Join Chuck as he explores Dr. Luke’s carefully researched and strikingly human account of the life of Jesus. Luke describes the man, Jesus, and His ministry in vivid detail. He shows that Jesus is the perfect God-man, the all-powerful Creator who became human to save all of humanity, Jew and Gentile alike.
The 15-volume Swindoll’s Living Insights New Testament Commentary series draws on Gold Medallion Award–winner Chuck Swindoll’s 50 years of experience with studying and preaching God’s Word. His deep insight, signature easygoing style, and humor bring a warmth and practical accessibility not often found in commentaries.
Each volume combines verse-by-verse commentary, charts, maps, photos, key terms, and background articles with practical application. The newly updated volumes now include parallel presentations of the NLT and NASB before each section. This series is a must-have for pastors, teachers, and anyone else who is seeking a deeply practical resource for exploring God’s Word.
Charles Swindoll has devoted over four decades to two passions: an unwavering commitment to the practical communication and application of God's Word, and an untiring devotion to seeing lives transformed by God's grace. Chuck graduated magna cum laude from Dallas Theological Seminary and has since been honored with four doctorates. "Insights on Luke" is a Bible commentary. The author explained the meaning of various key Greek words and provided information on the cultural and historical background. There were also maps, photos, and charts to help illustrate what was going on. The author gave a paragraph or two of Scripture and then studied through that verse-by-verse. At the end of each section, he discussed how we can apply the writer's message to our own lives. He also included occasional "journal" pages were he talked about how those verses had been applied or worked out in his life.
Though you can look up information on just a single verse, this is more a Bible study book where it's assumed you'll read the whole book. Most of the text focused on clarifying what the verses mean so the reader can better understand them. Some parts were more of a sermon, where he tells the reader what to understand from it.
This book was easy to follow and understand. He brought out some interesting points about Jesus' trials. Overall, I'd recommend this book.
Charles Swindoll is a pastor, and as a result, he writes books so they can be enjoyed by both the scholar and the bricklayer. (A trait of a good pastor)
This book is a verse by verse study of Luke. It also explains and defines key Greek words, explains the historical background, (when needed) gives quick glimpses and profiles of men such as Pontius Pilate, and at the end of each short segment of scripture, gives a quick application to our daily lives.
If you are a Christian and wish to read an enjoyable commentary that will expand your understanding of the Gospel of Luke, I wholly recommend this book.
On a personal note. Reading this book as an expanded devotional (each segment is about 8-10 pages long) works quite well and doesn't take much time out of the day.
If you read this book and enjoy it, I would recommend reading Charles Swindoll's book on 'Acts' following this one.
This is the 5th commentary book, in the Living Insights series by Charles Swindoll, that I have read and the quality is still great. Swindoll shows his knowledge of scripture and cultural background with excellent commentary and application to modern day life. I highly recommend this series for anyone reading the New Testament.
I used this as a devotional for when I had more than just a few minutes to read in the morning. I really enjoy Chuck Swindoll’s books. Everything is easy to understand and interesting.
Another wonderful book in this Commentary series. I learned so very much, and cannot wait for my husband to be ready to finish Mark and be ready to move on to Luke.
