Rainey Bell, a former FBI Behavioral Analyst, has had a couple of quiet years since her last brush with death. Her old teammate with the BAU and her children's Godfather, Danny McNally, pays a visit to North Carolina from Quantico to escort Rainey into the Butner Federal Correctional Complex. Rainy made a promise almost twenty years ago to a distraught mother of a missing child. The opportunity to fulfill that pledge, one she should never have made, presents itself in the form of Chance Obadiah Hale. The teenager Rainey believed responsible for Alyson Grayson's disappearance was now a man in prison who wanted to talk, but only to Rainey.
Can Rainey and Danny finally get to the truth about Alyson and Chance? Or, will Rainey's stubborn belief in his guilt put everyone she loves in mortal danger? Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Who will be the first to go?
How did a girl from the Outer Banks of North Carolina end up writing contemporary women's fiction in Oklahoma? Well, there has to be a woman involved. Bradshaw began her writing career in 2010, after leaving Theatre and teaching. Since then, her novels ranging from the popular romance, Waking Up Gray, to the Lambda Literary Award Finalists, thriller Rainey Nights and mystery Molly: House on Fire, have remained among Amazon’s bestsellers in lesbian fiction. All of Bradshaw’s books, thus far, are set in her beloved home state of North Carolina. She was transplanted from the coast to the Heartland by the love of her life, an Oklahoma girl, with whom she celebrate twenty-five years in June 2013. They have a son, Jon, and share their home with two dogs and two cats.
When her former FBI partner calls Rainey Bell gets pulled into another old case, one where she made a promise she has failed to keep. She told a distraught mother she would find her missing daughter, a promise she should never have made and a pledge that has played on her mind ever since. When Rainey is asked to talk to the man she thinks knows the answer she puts her FBI/BAU hat on once again to solve a ‘cold case’ from her past.
The Rainey Bell series is one of the best out there, constantly new, fresh and imaginative, with shocking tales of human depravity set against the ongoing cuteness of Rainey and Katie’s growing family. After stopping her young daughter becoming a soccer thug Rainey goes to Butner Federal Correctional Complex with Danny to talk to a deranged inbred suspected serial killer, and Rainey knows which is harder – controlling her precocious 5 year old.
Consistently well written RE Bradshaw’s books are always extremely well edited and produced, perfect examples of how good independent publishing can be when done properly. The stories are engrossing, drawing the reader into Rainey and Katies’ lives, and the twisted and brutal minds of the killers the BAU deal with. Like many avid fans this one got consumed in one sitting. RE Bradshaw pulls you right in and shuts the door behind you.
While each book is very much part of the series they all stand alone, and this is certainly readable without the back history of the other books, but why would you deprive yourself of the pleasure? Unfailingly good stories, wonderful strong women, top notch crime thrillers and a backdrop of a charming ongoing romance. Simply the best in class.
A fast paced clever thriller brimming with intrigue, insanity, danger, twists and shocking turns. It slowly builds up to an ingenious, nail biting, explosive climax. Some scenes were horrifying and make one’s blood run cold. I love how the book starts with telling about the murders etc. in chronological order and revealing backstories. A great starting point for this installment. The story has also a well-balanced cast of characters. Characters who are vividly and compelling. In short, a masterpiece.
oh wow, this turned out to be a great series and the final book has so many twisted and turns. The mysteries/thrillers were so well written and all the characters were definitely growing on me. Highly recommend to anyone looking for thriller/crime series.
A very talented author who draws the reader into the webs of the story from beginning to end. The only reason I put the book down, well actually my kindle, was to go to work. RE Bradshaw has mastered a craft, which I feel only a small amount of authors can do, by being able to write a tale to the point the reader can close their eyes and see the imagery she puts forth in her writings. As with a few other authors I have read over the years when travelling I felt I was on familiar terrain when visiting NC for the first time a couple of weeks ago. My travels put me in the Piedmont Triad area, and it felt like I had been there before. Again, it is a stand alone book, but just purchase all the Rainey Bell series as each one reveals more of Rainey, and you won't be lost with references from previous books.
Finally, after waiting for two years there is a new Rainey book. I chose it as thet first book to read in my "writing break" and don't regret it. Just like the other five books before this one is a thriller that will make you forget everything else and turn the pages as fast as possible. I don't want to give too much of the story away, Rainey is chasing a serial killer, she has chased almost twenty years ago, so a part of the story takes us to the past before we get into present time. The Hale family is a crazy bunch of people - as it their relation to each other. I can understand why Rainey's friend Danny leaves Washington, the orange money would drive me crazy too. Oh, and yes, there are no sex scenes in the book - but it's a thriller, so there don't have to be sex scenes. Only murders and thrilling moments.
2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Rainey with a Chance of Hale (A Rainey Bell Thriller #6) 1) Fast paced thriller. Even though this is part of a series it is written so that you didn't need to read the others before this one. Extremely well developed characters and the reader is kept guessing through the whole story. 2) Setting was always vivid and fit the story line. Quality of writing was good, spare, left something to the imagination of the reader, with good dialog. A few minor editing flaws, but on the whole a good surprise for a self-published book. 3) This is a well-paced, crisp story that follows through with what it promises to the reader. It's a strong example of its genre.
The book starts with a series of flashbacks to previous cases, which provide some of the background to this book’s main story. This is fairly interesting to begin with but soon gets bogged down with case details and Rainey’s obsession with her main suspect ‘Chance’. After visiting Chance in prison the story suddenly changes into a dramatic rescue. To be honest I found this change in the story a bit ‘clunky’ as it just came from nowhere. This wasn’t a typical Rainy investigation and although it was an OK read, it isn’t one of the author’s best books
Incidentally I actually found the brief incidents with their daughter ‘Weather’ to be the best parts of the book.
The Rainey Bell series is one of my favorites. The fresh stories are imaginative, with unsettling tales of human depravity set against the cuteness of Rainey and Katie’s growing family. After watching her young daughter play soccer being a little more aggressive than she needs to be, Rainey goes to Butner Federal Correctional Complex with Danny to talk to a deranged and scary suspected serial killer to figure out who is behind a murder that she has been trying to solve for years. As the story unfolds, we grow to enjoy Rainey, Katie, their children and all of the secondary characters.
If this is indeed the end, I will sorely miss this series.
I really love this series. This novel continued in the awesome vein that the rest of the series exhibits. I really enjoyed the fact Danny is looking to be a more permanent fixture in these stories, he is one of my favorite side characters. Cathleen is also looking like a great character that we will see more of (can't have too many kick ads women). Hope for many more in the Rainey series.
So happy to have Rainy, Katie their family and friends back in another fantastic thriller. I love this series and the dynamics between Rainy and those around her especially her and Katie's triple threat kids. The story was well paced and the events quite interesting, the Hale family were a sick bunch of individuals, really sick. I look forward to more stories of Rainy and her family including Wendy and Danny.
I am always totally committed when reading your work. You are definitely on my best authors list. Rainey, Katie and the crew are wonderful and cute as usual. Chance seriously needs mental help along with the rest of his twisted family. Those that are still alive and haven’t blown themselves up.
A must read for everyone that reads the Rainey Bell series. This was such a sweet look in on the Rainey Bell-Myers family that we don't get much in the main stories. It's nice break from the crime drama that I hope we get more of them in the future.
It took me just under 24 hours to finish the latest Rainey thiller. We never know about the evil that lives among us. Katie and Rainey will continue to raise their brood with danger all around them. Can't wait for the next chapter. Hey, Netflicks, how about a movie?
I loved Rainey with a Chance of Hale. Exciting, intriguing, fast paced and action packed. The Hale family (the bad guys) is a very sick, slick bunch. Great seeing Rainey and Katie together with their kids.
Another great book I so love the characters and the little ones are so adorable. I just would like to read more about Rainey and Katie love for each other more can't wait for the next book
Again a thrilling and can’t turn the page fast enough book! Bradshaw is on a roll. Rainey, Katie, and their wild posse never disappoints with action and love for each other.
All 6 of these are so good! I love the thriller/bad ass Rainey aspects but would also love to see more Rainey/Katie (if there are plans for another book - fingers crossed!).
This is the sixth book in the Rainey Bell series. I have read every one of them and am always eager to read the next one in the series.
Rainey Bell is a retired FBI behavioral analyst. She excels in her profession and always contends with someone who is attacking her, her family or her friends. This book is no exception.
In one of the reviews I read about this book, someone complained that there were no sex scenes. I believe that a strong, tightly written mystery does not need sex to make it better. Is there love in this book? Yes, there is, but it is shown in the way Rainey talks about her family.
I highly recommend this book. Although you can read it without reading the previous books in the series, I feel you would not appreciate how well Ms. Bradshaw develops her stories. I also suggest reading “Molly: House on Fire”. In “Molly”, Rainey is one of the main characters. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I love me some Rainey and Katie. I love how Danny and his Fiance was a big part of this storyline. The Hale family was one messed up family. But with out them this book wouldn't be. I loved how it started it out....the the ending had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Thank you R.E. Bradshaw for a great adventure. I hope we get more. I definitely recommend this book.
