What a heartwarming story with wonderful characters, a different kind of storyline, and a fabulous setting! First of all, I must applaud Lee on including an autistic character, who in my opinion absolutely stole the show. Sydney was such a lovely girl, and once people gave her the right opportunities, she was able to shine – just like we should give those who are different in our own lives a chance to shine. For me that’s what this story was all about. Rudy and his mother knew exactly how to act around Sydney, and how to treat her. Not only was it a surprise for McKenna, but it was for me too. There were so many special moments between Sydney and Rudy, or Sydney and Rudy’s mother. It really was my favorite part of the book.

Now I do want to touch on the romantic part. In my opinion the story for McKenna could have gone it two different directions (of which I cannot totally disclose due to spoilers). I will say that it did go in the direction I assumed it would, however had it gone the other way, I think I would have been just as happy. How amazing that this author could of had two potential storylines, but God directed her on one direction and that’s what she went with. Lee did a beautiful job of making Rudy’s character. Do I think there are a lot of gentlemen out there like him? Not so much, but it was nice to have the example there – if any guys happen to read this story.

Here’s the moral of the story folks – follow God’s leading. When you do, the story will always end well. Also, don’t forget to show grace and love to those who are different, plus their family members! I cannot stress this enough, and wish there were even more Christian fiction books with disabled and/or autistic characters in them. It’s such a wonderful reminder of how we ought to treat others.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a fantastic debut novel from an author to watch. There was so much to love about this story: a struggling single mom, a kind and thoughtful hero, and a beautiful setting (both the Oregon coast and Alaska's fishing communities). What captured me most was author Patricia Lee's beautiful descriptions of McKenna's autistic daughter, Sydney. This novel is thought-provoking and touching. Not to be missed.

An Anchor On Her Heart by Patricia Lee is a most delightful contemporary Christian novel about love, friendship and our faithful God. It is the first book in the Mended Hearts series and I cannot wait to read the subsequent books.
The novel concerns the sea and a community. The sea is wild and untamed. There will be times when a rescue is needed. This reminds the reader that God rescues us from our situations. We just need to cry out to Him.
Sometimes God is quiet. “She implored heaven to hear her cry… God remained silent.” We must never equate silence with absence. God hears our cries and He always moves on our behalf but not always in the ways we expect.
As parents we long to keep our children safe. As they grow older it is not always possible but we can entrust them into God’s hands and cover them with prayer. “From your lips to God’s ears.”
At the heart of the novel is a beautiful six year old girl with autism. She captures the reader’s heart with her mannerisms. Those who understand her needs offer her love, patience and kindness, and are repaid in kind.
God is the God of restoration. He will restore the lost and the broken in ways we cannot begin to imagine.
There is a wonderful community atmosphere that delights the reader as the welcome extends beyond the pages.
This is my first book by Patricia Lee. I shall certainly be hunting out more, more, more.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I wondered how the author was going to pull it off. A married woman who hasn’t seen her husband in months and a hero who isn’t that husband?

Y’all, Patricia Lee managed to not only surprise me but did so without making any one of the people involved the bad guy (or gal). Perhaps that’s because, at its heart, this book is about the love between friends and the sacrifices made for those you care about.

I felt McKenna’s loneliness and frustration as a single parent raising a child with autism. Lee puts the readers in the situation as they experience the challenges and need for answers right alongside McKenna.

Rudy and his mother’s experiences with autism make them such great resources and support for McKenna and Sydney. And just like Rudy, I couldn’t help but fall in love with this sweet little girl.
An Anchor On Her Heart yanked on my heartstrings while leaving me content with the way everything worked out.

I enjoyed this sweet romance that also dared to take an honest look at raising a child with special needs. Although I have never been a single mom, I am a parent of a child with severe autism. This book definitely hit a few emotional chords for me, and it's obvious the author has done her research. The story was a very touching tale of a single mom, abandoned by her husband because he couldn't handle their child's diagnosis, and her journey toward finding fulfillment. I love the way the author took the characters through their journey. It was fun and sweet and touching. It's been a while since I've read Danielle Steel, but in addition to my Karen Kingsbury comparison, this reminded me of the books I have read by Ms. Steel, with a sweeping and winding road toward finding true love.
Also, the imagery, especially with the beaches and fishing boats, was spectacular.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Don't you just love a novel so well written that you feel you are actually present and watching the story unfold? You may never have visited the Oregon coast or Aleutian islands, but you will feel as though you are truly there, while reading An Anchor on Her Heart.
Author Patricia Lee knows how to hold your interest as the chapters unfold. You'll find characters with depth, morals, and integrity; truly refreshing in today's world. It's hard to put this one down. You'll finish the book before you want the story to end!

Congratulations to Author Patricia Lee on her debut novel! If you enjoy romantic Christian fiction, I highly recommend An Anchor on Her Heart, a heart-warming tale of love lost and found. But what added depth to the book tremendously for me, and took it beyond the usual love story, is the very honest and touching portrayal of Sydney, a young girl with autism who grabbed my heart. I loved the setting on the Oregon coast - a favorite of mine with Newport's aquarium - and was intrigued with the descriptions of the rigorous - and dangerous - life of a commercial fisherman in Alaskan waters. If you are looking for a great read this fall, this is a good choice!

AN ANCHOR ON HER HEART by Patricia Lee is the first book in the Mended Hearts series. It’s the heart-warming story of McKenna Nichols that will keep you turning pages as her life, shared with her daughter – “a souvenir from a different life” - unfolds.

Technically married – helped financially but abandoned for over two years in any other way, McKenna has learned to adjust and to depend on her own resources. Not being able to come to terms of having an autistic child, Dane’s trips home from his job in Alaska become fewer and farther apart until he just didn’t come home. McKenna loves her daughter and wants the very best for her, but doing it alone has taken its toll on McKenna to where she really has nothing in her life outside of Sydney and her work – her photography and managing her parent’s business while they are out of the country.

That is until she met Ruby Taylor. Their meeting wasn’t typical. She was on an outing with Sydney taking photos while she played in the sand. When it came to everyone’s attention that a swimmer was in distress from the under tow, although fearful of what she might see, she has a feeling as if she needed to continue to photographic it. It makes her feel a special connection to the swimmer once he successfully makes it back to shore. When he’s thoughtful and kind to her daughter, more understanding than anyone else has been, it seemed destined that a new special friendship was about to bloom. Taking her wedding vows to heart even with distance and being deserted, McKenna knows that friendship is all it could ever be.

Ruby sees some of his sister, who he dearly loved, in Sydney and the attraction to McKenna grows. However, he knows she’s still married and that’s a line he will not cross. He loves the times they spend together and would do anything for the two of them. When a job opportunity comes up in Alaska that he feels the need to take, can he be the kind of friend he wants to be? In the vast fishing industry of Alaska, can he find this one particular man? Can he find Dane and tell him what he’s missing out on – talk some sense into the man? In the process, can he keep himself safe making it back home to his Mother who he knows couldn’t take losing him too?

While he’s away, can McKenna and Livy, Ruby’s Mom, help Sydney to achieve all she possible can? Can they work with her to further her education and to open her up to new things even if they have to use unconventional ways?

AN ANCHOR ON HER HEART is a story of determination, resilience, love, closure, opening up your heart when it’s been shut down for so long, celebrating small achievements, doing what’s right because it’s the right thing to do, true friendship, sacrifices and second chances. Patricia Lee tells an emotional story weaving all these along with a wonderful thread of faith that it can’t help but touch many of your emotions within the covers of this fabulous book, which you won’t be able to put down once you start reading. A wonderful Christian book that I would highly recommend to everyone – and I have! FIVE STAR

An Anchor on Her Heart by Patricia Lee

My rating is 4.5 Stars

Rudy is the ultimate hero. Not because he had served in the military or performed any dramatic rescue but because of his heart to protect. His failure to protect his sister and the failure in An Anchor on Her Heart caused him to hide in his guilt. He felt that he should have done more, not remembering that God’s ways are not our ways, and He doesn’t hold us accountable for not doing what He never intended us to do. (I also love the subtle pun of his name.)

I really enjoyed this book. The conflict that Rudy had over his attraction to McKenna while he knew that she was married was handled so well. Those who know me know that I hate stories that make me hope that married people get divorced or that one of them dies. Yes, I know that there are circumstances that make divorce acceptable in the eyes of the Lord. That isn’t what bothers me. It is the mindset of looking to divorce as a solution and being comfortable with it I object to. I want to keep my heart in the right place regarding the sanctity of marriage. Author Patricia Lee handled the situation in the book so well that she had me cheering for Dane and wondering how she was going to resolve the situation.

My heart broke for McKenna and the way that her heart broke. Though she had friends, she was so alone in so many ways. Her love for her autistic daughter despite the painful struggles they faced was so touching and sensitively written.

In addition to the wonderful spiritual journey the characters went through, this story had such fantastic descriptions of the activities of the fishing boat on the Bering Sea that I could picture them happening. I know so much more now and have a new appreciation for the men and women who perform such dangerous jobs to provide us with fish to eat.

My Thoughts on An Anchor on Her Heart:
This book is so good. It tugs at your heartstrings. As a nurse and mental health specializing one, this book really drew me in. I wanted to clap several times while reading at how wonderful Rudy was. And his mom. Oh wow, I love Rudy’s mom Olivia. She’s just so sweet. How fun to have a great bonus grandma like that!

The author has a great writing style. I was drawn in and before I knew it I’d read half the book. It was only my kids waking up and wanting breakfast that made me realize I had meant to do something besides reading that morning. You’re going to love it!

Characters. Oh my. These characters. They’re to die for. Literally. I would. They have become my best friends. And I have to agree with the Woodstock survivor (giggle) that McKenna’s husband should be painted yellow. I just cannot imagine abandoning my child because they weren’t “perfect”. No one is perfect.

As most know I’m a mom of many. I love kids. Definitely would adopt all the children that need homes if I could. So you could say that children hold a special place in my heart. Special needs children do too. We have adopted a few with what I classify as minor special needs. They’re not members of the hospice and most people wouldn’t know that had any “issues” if I didn’t tell them.

So while autism isn’t something I personally deal with on a daily basis I love how the author decided to portray such a central character as having autism. I loved how well the author did with making it believable and bringing autism to the masses. So many times it’s just a glancing nod towards autism or it’s a nice little character that is very high functioning autistic.

I would say that everyone needs to read this book. It’s a great romance of very realistic proportions. And you might learn a thing or two about autism while you’re at it.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

📚THE STORY📚

McKenna is raising her autistic six year old daughter on her own after her husband left them, unable to cope with the stresses and pressures of raising their challenging child. Now he works on the dangerous Alaskan seas, sending money home regularly, but without any other contact.

Rudy is a marine biologist who splits his time between various jobs along the coast, from working as an observer on fishing boats to science presentations at an aquarium. When he meets McKenna, he instantly connects with both her and her daughter, who he seems to have a magic touch with despite her difficulties.

As McKenna grows closer with Rudy, he resolves to help her find her estranged husband and reunite the family - but this is a challenging task for many reasons. Rudy is a man of faith, however, and he is doing his best to be the "hands and feet" of a God who works all things for good even in the storms of life.

💕THE ROMANCE💕

This is a really uniquely structured romance - given the structure of the book, I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say that Rudy and McKenna ultimately get together, but for most of the plot, they are just friends and Rudy is focused on helping McKenna get back with her husband.

Without spoiling anything else, I'll just say that this is a story about healing, hope, and the twists and turns life takes while we're making other plans. Rudy and McKenna have lovely chemistry as two adults managing their own lives, and it's actually maturity and responsible concern for one another that forms much of the third act's tension. Rudy is wonderful with McKenna's daughter, too, which provides a great backdrop for their relationship to grow in.

✝️FAITH ELEMENTS✝️

Both Rudy and McKenna are Christian and pray often, working to align their heart with God's will and placing their circumstances in God's hands. When tragedies occur, they often wonder why God allowed certain things to happen, but maintain their faithful trust.

📝MY THOUGHTS📝

I thought this was a sweet romance with lots of depth. As someone who works with high needs kids, the depiction of McKenna's daughter and the way the adults support her was really lovely. And the details of Rudy's work out at sea were interesting!

If I were to be 100% honest, in the first few chapters of this book, I wasn't convinced that this would be a good read. While the writing was fantastic, there were two issues that had me questioning it in the beginning. First of all, it started out seeming very much like a romance--- when one character was still married. Needless to say, that didn't sit well with me. The second thing was a little closer to home. As the mother to an autistic child, I am very mindful to how autistic people are portrayed in the media. The idea that a father would leave because their child was 'difficult' had me thinking that this could lean towards that 'autism is a burden' mindset that I fight so hard against.

Despite my initial concerns, I read on and I am so glad that I did. Without giving any spoilers, I was pleased to discover that marriage and the vows taken were very much respected and truly played a big part in the overall story. I think this is so important in a Christian novel, and the way Patricia Lee handled it all was done beautifully. Likewise, I found that my initial fears on the attitude towards autism the story would take was completely off base and while it acknowledged some of the hardships associated with raising an autistic child, it was quite respectful in it's approach. It felt very genuine to the reactions that some might have, not sugar coating but not making it the end of the world either.

The reality is, this isn't a story about perfect people. It is the story of broken people. Some characters make decisions that will make us angry... but then isn't that real life? Overall, it was a heartwarming read and one that I am happy to have read. This is a great start to the Mended Hearts series and I cannot wait to read more.

McKenna and Dane are the parents of an autistic daughter. Dane works in the fishing industry in Alaska and is gone for long periods of time. As the story begins, he has been gone now for two years. His only contact with McKenna is the regular deposits he makes in their account to provide support for her and Sydney. One day she meets Rudy at the beach and is surprised by how well he seems to understand her daughter and is able to relate to her. Rudy is single and attracted to her but quickly lets her know that he is a Christian and has a deep respect for her marriage vows. She admires him for his stand because she has faithfully honored her vows even though she feels all alone and yearns for Dane to return. The book packs a powerful message that every married couple and every parent needs to read. Two significant concepts grabbed and held my attention all the way through the book. First, marriage vows are sacred and must not be taken lightly. Although McKenna and Dane were separated by thousands of miles, they honored their vows. Second, autistic children are valued by God and need parents who will devote themselves to determining what is best for them and following through with it. Truthfully, all children need this but autistic children and other special needs children seemingly require more than others. McKenna was continually learning how to deal with Sydney. Rudy and his mother, Livy, were true friends as they came along side of her to support and encourage. Even through the tough parts of the story, the characters clung to their Christian values providing great lessons for the reader. I received an early copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review.

An Anchor on Her Heart by Patricia Lee is the first in the series, Mended Hearts. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this debut novel. Capturing my attention quickly, An Anchor for Her Heart was written around several topics including autism, spousal abandonment, and reconciliation.

Set on the beautiful Oregon Coast, An Anchor on Her Heart introduces the reader to McKenna Nichols is a young mother of a beautiful little girl is who autistic. Upon learning of the child’s diagnosis, her father began to accept employment in fishing boats in Alaska. The jobs took him away from the family for longer and longer periods of time; the last time McKenna heard from him was over two years ago, although he continued to support her and their daughter financially.

When Rudy Taylor befriends the young mother and her daughter, he finds himself attracted to McKenna but when he finds out she is married, he chooses to keep the relationship at a friendship level, despite his growing feelings of affection.

I found this story to be a breath of fresh air. At this point, in many books one might find on the shelves, the couple may find themselves rationalizing reasons to begin an affair; McKenna remains faithful to her marriage vowels and Rudy respects those boundaries. Additionally, the author surely has personal experience with children with autism, the public education system, and the challenges faced by parents of children with autism.

Thoughtfully written, this novel explores marital fidelity, grace and one of the biggest challenges facing many today, autism.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Just Read Tours and am not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions therein are solely my own, and freely given.

This story pulled me in like a riptide and tossed me like waves on the ocean. The emotions are raw, the issues very real, and Ms. Lee does not make light of them, or downplay the reality of a child with special needs.
That Dane chose to leave rather than stay when his daughter was born gutted me. McKenna’s devotion to him was admirable—but maddening. That she honored her marriage vows was beyond honorable.
The setting—the Pacific Northwest and Alaska—were as much a part of this story as the characters. I was fascinated with the aspects of the fishing industry, and have a new appreciation for the men who make their living.
The attraction between McKenna and Rudy was as tumultuous as a storm on the Bering Sea—and as treacherous. As a reader, I wanted to see them get together. As a Christian I applauded them both for honoring God’s Word. The tension was taut and sometimes unbearable.
I did not raise a child with special needs, but I was a single mom and I could identify with McKenna too well in some of her deepest struggles. I appreciated Ms. Lee for portraying McKenna in such a realistic light.
I cheered, I scolded, I cried. And I surely adored Sydney

The Oregon coast setting is refreshing, and since I’m a native Oregonian I like to “see” the familiar places. This touching story revolves around a mom pulling single-parent duty with a challenging daughter, who suffers from autism. McKenna’s husband works the fishing boats in Alaska, and she hasn’t seen him for two years. Her parents go on a world tour, so she’s back in her hometown managing the family art gallery. Friends help her survive and keep her sanity amid the challenges life brings, especially one new friend, Rudy, and his mother, Livy. The setting switches between Newport, Oregon, and the Bering Sea in Alaska. I enjoyed the emotion-packed tale—the characters seem so real. Great job for a debut novel. One small complaint, though, is that the author said Sydney is autistic rather than that she has autism—it shouldn’t define her. My daughter, a teacher with special ed training, calls me out when I say someone is autistic. Also, children should be encouraged to do good not be told they are bad or good—it’s the behavior that is. That said, I look forward to reading the next book in the Mended Hearts series. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

Patricia Lee grabs your emotions in An Anchor for her Heart. Be prepared to feel anger, sadness, loneliness, and happiness with McKenna as she navigates raising an autistic child alone because her husband couldn’t handle the situation. Patricia Lee has woven knowledge from her family circumstances into the plot - an autistic daughter and a son who worked as an observer biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service. The characters in the story are believable, probably because Lee writes what she knows. As the story unfolds readers will wonder how the story will end - there are several possibilities. I found the ending to be satisfying although I hope there is more to their story in books yet to come.

If there is an autistic child in your life or if you enjoy sweet clean romance, you may enjoy An Anchor for her Heart.
I would not hesitate to place An Anchor for her Heart in my k-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for secondary students.

Well-written and thoughtful story

In the first couple of pages I had a few questions as the story started. The author does a great job drawing readers in with her portrayal of Sydney, an autistic child. It works well to have Sydney as a major, yet non-point of view, character. The scene with Dane and Rudy on the ship was also very realistic, as while I was reading the book, my husband relayed a similar conversation he’d been part of—not the setting, but the way the two interacted. One of the things I liked most about this story is that it’s not predictable. Readers have to admire Rudy for the way he puts his own wishes aside to help reunite a family. Rudy’s mother is another strong non-point of view character who adds heart-warming depth to the story. Patricia Lee skillfully draws bits and pieces from her own life experiences to create an entertaining and thought-provoking story.

An Anchor on Her Heart is the story of a struggling young mother, McKenna, who's been abandoned by her husband and is trying to raise her young, autistic daughter alone. McKenna is befriended by a grandmotherly friend, Livy, and her son, Rudy, whose striking good looks are matched by his kindness and integrity. While there is an attraction, McKenna and Rudy keep their relationship to friendship, and McKenna is determined to find her husband who is aboard a fishing vessel in the Bering Sea. This novel puts the reader in the midst of tossed, dangerous fishing vessels and gives a lot of insight into America's untamed Northwest and the commercial fishing industry. A heartwarming read reflecting integrity and hope.

This book caught my attention on the first chapter and hard to put down after that.It contained love, mystery and so many challenges to overcome,it showed how faith can win and help us deal with life s ups and downs,God's plan is always being decided but we need to hold on and wait for his revealing of what he wants,.McKenna was so faithful in waiting for her husband, she never gave up on him,it took a tragedy to make her finally realize that it was time to start a new life with a person that loved her and her daughter and could deal with daughters handicap.I highly reccommend this book

Know you will enjoy all the faith and love that is shown with this wonderful family that never gives up

I loved two things about this Christian romance. Raising an autistic daughter on her own gave McKenna real life challenges to conquer. Seeing men in her life react to these challenges revealed their inner character. So this romance was not driven primarily by physical attraction and feelings. That comes as a welcome contrast to most Christian romance.

The author also dealt with the situation in a Biblical way, when McKenna finds herself deserted by her husband, but feels the loneliness and need for support.

Besides that, this was an interesting book I enjoyed reading. The characters were great. Though the second half of the book went on longer than necessary and I felt could have profited by tightening the word count.

Very touching wstory..

I greatly enjoyed the very real challenges this books characters represented. I found them each to be well created and members of my circle. I climbed into this novel from the beginning. Thank you Patricia Lee for such out of the box thinking.
Working the past 5 years caring for a dear friends special needs daughter I appreciated the alternate reality of McKenna and Sydney. Special in her own way and no less valuable, Sydney came alive for me. As a previous single mother I relate to McKennas struggles in trying to be and do it all, alone.
Thank you Ms Lee

A beautiful heartwarming story written by this new author. The characters were well developed, believable and endearing. This story touched my heart as we have an autistic grandchild, on the high end of the spectrum, and what an encouragement to me to read the story and then the author’s comments as to the success of her daughter. I checked out the website for her card making business, she is a talented artist. Praising God for bringing this book into my reading list and His encouragement for the future of our beautiful granddaughter and what she may accomplish in her life. Thank you Mrs. Lee for writing this book.

I love reading a sweet romance with lots of adventure and this one definitely fits the bill. Set in the Pacific Northwest, Mckenna is (a somewhat?) single Mom of an autistic child and only with the friendship and helpful insight of a certain mother and son did she learn to navigate the waters of autism. As McKenna's life takes some twists and turns, Author Patrica Lee weaves an interesting story. "An Anchor on her Heart' will reel you in from the start to the end. A very Good Read indeed!

I think this author is new to me. I thoroughly enjoyed, not only the wonderful story line, but the style of writing as well. I felt totally absorbed into the Christian mindset of life as it truly is; a very realistic, mature and heartfelt journey. I am definitely going to read more by Patricia Lee, who can touch one's soul.

A fisherman love story

This book was so awesome. It is about an Austin little girl. God brought a wonderful guy into the life of this little girls life to help her and love her mom. If you have ever been around an Austin child you will dearly love this book. Hard to but down.

I enjoyed this novel of a young mother struggling with raising an autistic daughter by herself. The author's writing was informed by many of her own experiences raising her own autistic child. In spite of the difficulties, the story was sweet. I gave it only four stars because I felt the ending was a bit rushed, skipping what I felt would have been good scenes.

Inspiring book

This story gives hope to those with autistic children. Rudy and Livy played an important role in Sydney's life for her learning. McKenna as a mother endured a lot of pain and survived. Her husband Dane abandoned her because of their autistic daughter. Fear and frustration can do that to a person.

I started reading An anchor on her heart and I couldn't put it down, from the first page I was entranced until the last page with the story of Rudy, McKenna and Sydney. Loved this book
and would recommend it to my friends. Ready to read book 2 of Mended Hearts Love calls her home.
