Alpha's Woman #1

The Alpha's Woman

Rate this book
When she is released from the stasis she voluntarily entered, the world that greets Emily Harding is far from what she expected. It more closely resembles a post-apocalyptic novel than the rolling green Tennessee hills she’s left behind.

Worse than that, it seems that the rule of law is a thing of the past, and that society has devolved into what it was thousands of years ago – feudal tribes warring with each other over precious and rare supplies, which includes females. One type of female in particular.

It is raw, unforgiving, and animalistic. Much like the behavior of the man who takes her and holds her there, forcing her to learn that even she is not unaffected by the changes that have been wrought on the world, proving to her time and time again that she is nothing more to him than a means to obtain children.

And making her scream in agonizing pleasure as he does so.

Publisher’s Note: The Alpha's Woman is a dark tale with some explicit themes.

Carolyn was one of you as a kid, with the intriguing seeds planted in her head of the shivering thrill-thoughts that came with words like spanking, or discipline. As with you, those kinds of words and thoughts connected the heated blush of her cheeks with feelings elsewhere, which got more and more interesting the older she got.

I bet you know just what I'm talking about.

Like some, she started writing down these thoughts, escaping into short stories of reluctant heroes willing to take someone they love in hand when it's for her own good... and more shadowy thoughts as her imagination matured.

And like some, she started sharing her writings in newsgroups once she gained some confidence.

There's nothing like the perfectly-turned phrase, the handful of words that can make a feeling wash over you. And if you're reading this, then you have within you some intense feelings that most of the world doesn't understand -- but Carolyn does, and she writes those passions with wondrous abandon. Her specialties are Spanking Romance and Adult Ageplay, so we've grouped the many examples of her work that way.

Spanking Romance Classics are sweeping love stories which dare (in a very un-PC way) to allow their heroine to feel the special love of a strong man who will take her in hand when it's best for her. Carolyn writes very real, rich characters and stories that aren't just excuses to jump from spanking scene to spanking scene. If the timeless tango of pursuing ardor touches you, and the head-rush of Adoring Discipline intrigues you, then you'll love Carolyn's stories!

dnf @ 10% - skimmed to the end.

I really wanted to like this book. This is the first book by Carolyn Faulkner I've read and I've heard great things about her. I'm going to read other things she's written outside Omegaverse though.

I basically agree with most of the low reviews. The writing is good - but boring and unmemorable. I was never really drawn into the story or fully captivated. Even the sex scenes seemed dull; passionless in how they were written. The smut was strangely purple; vague descriptions when usually Omegaverse is much more explicit. Lots of euphemisms like "his maleness" instead of "cock" or "her feminity" instead of "pussy" or hell this is erotica, "cunt." I mean there were phrases like: "he was stretching every single millimeter of her femininity to capacity." lol @ the use of the word millimeter and femininity and capacity. idk, sorry for nitpicking, but this isn't hot to me.

Both characters personalities were rather boring; no stage presence on the pages. World-building came across as shallow.

I mean, I can tell this author can write - the sentences were coherent...I'll read other stuff by her...I just completely agree with the reviews that call this unmemorable.

I started it thinking it was one of Carolyn Faulkner dark romance, well it wasn't, she definitely wrote darker than that and I prefer her dark books. As for the story it fell flat for me, the plot reminded me of Born to be Bound by Addison Cain, about the Alphas and their Omegas in a post apocalyptique universe, except in Cain's book you really feel that your in a world of despair, where when you're weak you die. Here, the Society where Emmy finds herself in wasn't described at all, and I think it's very important when reading a dark dystopian book that the reader can tell himself: "Waw, I'm happy this isn't my world"..... Anyway, it's an Ok light read.

Words don't fail me now because I'm at a loss for them with this book. This book was just so blahhh and ehhh. Addison Cain has ruined me because there is no one that can write these alpha books like her. I don't hold people up to her standard but I was bored with the story and the sad thing is that it had so much potential but everything was so rushed and skipped over. Everything I read was so predictable that I started questioning whether I was a psychic or Cassandra. I don't know, I just didn't feel it with this one. I'm usually so lax with the rating of these books but I have to give this one a 2 because it killed some time and it wasn't horrible. Also, the ending left room for something better hopefully to come. I can't rate it much higher than that.

2.5-3ish Stars
Omegaverse has its own style. If you’re not familiar with the genre, it’s very much a dominant alpha that some readers could find abusive and a submissive Omega. The premise is that they both succumb to their instincts, with Alpha’s being bossy, and Omega’s betraying body syndrome (BBS) being too much to resist. Typically, the Omega resents her biological response and her Alpha. Also, they have their own brand of steamy-time, which isn’t always hot with knotting, barbs, and slick.

The Alpha’s Woman is the first book in a five book (at this time) series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. If rating this simply as a short (almost novella) Omegaverse on KU… 2.5-3 ish ⭐’s. BUT If rating against a similar post-apocalyptic series like Born to be Bound… 1.5ish ⭐’s. Hopefully that helps with perspective. Basically, it’s entertaining enough, but there’s not enough development to be awesome.

For instance, there is virtually no world building which makes “getting immersed” in the story nearly impossible. Emmy wakes up to a devastated/unrecognizable world. I get that people are pretty much barbarians with semi-primitive knowledge, but some of them can read and they have a library full of books. Yet they have zero knowledge of what happened other than the “gummint” was to blame, and they changed them. Which was another issue; Emmy was from the Before the end (past/pre-genetic manipulation), so how does she emerge from her pod an Omega? Like she was a normal chick that now suffers from mega BBS, including “dripping cream” (running down her legs pooling) anytime she’s around her alpha. Not to mention, why doesn’t she know what year it is? Surely, she agreed to the length of stasis, and knew what year she’d be waking up in. We have no idea if it’s been 10, 50, 100+ years.

The rest is pretty standard. He’s gruff; she’s resentful, and lots of sex. Emmy wasn’t bad, but her resistance did get a little old because she failed to recognize her situation. She had zero options; it’s not like she was kidnapped and had a home to return to. She was alone and starving, and faces being abused, raped, and forced into a breeding house. Instead, she’s living with a hot dude with food, water, books, and great sex, yet she still complains…and complains.

Bottom Line- Not bad, not great. If you can look past the holes, missing info, and him calling her “Little Girl” 😒it’s an easy read to get through. It’s really short, and the entire series is free with KU. They’re (at least the first 2) pretty formulaic, so if you hated this, chances are you’ll hate the rest. It’s not super dark IMO, the language is a bit crude, but she’s not abused. (spanking for punishment) Vaudt is clueless to female needs, but not cruel. There’s dub-con in that she hates that her body reacts, and might say no a couple times but that’s when she’s dripping and gets with it immediately.

For dystopian omegaverse this was just too mamby pamby. The fmc wakes up from a stasis pod and Tennessee has become the Mojave desert. That’s basically the world building. I never figured out how long fmc was in stasis or what happened . H spots her, grabs her and then sec, sex, sex…. Tbh it got boring. If you’ve read Addison Caines omegaverse you will be let down with this one. I might try the next one.

DYSTOPIAN WORLD

I have mixed emotions on this book, and while it was interesting, it was more a story narrated and not really dialog or interaction. As a fan of Carolyn Faulkner books, this one didn’t pull me in as most of her books do, and it is between a 3 to 3½ stars.

Emily “Emmy” Harding, a widow, decides to leave her home in Vermont and go to a facility in Tennessee and be placed in stasis, hoping for a better world when she emerges in the future. We don’t really know much about what her world was like, but that her husband and love of her life has died. There is no time reference to her past or when she will wake up in the future.

The plot will have Emmy coming out of stasis and discovering the other two people she knew of are both dead, the facility ransacked, and the world around her is destitute. Knowing that food and water are critical she starts searching for those items. Needing a safe shelter, she will locate a cave and start making it her home with some of the items she procures at the facility.

After weeks on her own, she will be discovered by Valdt, a very large and dominant male who will rape her on the scene and take her back with him. Valdt isn’t what one would call human, maybe an evolution resulting from wars on earth. He has canine teeth, and when he mates or bonds with her, it is more animalistic.

Emmy will become a prisoner of the Alpha Valdt, she is his Omega, and his goal is to impregnate her with his child or children. We don’t know much about his world, just that he battles, his doctors are eunuchs, and that he will kill men who even get close to her. The world has changed, and not for the better, now women are possessions and their use it to serve men and breed. All Emmy can think of is escaping. Will she have help to make it possible, and if she does, what will her life be like?

“There is no escape. I don’t care if the fairy tales you spin are the truth. They are of no consequence to you, regardless. This is what you want, what you need. It is who and what you are now. Make it easier on yourself and accept it. Tell me you are mine.”

The story has many detailed sex scenes or bonding between Valdt and Emmy.

I've read several books by Carolyn Faulkner and have decided I like her harsher/darker books better than her sweet ones. This book falls into that category. The setting is post apocalyptic with a society that has become very harsh indeed. I believe the term omegaverse would apply to this story, although I'm not entirely sure I'm using the term correctly.

We aren't given much information about why Emily has decided to put herself into stasis at such a young age, but clearly the society she wakes in is not the one she expected. This part of the plot is a bit of a stretch, but then again it's best to just set aside worries about believability and just enjoy the story. The story is really quite good, and the society Emily finds herself in quite chilling, but fascinating to read.

Unfortunately, the way the story is told feels like a step or two removed from the action. Punishments are given, but we mostly experience them in Emily's thoughts after they've already occurred. Although the writing was fairly solid technically, there was far too much telling and not enough showing to really draw me in. The ending was satisfying, but could have been drawn out a bit more I think. The final punishment was particularly strange to me. It happened too far after the event that gave rise to it, and felt like it was tossed in to satisfy a type of checklist... just not making much sense or even providing much erotic interest in my opinion.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

I'm with Becca. Too much telling, not enough showing. Book #2 is much stronger and you can read it as a stand alone. In general I love this authors harsher books - I'm lukewarm to ambivalent about the lighter, fluffier romances.

Wow, this could have been a really good alpha/omega book.

It started out really interesting. If you like the alpha/omega universe, and therefor know what to expect.
Until, apparently the author decided let’s not waste any more precious time and rush right through the book.
We have in general a lack of descriptions and world building.
And at 91% it was more than only disappointing. It was horrible. After building up all the emotional and social conflicts. The author seems to have run out of steam and simply resolved all just in one final chapter. As if she said to herself, well fuck it, i need to go get some groceries before the store closes. I have got no time for this.

How can you sabotage your own work so badly by such a rushed and silly ending? Without any work of both sides to reconcile and find a common ground.
To make her go through weeks of depression and by a simple moment, we have a 1-80.

It is just sad.

A very short book that left a lot of questions. It was quite hard for me to get into it although I like omegaverse books. Little world building, character building, and story building. One sec she is depressed and wants to leave and literally the next sec she changes her mind. Sometimes I got lost in the sentence or in the paragraph. Who's mind am I in now? This book takes sharp turns. One time read.

This book is everything it promises to be and more. Emily comes out of stasis into a nightmare. She is claimed by Vaudt, who is able to protect her from the terrors of the world in which she now resides. Although she has an animalistic attraction to her protector, she longs for freedom. I felt that she should be grateful for her safety, but Emily was clearly unable to embrace being controlled. This conflict provided an interesting plot within the backdrop of a horrific world. Written in the unique brilliant style of Carolyn Faulkner, the story flowed easily and was hard to put down.

This book is based in the omegaverse world, please research before you judge the ‘universe’. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s definitely mine.

Romance: Stamped Romance, not convincing on Emmy’s end.
Heat: 3/5, mediocre and lacks detail.
HEA: I guess, yeah. If you like it or not, I’m more inclined to the ‘Not’ side.
Dark: evidently - (1) Kind of ‘Rape’ scene (I personally don’t think it was one, to each is own.
Cause it didn’t really read as one to actually be convincing), Some Reprimand Spanking (3? Maybe, but they were sooooo due), and a Belt meets Butt scolding scene.
These 3 things and it’s a ‘Dark’ Book (?), Honestly it wasn’t AT ALL Dark to Me, and I’m Disappointed!

Now that that’s said, boy this book was a train wreck...poor excuse for an omegaverse, I believe the author might’ve read some and was inspired.
Then had a brain fart as soon as the typing began. There was no in depth research done about the omegaverse, very apparent.
Only thing that was Omegaverse was the Size Difference between Alpha & Omega (height wise also too the smexy scenes lol), the Knot, the Wetness, Betas, Ranking. That’s just what you got and understood clearly, doesn’t mean any of it was actually clearly or at all explained. Other than that you know nothing.

How can I read a whole book, then after finishing closing the book, come to realize I learned nothing from the world I just read?

I’m actually struggling if I should give this book, 1 or 2 stars.

This book is 134 pages long, and I’ve read shorter stories that had a better plot that made more sense, and left me extremely satisfied with the ending.

Emma is ‘23’ as of where she was put in stasis, and I’m a confused at how she was a nurse and how ‘smart’ she supposedly is...
The Dystopian World, I guess doesn’t go by years and the whole society doesn’t know how to read, yet can do some surgeries even if they ’caveman’ it in a medieval game of thrones way with modern equipment that’s conveniently still around. Seriously! You get no real description of anything.

The time lapsing is nauseatingly pitiful, and I guess because this world doesn’t go by years, you don’t really know how many days actually go by in some areas of the book... it’s confusing.

75% of this book Emma is locked in a bedroom/apartment, and honestly that didn’t bother me, it was more to the fact that the author literally didn’t describe much at all (landscape for this dystopia ‘primitive not so primitive’ Earth, don’t know what the characters look like really, why is there a battle, is there still omegas, how did Emma’s get to where she was, what was this testing project she did, so...yeah..no answers to anything, and I can believe I’m saying this but it’s smutty yet without detail...does that make sense? Cause that’s what I got and I’m love books that have lots of sex but in this book it seemed like continuous fillers, she’s not pregnant and she didn’t go through a heat, no nesting (that is usually typical of an omega) and got little to no ‘answers’ for everything.
Except when some of the answers came out like a bucket of wet trash dumped on your face at the end, as the epilogue.
The epilogue was a crappy stamped fast paced ‘HEA’ that was utterly lackluster.

Vaudt (The Alpha, and a damn good one) DESERVES a better Omega than EMMY!
You barely know him even to what he really looks like, but he reminds me of Khal Drogo, look, ranking and behavior wise. He’s Street Smart Intelligent, But Primitive Caveman-y Omegaverse Behavior - Alpha Smexy.

Emmy (she is no Daenerys, let me just tell you that, quite the opposite) is a over Opinionated chic, that is supposedly smart but I find her street smarts severely lacking and hun you need that to survive a ’Cavemen Medieval’ Dystopian Omegaverse.
(Again...no actual description/details)
The whole high opinion of herself for taking the birth control pills, was just eye rolling to me. Her Scheming was teeth grindingly stupid and I found interesting that she quickly trusted people she didn’t really know (not including Vaudt), and she could’ve gotten Vaudt killed. Did not like her from the beginning really, she is the most selfish omega I’ve ever read and even at the end she is still keeping the birth control scheme a secret. Poor Vaudt.

I would’ve liked this a lot better if she had died at the weird battle (?) scene....then we could’ve started with Vaudt seeking for a strong Queen to his King. I never craved an ending like that before.

I have to say, this book is SEVERELY FAST PACED and you barely get details, I’m telling you it’s frustrating, I almost DNF’d this several times but I wanted it to be good and was not shocked that it wasn’t.

I’m just glad this book was free...
Will I read more from this author...less than likely.

Hot! Hot! Hot! This was a very hot and steamy read. In fact I've read it twice already. To be honest, I didn't much care for the heroine the first time around, which was odd because she is perhaps one of the more realistic heroines I've encountered in capture based stories. She fights her captivity as much as possible which I think would be most people's reactions to being in a similar situations. However, she started to grow on me the second time I read it. I also felt like the ending was a bit rushed and the epilogue left me wishing for sequel, if not with these characters then at least in this world. Nevertheless, a very sexy steamy romance.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. Emily wakes up to a scary world. Nothing like the world she went to sleep in. This post-apocalyptic life is harsh and dangerous. Especially for women. She is taken by the Alpha, Vaudt. He is huge, strong, dominant, violent and he wants Emmy. He insists they are bonded and she will give him children. Sex with him is scary, ecstatic and painful. Which should she choose, his scary world or the terrifying world outside his outpost. Sex, spanking, violence.

Interesting. I liked the book, for the most part. Emmy was kept in the dark quite a bit, which meant the reader wasn't well informed either, but the bits shared were intriguing and left you wanting more. Some things were a bit glossed over, like what her days were like for her. I would have liked to have had more time with the main two, but I liked what was given. I am not sure I liked the ending. Too sudden.

This book gets one of my less common 5 stars. It is DARK. The writing is exceptional, given it's breeding theme and numerous mating scenes. The sex scenes are somewhat hot but laced with severe darkness that could be triggers for some. Non-consent is often noted; however, I felt that there was consent albeit reluctant, another sign of good writing with themes on the edge as is found here.
The premise of this story I thoroughly enjoyed, post-apocalyptic erotic science fiction romance. I don't care much for time-travel and even less for shifter. Elements tying these genres together are soundly established into the story and plot, not fanciful at all.
Possible spoilers occur from here.
For such a short novella the plot twists surrounding true depression, as well as, surprise treachery and betrayal do not come across as rushed or slighted. Although there is a disconnect between the hero and heroine throughout the story because of the setting primarily, honest feelings between them do grow. The author whom I have often read does an excellent job of developing her main characters and devising an edgy story with an unexpected but totally believable ending of love and hopefulness.

What have I read, what the hell is this? The heroine hates the hero, she is depressed, aware that she has nowhere to go. If she leaves she will be raped and she will be a sex slave and yet it is better for her to leave Alpha who watches over her and loves her ???? How stupid do you have to be? Adapt, woman, adapt!
The end of the catastrophe, in half a page she decided to love him. WTH?
I gave two wobbly stars only because of the premise of the book, although there are a lot of holes in a plot, when it happened the big THING that changed history, what was the time when the heroine was put in the stasis, not to mention the stupid explanation why the hero can not read ... oh dear god
Just...no.

I was hooked in the beginning, but as the story went on, I started to lose interest because of Emily's back and forth feelings with Vaudt. The whole storyline/angle with Racide and Hinda was a little odd IMO, and the ending felt very rushed and it seemed like Emily changed her mind about Vaudt rather quickly.

This book had a very good start, I was quickly pulled into the story.
It was easy to picture the environment where the main characters lived, but what pulled it down for me was that the ending happened out of nowhere I felt. It was far too sudden and I was left feeling a little left out. I felt it was a bit rushed.
But it's not a bad book, I still recommend it! :)

I am so glad I didn’t have to pay for this book! This book started off strong and was very descriptive in detailing everything.single.thing. I mean it got to the point where I would skip ahead a few sentences or even paragraphs because I felt the author droned on. The character potential was there but got sloppy about halfway through. Emmy’s feelings for Vaudt suddenly changed and I was left feeling confused. I can guess why, but there was no leading to this change. One paragraph she loves and cares for him and 4 paragraphs later she completely stops talking to him and wants absolutely nothing to do with him! The abrupt ending left me confused as well. I just don’t get how the author could drone on for the first half of the book then decide to briefly cover a war scene! Especially when the Alpha’s Omega was being held hostage! It was ONE PAGE! How can you go on and on describing a library but gloss over an Alpha protecting his Omega? After you’ve read the 4 paragraphs covering the “battle”, you’ll turn the page and probably be as surprised as I was to see you’re about to read the epilogue of the book. The epilogue contains more conversation between Emmy and Vaudt than all the previous chapters combined, and even this is quickly rushed. I’ve barely gotten into reading books delving into the “Omegaverse”, so I was excited to find another series dedicated to Alpha/Omega relationships, but “The Alpha’s Woman” was a letdown!

Not in stasis anymore...

4 STARS for The Alpha’s Woman

The Alpha’s Woman is a smoking hot read set in a post apocalyptic America where people have reverted to raiding and pillaging neighbouring communities. Where men are Alpha, war crazed brutes, and women are far and few between. As far as the readers know is this Omegaverse themed story, Omegas are rare, ultra rare, and as a whole, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of women in general.

Our MC Emmy, is from the past, put in stasis in hopes of awakening in a better future, but that’s not what she gets. Her world has changed drastically and reverted to what Emmy sees as a “cave man” attitude to women. The world she knows is destroyed, and people live in bands/packs protected by their Alpha warlord.

I really liked this story. It borders on the longer side of a Novella. The writing flowed and the Alpha/Omega dynamic kept me glued to my kindle. I do wish there was a bit more world building. The story ends rather abruptly with a hopeful future for our two lead characters. But I think I was wishing for something a little more.

There are potential triggers in this book as it explores alpha/omega dynamics in the Omegaverse world.
If this bears no meaning than just be aware this is dub and non con. As well as implied violence towards women.

Betting on a better future, a woman takes a chance on a scientific study program. As soon as she wakes up from her prolonged sleep, she realizes something has gone catastrophically wrong. Setting about to find the basics she needs to survive, she's quickly captured by a man who does not hesitate to punish for any disobedience. The world she knows is now vastly different and she struggles to find her place in it. She has difficulty letting go of the the way life should be and this prevents her from succeeding in the world she now finds herself. The man who captured her is nothing like what she believes she's ever wanted in a man. Yet she appreciates that he makes her survival possible and that he provides small acts of kindness. When she meets someone who reminds her of her past life, she is drawn towards him. This results in a major confrontation in which she must choose to succeed in her new life or to run trying to find something that represents her past. This is a little darker story and it represents a very strange world. However, it's very well written and and the premise of adjusting to a new reality and a new vision of who you might share that reality with, is presented in a compelling storyline which I very much enjoyed and recommend.

I did not like this story
The idea is great and I was all for it however what killed it for me was Emmy, the h.
She is passive agressive all the time, she signs up to be in stasis for many years after the death
of her husband , trying to evade the mourning process, you can see right here what kind of a girl she is.
She wakes up, not very well explain the how or how long she was in stasis, only to be rescued by an alpha, she is most of the time planning how to escape, which is a laugh, how can you PLAN a escape when you really don't have any reliable information, all she has points to you better enjoy what you have, instead she fantasies about escaping and calls it planning.
There are no redeeming qualities about her, she fakes a depression and please do not call it a depression because in a real situation there is no switch you flip so it fits your needs, she just does not talk and sleeps all the time, hiding in this fantasy worl and then the brother of H, after seeeing this is very likely to think that he can do better as a mate and tries to rescue her from her brother, dying in the process, all she does is cry wolf, and say she was tricked ... really ?
What an awful character. H could do so much better with any other omega

This had a lot of potential but unfortunately, a lot of things were skipped and glossed over to the point that it was difficult to connect.

I loved all the dubcon and the reluctant/forced sexual nature of the relationship, I loved many of the sex scenes (didn't like the barb aspect of it though), and I loved Emmy's persistence to fight and reject and escape. But I didn't understand the cause of her depression, and the whole conflict/climax happened at the speed of light.

The pov kept changing instantaneously and the characters both changed so drastically in the epilogue that they became like different people. Everything was too quick and I don't understand why it wasn't possible to just write a decent full-length novel that fleshed out the world, the characters, and the conflict. I have no idea what battle the H was fighting. I have no idea what his brother's motivations were considering he didn't seemed ruled by his urges the whole time before the climax (he seemed smart in trying to trick Emmy with a carefully thought through plan, but not smart enough to not try and bond her in front of his brother?!). Considering the price of this book, this feels like a money grab. Won't be continuing on.

Good read

This was a fairly good read...up til the end. Spoiler alert!

I really couldn't get behind emmy's depression. If she were to have had a depression, I feel as though she should have had it sooner and not over something like him noticing she didn't get her period. Also from that last paragraph and the entire epilogue felt like someone else other than the author wrote it. It felt so rigid and filler I almost was shocked. It was like bad play acting. "Go to your room and think of what you did"?! Seriously? I cant even with that. It's like the characters were suddenly rewritten and nothing felt like the same story. It strongly detracts from the good albeit shortish story! This story has good qualities and good bones but I was so thrown by that I had to write this feedback. Anyway, sorry this is long winded but I felt that strongly about it. Still a good read and would recommend it.

Vaudt and Emmy

She woke up an unknown number of years in the future after being in stasis. Alone in a familiar place that is so unlike it was when she began her deep sleep. Captive to a man whose name she learns from a third party, she learns she is meant to be bred. Her sole purpose in this strange, dangerous place even as she proves her worth in other ways. That's not the life she wants; she wants to be free of him. False hope and betrayal threaten the lives of all in the village. He will save her for she is his Omega.

This is the first dark romance I have finished and my first Darkverse ever. Vaudt is rough with Emmy right from the beginning, softening when she became dejected. I liked that she used her knowledge to her advantage in this strange time where names mean nothing and people don't read anymore. One thing - if his mom could read, why didn't she know the uses for the drugs locked away in storage? Hmmm.
