Any alert child who is taken often to a reasonably well run library... Knows that this book tells the truth. Librarians are essential members of every community.
This book is super-easy to read, explaining what librarians do in the simplest possible terms:
They help children. They also help adults.
That's for sure. Just today some excellent librarians at my library -- The Loudoun County Regional Library in Sterling, Virginia -- helped me to check out a pile of easy reader books, including many about libraries and librarians.
As for story time with a children's librarian? Back in the day, my son loved it. I adored it. So I totally relate to the contagious sweetness in that part of this book, on Pages 18-19.
FIVE STARS of applause all around, to Julie Murray and to librarians!
This is a short, but interesting look at what librarians do, specifically school librarians. One of the librarians at my local library recommended this to me, since she knows that this is what I want to do for my second career. I loved being able to share with our girls the work I'll focus on as well as the education required to become a school librarian.
The narrative is simple, although there are lots of photo captions and Did You Know? blurbs scattered throughout. This can make reading the book aloud a bit disjointed, but on the whole, it's a rather informative and interesting book. The photographs are big, colorful, and contemporary, which is refreshing for a book like this. I think this would be a great book for an elementary school student to use as research about a job or just to learn about this career. We really enjoyed reading it together.
