“Yes, I get angry. It’s something I do. But next time, I’ll let the nicer me come through,” the little boy acknowledges in Jennifer Waddle’s children’s book, I Get Angry When . . .
~ What ~ Part of the A Day in the Life of a Little Kid series, this oversized thirty-page paperback targets children ages two to six years old who enjoy a secular reminder of how to not be angry. After a dedication page, two lines of rhyming are on the left sides of the pages and full-sized, colorful illustrations are on the right. The ending has two coloring pages, tips for parents, and the author’s biography.
In this rhyming tale, a little boy explains that he gets angry for things his mother, father, brother, or dog do or when he has to do chores or accidentally hurts himself, but when he realizes that he can control his emotions and responses, does he consider having a different attitude.
~ Why ~ Children today often need help understanding their emotions, including being angry. I liked that this story shows how one should admit anger can control them, but by reflecting on understanding how they feel and can change, the anger can be lessened. Adding the two black and white pages to color and the five tips were helpful. I appreciate the chart with eight tips and mention of God.
~ Why Not ~ Some readers may not like some of the mean facial expressions. Beginner readers may be frustrated with the two- and three-syllable words. Due to the simplistic artwork, there may be not enough visual stimulation for older children.
~ Wish I wish the story included how praying to God can ease anger. The coloring pages could have better-delineated lines.
~ Want ~ If your child is at the stage of learning about emotions and how to deal with them, this one on softening anger by tampering down out-of-control feelings will help them cope.
Thanks to the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
Review Title: Children & Anger Options (review of I Get Angry When... by Jennifer Waddle) Reviewer: Janice S. Garey ***** 5 Stars
I highly recommend this picture book for younger children learning about their feelings and their options in responses.
This book has great illustrations to go with the nicely rhymed words and important thoughts. I think all parents will appreciate the message of this book along with its age appropriate and engaging illustrations.
Along with the book, you also receive reproducible coloring pages to use as a reinforcement activity. I believe some of the scenarios in the book could be acted out by children to get even more personal experience with their options when angry. A chart to record emotions comes with the book so children can be aware of their progress.
I received an e-copy of this author's book from her to read and post my honest review. I was given no compensation for my reading and review.
As a former preschool teacher, with experience in reading to groups of young children, this book would be perfect to read in that setting or at home during the day. It's probably not the best bedtime book with anger as its subject.
This is the kind of book that parents and teachers will want to read again and again to reinforce the message and give many opportunities for discussion as children go through stages of emotional development.
