him to pay.
Jack was left a little sad by the fact he would never see her again, but destiny bought them back together because charli was to drunk she could not drive so she when to hotel for a room but the hotels were full and there comes jake the superaman at the rescue .
Jake wish came true ,the she was standing in front of him .All the rooms were booked so jake offered charli to stay in his room as it had two beds but the that led them to one heat streaming one night passion. Charli disappeared before jake could say anything leaving jake heart broken but destiny had other plans for them there one night passion left them with a string that would bring them back toghter.
I like the theme of a "secret baby" and this one was after a one night stand. It is a usually a hit with me and I have to say even though this one had its eye roll moments with lots of holes, cheesy dialog, porno sex scenes, and cliche situations I actually liked it and read it in one sitting. The cover was creepy though!
As a lover of awesome Interracial/Multicultural Romance fiction, I am seriously picky about the books that I read. For over 1 year, I’d been tempted to read this book, but for some reason or another, something held me back from buying it. Fortunately, one of my fellow friends on GR was kind enough to loan this book to me.
For that act of generosity, I am most grateful, because after reading this book, I can definitely say that I would have had a problem with paying $4.99 + tax for it. Although Eve Vaughn is an established Interracial/Multicultural Romance writer, this was not one of her best works of IRR fiction. Not to say that it was horrible, but it just wasn't a perfect read.
Being the persnickety reader that I am, I have a serious problem when I have to endure unrealistic scenarios, stilted dialogue, overcooked porno-style erotica, and not to mention, stupid/stubbornly ignorant heroines/heroes.
In this story, our heroine, “Charlie,” is mourning the loss of her late husband, who died in an accident about 1 year ago. “Charlie” hooks up with “Jake” at hotel in a city away from home, and both characters have mad crazy sex after only knowing each other for a day. The morning after, “Jake” is in love/lust with “Charlie,” but she regrets their tryst, thereby making haste to get away from “Jake,” before he becomes too attached. Unfortunately for “Charlie,” “Jake” has left her with a little reminder of their tryst, thereby inspiring “Charlie” to evade “Jake’s” advances when they meet again almost 3 years to the date of their 1 night stand.
All in all, I thought that this book was ok, but in my opinion it wasn’t spectacular. That’s not to say that there weren’t moments of sheer brilliance in the book, because there were, but the moments of annoying porn-style dialogue/sex, and not to mention the ill-placed paranormal element, threw the story out of balance for me. To be fair, this book kept me engaged for about 2 ½ hours, so therefore it was somewhat captivating, but at the same time, it was annoying as well. If Ms. Vaughn had kept up the pace throughout the book by inserting more delicious drama and better choreographed sex scenes, this book would have garnered a 5 star rating across the board.
The heroine and her parents were TOO MUCH! The heroine was so contrary that I kept wanting the hero to wake up and cut his losses. The heroine's parents DEMANDED to know the name of the father of her baby despite the heroine being a 33-year woman living on her own and taking care of her child. She breaks down and tells them, they don't like her TONE so they cut their vacation short and leave in a huff.
The hero kept putting himself out there and his feelings on the line to no avail. The heroine had no problem dropping her knickers at a simple touch. She wanted the sex, she just didn't want him because she was afraid of loving and losing him. Her argument and justification to herself got old really quickly.
This book is a reissue and was originally published in 2006. This is one of the nicest Eve Vaughn heroes you'll ever read from her. Trust me.
"A Night to Remember", is not exactly what I would have selected for myself. This book was a gift from a friend and it's not what I usually read. She calls herself trying to broaden my horizons...lol. This is the first novel I've read by Ms. Eve Vaughn, and I thought she did an amazing job with the character development, I found them to be quite memorable. I thoroughly enjoyed the lead characters Charlie and Jake the attraction and desire between them was very intense. The secondary characters were also unforgettable and added extra spice to this tale. The storyline was well thought out and had an enjoyable flow.~~~~~~~The only thing I didn't like about this story was the explicit sex and the graphic language. It was TOO MUCH! I thought it took away from what could have been a very sweet, romantic and captivating tale. The love scenes came across as extremely pornographic, instead of heated and sensual. And the language was just "over-the-top", I mean dirty talk can be sexy at times, but this was just way too vulgar for me and it took some the enjoyment out of the story.~~~~~~~Having said all that, I still believe Ms. Vaughn to be a talented author, and very capable of writing a intensely, passionate tale. And despite what I felt were flaws, that being the explicit sex and graphic language, this novel was still a page-turner and at times moved me to tears.
Okay I just finished this one. I was really surprised! It's like it turned into a completely different story during the 2nd half of this book and I was actually tearing up a few times. The HEA was awesome! Charlie got on my nerves alot, but I understood her motivation behind certain choices/mistakes that she made. Jake too. Their redeeming qualities was the simple fact that they loved each other and at the end of the day they chose to submit, commit, & love one another.
Now the first half of this book... It started off okay when it was speaking of Charlie and her husband Paul. But then immediately after she meets Jake and it goes into how quickly they hook up, it got kinda Bleh.. Just because I felt like the physical scenes with them were trying to come off as erotic but they were just smutty, and luke warm with feeling. So I had a hard time reading that.. I did not believe that Charlie and Jake had a chemistry until going into the 2nd half of the book up to the end. So if the story itself, the dialog and the chemistry had not improved I would have given this one 1 or maybe 2**
I have had this book for ages and have only now gotten around to reading it. Boy I felt for Jake he was practically begging Charlie to let him love her and she was hard on him every step of the way. It was torture reading how much this man loved this woman and she was just totally incapable of showing that she loved to him back. A great read.
Charlie Brown – Determine, gutsy, and getting to know the up’s and down’ of life. She is also caught in the middle of family and friends issues – toss a man into the mix and it is shear hell.
Jake – Stubborn, knows what he wants and not afraid to go after to it. A good friend to have at your side, but one who can also be the one to toss the first punch if it’s deserved.
The Plot
One night is all it take, when two people’s defences are down and they reach for each other to provide the comfort they so desperately miss and need at that particular moment.
Three years later and Charlie is in a new town starting a new job and trying to find some middle ground with her home life.
Jake on the other hand has never forgotten the woman who has turn his life upside down three earlier and has buried himself in his job and his company has it has taken off big time. He is now hiring just to keep on top of the game.
When the newest employee meets her new boss, not only does the sparks fly – but secrets are about to come out into the open that will certainly cause Jake and Charlie to rethink alot of what is important to them.
Smut/Ick Factor
Hands down some smokingly hot smut. Not only was this guy equipped but he knows how to work his magic. Charlie was no slouch either and she gave as good as she got.
I love the fact that she was such a take charge sort of person in the bedroom and Jake was only too ready to give it up.
Nice..
Positive
I haven’t read a book in a while that covers a good portion of time – a couple years and i was easily caught up. The author uses the time to give background and develop the characters and really carve out the story.
The character were easy to like and there were some pretty decent support cast that made the story all that more endearing.
The pace of the book was not hurryingly quick, but it didn’t drag either – it was an even paced book, that i really enjoyed.
The plot was not only woven around the main protags past, but also family and friends that made the book a full bodied read – where you wanted to see sneak peeks at what the others were getting up to.
Issue aplenty were in this book. From the office to the bedroom – a little of everything was there and this push this book along nicely.
When i read an interracial book, i am always looking at how much importance the author place on the families and the dynamics of what to come. This was nipped right in the bud and a few bubbles were burst along the way.
In this book – the females are strong, they are opinionated and they pack a punch. I really like a book that shows women taking charge and making an impact.
The family and friend interaction lends a reality to this book, it could really have been me going through some of these issues.
Bottom Line - This is a story, if you haven’t read a honest to goodness story in a while – this is one. It had more than enough smut, but it also had a base line culminating in me going through a whole lot of emotional highs and low and genuinely wishing for HEA because right up to the end, i was not sure.
Negative
I hate bitchy men and if there is one thing i can’t stand is a man who intentionally hurt people because he is beaten at his own game, just mean.
Other than the fact that i wanted to strangle the son of a bitch, this was really a book that i will be re-reading very soon…
Cover.
Yes i like – Strong sexy man with not seen woman – ohhhh my. Very nice
Annoying heroine, Likeable hero. That was probably one of the nicest hero I've ever read. Even though it ends with HEA, I'm not really happy with how it's going. The push and pull relationship is so frustrating. I think I like her romance thriller better. Perfect is my favorite from her. That book seriously a guilty pleasure for me. Yum-yum.
The main reason that I got interested on this book is because of the secret baby plot. I was really hoping it will be good.
I was really disappointed when I finished reading this. It could have been good but it fell flat.😿
My main issue is Charlie, our heroine. I was really irritated on her. She was so indecisive, selfish, spoiled and whiny. It was really an effort to finish this book. I almost dnf this book. But I just recently added 2 books on my "skipped to the end" shelf so I wanted to break my not finishing books streak.
I also disliked Helen, our hero's meddling sister. I hate her more than I hate Charlie which is saying something.
Jake is a fine hero, a bit intense but he grew on me, honestly, he does not deserve someone as selfish as Charlie.
After all my patience in trying to finish this book, at the latter part of the book, almost at the end, finally Charlie did the right thing.😑
I don't know why, but I didn't even appreciate the sex for this after the first time. They did it so often and they fell in love solely because of it. So yeah, I didn't like the insta-love, even though Jake kept on claiming he loved her more than just for the sex. Their daughter was cute, but I've read secret baby books with way cuter children.
It was just a meh read. I wish I had spent my time reading something better, to be honest. I guess the one redeeming quality is that one point made me cry.
I wish I could give books ½ star ratings. This book could have been a 5 for me. As it is I’m rating in a 3.5 and mainly because Charlie aggravated me. Honestly, I don’t know why Jake continued to put up with her for as long as he did, especially after the things she did to him. She made bad decisions, most of which was due to her own selfish reasons (yep, she had her reasons but to those extremes? maybe it's just me). Charlie lost her husband and decided to get wasted on what would have been their 2 year anniversary, ok, in a bar, ok where any man could have taken advantage of her, ok (all the while talking to herself). She ends up having a one night stand with a guy in the bar who paid her tab which results in a pregnancy only she doesn’t find out until after she ditches the guy; whom by the way is Jake. 3 years later she starts new employment with a company that Jake (her one night stand) happens to own. But does she tell him about their child? No. She selfishly keeps the knowledge to herself. Umm, what about his feelings on matter, or your curious daughter? Children need their fathers. Of course he finds out later and despite all this Jake still carries a torch for her and wants her and the kid in his life…like permanently (marriage & the whole shebang). He pours his heart out to her and she pushes him away by telling him that she only want a ‘cut buddy’ relationship only. Fed up and hurt by the constant rejections Jake gives her want she wants, a manner in which he communicates needs of their daughter only… but then she gets upset because Jake ain’t giving her no more TLC (can’t have your cake and eat it too boo). Jake gets in a life threatening accident and only then does she pour her heart out to him—of course, when he incoherent and walking that fine line between life and death (selfish!) The man has been having bouts of mild depression since she threw his love back in his face and now you decide to declare your undying love for him? All that considered they did get their HEA, a good ending I might add but that damn Charlie? I was sort of happy when Helen (Jake’s sister) ripped her new one.
Oh, and the sex scenes? HOTT! though a bit more than I expected from this book.
What a Lovely book to read. I couldn't put it down. Charlie is so in love with her husband Paul that when he dies on their second anniversary she finds herself in a bar getting drunk and totally depressed. Jake is the Knight in Shining Armour. He makes sure Charlie has a bed to sleep in, since all the hotels all full. But when he wakes and hears her sobbing, well he can't resist to console her. One thing leads to another. After there night of passion Charlie skips out of town without a word to Jake. Jake is totally shocked to find her missing. And does try to find her to no avail. Three years pass and Charlie finds herself employed by noother but Jake her one time lover. He owns the company that she just started work for. And Charlie is trying to avoid him because she has a secret she doesn't want him to find out.
I have read and enjoyed other books from this author but this one really didn't grab my attention. The story was over-the-top and I think there were too many characters involved, too many twists ans turns and the drama would just never end!!!Even the dialogue for some reason seems forced and unnatural at time.the main characters annoyed me and I really felt like their connection was superficial. The heroine just seemed to be weak, undecisive and all over the place while the hero was just a womanizer who fell in love because of great sex(really??).It's too bad, because if she didn't try to incorporate on too many thnings, this book could have been decent...
It was a good story. Very steamy. The man Jake turned out to be an emotional wreck due to Charlie's callous disregard for his feelings because she was afraid of being hurt. He knew what he wanted, she knew what she wanted, but was trying to protect her heart. There were some unresolved issues in the book that should, not could have played out. Maybe Ms. Vaughn was going to use the two best friends drama to make a second book. If not, she should have alluded to what happened between them since it was a bone of contention through the whole story. Also she had unresolved issue with her parents which doesn't sit well either. Other than those items I enjoyed the book.
With Ms. Vaughn books, they're either a hit or miss for me. This one was definitely a miss as I couldn't, for the life of me, get into the story. I felt the hero was too much of a crying sucker when it came to the heroine; and the heroine was just spoiled and completely selfish all around. I can get behind flawed characters, I prefer them to 'perfection', but these two weren't to my liking in the least. With that being said...I wish Steve/Laura had a story, their hatred toward one another made me curious as to wth happened between the two ^_-
I really wanted to like this one better. I need a good IR fix but this one didn't cut it. There was too much drama. I didn't care for the characters...I couldn't believe they was in love especially the heroine who didn't come around until the end...oh the end, became hokey. I didn't like that. It was just blah!
I found this book well written, what I loved most about the characters (not just the love scene) were the vulnerability shown through great writing. I also loved that the obvious issues, race and status did not play a significant role in the delivery. great Read
OMG I read this book like 6 years ago. I have been looking for the book title and author for the longest. You guys just don't know how happy I am right at this moment. It's like I just won the power ball. Lol this book was a great read
I love Eve Vaughn as a writer. This book is steamy. I just wish that we could have heroines in books that know what they want and are not afraid to get what they want.
I like to read stories that has a secret child involved. This could have been a really good story, but the vulgar language just took that away for me. I'm glad this was a borrowed ebook :)
I really liked this story. But let me get this criticism out of the way. I really dislike when authors write a where the main characters have a one night stand, they separate and go their ways. Then the female discovers she's pregnant. She used the baby, raised it alone for a few years before she is reunited with said one night stand. This is where you lose me, the story always have the female deciding to keep the fact that the guy has a child away from the Dad. This usually results in a conflict between them. This is such a "Beyatch" move. I have a hard time getting into the female characters because of this selfish move. This was the case for Charlie, her initial decision not to tell Jake he had a daughter almost thinned the book for me. As it was, I could never get into Charlie's character. I loved Jake, sweet little Kristy and most of the other characters. Please, please, please stop writing that sexist carp into these stories. I know there are some selfish heifers out there, but must they be so prevalent in these stories. Now I must say, I'm intrigued by the potential storylines involving Laura and Steve. And what's up with some of Jake's old book ups, first appear they may go away quietly. That Sandy chick will probably reappear. I love that Jake has his babies now, I want to see him and Charlie grow stronger. I hope there will be subsequent stories.
