Award-winning author Christie Golden has written over thirty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. She has over a million books in print.

2009 will see no fewer than three novels published. First out in late April will be a World of Warcraft novel, Athas: Rise of the Lich King. This is the first Warcraft novel to appear in hardcover. Fans of the young paladin who fell so far from grace will get to read his definitive story.

In June, Golden’s first Star Wars novel, also a hardcover, sees print. Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi—Omen is the second in a nine-book series she is co-authoring with Aaron Allston and Troy Denning. Also in June comes the conclusion of Golden’s StarCraft: The Dark Templar Saga with the release of Twlight, the third book in the series. The first two are Firstborn and Shadow Hunters.

2004 saw the launch of an original fantasy series called The Final Dance, from LUNA Books. The first novel in the series, On Fire's Wings, was published in July of that year. The second, In Stone’s Clasp , came out in September of 2005. With In Stone’s Clasp, Golden won the Colorado Author’s League Top Hand Award for Best Genre Novel for the second time. The third book, Under Sea’s Shadow, is available only as an e-book

Golden is also the author of two original fantasy novels from Ace Books, King's Man and Thief and Instrument of Fate, which made the 1996 Nebula Preliminary Ballot. Under the pen name of Jadrien Bell, she wrote a historical fantasy thriller entitled A.D. 999, which won the Colorado Author's League Top Hand Award for Best Genre Novel of 1999.

Golden launched the TSR Ravenloft line in 1991 with her first novel, the highly successful Vampire of the Mists , which introduced elven vampire Jander Sunstar. Golden followed up Vampire with Dance of the Dead and The Enemy Within . In September of 2006, fifteen years to the month, The Ravenloft Covenant: Vampire of the Mists enabled Jander Sunstar to reach a whole new audience.

Other projects include a slew of Star Trek novels, among them The Murdered Sun , Marooned , and Seven of Nine , and "The Dark Matters Trilogy," Cloak and Dagger , Ghost Dance and Shadow of Heaven .

The Voyager novel relaunch, which includes Homecoming and The Farther Shore , were bestsellers and were the fastest-selling Trek novels of 2003. Golden continued writing VOYAGER novels even though the show went off the air, and enjoyed exploring the creative freedom that gave her in the two-parter called Spirit Walk, which includes Old Wounds and Enemy of my Enemy .

Golden has also written the novelization of Steven Spielberg's Invasion America and an original "prequel," On The Run , both of which received high praise from producer Harve Bennett. On The Run, a combination medical thriller and science fiction adventure, even prompted Bennett to invite Golden to assist in crafting the second season of the show, if it was renewed.

Golden lives in Loveland, Colorado, with her artist husband and their two cats.

I somehow missed this was a novelization of a movie or that it's was even a movie with titel. Not bad story per say but didn't evoke any deeper feelings from me and do not have an urge to watch the movie

Consigliato!

I loved the movie so much I immediately bought the book novelization. What can I say?! It’s exactly the same as the movie sooo of course I loved this as well. The world is so rich and beautiful and colorful full of strange and unique creatures.
How about a sequel?! 😏

description

Seguono missioni, battute, scontri a fuoco, droidi e robot, alieni trasformanti e alieni antropofagi, alieni bellissimi e mostri con tre narici, loschi figuri e loschi affari.

It was really boring. There was hardly any action and if there was it was really short. The main story line was bad it was just valerian and laurline thinking about getting married while trying to do a Misson which made no sense. It was a confusing read. I only picked this book in the library as I was inbetween books and wanted a short read while waiting for the book to be delivered. I was desperate to finish it so I can say I I read it I thought the book what's not interesting. I think the book and film would be better if it was not based on a love story but about the pearls and getting more background on them. The only thing I liked was the converter a small pet allien which can multiply gems which is cool but hardly ever mentioned until it was necessary to the plot. Honestly don't read it the dialogue is confusing it switches to different people so you don't know who is who. Barely any action the aliens mentioned are not important which is a shame as I think they could be more interesting to know what the species of aliens are and what they do. I didn't like how valerian went to pimp to seek for someone which made no sense how he knew where to go and who to ask for. The person who was entertaining him just switched to different outfits which is lame and tired to be sexy but failed. The scene could be replaced with something else and it wouldn't be missed. The person dancing turned out to be an alien that can mimic anything. I would love to know how valerian knew where this certain alien was to be able to rescue lauline. Most of the book was about rescuing each other getting into trouble where it could be avoided. Bubble dying (the changer) didn't stur any emotion on me as she was just a small part and I didn't get why her dying affected the other characters. I thought her death was funny. The book made zero sense. Glad that it was a library book not worth buying.
I just wished it was more focused on the aliens then the love story that was awkward and unprofessional for two agents to even think about. It was boring, predictable, confusing, slow, and no bloody action. The action scenes were confusing and was not written in a good way or explained certain elements very well.
I haven't seen the film, watched a trailer and it looks worse than the book. I wished I didn't waste my time on this book.

Finally done with this one. Have you seen the movie? Then you've read the book. Have you read the book? Then the only reason you'd watch the movie is to figure out what the aliens look like. There is little to no internal dialogue that advanced the story, mostly it was just about the go0-goo eyes that they would make at each other. I cannot recommend this to anyone, really.

Since I had the audiobook: The performance was kind of stilted, but I'm going to blame the source material for that.

Experiencing the movie in a different medium...

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is one of my comfort watches. I love that movie with all its stunning visuals and characters but also its flaws.

So when I found out about this novelization yesterday and saw that the audiobook was available on Audible Plus, I naturally had to listen to it immediately.
Did I rewatch the movie only a few days ago? Yes, yes, I did.... but idc 😂

➡️I think your enjoyment of this book will heavily depend on whether you enjoyed the movie and if you go into it not expecting more than what it had to offer.⬅️

The Dialogue is 95% the same as in the movie, so not a lot was added.
It did feel strange to listen to it as a book instead of watching it on screen tbh.
But I liked the little insight into their thoughts. It was also interesting to have a few additional scenes that probably got cut from the movie but had enough room in the book.

I think the banter between Valerian & Laureline came better across in the movie, but their relationship “status“ (if that makes any sense) was better in the book.

This is also a rare instance where I would say watch the movie first.
I honestly don’t know if I would have enjoyed it as much had I not seen the movie first. (Especially because I had all the visuals in my head already)

So would I recommend this book?
- No, if you expect more than what the movie has to offer or if you haven't watched the movie
- Yes, if you liked the movie and want to experience it in a different way

If anyone has recs similar to this movie/book, PLEASE let me know!!! I NEED more 😫

P.S. still pretty sad that we didn’t get a second one :(

So this is the novelisation of the movie, and I must admit, I haven’t seen the movie yet, so it will be interesting to compare the two when I get round to seeing it.
With Luc Besson at the wheel though, it was always going to be interesting, ‘The Fifth Element’ is still one of my all-time favourite movies just for its pure quirkiness and sheer brilliance.
And having read Valerian now, if you liked ‘The Fifth Element’, you will definitely enjoy this. Whilst they are different stories, the feel of the universe and the characters is very similar, as well as the one-liners and there are some commonalities with the underlying messages about peace and love within the galaxy.
In this story, Agents Valerian and Laureline, who have obviously worked together for some time, find themselves sent on a mission that although should be relatively easy for these two highly decorated and experienced veterans, suddenly seems to go horribly wrong. And this is through no fault of their own, it is because there is a much deeper story that is going on in the background, and they are but simple pawns in this game. However, for anyone who plays chess, pawns can become very powerful, and such is the case here, as both Valerian and Laureline decide to step up and get involved to try and uncover what is going on, and this obviously leads to some furious action scenes, some intense moments, and some wonderful one-liners. The mind reading jellyfish that you have to put on your head was one of my favourite bits.
Having read this, I am even more excited to see the movie, as the book, written by Christie Golden who is known for her amazing works in the Star Wars universe as well as some other exceptional Sci-fi books, has obviously done the movie a lot of justice. Golden has managed to capture the full scale of the multitude of alien races in all their different aspects, from stunning beauty, to slime ridden toad and everything in-between. Golden has also done an exceptional job of depicting each of the fascinating and mesmerising scenes that Besson has created for the movie, allowing the reader to become totally lost in each worlds being described, or the station itself.
One of the best parts of the story as well is the summary at the start, bringing you up to speed on where the galaxy is at now, and how Humanity has reached this point.
This is a combination of spectacular and beautiful worlds and aliens, but with all out action scenes that you expect from Besson/Golden, bringing you this incredible story of two agents who unwittingly find themselves not just trying to save their own lives, but that of several alien races, and possibly the city of a thousand planets, in the process uncovering the Galaxy’s secrets.
If you liked ‘The Fifth Element’ at all, you will love this. Having read this first, I doubt it is going to have any impact on the movie for me, so you can safely read it without seeing the movie, and if you have seen the movie, there are always bonuses that you get in the book that aren’t in the movie – so it's a win-win. Well worth it!

Fantastic Novelization

I don't know what it is about great novelizations that make me happy, but Christie Golden delivered a better interpretation than the box office flop. Now don't get me wrong I loved the Rihanna dance scene, but I felt that the chemistry between the actors just wasn't there. Now that's not to say it didn't have its upsides, but it flopped for a reason.

4 stars out of 5.

What if we all adopted the mantra of helping one another along this often brutal path. I'm not talking about a fortnightly service commitment used to brag or brandish as a weapon for those not living up to our standards of excellence. And never for praise, but anonymous or maybe something they'll never even know happened but it makes their life easier nonetheless. And not once in the morning so you can share about it in your noon AA meeting, yoga class or girls luncheon. No, I mean all day, everyday and never spoken of. I was listening to Valerian on Audible and passed a shopping cart that was far away from the store. I pushed it back for them and this mantra is what I thought about the whole time. That's how awful this piece is. I can no longer abide Hollywood and their formulaic, repugnant upper deckers. In taking personal responsibility to MAGA, I have stumbled upon a new acronym: NAHWC.

Well the movie that this novelization is of, is my favorite movie of all time, and so this novel was basically the same but you get more of the character’s thoughts which I love! I’ve also read the comics of Valerian and Laureline by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières, which I also adore! I really hope, but am not holding my breath for a sequel, but Valerian and Laureline’s relationship which each other is my absolute favorite in books I’ve read, movies I’ve seen and comics I’ve read! Would definitely recommend!!

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets: The Official Movie Novelization - Christie Golden (2017)

Genres: Science Fiction
Pages: 285
Rating: 8/10

Themes: Natural simplicity as superior to technological complexity/ Distrust of power and the suppression of individuality/ Friendship and teamwork/ Compassion/ Liberal Humanism

Opener:
“The stars were not eternal, but they were ancient nearly beyond reckoning.”

Summary:
In the 28th century, special operatives, Valerian and Laureline, work together to maintain order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe.

Verdict:
I have been a fan of the movie ever since it came out. Too bad it did not do so well at the box office. I would have liked sequel after sequel for this ravishing sci-fi spectacle. More Star Wars contenders would be nice. This novelization has been written sumptuously by Christie Golden. Though it does not explore much beyond what was in the movie, I absolutely loved the narration. One thing people had gripes over about the movie was the characterization and the seemingly unearned relationship between our protagonists: arrogant Major Valerian and his partner, no-nonsense Sergeant Laureline. Most stories tend to show two characters coming together, facing ordeals, and eventually falling in love. Here, though, the relationship between the two leads is off that beaten path. They already seem engaged in an ersatz romantic relationship prior to the start of the story. Now, for the author to have any progress in this workplace-flirting is to have one person seriously fall in love with the other. And that is difficult when one of them is caddish and the other seemingly frustrated with the other’s advance. Not much is different in the book too. Though the relationship between the two agents is the central part of the story, it is still the story’s weakest element. I found the depiction of Mul world and its inhabitants, especially in the prologue scene, absolutely riveting. The prologue is one solid hook if I have ever read one. The opening line of the story, too, is an absolute banger. The book suffers the same in the development of the relationship between the two leads as did the movie, but the book is one surreal and beautiful dive into the Galana Sea.

I saw Valerian and the city of a thousand planets as a movie when it happened to be on tv on one of the rare occasions I actually had my tv switched on. The movie was nothing spectacular but I found it ok...a little too much like Star wars but entertaining enough. Later kind of the same thing happened with this book. I came across it at my library by accident and thought why not read it. The result is the same as with the movie, nothing spectacular but it passes the time.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Firts of all, we gotta remember this book is a novelization of the movie, not the other way around. I´ve previously read some movie novelizations and this one has the same problem as the ones I´ve previously read. I feel like the narration´s flat. It´s too much describing what happens, the action, and not enough what the characters are thinking/feeling. I understand that might be difficult because the characters´ thoughts are not exactly portayed in the movie and this novelization probably tries to stay loyal to the movie. Only it makes me feel like I can´t connect with the characters and they feel superficial and one-dimensional. There were obviously some thoughts/feelings described but I just felt like it wasn´t enough.

Most of the time the story concentrates on Valerian and Laureline but at times there are chapters, or paragraphs that let us see glimpses of the minds of other characters, like general Okto-Bar. These feel kind of random to me because they aren't systematic but just a paragraph here and a chapter there. However, I do realize the these chapter might be necessary to explain what is happening elsewhere and why those characters act like they do.

I don't really like Valerian as a character. He's not particularly interesting and his fixation with Laureline feels a bit out of the blue. I guess that's because the book basically begins with Valerian asking Laureline to marry him, so we don't get to see how his feelings toward her develop in the first place. We do get to see some of Laureline´s feelings and how they change during the story but still one problem remains when it comes to their romance: I feel zero chemistry between them. Like none at all. Maybe that's just me but I just don't feel like they suit each other and I almost feel like they know it too judging by the chemistry. Anyway, that's probably just me :D

As a novel this isn't a hidden diamond of literature but if you like the movie, do read it. It's probably meant for you!

I love the movie Valerian. It was a simple plot, but the visuals were breathtaking. The intricacy and world development were amazing, so I was hoping for a lot when I read the novelization. And in this case the book is not better than the movie. I've read excellent novelizations of movies. Alan Dean Foster did a great job with his novelization of Alien. Not only did he had some interesting explanations for things that happened in the movie, but he wrote as if I was sitting right then reliving the movie. This Valerian movie novelization came nowhere close to that. Luc Besson, the writer and director of Valerian wrote a 600 page book about the alien world and characters. Couldn't any of that have been used to flesh out the world building in this book? Action descriptions were just so-so and the relationship between the two main characters really had little believable romantic development. Too bad.

I loved the visuals of the movie but I felt so much of the story was cut for the sake of keeping up the pacing. The book fills in a lot of gaps but it is still missing some important factors that I think r simply lost in translation culturally because the screenwriter is French and I think their are some things that just aren’t explained to the audience in English that are understood by a French audience. Such as the dynamic between Valarian and Lauraline. In the book it seems like they are already in a somewhat casual relationship. But she is reluctant to make things serious because of his flirtatiousness and his interest in other women. Whereas in the movie there is a flirtation between them, but I don’t get the feeling they are together other than work partners. I dunno. I thought the whole concept was great and interesting and different. But on the grounded character level I think this story could use some work. To make it believable and more likeable.

As my first book in the genre, Valerian has made it a fast favorite. I’ve already purchased three more books! I found the novelization to be as vividly stunning and as equally actioned packed as the movie. All the epic scenes are there, but they’re tweaked in such a way as to not feel like you’re reading a shot–for–shot screenplay. Plus there’s new backstory for all the main characters that makes their choices that much more on brand, cause now you know the why of, why they like/do that for? Perhaps these are traits specific to this book. Or perhaps they’re a characteristic specific of Christie Golden’s storytelling. I don’t really know, cause as I mentioned before, this is the first novelization I’ve ever read. 10/10 would recommended!

May my next foyer into the next novelization be just as good; finger crossed!

This book is a real mix for me. There were parts were I was definitely getting into it but then there were things that would jar me out the story flow. This could have been a lot better and I think one of the things that was a problem for me was Valerian and Laureline’s relationship. I liked the idea of him professing his feelings but her not sure whether to believe them while at the same time have feelings herself but I didn’t like the way it was executed and wish they had left off as friends instead. Maybe the movie does it better and it doesn’t translate well into the book. I still will try the movie out but I really wish this had been better.

I also wish I didn’t drop it in a tub of water that now the book is falling apart and the pages are a wrinkled mess.

CARA DELVIGNE!! CARA DELVIGNE!! CARA DELVIIIIiiiiIIiGNE!!!!!

*clears throat*
Right, now we've got that out of the way, let's talk about how I hoovered up this book like noo noo sucking up Tubbycustard.

Why was I so into it? Because Valerian: City of A Thousand Planets was THE MOST UNDERRATED FILM OF 2017 THAT'S WHY.

According to some people, this is just my "opinion". Jokes on them, because after meditating for 3432 hours God contacted me and confirmed that this is actually the infallible truth of the universe.

This is direct novelization of the movie, so there is nothing more than that. Maybe some inner thoughts of the characters, but not much. This book is great for people who loved the movie and want to rewatch it in a bit different form, but don't expect any new information.
With that said, it is well written, much better than I expected from a movie novelization. I read it with great pleasure, as I loved the movie. It also carries all the flaws that the movie had. The plot lacks logic and our heros really don't achieve much. They don't solve any mystery, they just happen to be where they need to be.

I liked the movie a lot (even though I am aware it was rather mediocre fantasy, but I loved the world and Valerian and Laureline), so I liked the book too.

"That's where you're wrong. Love, real love, it's more powerful than anything else, Valerian. It's more powerful than rules and laws. More powerful than any army or government."

I loved the movie so it is no surprise I wanted to read the novelization because any opportunity I have to read an even deeper dive into this world I will take it. The author takes the time to keep the story at it's core the same while going deeper into the characters and their motivations.

I especially loved the romance side of things---I ship them so hard.

If you enjoyed the movie I recommend reading this but even if you haven't give either the movie or this book a shot. It is a blast.

Content: Language throughout (primarily a-word), some sexual innuendo, violence

I walked into Dollar Tree this one time looking around, and holy cow, guess what I saw? hmm, take the wildest guess... It was this gorgeous book right here, and I was ecstatic because hello, who wouldn´t be? I obviously watched the movie first which was stunning really, I mean it had Cara D. in it so yeah. But I love both the book and the movie equally. The cover is also from the movie but I guess that's what makes it more exciting because you can actually imagine these people doing these things. overall this was a fun light read, and I can´t wait to see the movie again. Very sci-fi which who knew I liked? I´m more into thrillers and contemps but i like these too.

P.S: SEQUEL PLEASEEEE :)

It’s not very often a book is based off of a movie, but this is one of them. It’s the first one I’ve ever read, and though it wasn’t as great as I hoped it would be, it was a good book. I had a hard time understanding the first couple chapters as they revolved kind of around the science behind space travelling and stuff, but since I had seen the movie it helped me understand it better.

It was filled with action scenes and before you managed to catch your breath regarding one you were thrust into the next one. It had some mild language, and a pretty intense romance scene at the very end.
