Arc received from author in exchange for an honest review...hmmm, this is the 3rd book i have read for Lucy, and unfortunately I haven't up'd my star rating from 3.5 stars 😕
Kept Safe was a different sub-gen to her usual DD/lg, this one being a "kidnapping" theme, which i enjoyed.
Reading other peoples reviews has made me actually resubmit a new review due to the fact i dont think some readers have a clue? I dont want to dictate what readers enjoy or their opinions, but! I dont think a lot of the readers who reviewed this have done any serious reading either? Dark, BDSM, 5🌟? if i purchased this book going on those reviews i would be sorely disappointed.
Kept Safe is a lightly dark (if at all) read, with a bdsm loosely based theme. As far as "Dark" goes...try reading some Pepper Winters, thats dark! This read had a little violence but nothing too hardcore, and a not to heavy kidnapping scene, so i presume that is what people are rating the "dark" on?
Bdsm, yeah, nah. This guy liked to spank ass and had devious thoughts, but if you have read BDSM, then you know it is 99% of the time consentual, rules, safewords and kinkery tools of the trade...this did not. This had kinky sex, a little slap and tickle and "be a good girl and do what i say" or ill fuck you...hard! But the sex and chemistry was good.
Ok, as for the characters themselves. I liked Jack. He was manly, muscular and knew how to please...everything you want from your alpha. His intentions were good even if he went the wrong way about them? E.g. the kidnapping didnt make sense to me, his violence was unnecessary and i think he could have told her what was happening, why she was in danger, and got the same outcome? He kidnapped her for his own pleasure...and that was the only reason it happened!
Bella, oh Bella. I didnt really care for her character and nothing about her really appealed to me unfortunately. She portrayed the victim well but was irritatingly annoying with her "I'm scared" attitude one minute then "Im hot and wet and want to fuck him" the next.
I like my female leads to have a little gumption, at least fight a little? She could have escaped, called for help quite a few times but didnt and i dont think Jack was that scary or intimidating to stop her from doing so, so why was she a hostage again?
The storyline was a good concept and in the beginning i thought we were going somewhere interesting, but unfortunately it sort of sizzled out. It had too many unanswered questions, not enough background on the "whys and wheres" and just became too unrealistic with the plot and characters actions etc. I think if the story and characters had more depth, and the book a little less rushed, it would have been more enjoyable. I didn't feel any emotion or connection which ruins a read for me, i like to relate on some level and feel like i am living the story with them!
Ok, to finish...next time i would love for Lucy to give more "behind-the-scenes" to the story and characters as a whole and really try to get that connection happening between story, characters and reader. Give us the fine details that make them who they are...this can make a big difference!
I love Lucy and hate knocking an authors blood, sweat and tears...i dont want to make anyone feel bad, but i also want to give an honest rendition of what i have read. I feel like a lot of arc reviewers give 5 stars, great reviews because they are afraid they wont receive further arcs?
I give feedback that i hope is going to be taken constructively? If you read a lot of the 3 star reviews, we pretty much say the same thing...5 star reviews should be for seriously good writers and reads that affect you long after you finish the book! 💜
