Who would have thought that the discrimination of a black woman could lead to so many tragedies unfolding?

This book Small Great Things tells the story of Ruth, a discriminated black woman from the perspectives of the main characters Turk, Kennedy and Ruth herself. Ruth was relieved from her duties as a delivery nurse because of her skin colour by a White Supremacist father. The baby she was supposed to attend to died while Ruth was alone with the baby in the bursary and this led to a court case that would teach us lessons about empathy, forgiveness and love.

"Some lessons can't be taught. They simply have to be learned." - Jodi Picoult

This incident has not only affected Ruth's life but also the people around her, especially her son, Edison. However, with empathy, forgiveness and love, all things can heal.

Racism comes in many forms; active racism, passive racism and even when we are being overly nice to the minority groups.

P.S. Small Great Things is an important novel that not only sheds light on discrimination that people of colour face but also teaches us important values in life that we must keep close to our hearts.

Best book I've read all year and I've read a lot of books.
This book looks at race from all angles - black people who experience it, the extreme ideology of white supremacists, and your ordinary white person who thinks they aren't racist but fail to recognize their white privilege.
At times this book made me uncomfortable, angry, sad and unsettled. Though it is a work of fiction I found it relevant to what is happening today in society and it sickens me that people of color are treated as less.
I highly recommend it, though it will leave you feeling quite uncomfortable at times, it's a reality that I think is important to learn about especially if you are white.

I didn't like it at all...I see enough racial bias and conflict in the news not to have to read about it to0.

Well written
Inside the brains and hearts
Inside the lives and hates
The ability to empathize is not the same as understanding
And not all
Motives are without the need for introspection

Great book!
Speaking for myself, learning about racism and white privilege is a long time experience. Meaning I've got a long way to go.
This book was recommended to me by a library patron who told me it helped her better understand what's happening in the US today.
The story is that a black nurse was forbidden to touch the baby of a white supremacist. The hospital went along with it.
Things of course happen and the nice white female lawyer defends the nurse.
There is so much that is learned by the lawyer along the way.
I listened to this book. There is the use of the word "nigger" quite a bit which is hard to hear. But this story couldn't be told authentically without it.

As black history month ends, this is an excellent book for my white and black sisters and brothers to read. The novel expresses the frustration on racism in a profound way through the story of Ruth.
