He needed someone to remember him when he was gone.

Instead, he found a woman he’d never forget.

Orphaned at birth and a loner all his life, the last thing Sergeant Klayne Campbell needs is for feisty Delaney Danvers to entangle his thoughts. Bravely volunteering for a top-secret mission almost certain to get him killed, Klayne can’t bear the thought of dying utterly alone. All he wants is to face death knowing his life meant something to at least one person. Offering Delaney a marriage of convenience, he plans to leave behind a war bride as his beneficiary. After just one night as her husband, Klayne realizes he’ll do anything to survive and return to her.

The moment she met handsome Sergeant Campbell at a holiday party, Delaney’s whole world shifted off kilter. Full of fun with an unquenchable zest for life, she isn’t afraid to go after what she wants. And what she wants is Klayne. When he prepares to join a hazardous mission, she seizes the opportunity to give him a reason to fight his way back home — to her heart.

A tender, sweet World War II romance rich with history and enduring love, Home of Her Heart captures the era and emotions prevalent during America in the early 1940s.

I can find no finer Book description than this so-appropriate Bible verse: “weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30.5) Not the author’s usual historical or contemporary Western romance, this is a story that illuminates both the heights and depths of human despair, grief, and ecstasy during times of war. This is the author’s second offering in her Hearts of War collection, the first being The Garden of Her Heart.

Sergeant Klayne Campbell and Delaney Danvers are thrown together at a New Year’s Eve party in 1941 following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The setting is Pendleton, Oregon, where Klayne is training for a top-secret dangerous mission at the airfield and Delaney is the daughter of a ranch owner outside of town.

A quiet, orphaned loner, Klayne has found purpose as a career military man and Delaney lies at the other end of the personality spectrum as a lively, charismatic and outspoken young woman. Their romantic intensity is almost immediate and ends in a hastily arranged war-time marriage.

For the sake of spoilers this reviewer will divulge no further details other than to extoll the virtues of this harrowing and gripping account of how the introduction of World War II accelerated and intensified all of the emotions everyone felt during that time of uncertainty. The author’s painstaking research on Klayne’s top secret mission is evident. Readers of the author’s Pendleton Petticoats series will be delighted to find several best-loved characters appearing in this epic account.

The chapters shuttle back and forth between Klayne’s and Delaney’s situations which heightens both interest and tension. The author achieves both a depth of emotion and drama unlike any of her previous works. I found this one of her finest works and now one of my all-time favorites. As a final compliment, what a fantastic movie this story would make!

AT THE END OF THE DAY, LOVE PREVAILS. REMEMBER THAT. LOVE IS THE KEY.

Whether you have read any of the Pendleton Petticoat series by Ms. Hatfield, or not, you will not be lost reading the Hearts of the War series that is a spin-off of characters from the Pendleton series. While people from previous stories are mentioned, and a very brief refresher on them and their connections and history without retelling their stories, you will see some of them in this story.

As with all of Ms. Hatfield’s books, this is a sweet, clean, and emotional romance, and this new series is based during World War II. One thing for sure, Ms. Hatfield writes a story with strong female characters, one with a backbone, grit, and integrity. The story has a great cast of characters, plenty of angst, emotion, and takes the reader back in time, and on a journey that will also bring parts of history to life

New Year’s Eve, 1941, just a couple weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, in Pendleton, Oregon, two people will meet and forever change their lives. For Sergeant Klayne Campbell, he will be dragged to a party, but stay hidden in the corner near a dying Christmas tree and fireplace people watching. For Delaney Danvers, she will reluctantly come to appease her best friend, Amy. Together, leaving the party and going to a local diner will allow these two time to talk and get to know each other. Can love happen at first sight?

Klayne has never known what family was like Having been abandoned at birth to an orphanage, and even shunned and treated poorly there; he has only had one friend his entire life, Billy. Together, they traveled the rails and countryside and eventually, joined the Army together. But now Billy is gone, killed in a training accident, and Klayne has volunteered for what has been deemed a suicide mission. Trained as a bombardier, all he knows is that his time in Pendleton is limited, and soon he will be shipping out.

Delaney Danvers isn’t considered a girly-girl, having worked just as hard as the men on their farm, and never one to date really, it comes as a shock to her that Klayne Campbell has turned her head. When he proposes to her his unorthodox plan to a marry of convenience so that if or when something happens to him, he can leave her with a small benefit, she will accept his offer of marriage, but not only in name.

The story is a very emotional roller coast ride of happiness, as well as heartache, of angst, anger, bitterness, disappointment, shocks, secrets, disillusion, forgiveness and new beginnings. Klayne’s good intentions leave Delaney feeling lost and confused, hiding their marriage, and a very unexpected surprise. Hearing newscast and seeing pictures in the paper and magazine shows him on a critical mission, but no word from him, and not able to get news from the military, leaving her in the dark.

Dealing with trouble on the farm, an injury to her father, and tragedy to their family will place the burden of the world on her shoulders. She can’t just curl up into herself; she must keep pushing forward for her family. No news is good news, but it leaves a young woman in limbo too. Having felt abandoned, seeing her soldier boy comes with such mixed emotions. “Klayne…Emotions swelled in her throat and obliterated her ability to speak. Anger, relief, elation, dismay, joy, and despair warred within her at the sight of him.”

Life will change, war has changed both of them and the family around them. Mixed emotions, along with feeling abandoned, leaves a war bride confused, and while thrilled to see her soldier alive, angry for months of silence and uncertainty. Can Klayne find forgiveness and happiness from the woman that gave him a reason to live? “Every inch forward he’d gain with his wife had been a battle of wills, determination, and just plain stubbornness.”

It's difficult to produce a blockbuster follow up to great event. We see it all the time in movies and probably don't really notice it as much in the books we read, especially when it's a favorite author but IMO, Ms Hatfield upped the ante with this 2nd book in her Hearts of War series.

I loved Delaney. She's feisty like me, lol. I adored Klayne. He's a good man with issues but that makes him more interesting. Ms. Hatfield's thorough research shines through her descriptions from the townspeople to the farm to what it was like to live in wartime that so effected this country. Her writing is emotional without weighing you down. She has just the right amount of humor, tension and heartfelt moments to keep you engaged and invested her her characters.

I love that she's chosen this time period to write a romance series and eagerly await her next work.

A wonderful story of wartime and love. This story pulls at the heartstrings and really draws on what people go through when a spouse goes off to war. I received a complimentary copy and I am reviewing voluntarily.

Oh my Shanna Hatfield has done the most remarkable thing in writing this story. Through a lot of research on the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in WWII, this second book in the WWII romance series, she had me on an emotional roller coaster ride through this story. I cried, I laughed, I smiled and I felt so scared and happy for the main characters.
Klayne is a bombardier on a B52 based for now in Pendleton, OR. He meets Delaney at a New Years Eve party he didn’t want to be at in the first place. When she arrives he is watching her from behind a Christmas tree and she saw him and strode right over to him.
They left the party to go for a walk and ended up at a diner and talked to start to get to know each other. Each felt something about the other and each wanted to know more.
Klayne knows he is being deployed soon and he knows he should not get involved with her but there is just something about this attractive young woman that he can’t stay away from. He sees her several times over the next couple of weeks. Then he finds they are leaving soon and he has volunteered for an assignment that probably no one would come back from. He has no one to leave his money too, not that he has much but no one that loves him or would miss him if he dies.

Boy this story is just another most wonderful story by Ms Hatfield and one I highly recommend everyone read. Anyone who is a history lover especially of this war has to read this, man or woman will find something in this story that is so incredible that you can’t put it down. I couldn’t. It drew my in from the very beginning and had me so involved in the story I couldn’t put it down. It is that good and now my favorite story of Ms Hatfield’s. She outdoes herself in every series that she writes. All I can say is WOW. This one will have you on the emotional roller coaster ride you have never been on before.
GET THIS BOOK.

I was offered this story as an advance copy by the author that hope for a review, I agreed to read this story but was not pressured to review nor did I receive any compensation for reading this. I wanted to review this story because it is one of the best stories I have ever read. This is my honest opinion.

Wartime Romance

This was a sweet whirlwind romance between Delaney and Klayne, two characters caught up in the apprehension and uncertainty of war. Their time together at the beginning of the romance was short, and they made a quick decision that probably would not have been made during times of peace and stability .

These two main characters were each dysfunctional in their own way, each letting their fears about their own imperfections, real and perceived, drive their decision making processes . It was interesting to see them work through these issues to strengthen their relationship, although at times I felt like throttling both of them. There was also a great cast of supporting characters that added depth and interest to the story .

Most of the story dealt with Delaney and her father working on the homefront dealing with the challenges of a wartime economy and labor shortages, and helping a child grieve the loss of parents do the war, while she waited for word of Klayne. The world war two action he was involved in centered around the bombing of Tokyo and other cities in Japan in the spring of 1942. The author shared the dangers and challenges experienced by those US Army air Corps be 25 crews who flew that mission. The author indicated in her afterword notes she spent a great deal of time researching that mission and what happened to the man who flew it. The details from her research came out in her writing . I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to those who enjoy clean, World War II romance.

Shanna Harfield has melted my heart yet again with her latest book “Home of her Heart”. This WWII romance story of Love, Loss, Duty and most of all Hope with fill you such warmth and admiration for the people of this time in our history. I have not read the other Hearts of the War book “Garden of her Heart” or all of the Pendleton Petticoats Book series where this current book is also set in. It is a completely stand-alone book but if you are a great fan and have read these series I am certain you will find characters you have met before. If you have not picked up one of Shanna Hatfield books before I believe this is the one to you must read.

I just loved this book it had me hooked I didn’t want to put it down even though I had to get up for work at 3 am the next day I pushed my bedtime limit to the max to get as much read as possible, then straight home to find out how it all ended. I received a free copy of the book and have voluntarily written an honest review. The strength of people during war time is very impressive to me, to live with the constant thought you might loose the one you love without ever seeing them again just brakes my heart. The characters in this book were strong, determined, heroes that put others before themselves.

Klayne and Delayney's story.

This one should come with a warning label to have a full box of tissues at hand. Shanna Hatfield has provided a well researched and detailed story created from sets of real events in WWII. The characters are so real and have such depth that you know they should be alive. Their backstory has the reader open their heart to this couple in a newly wartorn America. The secondary characters grab hold of your emotions as well. An emotional rollercoaster ride from beginning to end, tissues will frequently be needed. The war as not seen or felt from such intimate points of view brings the reader in close where there is no escape from the harsh and difficult reality of the suffering and struggles the American populace and soldiers went through. Patriotism kept the forward momentum going as loved ones are lost or injured. This love story is worth every tissue. Shanna did this one proud.

This is an incredible book!! It is set during World War II, and the bravery of the men, the strength of the women at home, the patriotic spirit, and the trials endured all came off the pages and into my heart. This is a story that will stay with me for a long time to come.

Before the end of the first chapter, I was in love with the main characters, rooting for them and wanting to know more about them. Delaney is sassy, independent, upbeat and has such strength within her. Klayne is humble, unassuming and so good-hearted. He has no experience with relationships of any kind, and sometimes he was so frustrating because of that, but he learned. He is so caring and has so much love to give. They both go through the whole gamut of emotions during the book, and I felt those emotions right along with them. That journey made a sweet, tender ending even better.

For those that have read the Pendleton Petticoat series, we get to see some of the characters from that series in their later years. Yay!! That was such a fun surprise!

Part of the book is based on the Doolittle Raid during World War II. Make sure you read the Author’s Notes at the end of the book to learn a little more about the raid, the men, and what happened to them.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I absolutely loved it!! A sweet WWII romance that is sure to tug at your heartstrings. It will take you through a rollercoaster of feelings, in a very good way. You will laugh, cry, and everything in between. It truly is a lovely story, rich with history. The characters are fantastic. They are strong, they have depth and they are witty. It was also fun to read about characters we've already met in other books.
The author does a fabulous job depicting the war, and the affects that it had on individuals and families. The things that were experienced in this story, the emotion, the characters, they all seem so very real. This is one book I'd love to own in paperback as well. It truly touched my heart. I know that I will love to go back and read it again. I instantly missed the characters when the book finished, and I hope to hear more from them in books to come!

Fly back in American History to World War II and that’s where you will find the spunky, feisty Delaney Danvers and soldier Klayne Campbell who all his life has only wanted to know he matters and loved by at least one person. Throw in the sweet little War orphaned youngster Ryatt and You have a Shanna Hatfield story so heart touching you will swear it just has to be true.
Laney and Klayne fall fast and hard in love with each other but most definitely not without adversities to overcome. This is a book that a person must read and savor for themselves to truly appreciate and admire Shanna Hatfield’s gift of weaving perfect soul engraving books.

What a heart wrenching book! Shanna Hatfield has always been a favorite of mine. This book has to be her best yet. That's saying a lot too. I cried so many tears. What I normally could have read in a day took me two days because I had to keep stopping to blow my nose or take a breather from being so involved in the story it literally took it out of me. My husband told me he didn't even need to ask if I was enjoying the book because he could tell by looking at me. The amount of research she did about World War II to make it real is evident in the final outcome. Revisiting characters from my past favorite books of hers was an unexpected bonus. I can't say enough good so just read it! You won't be sorry.

I don't often get to read stories from this era and thoroughly enjoyed this one. Very heartwarming and emotional. Delaney and Klayne have had such a whirlwind romance and then were separated for months. Months of not knowing whether Klayne was dead or alive. He had volunteered for a very dangerous mission during WWII and wasn't sure he would make it back. He needed someone who would miss him if he was gone. Delaney is that person. Delaney was left at home to pick up the pieces of everything else that happened in life. She lost so much is such a short span of time and she still waited for her husband to let her know if he was dead or alive. Good story.

If I could have given this story 10 stars I would have. I have always enjoyed Shanna Hatfield's stories but this one takes her work to a whole new level. Even the author notes were intriguing. As an Australian this was enlightening as well as a great read. The first book in this series was really good but this is better. I was honoured to receive an advance copy which I happily reviewed.

I would like to thank Author for giving me this copy of the book. This gift did not influence my opinion or review.

From the Author:

Home of Her Heart took me on an emotional journey. A big part of that came from the research I did for Klayne's character. In the story, Klayne volunteers for a secret mission, one he knows is so dangerous his superiors have assured him at least half the men going won't survive. The secret mission was inspired by the real-life mission of the Doolittle Raiders. The more I read about the 80 brave men who embarked on the mission to bomb Japan, the more involved I became in their stories. My husband assured me I'd gone far down the research hole when he found me teary-eyed in my office, pouring over accounts of the Doolittle Raid. My heart ached for these men who sacrificed so much, who volunteered with no idea if they'd ever return to their families and sweethearts. My hope is the emotion that drove me through the research carries through in the book and will provide an engaging story for readers. The greatest challenge I had in this story was bringing it to an end.

My Review:  Congratulations to Shanna Hatfield on her 50th book.  Wow!  And this one was a great book.  I really appreciate the research that went into it and enjoyed the references to songs and movies from that time period.  It was also fun having the cameo appearances of characters I had gotten to know in the Pendleton Petticoat series.

The author did a fantastic job of taking a very serious and heavy subject (war!) and creating a story filled with hope.

As a note, though there are some steamy kisses in the story (mostly at the beginning), the romance is clean and the relationship between Klayne and Delaney is not overly focused on the physical attraction.

I have read a couple of Shanna Hatfield's books before and wanted to try this new series. I liked Delaney and Klayne and the character development between them but this was not a fave of mine. I felt the story was drawn out and had too much detail that wasn't needed. I did love how both Klayne and Delaney did not give up when faced with their trials. I honestly don't know how I would have reacted. 3.5 Stars.

Shanna Hatfield is well known for writing sweet romance with characters the reader can easily embrace. She has done that once again with her novel HOME OF HER HEART, set during the time of WWII.

Sergeant Klayne Campbell grew up as an orphan, never feeling loved or able to love in return. Then one night, while lingering behind a Christmas tree in the corner, Delaney Danvers caught his eye... and soon his heart. By February the two were married, the day before Klayne left for a dangerous mission that took him to fly over Tokyo. After being severely injured in a plane crash, he fights his way back by holding on to his love for Delaney. All the while, Delaney has no idea if Klayne is dead or alive. All she knows is that he left her the day after their wedding night and has heard very little since then.

More tragedy hits the Danvers family that Delaney has to deal with alone. Although she still loves Klayne deeply, can she forgive him if he returns home?

This story was incredibly sad and although there were a few moments of smile-worthy pages, the majority of the book was just downright sad. Tears streamed down my cheeks on numerous occasions. During the months of waiting for Klayne to return, the story dragged a bit, and I felt the frustration that Delaney must have felt.

This is not my favorite of Shanna Hatfield's books, but it is certainly read-worthy, especially if you enjoy books in the time period of the 1940's. There were interesting time period references to things like chocolate chip cookies, food rationing, war bonds, homemade cloth diapers, music and Bob Hope movies.

5 stars are not nearly enough. This wonderful wartime romance reaches deeply into readers' hearts. This is Ms. Hatfield's 50th book which means once you finish you have many choices for what to read next. She puts so much research into each novel and writes so believably that we feel each character is a close friend.
During times of war emotions are raw and always close to the surface.
Klayne is not the type to believe in love at first sight. In fact, with his family history, or lack, he hasn't even been open to making friends. He believes it is best to stand on your own feet and take care of yourself.
Delaney is an independent spirit. She works side by side with her father in all aspects of ranch life. Her older brother made his own way, married and moved away. Dee is happy enough with her life. She didn't want to go to the holiday party that would change her life.

Strong, self reliant main characters forge this intense, deeply moving tale.
The unpredictability of this era looms large, casting shadows over the future and influencing choices that need to be made quickly. Making those choices fast does not mean they will be wrong. Nor does it mean the consequences will be fewer.
Settle in to escape to another place and time.

Home of Her Heart is second in the Hearts of the War series. I have not had the privilege of reading the first in the series but I plan on doing so. If you are familiar with the Pendleton Petticoat series of books this takes place in the same town but like 40 or more years later during World War II. Some of the same characters from that series make an appearance in this series. I think it is neat that you get to catch up with what they have done with their lives.

This is the story of Klayne Campbell and Delaney Danvers. They have an almost instant connection and fall quickly in love after only knowing each other a short time. They meet on New Years Eve and around the beginning of February they marry. Klayne wanted to marry so he could declare her as his beneficiary. I don't think he counted in falling madly in love with her so he did everything in his power to stay alive.

This was an enjoyable read. Keep your hankerchiefs handy. There are some sad moments in the book. You will laugh and you will cry. There are moments of heartache and of joy.

I am looking forward to reading more in this series. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me a digital copy of this book to read and review.

I received a copy from NetGalley; this is my honest review.
It starts light and fun, then the story is full of ups and downs. One chapter you're happy, the next one there's suspense, then the next one you really want to cry, then you're happy again. In between, you get the rest of any existing emotions possible.
It's a good thing the book is double POV otherwise we wouldn't know what was happening with one or the other and both are important since they're living in their own world for about 40% of the story.
I would have liked a bit more of their lives together, though.
The author is good at describing many things. Among other things, she sketches most people's facial expressions.
Funny moments: 1. The author tells us which toothpaste they are using or the cloth detergent's brand, details you will not usually see in a story but she really wants us to be in the era. 2. Delaney and Klayne got married, her carrying a bouquet of carnation; a superstition around red/white carnations is that they bring bad luck. Since it's the only flower I'm not allergic to, I married with them too and living the bliss (for both of us!) for over 25 years.
Good read. Don't miss out buying this one. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Each time I read one of Ms. Hatfield's books, I'm transported to another world. She has a unique way of putting the reader right in the middle of the story and wrenching up feelings. Home Of Her Heart is no exception. From the first paragraph I fell in love with Klayne, and when Delaney came on scene a few pages later, I loved her, too. Set during WWII, Ms. Hatfield keeps the reader in that era by sprinkling in movies and music, and with the mannerisms and speech of each character. Her descriptions of war scenes are vivid, as are scenes with Delaney struggling to get in a day's work. I'm not spoiling anything here concerning the plot. This is one book you Have to read and just let the emotions of the story and characters grab hold of you. Before you get to the end of the 1st chapter, Klayne and Delaney will have taken over your heartstrings and keep you turning the pages.

“In her arms, he’d finally discovered a place to belong, a place that was his and his alone. “
A wonderful sweet, emotional, historical romance. With inspiration from the real-life Doolittle Raiders, the history of WWII is woven throughout the story and comes to life. Shanna Hatfield consistency writes very strong female characters. While Sergeant Klayne did return a hero, Delaney really shows her strength as she faces numerous challenges on the ranch. Hatfield’s in depth research is blended so well in this book combining the history with romance, humor, emotions, and turmoil. I was engaged throughout the entire story and captivated by the characters, especially Delaney. I’m eagerly awaiting book 3 in the series, coming September 2018.

Sweet wartime romance!

Oh, how I loved this book! I'm sorry I hadn't read the first in the series, so now I need to!

I adored the first part of the book and the love at first sight between Klayne and Delaney! Soooo romantic ❤️❤️❤️
Klayne did irritate me mid-way through the book, with his refusal to write to Laney. I could get his viewpoint that he didn't want to add any burdens on her with his injuries, but seriously...to leave her wondering for so many months. What a cavedweller lol
Poor Delaney endured so much tragedy in those months! She is the epitome of a strong woman!

My husband and I had just seen the movie Midway at the show, before this quarantine started....so this story was extra moving for me.

Awesome story!!

Delaney and Klayne meet at a New Year's Eve party and the spark between is felt from the start. The romance between them is rushed because of Klayne's unexpected departure. Then the two both struggle through some hard times on their own before they are once again reunited. I enjoyed getting to know Klayne and Delaney throughout the story. Both were strong, valiant and caring characters. I was a bit frustrated from time to time with both characters stubbornness to completely trust the other person. The history in the book was interesting and gave more substance to the story.

Home of her heart

By shanna Hatfield

The book opens three weeks after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Klayne Campbell, our hero is a member of the 17th Bombardment group, Army Air Corps. Heroine, Dee a rodeo rider. Off to war, our hero is to depart but before he leaves. He marries the girl he just met Miss Dee aka Delaney Danvers. After a very sweet, short courtship. They get married. He goes off to war. The war part of the book is excellently researched. It is so amazing you actually can't put the book down. A really good read.

A book I want to read again, it brought back memories of what my mom told me about WWII (her brothers and brother in law served in the war, half in Europe and half in the Pacific front) and what an elderly friend shared with me, who was a prisoner of war in Japan. Yes, this book is romantic, and it has depth to it, painting a picture of people's lives and the impact that war brought, some of which was cruel and unnecessary. I recommend the books of the "Hearts of the War" series, and I hope for more, well done Shanna.

Heart Warming

This is the second book in the "Hearts of War" series. It fills us in on the family who live in Pendleton, Oregon. WWII is in full force and Klayne is getting ready to be shipped out. We are taken along as both Klayne and Delaine navigate through the days and months that they are apart.
This is a story that so closely follows the struggles of that time in history. I loved the characters and wish we could now follow Ryett's story as he grows into adulthood. (Hint, hint)

An Army officer falls in love with an Oregon farm girl.

Enjoyed being with this author again. Klayne and Delaney story was sweet mixed with heartache. A chance meeting at a party would change their lives forever. There short time together love blossomed. But the effects of war altered it for a time. Their loved returned when Klayne came back. During that time a little blessing had been forming. So happy that Ryatt had somebody to turn to in his heartache. So glad to see Kade, Ilsa, Tony and Nick in this story. Will read more by this author.
