Written by the author of many romantic stories, this is an epic historical novel that uses the stories and experiences of her youth in the Afrikaans community in South Africa. Jakkalsdrif, the farm in the novel, is one of the farms where she spent her childhood.
In the genre of The Thorn Birds (by Colleen McCullough based in Australia), this book follows one family through 3 generations of life in a hard-scrabble farm in South Africa. The issue of willing the property through to the "right" person is of great importance to this family. However, the day-to-day details are what intrigued me to this story. The original meeting between Marcus and Petronella was teetering on the impossible, but once I decided to "suspend my disbelief" about that issue, the book carried on well. Although not as fully rounded as The Covenant (by James Mitchener), Far Forbidden Plains does similarily delve into the Boer War, and the Afrikaans language and people, and the religions as it affects the daily life in a difficult location.
