3.5 Cause that final sentence left me with the biggest smile!

Not a bad read overall but it did frustrate me at times. I feel like in terms of Lucy's love life each book takes one step forward but then the next one starts two steps back, which usually both confuses and irritates me.

I'm still interested to see where the overarching story goes and I'm also very much looking forward to the development of a certain relationship...

Author Anita Oh has been really good about getting the books in this series out quickly. As an author of my own trilogy (with the third part yet come), I am both impressed by her work ethic and jealous of her prolific nature. Though the gap between this fifth book in the series and its predecessor was longer than gaps between other books in the series, it wasn’t a problem at all to get back into the magical and snarky world of narrator Lucy O’Connor.

Let’s start with a brief recap of the series so far. Lucy attends the secluded, exclusive, possibly magical Amaris High. During her freshman year, the school fell under The Truth Spell, she was shrunk by The Tiny Curse, and she and rich, aloof Tennyson Wilde experienced The Body Swap. Residual effects between them lingered into sophomore year as they felt The Soul Bond. And this book picks up where that one left off.

While I try to keep my reviews spoiler-free, that’s hard to do when reviewing later books in a series. I kinda have to reveal some things from the previous books. You’ve been warned.

Here we have Lucy trying to learn how to be part of a werewolf pack with Tennyson, his sister Althea, their friend Nikolai, and Lucy’s childhood friend Sam. As a pack, they can sense each other’s presence in an instinctual manner. But Lucy also has a telepathic connection with Tennyson thanks to their bonding in the previous book, even though Lucy will eventually transform from a lycanthrope into…something else that we don’t know yet. Meanwhile, Lucy’s former roommate Hannah is still missing, and her new roommate Katie seems to have much information about everything going on, but she can(’t) be trusted. That’s because Lucy’s father is part of the bad-guy organization out to do…something. Oh, and there’s this other girl Olivia, who’s jealous of Lucy and mean to her because Lucy’s obviously stalking Tennyson.

But Lucy isn’t in love with Tennyson. Sure, they have that whole bond thing, but she loves Sam. As a YA love triangle trope, this one is played out well because it’s not like she’s waffling between the two of them. Her relationship with Tennyson is obviously complicated because of the swap then the bond, but in its paranormal way, it’s believable as a deep friendship developed between people who have shared a trauma. In exact opposition, her relationship with Sam is usually simple because it goes back to their childhood. I like this juxtaposition, and thus, I like the triangle.

Then the titular love potion throws an unexpected wrench in the gear shaft. I won’t spoil the details except to say that Lucy is the unwilling recipient of the potion, and the recipient of her undying love really complicates matters. However, I’m torn on how this particular plot device works.

On the good side, I liked the interplay between Lucy and the object of her affection. I liked how it interfered with her relationship with at least one other character. And I really liked how different Oh’s version of a love potion was than the expected—it wasn’t instant, it wasn’t over the top. Instead, it’s a slow internal build that really wreaks havoc on Lucy’s ability to think clearly. The narration at these times, especially when she was close to him, was extremely well done.

But it took a good chunk of the first half of the book (about 40%, according to my Kindle) for the love potion to finally appear. The fifth book in a series shouldn’t need that much setup to get to the initial incident. Sure, there are important things happening before then, but Lucy being affected by the potion is what starts the rest of the plot rolling. Also, I wasn’t quite sold on the motivation of the character who used the love potion, making me question why Lucy had to remain affected as long as she did instead of it being to complicate the main plot.

And it does complicate the plot, which was fine. There’s intrigue, suspense, and action in the nefarious plans of Lucy’s nefarious father. Katie’s role as potential informant—without us knowing her true loyalties—was also handled well. So this was an enjoyable installment in the series, and I look forward to the next part because the endgame isn’t yet clear.

So like previous parts, the characters and their relationships are the strengths of the book. Some of the plot beats and the climax work well, but other parts would require some more of the potion to make me love them. That being said, I give The Love Potion THREE AND A HALF STARS.

I was a bit disappointed at the beginning of book 5. After finally sealing the bond and all the intensity, deep soul insight, even I knew that Tennyson is a Golden Boy outside and inside. Why is Lucy back to her resentment to Tennyson then? Why is he blocking the bond? It didn't feel right and I was a bit frustrated.
Nevertheless, the story worked for me. I quite liked it that this time there was time to discover all the tangled feelings (not so much that Lucy acted like a jerk) and there was a lot of suspense going on. Who is behind the love portion? What is Katie's, the new roommate's, game? Can we trust the headmistress? And again, and insane father and betrayal from the inside!
All in all, I think the events around the love – square! - are necessary to understand the bond between Lucy and Tennyson and help them to another level. Could it be anything else than love??

I just wished these books would be cheaper or longer, definitely longer.... or less addicitive.... and all written already so I don't have to wait for the next (6) to come out....

I really enjoyed reading this book. Lucy overhears a conversation among her classmates, and lunges in to rescue Tennyson. When she wakes to discover it has erased her bond with Tennyson...she turns to pack members and tries to figure a way out of the state she finds herself in now.

She discovers that she has feelings she can't fight for another pack member...and things have never been more confusing. This book is ideal for YA readers that enjoy reading about the lighter side of the Paranormal fiction world, and any werewolf fans are welcome to give it a try as well. I'm really enjoying this series so far.

i really like these books! even though there are three books in each year, each book is actually a story in itself. the main characters are well developed and very different from each other. the main character is hilariously sarcastic and has a great sense of self. she finds humor in her worst situations and always finds a reason to keep going. a great example for teens.
really enjoyable series!

some swearing but her most used derogatory word is jerk often with some great adjective added to it.

Still good but it felt like we took two steps back in terms of Lucy & Tenneysons relationship where they are back to constantly arguing and not supporting one another. Also I found the reason behind the love potion and the person responsible completely unbelievable. And I realy don’t understand Lucy’s obsession with finding Hannah seeing how much of a evil bitch she was to Lucy with no reason in the first 3 books.

I have been given this book free in exchange for an honest review.

After reading the first four books in this series I thought I knew the direction it would be heading. I was very pleasantly surprised to see how it unfolded. It was definitely the funniest in the series in my opinion and I was laughing out loud at some points.

Exciting, twists and turns. Betrayal and misguided shenanigans leads Lucy on another adventurous semester. All the werewolves are involved. A new roommate can Lucy figure out to be suspicious or does she leap right in as always. Evil fathers and his followers. Secrets revealed. Deep breath and open the next semester of the gang and all the trouble the teens get into.

The more I read of these quick teen paranormal novels the more addicted I have become. Anita Oh gently hooks the reader into the world and so subtly and slowly offers the intrigue and hints of romance the reader wants that you fee like you Must read the next one to see how it all plays out.

Still a quick entertaining read but I really didn’t like the fact that we are back to square one with all the relationships at the beginning of this one.

I’ve honestly enjoyed this series so far and I’m excited for the rest of the books. However I’m sad to say I set this book down at 29% and didn’t pick it up until eight days later and it was a little difficult to get back into it because I forgot what already happened in the beginning of the book. I just couldn’t even believe how easy it was for me to forget and honestly right now as I’m writing this review, I can’t really recall much that happened. I do remember key/exciting parts of the story but it isn’t as strong as I wish it would be in my mind.

Other than that I enjoyed this, not quite as much as the others but we did get to learn more about the school and it was interesting to watch Lucy try to get control over being a new werewolf. She was definitely a badass at the end of the book and it was funny watching her being in love with someone she never had any interest in in the first place. Moments where my heart broke when she and Tennyson could no longer feel their soul bond and them finding out the truth behind who put the love potion on Lucy by accident. This was another quick, fun read in the Werewolf High series and I’m still excited to continue the series even though I didn’t like this one as much as the others.
