Kaat is ready to marry her girlfriend Stone. They live together in Paris, are both pursuing their careers, and have even talked about having a baby. Then a motorcycle accident disrupts Kaat's plans, and she is confronted by flaws in their seemingly perfect life and a secret that could destroy everything.
Decent short story that would have been a five if it had ended on a different note and some other teeny technical things. I felt like it should have ended on a poignant note. But I guess the good/relieved? note it did end on made sense as she made a near escape from what would have been a train wreck marriage. But then it needed more doubt re Stone and the baby to point it up this way. I guess that was the Lucy Prideaux references. That was a lot of references.. Maybe they just didn’t work for me in the way there were supposed to. Also I felt like there was a slight timing issue at the point where she opens the letter and again at the end. Maybe it needed an extra beat. I feel a bit ridiculous for extolling my learned writing wisdom🤣, but hey ho. This story makes me appreciate the skill that goes into writing. I liked this story. Don’t expect others to be all in on something when you yourself aren’t. People can usually tell when you’re in/sincere.

I listened to this on Audible. This was a well done short story. The narrator pulled me and and I could feel all the nuances of emotions of the main character. Short stories are not my favorite, but I’m expanding what I’m reading and am finding greater value in short stories than I have in the past. That said, one of the things I dislike is when characters don’t talk to each other. This is why I rated this a 3 star though I like the sense of place the story gives very much.
interesting story but I feel like Stone didn't get to present her side. it was totally one sided point of view with her girlfriend completely deciding what she did with no input.
