Love in Hell Vol. 1

Rate this book
Rintaro Senkawa is a regular guy in his mid-20's who got a little drunk one night and fell to his death. But that is just the beginning of Rintaro's story, as he finds himself unexpectedly in Hell where he meets his guide, the painfully sexy devil Koyori. Can Rintaro take his situation seriously enough to repent for the sins of his former life, or is he fated to be eternally tempted, teased, and tortured by scantily-clad devils with iron spiked clubs?

Rintaro is a 20-something "regular guy" who drank too much one night, fell, hit head, and died. Convinced he'd done nothing wrong in his life and expecting to enter Heaven, Rintaro is unpleasantly shocked to wake up in hell instead under the watch of a young, meek, scantily clad demon named Koyori. Can Rintaro control his impulses, behave, and earn his way out of hell? Will he stop fooling around enough to even care?

At the core of Love in Hell is the concept that sinners can atone (as well as making their life more comfortable in hell) by suffering. Each soul is assigned to a caretaker demon who is responsible for their rehabilitating, primarily through helping them suffer, i.e. torturing them. The various horrible things they are subjected to are graphically depicted, and there is also a lot of nudity and ecchi situations. This is about as close as a manga can get to being hentai without crossing the line.

The key that makes this all work is that Love in Hell is a comedy. Everything is exaggerated and over-the-top to the point of ridiculousness, which takes a lot of the edge off. As with most comedies some of the jokes really click and some are too much/not funny, but I found more of it worked than didn't. The set up of hell and the way suffering is used both as currency and to judge progress towards redemption is clever and interesting. Rintaro is not an admirable lead, but at this point he shouldn't be or there's nothing to redeem. Koyori is naive but likable, and carries the reader's sympathies. There are a few intriguing dramatic and even romantic undertones hiding beneath all the the in-your-face humor.

The cover of Love in Hell and my description above should give ample warning of what you're in for here. If it doesn't seem like something you will like, you're almost certainly right. But I enjoyed this, absurdity and all. The premise and story have a lot of potential going forward.

Heckin' yikes. So this brings fanservice to a whole new level given that this is barely disguised porn. Its not even well written porn. I mean, if you like scantily clad monster girls writhing around, I'm sure you'll dig it but the characters are paper thin and there's really nothing here.

I had 3 volumes for this manga although a single combined volume is also available. The manga provides a Japanese staple known as "fan service;" Google it if the meaning is not obvious. The story is quite enjoyable -- I'd have been tempted to name it Love in Purgatory because that seems more apt. Unfortunately, I've not read Dante's Inferno, so I don't know how much was borrowed from that. The series is easy to read, tells a nice story and is satisfying. I recommend it!

Okay, so this was really gross and honestly the worse manga I've ever tried to read. returning immediately. not for me, and my husband hated it too and DNF'ed it as well. Warning: extreme gore and torture.

An interesting take on hell where pain is currency used to buy food, clothes ECT. The art is good and the paranormal romantic sub plot is kind of cute.

Hmm. Ok. Rintaro is really a bit of a douche.

I do like it when it gets all traditional horror though.

¡Menuda locura!

Nothing much to write home about. I don’t like either of the protagonists. The surprise transphobia wasn’t fun either.

You've been naughty. Welcome to Hell.

Upon acquiring this book from a friend of mine I noticed the above words on the back cover and wondered what I was getting myself into when I took it. It was not a straight up hentai manga as I had feared it would me. Mind you just because it does not show actual sexual encounters in the book it does show things such as groping and at least one part where the main character comes close to going all the way. This book is violent(after all it is set in hell) with limited nudity mixed with creative censoring and unique humor that evens the story out if you don't mind the concept of a story set in a place like hell.

My favorite part of the book is the explanation of how people are able to eventually be redeemed by suffering. In addition by suffering you can purchase things to make your life more comfortable in the short term so it is interesting to see how the various sinners differ greatly depending how much pain they can suffer through.

A fantastic start to a visually arresting world. Filled with startling imagery and uncanny humour.

It also has one of the most lovable and cute female protagonists in all of manga.

It is such a shame that this was cancelled after just three volumes. It could have been something. Especially considering how the last one ends. Would have liked to see the ending not rushed through, because it is actually quite good.

A new spin on Hell. This manga's only problem is that it is short (only 3). The story switches from funny to suddenly series, and keeps you guessing. Warning - it's a bit graphic... but then again, it is Hell. After only the first five pages I logged back onto Amazon and bought the rest of the series.
