I really don't understand the hype for this book. "And Then There Were None of the 21st century"? Haha I don't think so. The mechanics of how-do-they-do-it are the best part of this book, but other than that, this book is full of unnecessary sexism and mansplaining. The author unnecessarily describes the female main character's boobs on many occasions and it doesn't lead to anything at all, romantically or story-wise. Describing boobs just for the heck of it, like the author can't resist being a weirdo about a person's anatomy.
Characters here are like flat archetypes with no dynamic whatsoever. It's so hard to distinguish between them sometimes because they all blend together as a group of weird male researchers and one token slutty female.
Also, the thing with weird paragraphs? I still don't get the point. If anyone does, please explain because I kinda wanna know.
2.25/5 This book is fun, but I don't love this book. It's have too many flaws that I can't even give them the average score... So below will be my thought on this book (which I try to include some spoiler as least as possible). I haven't write a review for so long, so please don't mind my ass writing.
# Plot I might say that this is one of the strongest point in this story. The author is doing the research pretty good (I think). This book is gonna be focusing on science, especially 'Chemistry' which the worst one out of three, just kidding. The plot is the thing that keep me up with this book.
## The Investigating The investigating part is the plot that i like the most. We will try to figuring out what was happened to the 'Jellyfish crew' with our 2 detectives the clues will keep popping up for us time by time. It's fun to try to think about the case with them, and trying to understand the chemistry process that the author try to told in the book (I don't even know if it's reliable, but I'll just trust the author).
## The what was happened And for the 'Jellyfish Crew' side we will see on 'what has happened' on the Jellyfish ship. This part is the **only** part that I can see why they are calling this book the '21st century And Then There Were None'. The paranoia, the 'AMONG US' things, and also some of the murder that low-key remind me of ATTWN. It's this part fun? I might say, it's more just bland... This part just be here to reveal what was happened. The trilled in this part that supposed to be here, is not even do the thing.
# Character The character in this book is not bad, but not good either. It's just 'yeah' for me. Most of the characters are don't have any of the characteristic. I can see that the author trying give them a personality, but I don't think the result is good... The characterize in this book can be categorize to 2 type.
## Forgettable Character First, forgettable character. I can say that **All** of the 'Jellyfish Crew' or the researcher (I don't know what they were called in ENG) is forgettable. They got their trope and the execute is pretty bad. There is 'the pretty girl who's like attention', 'A looking like a good guy but nah', and more (they are that forgettable LMAO). there not really much to say, I'm just gonna say that other than the next type of character, they all are forgettable.
## TOO MUCH TROPEY Now, this is what I wanted to talk about. I don't hate when characters have trope, it's can help reader easy and fast to digest of what these characters are. But sometimes, it's was done pretty bad. Our main detectives Maria and Ren. Maria is the hotted-head girls who is not good with *thing that uses knowledge* but have a great intuition. And Ren is the sidekick who is a cooled-head and smart guy (That pretty much all of his personality). This might seem pretty much like the first type we have talking about, **BUT** the author given them these characters to a max level that they can be. It's become *too much*. The author focusing too much on Maria the 'not good with thing that uses knowledge*'. He make her don't know anything about the science (including some most basic) including other things too!, just to make her keep yelling, and have Ren explain to her what that things she don't know are (for some reason he know everything). Then she just figured something out at the at of each chapter. It's too much that make her become a dumb character, which is sad, I think he can do it better.
# Writing I don't hate how this book is narrated. I like that we get to switch between two scene, and see what are the police are thinking compared to what was really happened. But there is also a lot of flaws that contain in the writing.
## The revealing culprit I think this part is not bad. It's fun and have a reasonable explanation. The little bad part is pretty much all of the mystery is got explain at the last chapter (55 pages). Which can be excited, but it's only give me that exciting for just a few pages. Some of the revealing is making me go wow, but some also just okay. So, overall the pacing of the story progression can be fun and exciting, but some part also too long, and that making it become boring. ## Unnecessaries & Sexualizing This book can be a lot shorter. Some of the talking and description is unnecessaries and have nothing to do or affect to the plot. **Especially** the females description. There will be 3 females characters in this book that will have a plot significance, and for some reason, the author give them a *exhausively* details about them. Their body shape, face, boob-size, and for a male character is just 'Oh, this guy have black hair and wear glasses'. It's okay give a detail about particular character, but not when you sexualize them. 3 of them got written so bad that make me don't like this book. First girl, our detective, she got sexualize a lot. I will give some example: The author describe she's not dressed properly and her cleavage is shown just for the spicy, or the guy told her she need to be more beware of herself (because he saw her inner thigh/ underwear?). The other girl got seen as just a slut/pick me girl (???). The last girl is the victim, and how to make it's more tragic??? make her get raped... Yeah, I think the author seems to hate women or just see them as a sex object.
I am not shading the author, but the writing is giving me this opinion. He sexualize the female characters too much and the male just got normal treatment for some reason. If the author given these description to male character too, I might be more okay than this because at least it's might mean that he just love given details to his character.
P.S. His dialogue is weird sometime T-T. Like, why is this guy talking in a paragraph writing. # Overall I'm not despise this book. It's a fun read but I don't like this book. It's also have some part that make this book got lower score than it's should be. You can read this book if you are interested in the sci-fi 19xx part, but would I recommended this book to others? No.
Feels very chuunibyou especially the way the two detectives are written (sarcastic man and a hot-headed tsundere woman lol) The killer is in no way believable and it seems like the author spent his time coming up with a cool trick more than coming up with a deep, believable and interesting characters. None of the characters are likable or relatable and you don't really feel any attachment to them. The manic pixie dream girl trope strikes once again, and not to mention rape trope because of course a girl has to be raped since that's the worst possible fate for any female character *sigh*
I bought the Thai version and I hate HATE HATE HATE the fact that they made it looks like the book is printed in Japanese format (reading right to left) but turns out it's just the cover. To read the book, you have to start from the backcover. Ugh.
Nice tribute to And There Was None, yet kept its own merits. Beautifully structured, the novel delivered exactly as it was meant to. The main characters are, however, thin and pale, while the nice touch was in fact achieved elsewhere in the book. (So hard not to become a spoiler if I had to dig into details to elaborate this).
Overall 3 stars for the first half and 4.5 to the concluding part. Very neat and clever attempt at genuine detective plot in the most old fashioned way, yet with a nice twist. The core mystery is so intriguing until it’s explained perfectly and logically.
+ ในบรรดานิยายสืบสวนที่คล้ายกับ and then there were none ที่อ่านมา 3 เล่ม (and then there were none, บ้านสิบเหลี่ยม, แมงกะพรุน) ชอบ and then there were none สุด จบ ทริคอีก 2 เล่มมันไม่ทำงานกะเราอะ
