Kalki had also the genius to classify the historical and non-historical events, historical and non-historical characters and how much the novel owes to history.

The first Tamil Novel which was serialised in a weekly - Ananda Vikatan and filmed simultaneously. The stills from the movie was printed at the apt places.
This is a story of an innocent Brahmin girl suffering in in laws place and ultimately became rich. Husband makes restoration of family rights and wants to live with her. To avoid that situation she became a freedom fighter and got jailed. The repented husband joined with her in freedom struggle and also in Jail.
The film was banned by British Govt. as it highlighted the freedom struggle.
The heroine's original name was Savithiri, which she changed to UMA Devi, when she became rich. Again this name inspired me to name my daughter.
There is a child character, daughter of the heroine, named Charu; it was portrayed by a child star named Baby Saroja.
Many girl children were named Saroja after the film was released.
This book is a must for all book lovers.

அமரர் கல்கிதான் இதை எழுதினாரான்னு கேக்கணும் போலேருக்கு. எனக்கு இதுதான் அவரோட மொதல் கதை. என்னப்பா அப்பனுக்கு பிள்ளை முகம் அப்பிடி மறந்து போயிடுமா? ஆனா ரெண்டு வருஷம் பழகின புருசனுக்கு கண்டதுமே ஞாபகம் வந்திடுதே...அதுதான் புரியவே இல்ல. ஆமா அதென்ன உமா "ஈரேழு பதினாறு வருஷம்" என்னு ஏதோ தப்புத்தப்பா கணக்கு சொல்றா...? அடேயப்பா இவ்வளவு தியாகம் பண்றவா பெத்த பிள்ளையை விட்டுட்டு இப்படி போவாகளா? என்னமோப்பா, ஏதோ ஒரு தமிழ் மசாலா படம் பார்த்தமாதிரி இருந்தீச்சு! அம்புட்டுதான் சொல்லுவேன், ஆமா!!

This is a very good writing from Kalki. Appreciate that Kalki had tried to give a good lesson to the community against caste-ism and the women's rights. I liked both Savithri and Sastri characters.
Sastri who was real Hindu-Brahmin against the caste-ism, very kind person, did his daily routine of a real Hindu and Savithri who was a good daughter to Sastri and became rich woman from her past pitiful life (abused by her step mother, abused by mother-in-law and got bad experience with her husband and her mother-in-law made her strongest woman). Finally she forgave her husband.
It was heart breaking when Savithri got pregnant, she was abandoned by her husband and in-laws and sent to her father's home alone, and when she went her village, father was not there (he went to get job in Chennai) and her step mother also was not there so she was seeking for her father with agony.
Very nice writing but little hurt because of some Tanglish (Tamil + English) words used while most of the words in the story were pure Tamil or words used by Brahmins.

கல்கி அவர்களின் மற்றதொரு அருமையான படைப்பு. கல்கியின் சமூக நாவலான ’அலை ஓசை’யை நான் படித்தபின்பு, அதைப் போன்ற மற்றொரு சமூக நாவலான ‘தியாக பூமி’ படிக்க எண்ணினேன்.
இதில், வரதட்சணை கொடுமை, தீண்டாமை, பெண்ணுரிமை போன்ற சமூக அவலங்களுக்கு எதிராக குரல் கொடுத்துள்ளார். சாவித்ரி எவ்வளவு கஷ்டபட்டாள் என்று படிக்கும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் வரதட்சணைக்கு எதிராக தங்களது கருத்தினை உறுதிப் படுத்திக் கொள்வார்கள். அந்த அளவிற்கு நமது மனம் பதறுகிறது. எவ்வாறு பல்வேறு பாத்திரங்களை, அங்கங்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்தி, கடைசியில் எவ்வாறு இணைக்கிறார் என்பது கல்கியின் நாவலாசிரியர் திறமைக்கு சான்று. ஸ்ரீதரன் எவ்வாறு மனைவியை துச்சமாக மதிக்கிறான் என்பதைக் காணும் போது, நமக்கு கண்கள் கலங்குகின்றன.
எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக இது கல்கியின் நாட்டுப்பற்றினை பறை சாற்றும் ஒரு நாவல். இதில், காந்திஜியின் சுதந்திர போராட்ட காலத்தினை நம் கண் முன்பு காட்டுகிறது.

பெண்விடுதலை !!
தியாக பூமி விடுதலைக்கு முன்பு பெண்களுக்கெதிரான அடுக்குமுறையை கட்டவிழ்கிறது சாதி வன்கொடுமையையும் படம்பிடித்து காட்டியுள்ளது !! இவ்வாறான பெண்களுக்கு எதிரான அநியாயம் அடக்குமுறை பல ஆண்டுகளைக் கடந்தும் இன்னும் இந்நாட்டில் நிலைத்த்திருப்பது கொடுமையிலும் கொடுமை காந்தி கண்ட கனவும் பாரதி நோக்கிய சமத்துவமமும் தற்போதும் கனவாகவே உள்ளது !! தற்பொழுதும் சாவித்திரியானவள் உமாராணியாக வாழ்ந்து கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள் பெண் விடுதலையை சமத்துவத்தை எதிர்நோக்கியே !!

One of the best novels of kalki. it is an intensive novel as it progresses. it is so intense that when it was made into a film the british banned its run after few weeks as the content kindled the people to protest against the colonial rule.

எளிய நடை ஒரு சாரார் சார்ந்த கதை களம்.
அங்கங்கே கதை முன்னும் பின்னுமாய் பயணிப்பதை சற்று குறைத்து இருக்கலாம். இந்த காலத்திற்கு இந்த கதை ஏற்பார் போல் இல்லை. முடிவுரை மனம் ஏற்கவில்லை. பெண்யியம் போராட்டம் பல தலைவர்கள் சார்ந்தது வெறும் காந்தியாரை மட்டும் குறிப்பிட்டது சற்று வருத்தம்.

Really enjoyed the novel! I felt like all the characters were talking in front of my eyes and I was traveling along with the characters to the places where they were at that time. Importance is given to every character. Speaking about Independence history and women rights is thought provoking.

A Poignant tale of a woman facing social issues in her life

What a wonderful book! An extra-ordinary writing and a lovely story . Brings before our eyes, the Society/Community of Brahmins, their culture, activities etc. The most humane character Saambu Sastri just captivates our mind. Very lovely social story by the great author Kalki. I am reminded of the olden days when this story used to be printed in the magazine Kalki with characters duly photographed,(as it appears in the movie Thyaga Bhoomi, wherein Papanaasam Sivan acted as Saambu Sastri, S.D.Subulakshi as Savithri and K.J.Mahedevan as Sreedharan) . I purchased a copy now, read the once again and enjoyed reading it.

Was expecting something great from the author based on the previous books that I read ... it was not that great ... story though had a good plot felt was not well handled ... didnt feel pity for the character or rage against the antagonist ... a very ok kind of a novel
