This nonfiction, informational text covers five record breakers in the sport of soccer. While the information might be appropriate for readers in grades 4 - 6, they would have to be fairly knowledgeable about professional soccer to understand the significance of these record breakers. The athletes who are chosen are not recognizable to those who are not enthusiasts. While well-known soccer stars like Mia Hamm and Pele are mentioned in captions and sidebars, they are not the focus of this text. On the other hand, the quality of the photography is outstanding. Each record breaker is presented in full-color, action-filled photos. For a beginning soccer player or fan, this visual element might be enough to get them to read on further about Tim Howard, the team from Brazil, Kristine Lilly, Lionel Messi, and Landon Donovan. I would recommend this title as an additional purchase to add to either a public library or school collection that needs more diversity in its team sports or sports records section.
