Eye of the Tiger: A Paranormal Space Opera Adventure (Star Justice Book 1) by Michael-Scott Earle is a super awesome sci-fi novel that had me glued to my tablet! Wow, right from the get-go it has genetically altered soldiers, a genetically altered woman, battle scenes with blow by blow action without blogging the scene down, and an unknown adventure. It is a fast pasted, adrenaline rush story that goes from motorcycle chases, hacking, shoot outs, shape shifting due to the genetic enhancements, drone operating shoot outs and hijacking, and spacecraft theft, what fun! It is one wild ride so hold on!

Weretiger...in space. . So this isn't really ^science^ fiction, except that they have space ships and plasma weapons and lasers. The vampire is less of an issue, as she is simply an enhanced human type. Gaining mass and size violates some physical laws, which is well within SF, but usually requires explainable tech. And nothing gets explained.
And that is the problem. Stuff just works. Shotguns slugs penetrate several bodies and body armor with ease. The weretiger gets big and furry without needing to eat until he shifts back. He heals from severe wounds, changes back to human form, and passes out, only waking to eat a day later. What is his energy source?!?!?
Even the evil corporation trope is hackneyed and weak. Motivations aren't explained, simply assumed. Senior people are evil because...megacorp...and evil.

truly dreadful
clumsy writing, no fleshed out characters, plot=one chase scene after another, almost no world building.
Examples of prose:
"The men pivoted in their chairs as I fired, but my bullets tore through their unarmored bodies as if they were made of warm gelatin. The next opened van also held a pair of pilots inside. They were a little more prepared than the men I had just killed, and they were both reaching for their sidearms. Neither of them were able to draw their weapons before my bullets reduced their lives to red splats across the display monitors."
[Eve (heroine vampire) talking to Adam (hero weretiger)] "They will not capture us. Death will take us first. It would be our last freedom, and while I would choose life for obvious reasons, dying by your side would bring me peace in the afterlife. “Confirmed,”I said to her."
"Z and I were silent for a moment as we pondered the words Eve just spoke.
hero is totally wooden, while author continually describes Eve as 'the beautiful woman' or 'the dark beauty', and fails to give her any personality beyond "there's a lot of evil out there and we need to save people from it." Other woman started off with somewhat of a character, but then devolved into sidekick with crush on hero (and maybe also on heroine).
Majorly awful.

Really wanted to enjoy the book. the premise had me at hello. Soldiers turning into tiger beasts with weapons? I am soo there. I eagerly devoured the book and certain things gave me pause.
First the pacing. The action was great. Author does action very well. I am a big fan of his ass kickery.
It just seemed a bit disjointed. The characters go from cursory meeting to lifetime buddies too quickly.
Got to the point that It started to feel improbable to me. I mean, how can that be. the guy is a half man half tiger and now I got issues with the story?
It seemed a bit ham fisted and clumsy. I love the concept but I think we go full throttle into action without explaining the motivations properly.
i really wanted to like this book.

When I first looked at the cover, I immediately thought "Man-Kzin Wars" Which I enjoyed immensely 40 years ago or so, and have just recently started rereading. I was glad this wasnt a redo. I really like how Mr Earle writes. Graphic, down to earth, straight forward and I cant wait for the next. Yes, it has adult language, and I am damn glad of it. Keep 'em comin and screw political correctness and lets have some FUN!!!!

I bought the entire series because of this book. This is space opera at it's best. I'm totally enthralled with K, Adam and Eve. I just finished this and I'm already looking forward to what's about to happen next.
Long story short. Man ex Marine ex Yakuza current test subject saves a vampire and gets into a lot of gun fights trying to get off the planet. Along the way they pick up K and there are more gun fights. After that they try and steal a spaceship. more gun fights.
I'm grossly over simplifying this, but the fact is this. There is a LOT of action, there is chemistry between the characters, K is goddamn hilarious and Adam is just plan awesome. I would LOVE for this to become a TV show or even a movie, but I don't think they'd be able to get the characters right. And when I say chemistry, I'm not saying this is a space orgy, like these feel like actual people. The world building is also suburb and it feels like the dystopian future I can see. If you liked stuff like Blade Runner, V for Vendetta, or The Matrix, you're going to like this.

I was lucky enough to be the beta-editor for this new series and I wasn't disappointed with it at all! It starts with a bang and never lets up! The story is about an ex-marine fighter who is now serving time in prison. As part of that punishment he is turned over to a scientist who decides to create a group of were-tiger warriors who are controlled by a collar. During an assignment to break a woman being held captive, Adam's collar is broken and suddenly he's free! He manages to free the woman, who he discovers has some unique abilities of her own. She is also be held captive against her will. Between the 2 of them they go on the run. Along the way, they pick up a hacker and between all three of them, they manage to steal an experimental space ship. Now all they have to do is figure out what and how to use their ship and maybe recruit a few more team members to help them with the ship and their survival.

This is not Good. It's very simplistic, with fairly flimsy characters. But it still entertained me; I was looking for a "popcorn action flick" and this fit. In addition I enjoyed the audiobook's narrator, who put real effort into new alien accents and Adam's growling words when in tiger form, as well as Z's "fast southern" was appealing.

Having read several other book by this author, I saw the description of this one and thought is sounded very intriguing. The idea of a crossover of paranormal and sci-fi has always fascinated me, and this author's really strong character creations seemed like a perfect fit for this kind of genre hybrid. I'm happy to say I was right, it is a great fit.
In a far future where mankind has spread across the universe, Adam is a former prisoner who has been transformed through secret therapy to be able to transform into a tiger man for a certain amount of time, with enhanced, strength, speed, senses and durability. This therapy has been accompanied by heavy duty space marine training, as well as an explosive collar around his neck to keep him under control. He is part of a team of, for lack of a better term, Weretigers, and he has survived longer than any of the others.
On a mission to retrieve a mysterious article from a corporation on a distant world, The mission goes from smooth to pear shaped quickly. As they get closer to the package, Adam starts hearing a voice in his head as he moves ahead of the rest of the team, telling him to come to where the objective is. As he kills his way to the target, he discovers a shock: the package is a woman named Eve being kept in some kind of stasis. Breaking her out of the machine she is kept in, she removes his control collar without it exploding, and tells him they need to escape. Since he is now free, and being no fan of his employer, he agrees is they can figure out how to get out. He also discovers that Eve is both a psychic and a vampire, and she has been kept weakened by lack of blood.
This starts a wild escape, where they must get passed his teammates to start being able escape a ridiculously secured building, getting past drones, robotic canons, a large security force, as well as a corporate apparatus that will be on their tail if they do escape. They will later meet a smart mouth female hacker named Z who will provide them with documents to help escape, and when that goes pear shaped, she must go on the run with Adam and Eve to try and escape the planet and the hugely powerful conglomerate chasing them. Eve 's psychic ability leads them to an experimental ship they can escape on, although clearing their way past the huge security force and weapons emplacements is a wild fight, and is framed in a great, intensive series of scenes. It is intimated that their escaping the planet would force a dramatic shift in galactic politics, since corporations control so much of the power, although just how much should be interesting to discover as Adam, Eve and Z learn to coordinate their abilities to the fullest.
As with his other books, characters are a great strength in this book. Adam and Eve are both powerful in their own rights, but show surprising vulnerability. Z is a fun foil for them, being the one that's not built for combat, so to speak, and is the one looking for a place to hide while Adam and Eve sort out the rough stuff. She is brilliant in her element though, and surprises you with her ingenuity and secret courage. The villains are a bit generic, since there is no one figure to really get to hate, other than a short scene with the control head for Adams marine team, just corporate minions and security. I do expect that to change in later books, although a monolithic corporate villain may be the direction it takes, which would also work.
The setting has a very far future sci-fi feel to it. Vast interstellar distances, Cities that seem like a cross between Blade Runner and Minority Report, just straight sci fi cities overrun with corporate influence. The ships seem cool, and the other trappings, such as the robotic weapons platforms, the drones, the auto driving cars, the bio-engineered soldiers, they all fit with sense of a far flung galactic civilization. The crossover with the psychic/paranormal and the sci-fi is handled seamlessly, and is very enjoyable. All told, it really helps draw you in to the story.
The narration by Eric Bryan Moore is spot on. He gives each character their own unique voice, and helps make you really get into each of them. His narrative pacing is solid, never lagging or falling into a monotone. He definitely brings solid work to the narration.
Overall, this book should appeal to a wide range of readers/listeners. It has elements of military sci-fi, urban fantasy, vampire and were fantasy and even techno thrillers. It has strong female characters that are strong in their own right, not just because the males are weak. I can highly recommend this book.

OK, but something felt missing....
Mix SF with Fantasy elements and poor an Space-opera sauce over it and you have the basic elements for Eye of the Tiger. Adam the Tiger if the title is an genetically-engeneerd Were-tiger supersoldier who manages to free himself from his captors/ torturers/ the people who turned him into a monster, with the help of a beautiful woman kept in seemingly similar circumstances. Now they have to escape together.
A familiar story, with a new twist and an overall good story, but.... Well something just didn't click for me. Something felt missing, and I'm honestly not sure what exactly that is. Somehow the story felt rushed and rough at places. Overall I enjoyed this novel, but it left me with a weird "missing something" taste in my mouth that demised the overall effect.

This is my third book my Michael-Scott Earle and my first Space Opera. So what’s this book about? Warning, contains some spoilers.
**************************
Eye of the Tiger is the first book of his Star Justice series. Adam has been experimented on by the bad guys (Elaka Nota Corp), which makes him able to shift into a tiger. He has a military background, which plays a large role with his character. The majority of the book is spent with Adam escaping then running from the bad guys. During this time he meets two women; Eve, a vampire, and Z, a brilliant hacker. All three, with the help of each other, are trying to stay alive and away from the bad guys. There is so much action, character development lacks a bit, but hopefully it will expand in the future.
I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect with a space opera, other than space. It’s told from a male perspective. Also note this book is not for children- there is a lot of violence, sexual situations (more along the lines Adam has noticed Eve’s breasts or butt in this book), and per the author himself, it is a harem book (1 man/2 women). If you are not comfortable with these things, this book is not for you.
This series has the ability to go down a great path, and I’m assuming it does since there are now eight books in the series.
Over all, it was a good book. It sets the stage for the future books and I look forward to the next one and how the characters develop. Would recommend if you’re looking for fast-paced action or are a fan of harem/space set novels.
*Note: if you are interested in a book my Michael-Scott Earle that has a female viewpoint, I’d highly recommend Wings of Justice (City of Light book 1). This book is one of my favorites and highly underrated.

The review is about whole series.
First thing I need to say about novel is that author knows shit about space and tech. Space battles are incredibly stupid with sinking ships and implosions from "pressure" in space.
The next is tech, and it is moronic. The NAV systems need manual imputs and there are no weapon auto targeting systems, when some "genius" from slums can construct self-aware Androids from garbage. No one has ever heard about point defenses, because who needs point defenses when everyone with rocket launcher can shoot a space ship from the sky.
The paranormal part is kinda alright, but in sci-fi setting, the powers need more logical reasons behind them. Like the Were-tiger transformation is a genetic mutation. Where does the extra mass come from? Where does the energy needed for powering healing, growing extra 100 kg of muscle mass and to power them come from? An ESPer with mind powers again genetically modified to be a vampire. Why does drinking blood improve her power?
And lastly about action and characters. The shootouts are great, but characters are one-dimensional. Main character is angry almost perpetually and his answer to all problems is to punch it in face. Then there is panicky super Hacka. And cool beauty vampire. Well it would be alright, but their dialogues are all corny and moronic, like "We will die before they take us alive". Main characters know each-other for like 5 minutes and are already BFFs. I can understand that mind reader can trust them easily, but why does everybody else so trusting, when they are so disapointed in life?
An Extra star for sexual themes in first books and all-out pornography in latter books.

First of all, this isn't Space Opera. It's Cyberpunk-influenced MilSF. With vampires and weretigers and two lead characters about whom the only physical description I have is that the female character has black hair. Yes, there is FTL travel, but there's more to Space Opera than FTL. The stakes are too low, for example (Space Opera tends to be larger-than-life with entire civilizations hanging on the actions of a small team of protagonists). There's no sense of chivalry. And it takes place almost entirely on a planet (as far as I got - I only got about 30% of the way in before I gave up).
The lead character's background is time in the military, time in the yakuza, then subjected to some MegaCorp science experiment to turn him into a weretiger to make him The Ultimate Fighter. He's a cardboard cutout who responds to most requests with "Confirmed." And the story steers him - he has no individual drive beyond survival.
It's bad. Really bad. I got about 30% of the way in before giving up.
I enjoy bad books. I really do. But they need to ALSO be fun. This wasn't. This was some sort of bizarre male power fantasy with guns. It read like the planned Shadowrun campaign of someone who couldn't get any players.
I'm just thankful for the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, so the only thing this cost me was time. And I wish I could get a refund on that.

Wooden writing, wooden characters, wooden and unnatural dialogue. The only thing in this book that really comes alive is the lovingly-described violence. Military porn, with slaughter substituted for sex (though all the indications are that there’ll be plenty of sex in later books).

Pick this up!
I was skeptical at first but it gets better as I went along. I'm looking for Book 2 now. Yep.

Story was entertaining enough . . . but too many women for me . . . I'll pass, thanks very much.

I was hopeful, I'd been told this story was comparable to Three Square Meals by Tefler (a gross misjudgment by anyone who thought that was true) and what I found was a steaming pile of pacing mess.
Don't get me wrong this series has some qualities to it. Despite the interesting setting and events and characters or really any other positive traits the story has however it is ruined by the massive flaw that is P A C I N G.
It starts off in action, and by the end of book 2 you still don't even know any real backstories or even the full names of all the main characters introduced in the first two books.
It's just action into more action into more action with convoluted reasons and ridiculous antagonists that are inconsistent and seem to antagonize the main character even against their own revealed interests.
The plot isn't even really moving forward despite all of the action either because we're getting no information of substance, tiny bits of revealed past of the MC here and there that all adds up to nothing. There's 14 books in this series and by the end of book TWO we still don't have the MC's original full name, or the female leads original name, or the second female leads assumed name, she's still just referred to by a single letter of her name that hasn't been revealed because the author couldn't take a couple pages away from the action for the characters to have a simple conversation that didn't revolve around the current action.
So yeah, the pacing is truly horrendous, might even be worst I've ever seen. It had potential as a space opera but not in this author's hands sadly.

This was surprisingly good! The title, the kitschy cover - the whole tiger-man thing.
But it was a good read! Not exactly totally original or beautifully worded, but the story had a fast pace and the characters were interesting enough to keep me interested in their fate.
I might pick up the next one in this series...

This was fun easy to read entertainment. Great plot and character without taking itself to seriously. You can just rip through it and be throughly swept into a great fantasy. Would not appeal to anyone who have strict conservative or orthodox values.

Lycanthropes and vampires in space. A sci-fi harem in the making. This is a power fantasy thinly disguised as a novel.
It is entertaining, but it doesn't require much thought or investment, which is what you need sometimes.

A great time,
I was a bit dubious at first, but the paranormal aspects are done in a great scifi style, well worth getting into this series!

Okay, this was fantastic in concept but the execution is pretty messy. I’m assuming this is one of MSE’s earlier books because it definitely reads like it needs some polishing.
This is supposed to be a “paranormal space opera” book and yet it just feels like a second-rate crime thriller with a sci-fi coat of paint.
The first few chapters are great, but the story starts going massively downhill once the focus shifts to fighting against the evil corporation.
The dialogue is pretty janky. Everyone seems to be saying “uhhh” and “ahhh” every five seconds and it’s really annoying.
Overall, the plot was quite hard to follow and I ended up skimming most of it. On paper, it sounds simple — a weretiger busts a vampire out of stasis and they join up with a hacker to escape from the planet they’re on and take down the Elaka Nota corporation. The problem is that none of the primary characters have enough personality or backstory for me to care about them.
This is the amount of backstory we get for each main character:
- The weretiger guy (Adam) was involved with the Yakuza at one point and there’s something about his mother’s debt, but it’s never even explained what that debt was or how it even affected him. He, along with a bunch of other men, was subject to unethical experiments that turned him into a half-human, half-tiger supersoldier.
- The vampire (Eve) was kept prisoner for years by people who wanted to take advantage of her. Also she can read minds for some reason.
- The hacker (Z) has a boyfriend who immediately gets killed off after selling her out to the bad guys.
This book is so short and there’s so little actual development for the characters or story despite all the action that’s happening. I did expect Adam to get together with one (or both) of the women but it only happens at the very end.
This gets two stars because it was actually moderately enjoyable at some points. It might have gotten three if I actually understood what was going on.

I'm annoyed because I wrote a fairly detailed review of this & posted it to Audible, then the book got removed from Audible (I assume unrelatedly?) the next day, so my review a) never saw publication, and b) is unavailable to copy from.
I grabbed this as something fun & goofy to listen to at work because it looked so ridiculous, but I found myself kind of won over by its silly charm. I mean, this is a sf tale about a weretiger smacking women on their ass right after their boyfriend is murdered into bloody chunks in front of them, and it's meant to be charming. You just can't help but being sucked in.
Playing more like an anime harem comedy than a military sci-fi tale most of the time, this pretty succinctly sets up our three main characters (so far?) (weretiger main dude, who is a weretiger and has tiger abilities because he's a weretiger; telepathic vampire chick who is imperturbable; and foxy hacker chick who gets spanked an inordinate amount), the world they're in, and their overall goal (free all the genetic experiments that corporations have created and caged).
A couple of examples of the writing, for flavor:
'[she brought me a larger portherhouse steak.] the aroma of it filled my sensitive nose, and caused my stomach to roar like the tiger trapped in my sensitive soul.'
'I fought against the anger, but I might as well have been trying to capture a swimming pool with a soda can.' (the author is obsessed with soda cans)
'i squeezed the trigger of my shotgun a few more times to kick the fear away.'
"another drop of pain in my pool of agony"
'pop goes the weasel ... or in this case, the kitty cat.'
Fun stuff.

Not a harem book. No sex. The harem tag is a lie.
This is a decent book with an interesting premise—and I did finish it. But I won’t be reading the second one. It reads more like a series of videogame cutscenes meant to tee up Book 2, rather than a story that stands on its own.
Three issues held it back:
1. The sexual tension is pointless.
The main characters are attractive, clearly into each other… and yet we get a “will they, won’t they” tease better suited to YA girl lit. This isn’t that. Either skip the attraction entirely or let adults act like adults.
2. The characters don’t feel human.
Not because two of them are mutants—but because they don’t react like real people. Eve, the vampire created in a lab, is tortured in a tank for decades and walks it off with no trauma or thirst for revenge. No adjustment, no grief. Just straight into the “let’s free the others” mission like a cutscene ended and is time to play the game. Same with the tiger-boy ex-mercenary—zero emotional arc, just the “killer with a heart of gold” trope. The villains are megacorps. Everyone’s a trope. The emotional realism isn’t there.
3. Non-stop action fatigue.
I like action. But this is reading John Wick, not watching it. Fight after fight, and you know the main three won’t die—so the tension dies too. It’s just endless descriptions of bullets going to body parts with no stakes.
If this were marketed honestly and had some character depth to match the premise, I might’ve kept going. But right now it’s a “press X to skip cutscene” kind of story. Not for me.

I read this book just before the Amazon ban of MSE using my Kindle Unlimited account (he was banned for statistically too many people reading his books using KU and not buying the book outright - so I feel partly responsible). Now that he is releasing his books on his website www.michaelscottearle.com (Book 1 in most of his series is free) I thought I would work on reviewing all the books of his I read before the ban and those I just bought from his website that I recently read.
This was the first book of MSE's I read, the cover pulled me in, I thought wow a weretiger with a gun in a Sci-Fi book, must give that a go. I was sick in bed with the flu at the time and I blasted through the whole series in just a few days. The story is a classic, weretiger meets space vampire (who his slave/soldier team was sent to capture or kill) and falls in love, then the majority of the universe tries their best to kill them, while they both seek answers of who they really are and why they are being hunted. Great action battles (on planets and in space) and few against many fight scenes are well captured and described in detail by MSE, as this tale of an unlikely hero who starts from scratch works his way up. Book 1 is currently free but I doubt you can stop at just one (you have been warned - its super addictive). Another warning: this series gradually introduces adult concepts (sex).

I bought this in Kindle format based on Amazon's recommendation. I still think someone over at Amazon is screwing with me, because if someone had told me this book was about a weretiger and a space vampire-witch I would never have touched this book.
Lots of shooting and killing in this book with a lot of mayhem and destruction. The weretiger is very good at killing and is hard to kill. So far the vampire-witch is more comedic company and sexy eye candy than lethal partner. Although the vampire-witch's telekinetic ability to cause grenades to go around right corners is handy.
I do like how the guns run out of ammo, the tiger has a finite amount of grenades and he remembers to reload his guns. I also like that no matter how bad ass of a kitty is, he is still vulnerable and he knows it.
Excellent military action and so far a decent start of a space opera series. I know we are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but this cover is ok - the cover of the next book is absolutely atrocious.
About the only thing I really hate in this book is the weretiger's continuous use of 'affirmative' and 'confirmed' for saying yes. It sounds wooden and awkward, and you would think that after getting to know each other that he would be less formal with the witch.
