While the bombs rain overhead, Talcott Henderson and a group of fellow soldiers huddle in the cratered ground beneath the German front lines. Through the never-ending din of enemy fire, the voracious, blood-soaked machine of war haunts Talcott. Memories claw at him; kill or be killed, eat or be eaten. In the bowels of the earth a specter appears, and offers him an eternal life free of guilt.
Henderson, the main character, is just an ordinary man. He's flawed, but yet, a man who holds tremendous love in his heart. It's the only thing that keeps him moving forward - his beloved Isle. In a time a war, and as a soldier, he must deal with his endless guilt, missing his loved ones, and the place he calls home - the very thing he fights for. During such dire times, his guilt overrides his level head. Each passing day is a struggle to contain the 'darkness.' Until a stranger greets him and offers him the only solution he believes he has left. Will Henderson take what's offered? You'll have to read to find out.
A gripping tale, with words so elegantly placed, it will hold your attention from start to finish. This author has a certain way of writing her books - like a perfectly conducted masterpiece preformed by an astonishing orchestra. The elite of the elite. It's emotionally moving, flowed so eloquently, and each sentence painted such a picture, it's as if you stepped right into the book.
This is the second book I have read by this author. She has yet to disappoint me. Absolutely wonderful book.
Writing historical fiction in any form takes work. Writing historical fiction and incorporating the paranormal is even more work. Lucille Moncrief does a great job with her second volume in this story. Even though this is the second volume in the series, it reads as a stand alone. The entire Nefarious series explores human empathy and temptation. This volume shares the back story of one of the main characters during the Battle of the Somme during WWI. Talcott Henderson and his companions are stuck in a bunker during the heavy bombing of the battle, but they aren't the only ones. Moncrief's stream of conscious writing creates a vivid picture of how horrible war is on the people fighting. I felt like I was in the bunker next to these guys either playing cards with them or just observing as a fly on the wall. She did a good job weaving historical details throughout the story instead of relying on major info dumps. It was worth the read as it is short but packed with a lot of power and insight.
Yet again, this author blows my mind. I can not remember a writer that describes things in such a colorful, yet realistic manner. I could taste every cigarette, taste the dry biscuits, smell the chemicals of war, feel the character's guilt, and so much more. Set in a war, since passed, it gave an incredibly insightful look into life in the trenches. I couldn’t help but root for every member of their squad as they fought to subdue personal demons. From the first page, to the last, I was hooked. I give this volume a 5 out of 5 stars. How will the characters develop and what adventures will they find? I guess we will all have to read on and find out together.
This story a good for gaining background and insight into one of the characters from Nefarious 1. And while interesting, just did not grab me quite as much as the original. Definitely still worth the time to read it though and worth gaining knowledge about Talcott Henderson! On to Nefarious 3....
LUCILLE DOES IT AGAIN... I love her Nefarious storys and characters, they are toooo cooool.... These stories are timeless and should be kept in a capsule for all to read them... Enjoy, yet another version and cant wait for number 3 volume.....
