What Would Crazy Horse Do?

Rate this book
THIS IS NOT A BOOK. This text will be published in a paired edition with The Thanksgiving Play soon, but this book does not exist. A SUPER LIBRARIAN NEEDS TO DELETE THIS ENTRY.

Twin siblings (Duran and Littlesun), the last members of their tribe, have just lost their grandfather when the KKK (Inouye and McNew) comes knocking with hopes of forming an alliance. When the two groups are brought together, they find that sometimes they are asking the same questions. When is race separation racism? And when is it essential preservation? It’s a question both sides need to answer before it is too late. This story reveals the challenges contemporary Native Americans face when fighting extinction in a world that seems to have already forgotten they exist. The siblings attempt to find their voices in the outside world, while preserving the heritage that is now theirs alone to carry forward.

An absolutely heart-breaking, gut-wrenching play. Like the other one by FastHorse I read recently, this is another that I really want to see performed. I don't think I could say anymore. Read it! It's worth it.

My rating: 5/5
Would I own/re-read it?: Unsure!
TW: Racism, the KKK, Genocide, Suicide, Colonialism, Systemic Oppression, Propoganda
Does the animal die?: No animals are harmed in this play.

Dark humour really isn’t my thing, but I did really admire the craft and the authorial intent. I think this would be a really powerful play to produce and it really leans into questioning the audience’s perspectives of right and wrong in a unique way.

This was a really great read. I enjoyed this a lot more than the companion piece “The Thanksgiving Play”. Really dark humor but it was a fascinating look at race and when a need for separation and individualism becomes racism.

The premise of this show is unexpected and provoking - I think it would be interesting to see performed. I do wish there was more clarity about the end .

Another play by Fasthorse. As a playwright myself, I am in awe of her skills. The premise of this play is so unexpected, so theatrical, so dramatic ... wonderful.
