What if a fascist, autocratic President took over the United States? And what if that President lost California, the sixth largest economy on Earth, by nearly 2-to-1... a margin of almost 3 1/2 million votes? What if the day after that President took power, the largest mass demonstration in history occurred, and the state with the largest turnout was California. And then, the following week, two of the largest international airports in the world, California's LAX and SFO, were blockaded by protesters? What if California refused to be ruled? From the creators of YOUNG TERRORISTS, Matteo Pizzolo (GODKILLER) and Amancay Nahuelpan (CLANDESTINO), comes this tale of resisting oppression, punching Nazis, protecting each other, kicking ass, and demanding liberty for all.

What if a fascist, autocratic President took over the United States? and what if California seceded from the United States as a sanctuary state?

CALEXIT imagines this scenario, (and a few others along the way) in this dystopian comic series by indie publishers Black Mask Studios.

It is a gritty series, but one that also has some hope - each issue includes 2-3 interviews at the end with activists, and organizers who are doing amazing work.

Another complicated-to-review #1 here. I don't have any real problems with the comic itself, but… it didn't make me glad to have read it. I don't feel like I enjoyed myself or learned anything. It was just a story, and it was more depressing than anything else, at least in this first issue. If I saw the trade in a library, I would probably borrow and read it, but some parts of it hit too close to home for reading in Trump's America. And maybe that's it: too much about today's world distracts me from the story that Calexit is telling. But I'm still not paying money to read the rest of it.

Talk about delusional first off California is the 7th largest economy not 6th and second it's heavily dependant on the other 49 for basic utilities like water. The amount of effort in realism is underwhelming to the point whomever likes this needs to get a life. We get it Californian elitists you don't make up the majority of America and your policies are unpopular l guess that's why you need this trash to comfort you. Hell I wish you'd leave the union no more multi trillion dollars bailouts every year to keep your gated communities afloat.

Calexit #1 is an outstanding opening chapter for this new series, with the creative team delivering a gritty narrative that feels refreshingly realistic. Throughout this we get some wonderful character building, as well as some exciting twists, giving us plenty of reasons to return for more. Lets just hope we don’t have to wait as long between issues as we have with Young Terrorists.

Always interesting to read a dystopian piece that takes place in alternate future that rings true for our present.
