The central character (the narrator) is going through disenfranchised grief. He is mourning the death of a possibility, a hope. It's very subtle and implied. There is a sense of melancholy around the Ghat. Then there is the literal death of another character.

This one is Mahim Bora's masterpiece. I love how tea gardens are always a background character in most of his stories.
