The superstar BATMAN team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo reunite for a massive, universe-spanning event! DARK THE FORGE and THE CASTING hinted at dark corners of reality that have never been seen till now! Now, as DARK METAL begins, the Dark Multiverse is revealed in all its devastating danger-and the threats it contains are coming for the DC Universe! DARK METAL is a DC event unlike any other one that will push Batman, Superman and heroes of the Justice League beyond their limits to take on threats unlike any our world has ever seen! It will take the combined might of the World's Greatest Heroes as you've never seen them before to face what's coming their way!
Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
Choo-choo, all aboard the stupid train to HotMessville! Celebrated New 52 Batman creative team Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo – or “Doom Commander” and “Pain Bringer” as they’ve bizarrely nicknamed themselves here like a pair of spergy ‘tards! - reunite for the sprawling event, Dark Nights: Metal. Unfortunately the low quality that plagued the tail end of their New 52 run hasn’t improved – Dark Nights: Metal #1 is rubbish!
Maybe it’s my fault for not reading the two issues preceding this (The Forge and The Casting) but, dagnamit, the cover says #1 so this should be a logical jumping-on point! I couldn’t follow what the hell that opening scene was though. The Justice League are gladiators in some space arena lorded over by Mongul. Toyman is his prisoner for some reason. Robots fight the JL, then they’re being controlled by the JL before combining into a Power Rangers-esque Megazord. Wha…? I think this comic is Snyder coming out as a huge Michael Bay fan – it reads at that level of intelligence.
Then the free-for-all of nonsense comes thick - and this comic is definitely thick - and fast. A mountain appears out of nowhere in Gotham. As they do. Now here’s a map of the Multiverse! Here’s Neil Gaiman’s Sandman! And did someone say Hawkman? (NO! No-one ever wants to read about Hawkman - stop trying to make him a thing! Don’t bring him back to life!) There’s no story, just a series of confusing, incoherent and unconnected scenes. And the thing is, despite all these references and allusions to complex storytelling, it looks overall like such a generic storyline boiling down simply to superheroes vs. supervillains.
I like Doom Commander’s ambitious storytelling - even some of the silliness, despite being utterly confusing - and Pain Bringer’s art is as awesome to see as ever. Despite this messy first issue, there are plenty more to go so that it could turn out to be awesome, or at least contain some crazy cool moments to make it worth reading. But I definitely wasn’t impressed with Dark Nights: Metal #1 and can easily wait for the collected edition to eventually rock up to find out. Like Michael Bay’s movies, this comic was overstuffed with flashy dumbness, little substance and superficial fan service.
It’s getting harder and harder to remember what a good Scott Snyder comic looked like…
Now THIS is how you start an epic event. Scott Snyder teams up again with Greg Capullo (rock on!) and the old N52 Batman gang to deliver this Bat-centric event that may not just span throughout DC's rich history but also across the publisher's other imprints too. Dark Nights: Metal #1 is a solid triumph of deep, well-researched storytelling and fast-paced heavy metal action.
Here's Snyder at his best. This guy never settles for the mediocre. In this issue, Snyder has seamlessly incorporated his trademark "nice to know trivia" narration and horror elements to craft a unique crossover series. Whereas Geoff Johns has a vision of grandiosity and epicness, Snyder's style is more grounded and brutal.
There's no other perfect artist right now who can accurately put into illustration Snyder's vision than Greg Capullo. This guy is a beast. Each page of Metal #1 is a visual spectacle. The art in this issue demands a second and third look. It's just that great.
This midnight release cover is just f*cking cool.
To give a peek about what this event is, it's a fine mash-up of three things: 1. Batman's POV about his search for the Nth metal, 2. Hawkman's storyline that is also about that metal, and at the same time our guide in DC's history, and 3. the existence of a vast Dark Multiverse. It's a meta-story, a celebration of history, satisfying action and literally new worlds for DC. That is how vast Dark Nights: Metal is covering.
Read as part of the Dark Nights: Metal graphic novel.
Snyder turned the Lord of Dream into a Watcher-like figure, a character that keeps on saying it can't interfere but gives the heroes aid to their mission.
I'll admit up front that I failed to catch all the references, dialogue and imagery.
But I do so like this art and the story has a bit of an epic feel to it. Were I forced to guess, I'm going to enjoy this story more than most long-time readers because I don't have a varied history with this kind of game-changing stories and events. Having taken a long break from comics I missed a lot of the crisis events and reboots/relaunches as they printed. As a result, I read them all as historical tales and not current events.
I'm up for this one. It could be interesting. But, maybe lay off the Batman-heavy events after this? He's been a street-level hero for a long time and I feel like maybe DC is embarrassed of that fact and is trying to make up for it by giving him cosmic connections.
Either way, I'm up for issue #2. Bring it on.
EDIT: On second viewing...I mostly agree with the above. And I'm really hoping I can make it further in this event without giving up this time.
I don't' envy Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. Their run on Batman is one of the only universally loved titles of recent times. Even books I thought were pretty good had plenty of detractors (Tom King's Batman, Bendis Invincible Iron Man, even Mark Waid's Daredevil has made a good reputation, but I remember everyone hating it at the time).
I probably should share my biases. I have increasingly become frustrated with DC. A lot of their recent "events" just have not clicked with me. I have to admit, I am not really an 'event' guy.
This one is pretty promising though, and the hype on it is off the charts.
Anyway, I'm probably going to fall in the minority on this one.
I am not sure how to rank it because there is a lot I like about it. I like a lot of the plot points, and I like this version of the Justice league. Even when it goes for "big fun" moments like the Justice League Voltron thing is pretty cool in my eyes.
That said, the book is guilty of that thing that happens in Morrison's worst moments- it gets convoluted trying to cram in too many things, and packing in cryptic lines and obscure references. Outside of the most hardcore Dc fans, I can imagine most readers just throwing this down midway through.
It only serves to reinforce my DC biases. This one actually is probably going to be a halfway decent book. However with so many 'events', it feels largely unnecessary, and hardly to appeal to anyone who isn't going to normally pick it up. Yet, credit to Snyder to give just enough nuggets that I wouldn't normally be interested in continuing, but I might just keep slogging through this.
Amazing start. I feel like this is going to be an epic event. Can't wait to read all the tie-ins and hopefully these bat clan knights will be as creepy/scary as their intro drawings! 😍😍😍
Don't know where that beginning come from though? :/ Looks almost like I missed a chapter or something.. Or was that the meaning? Does anybody know?
But the further we get in the story, the more excited I get... WWBD.. what will Batman do ;) And who is Dream? :D another character I'm supposed to know.. Damn, missed too much apparently..
The Justice League. Dark multiverse. A mystery spanning Snyders whole Batman run. Freaking Dream of the Endless--a Neil Gaiman character I didn't know was allowed to be used by other authors! What the hell more do you need?
At the beginning of this issue: it gives so many details that we don’t know where they came from. So they are useless.
This issue gives so many details that we don’t know anything about them and when they talked about the alternate universes...that’s when the writing goes down! If you want to make a good comic book, don’t use the same characters in the usual world. Just make new characters in another world with reasonable details. Just adding new details to a same real world we live in is too much and unforgivable. And they don’t talk specifically about the metal, it’s like the writer doesn’t have any opinion on how much big the story should be or doesn’t know how long this series should keep going.
This was a very well put story. I was very pulled in by the comic and can't wait to get the next volume. I think this is the beginning to a awesome story arc. I highly suggest this to all Batman and DC fans!
I love any kind of story that features all my fav DC people! Written well but the art could have been a bit brighter, especially because it features my Flash!
Oh man, this is going to be a super good series. Maybe one of the best epic comic stories ever! I really did not want to get caught up in this event. I even missed Dark Nights: The Casting and this issue, when they came out in the comic shops. But I caught up via my Kindle app on my Samsung tablet. I am probably in for the whole darn epic! I keep telling you all, this has a whole first appearance of Galactus type feel to it.
So with "Metal" in the title, I thought it meant something heavy and, well, metal. But it's actually in reference to a magical metal. I get Batman's part of the same universe as all the DC superheroes with superpowers, but does he really have to be? I mean, he's being sought after by ancient gods and dark matter multiverse evil, fighting on different planets in Voltron-like style, riding dinosaurs... Batman is supposed to be dark and twisted, and fights street and organized crime. Putting him in a sci-fi/fantasy, Stephen King-esque story is just ridiculous. I wanted to read this series because I was interested in the new Batman Who Laughs character and wanted to have some context before reading the stand alone about him, but I think I'm gonna skip it and just read the stand alone.
