Absolutely adorable! All the stories in this series so far have been entertaining and cute, what with all the shenanigans the dragon kits got into as they were growing up, but now that they are college-age and discovering their mates, I am becoming even more of a fan. But ‘Dragon Lesson’ offers not only Lumie finding his mate amid lots of adventure, it also finally gave me an explanation of Lumie’s somewhat mysterious powers. Add the heartbreaking story of Goldie and his liberation from his past, and I was oohing and awwing the whole time.

A heartwarming and exciting, but also humorous series about a family of dragons working to make their supernatural world a safer place even as they figure out life and love with family togetherness. I'm addicted to the series and get a spark of glee for each new release.

Dragon Lesson is the sixth novella in the series and thrill of all, for me, it's Lumie's story. As the stories progressed from book one, Lumie has been the most unique and curious of Dane and Mercury's dragon kits. Now he's all grown up and experiencing the pangs of first love and adulthood as he faces the challenge of college and his first job outside of home.

I loved meeting Lumie's match in Goldie, the timid, quiet yet quite skilled elemental dragon. Goldie wants to overcome his fears and be worthy of Lumie who he thinks is losing patience with him for being so timid. The pair have a strong adventure together both in the start of love and their mission for the government. It was neat to finally get the secret behind Lumie's special brand of magic that goes beyond what a dragon normally has.

The author has a great talent for getting inside her dragons' minds. As each chosen kit gets to tell his story as he reaches adulthood, she gives them a personal and fascinating outlook and individuality. Lumie was a little cocky and even a little lazy because he is so powerful and he faces his first real challenges in the big wide world. Goldie is slow into things, but he does eventually get there when he is most needed.

In the author's world of dragons, they can recognize their future mate, but still have to put in the work of a relationship, not to mention they have dragon traits that make their outlook very different from humans on the subject of relationships and everything else. The guys are cute and I loved seeing them work through their misunderstandings and engage in first love.

The tone is light and fun while still exciting. I've been raving about this series since the beginning and still encourage those looking for unique light and quick stories to give these sweeter M/M Urban fantasies a go.

My thanks to Less Than Three Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I just found out that Dragon Lesson by Mell Eight is the seventh book in a series called Supernatural Consultant. Although I feel like I may be missing things, I felt it was very easy to follow and it is SO GOOD. It is one of my favorite science fiction books in 2020 - 2021. I love the concept of a supernatural investigator looking into a dragon sighting - wholesome, humourous, and clever. Plus there is a romance and backstories it seems like. It was easy to follow as I felt like I didn't miss much but there were certain situations and characters, such as the main two, where I felt I was missing chunks of information.
I wish I can say more because this is a series, but I need to read from the beginning. I did enjoy what I read so far!

Special thanks to NetGalley and NineStar Press, LLC for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A fun short read with dragons. The characters are well developed for such a short read.

The plot is also interesting and comes to well rounded off conclusion, that will lead to a sequel from here.

If you are looking for short and sweet with a dash of cute this one is for you.

This series reads with the feels of a lifetime movie, only I'm awake at the end. What I love about this is the author took an original concept--a supernatural consultant investigates a dragon sighting--and has spun it into an extended universe that is as believable as it is fluffy. It's not easy to write a sweet romance that doesn't devolve into saccharine nausea, but time and time again this series has delivered. I also want to note how much I appreciate the world building, especially with respect to the dragon backstory. Retired is the overdone trope of 'dragons are the shifter apex predator;' here we see a much more interesting take casting dragons as naive, slightly ignorant beings that too frequently end up preventing their own success themselves. It's an interpretation of shifters that feels original and fresh, I love it!

Dragon Lesson is the seventh book in the Supernatural Consultant series, and FINALLY gives Lumie the chance to shine! I actually thought this was the final book, but this one ends on a HUGE cliffhanger, so that corrected my assumption. I'm a little gutted to discover that the final book isn't finished or scheduled for a release in the near future, which means I'll have to wait impatiently for it to come out, so that I can finish the story!

This is Lumie's long-awaited (by me!) story and he's 19 years old, and it's been 13 years since he saved Goldie, who we knew at the time was a fascination for him. That's only grown in the intervening years and Lumie is flat-out in love with Goldie, who is reeling from his years under the scientist's scalpel. There's a touch of PTSD, and he's afraid of everything and everyone! Lumie – in typical Lumie fashion – does his own thing and pops into Goldie's life whenever he feels like it, but lately he's starting to realise he might be an annoyance and that's no way to win Goldie's affection. So, Lumie pulls back just as Goldie is starting to realise how he feels for Lumie! Argh! The angst!

What's interesting is that Lumie and Goldie actually go to college together, as well as agreeing to work for the FBSI as part of a deal. The FBSI want Lumie and his powers, but Alloy and Goldie desperately want to go to college, so Lumie selflessly (though grudgingly) realises that he's the key to what will make both people he loves happy. Thus ensues chaos in true Lumie style.

I don't want to say too much about the plot, because it's more fun to read it yourself, but let's just say that it's a mix of teenage angst, Lumie craziness and a little bittersweet in ways.

I really loved that, in college, Lumie got to finally learn what really happened to his magic to make him so special. While it was really sad for him to realise what the scientists had done to him, it was great that he finally got to learn more about his abilities and how to harness them. In the same way, it was nice for Goldie to get that same epiphany of what his abilities were and how to use them properly.

More than anything, I FLOVE how respectful and considerate, how protective and mature Lumie has become. There's a point where he thinks Goldie doesn't like his attention or that he's not wanted, so he pulls back to give Goldie space and to stop annoying him. But there's also a really pivotal moment where Lumie is frustrated that Goldie won't smile for him like he does in a vision he's had of the future, but he's mature enough to realise that it doesn't matter if that smile isn't for him, and it's really for someone else, because all that matters is that Goldie is happy. That was a really beautiful moment for this pair. The misunderstandings killed me, but this part more than made up for it.

Overall, I loved everything about the plot – from Lumie and Goldie's romance, from the progression of the previous investigation into the scientists, the revelation of Lumie's magical abilities, and how it all culminated into a continuation and blending of two different cases from the page. I cannot even express how much I'm looking forward to the final book. I am just a little worried though, because it's been 3 years since Dragon Lesson and there's no telling when Dragon Spy might release...yet. I'm hopefully it won't be too long, but whenever it happens, I'll be happy to come back to re-read Dragon Lesson beforehand, as a well-needed refresher.

My long-running grumble about this cute series has always been “needs more Lumie”, so imagine my delight when I discovered that not only was this Lumie’s book, but that he also wasn’t about to be romantically paired up with Alloy. (Goldie? Who is Goldie? Did I miss something?) Then imagine my horror when I found out that Lumie was all grown up, whiny and lazy, and I didn’t like him much at all!

Thankfully this doesn’t last long. Yes, he’s a bit whiny and is very lazy, but he’s still cheeky little Lumie underneath, doing unfathomable things with his magic just because he can. And the way he feels about Goldie is so sweet. He tries so hard to make the quiet, nervous dragon smile for him, wanting him to feel safe and be happy, but he’s also mature enough to realise that not even his crazy-wonderful magic can fix everything.

I liked Goldie too, even if he is very nervy and uncertain at first, and his sudden sadness over Lumie giving up on him seemed to come out of nowhere. I absolutely adored seeing him overcome his fears and take control of his powers. He’s a strong dragon, but still sweet underneath, and a perfect match for Lumie.

It was also great to see Lumie face challenges for the first time. He’s pretty cocky about his abilities and how instinctive they’ve always been, so it was interesting to learn a little more about what they are and where they come from. I liked seeing the relationship between him and Goldie grow too. Just because Lumie’s always known Goldie was his mate, didn’t mean it was easy, so that was nice.

Away from these two, it looks like the overall plot has kick-started again, which is great because I was beginning to wonder just how much longer the series would continue. Now I have high hopes that there’s still plenty more to come, especially Alloy. This book needed more Alloy… because, apparently, I am never satisfied. Can’t wait for more!

This is the sixth book in the Supernatural Consultant series and likely best enjoyed when read in order–but can be enjoyed on its own.

Lumie (short for Aluminum) is an 18 year old fire dragon kit, just maturing enough to be striking out on his own, but he’s not really keen on it. It’s nice living home with his foster fathers, Dane and Mercury. Dane is a half-god who controls the supernatural creature realm in the northeast US, and Mercury is a precious copper dragon with magic of his own. Lumie was experimented on in the egg, and maybe as a hatchling, but he was soon rescued by Mercury and later they were all picked up by Dane, as Mercury had fallen ill and couldn’t care for his six rescued kits. Over the years Dane and Mercury have made a cozy family–one determined to shut down dragon experimentation for good. Lumie’s magic is far different from a normal fire dragon, he can teleport, and walk through even Dane’s impenetrable wards. And, he’s prescient, with an uncanny ability to see the future. And Lumie know that his future is tied to Goldie.

Goldie is a precious gold dragon, which has more innate magic than ordinary element dragons. He was kept in a human lab for years before he was rescued, and the pain and terror of those days walks with him still, despite being 19. For near on a decade, Goldie has watched Lumie hang about the edges of his life in the quiet household where Goldie was adopted, as Lumie visits nearly every week. Lumie has flashes of Goldie smiling at him with love, but that’s a premonition; Goldie’s hardly ever even spoken to Lumie in all their time together. It’s funny that Lumie has almost verbal diarrhea around Goldie, who listens closely and wishes for half the fearlessness of Lumie. Lumie has big news for Goldie, though–he’s been offered a guaranteed admission and full scholarship to any college of his choice, if only he will agree to work for the Supernatural Federation, a government agency tasked with managing the well-being of supes and humans alike. Lumie has no interest in college, but his dear brother Alloy really wants to go, and Lumie suspects that Goldie does as well–he’s extremely into their schoolwork, though Lumie doesn’t know why. Lumie sees the promise in this offer, though, and promptly negotiates acceptances for Alloy and Goldie, once they agree.

Ultimately, Lumie sees the college path as a way to get Goldie to move in together, and maybe he’ll get to see that love-filled smile. It’s actually not too long before Goldie and Lumie are learning a whole lot about themselves and one another. Their college has all sorts of magic theory classes, and Lumie finally learns the source of his unusual magic powers. Goldie also learns how to shut out the emotions of those around him–and use his unexpected gift to waylay bad guys. And, just in time too, because they are now on assignment to track down some dudes who’ve been kidnapping supes and forcing them into bloodsport for gambling rings. Lumie had never expected his magic would fail him, but his new education helps him see a way past his captors, and right into Goldie’s arms forever.

This is a YA paranormal romance with innocent first kisses and dreams built on a vision of the future. It’s sweet and entertaining, with just the right amount of action to balance the romance. I love how Lumie had to really grow beyond his lackadaisical life, and skills, to become capable of being responsible for himself and Goldie. And Goldie’s growth from timid and shattered to fierce enough to defend his life-mate? So engaging. The more of these stories I read, the more I can’t wait to read another. I wonder if Alloy will find his mate in the next installment!

“Dragon Lesson” by Mell Eight is part of the ‘Supernatural Consultant’ series and centers on Lumi and Goldie as their relationship evolves and they begin to take on professional responsibilities for the government. Their adventures force them outside of their comfort zones, but it also helps them learn about their abilities and each other’s role in their relationship.

This gay fantasy story is part of a fun series that features several types of dragons who have different abilities, depending on the metal they are named for and the experiments that were performed on them. I enjoy the whimsical nature of their powers and interactions (who knew young dragons could be prompted to obey rules by withholding their favorite flavor of candy?) and it is so entertaining to watch them get into and out of scrapes with ingenuity. I’m reminded of the humor and fantastical adventures of Patricia Wrede’s ‘Enchanted Forest’ tales and I always have a smile on my face as I read these stories that combine fantasy and romance in a gentle tale, despite some of the horrifying experiences that the kits have experienced.

My biggest complaint is that the stories are too short, but I’m always glad to see there’s a new adventure available. Lumi (his element is aluminum) is one of the most unique of all of the kits, and his powers are still being explored, but I’m delighted that he and Goldie are growing up, and I look forward to seeing what other challenges they will face together. Ideally, one should read the entire series from the beginning for the most enjoyment of this tale, but I suspect that a reader new to this world would still be intrigued by the hijinks that are spotlighted in this tale alone.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Dragon Lesson is the 7th book in the Supernatural Consultant series by Mell Eight. Originally released in 2017, this reformat and re-release by NineStar Press is out 30th Nov 2020. It's a novella length short read at 99 pages and available in ebook format.

All of the books in the series are fun and quick reads full of romance and romantic drama. It's been entertaining to watch the dragon kits grow up and find their ways into young adulthood. This story provides some deeper backstory for the returning characters as well as providing returning readers the happy dragon family they have come to expect.

It does work well as a standalone story, the author is adept at providing setting and background without info dumping or overwhelming the reader. The story is a sweetly written short interlude episode in a continuing series. The romantic relationships in the series are mostly M/M.

Four stars. I recommend it for readers of romance who like happily-ever-after endings.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

4.5 stars!

Lumie has been my favourite character in this series and I'm glad we've finally reached his story. Time really flew forward considering he's 19 in this book though his general character of being lazy (something I can relate to) was still there. I loved seeing things from his point of view and how his magic worked, a mystery that was solved in this book.

It was easy to see how smitten Lumie was with Goldie though it seemed like they had some major miscommunications. They generally made a cute pair.

The half star off was because of

Overall, it was a cute short story!

From that review: " We're now up to book six in the Supernatural Consultant series by Mell Eight and she's still running strong and not out of dragon kits yet.  In Dragon Lesson, it's one of my favorite of Dane and Mercury's odd children or dragon kits as it were.  Lumie, a dragon of mixed elements the result of heinous scientific experiments, he's been something of an adorable enigma throughout most of the stories.  He's been capable of astonishing feats of power even at the youngest of age and has abilities that not even his mixed elemental powers can explain.  Now of age to go to college, Lumie finds himself at a crossroads at every stage of his life..."

This book cannot be read as a standalone, but it's worth reading the rest of the series before hand, as it's really well written and fun to read. This one was another quick and easy addition to the main series and concentrated on Lumie and Goldie, with the occasional piece from other characters point of view. I really liked finding out about Lumie and what made him so different from the others in his magic (and no I'm not telling you what that is), I also enjoyed how Goldie grew and learnt to deal with his own magics, and the interaction between them both was really good.

As I've said before if you like interesting characters, dragons, magic, and a smidgen of romance in your fantasy then this series is well worth following.

Lumie has been reaching out to Goldie as carefully as he can. Goldie is still traumatized from being experimented on and everything terrifies him. Lumie agrees to go to college so that Goldie can go too, of course where Lumie goes, disaster usually follows.

I loved the beginning of Lumie and Goldie’s romantic relationship. Lumie has always been my favorite of Mercury and Dane’s kits. Even though Lumie has always been a walking disaster (usually of his own making) he’s matured enough to make someone else his priority.

As usual, my only complaint is the story is too short. The writing is wonderful and I enjoy learning a bit more about of each dragons capabilities with each book. This isn’t a series the reader can just drop into. It needs to be read in order for maximum enjoyment.

Lumie has grown up in this book 15 years and he’s in love with Goldie a dragon rescued when they were young.
Lumie gets flashes of future happenings and in one Goldie is smiling at him, he does everything in his power to bring that about even if it’ll cause him to stop being lazy and learn more!
A lovely story of the boys growing up.
I adore this series watching each character find their own special someone is wonderful thank you Mell Eight keep writing

Aww, Lumie… he may be all grown up, but he’s still a handful. 😉

Dragon Lesson was a book of discovery for the most part. Lumie discovered where his unique brand of magic came from and Goldie discovered why his fear was so intense. The two of them helped each other.

This story was adorable. For as self-assured as Lumie was, that flew out the window when it came to Goldie. He’s known him for years, but he’s kept his distance and limited his in person visits to what he thought Goldie could handle. Goldie, on the other hand, lived for his visits from Lumie, but wouldn’t tell him that because he was afraid that once he confessed, he’d lose what little contact he had with Lumie forever. Yeah, they were adorably awkward. ❤

When the opportunity came for Goldie go out into the world, Lumie was more than happy to offer him any support he needed. Even if it was just to be his friend. Goldie was willing to brave his fears to support Lumie as well, whether he thought he needed it or not. Together they both found a way to get what they needed and more than they hoped for.

Dragon Lesson was short and sweet, which has been the case with most of the books in the Supernatural Consultant series. I loved watching the kits get into trouble while they were little, but I have to admit, I’m also enjoying watching them grow up and find their own mates. 😉

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Dragon Lesson. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3.5* upped as it is Lumie’s story
Not as mischievous now he is a bit older but fun all the same.
We get a bit more on the evil people experimenting on dragon kits.
We get a development for Lumie and Goldie though it did come along quite quickly despite the years building up to.
Both Lumie and Goldie learn more about their magic too.

This series was, in one word, adorable. Very teenage-meet-new-adult. I don't think I've ever read a book that used the words "evil", "scientists", "enemy" and "kit" so much and often in the same sentence. It was pretty annoying. Like reading a children's book that reinforces certain words kids that age need to learn.
The side stories (books 5.1 and 5.2) were very childish, it was just like reading a book aimed at preteens. The best one was the first, it pretty much went downhill from there. I did like Dane and I loved Nickel. He was so cool, they both were. And I was dying to know what William is and I did like it.
I liked that the stories after Mercury and Dane's were of the kits, and I liked how they stayed a bit childish when they grew up, with the fixation on their special candy, the propensity to misbehaving and the general cluelessness that comes from innocence. It really showed that dragons are immortal until killed by an external force. I liked how matured Nickel was from such a young age, while still keeping that innocence and playfulness the others were basically made of. It made think of how a dragon is forever young but also a force to be reckoned with even from a young age. How they are wild beasts. Free and ruthless.
