Portsmouth Police Detective Michael Lawrence is a career policeman with a stellar reputation, a loving family, and a good future ahead of him - that is, until his life is upended by an accident that left his daughter in a coma and his wife in a state of grieving. Now, months into his ordeal, he's called in to investigate the mysterious death of beloved music professor, Emma Gagnon. It doesn't look like murder... until someone breaks into Emma's office and another body turns up.
Lawrence and his partner, Sohm, find themselves drawn into a complex web involving a missing girl, drugs, a popular author, a disappointed man, a grieving widower, a driven student with a past, a drug ring, and a killer who will strike again.
But as the body count rises and the case takes on new and disturbing twists, everyone including Michael is beginning to wonder: has the consummate professional finally lost perspective?

Killarney Traynor has crafted a masterful mystery with a robust cast of characters and a head-scratcher of a who-dunnit. Michael Lawrence: The Season of Darkness introduces us to homicide detective Michael Lawrence, a steadfast and bright investigator who is in the midst of a personal tragedy straight out of every parents worst nightmares. When a beloved professor from the local college dies under suspicious circumstances, it takes everything Detective Lawrence has to keep his two worlds, personal and professional, apart. When one of his main suspects becomes his second murder victim in as many days, the tension really ratchets skyward!
Killarney Traynor provides a veritable feast for her readers with a bevy of characters to love, loathe, and suspect in this terrible crime: the famous author hesitantly returning to her alma matter as a guest lecturer... the owner of the local bookshop with obvious unrequited and lingering feelings for his college flame... the orphan whose father was killed in a tragic accident and who has a secret she’d do anything to keep... plus so many more! When I started Michael Lawrence: The Season of Darkness I worried about the author’s ability to keep all the characters engaging and involved, but as the story wove on I found myself fully enveloped in their essences. Each character feels whole and fully realized. The mystery and the motives of all the players was well thought and plausible. Overall, I found this a highly entertaining read and look forward to more works by Killarney Traynor.
Everything about this book was amazing. The writing style is wonderful, the characters are well developed, and the plot keeps up a good pace to keep you turning the pages. I will be on the lookout for more books by Killarney Traynor now.
The writing is flawless. The story, while written in the classic whodunit style, is entirely original. The dialogue is natural and highly entertaining. This is an ambitious story, yet tightly written - with so many twists that a less talented author would have had a difficult time avoiding plot holes.
But the first of the two major strengths of MICHAEL LAWRENCE: THE SEASON OF DARKNESS is found in the character development. This is that rare book which is populated with characters you feel you know personally, and who stay with you after you finish reading. And while I was already hooked by Chapter Three, and thoroughly enjoyed Traynor's yarn-spinner tone for the first half of the novel, the second half of Michael Lawrence takes off like it's shot from a cannon - and that's the second great strength of this novel. I read it over a span of three days, but read the second half in only a few hours. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
“Michael Lawrence: The Season of Darkness” by Killarney Traynor Book review by Jessica Lucci
Music, literature, religion, and murder. Detective Michael Lawrence must come to terms with his own motives as he attempts to solve the mystery behind increasingly complex crimes. This is a must-read for book sleuths.
