All This While F*cking: Sex, Self, and Social Stigma in the Modern Age

Rate this book
All This While F* Sex, Self and Social Stigma in the Modern Age is an autobiographical account of the years the author spent living in Brooklyn and dating, compulsively, off Tinder. In the process of meeting and sleeping with an impressive diversity of strangers (approximately 200 dates, 100 one-night stands, and 1000's of joints), she is ultimately forced to meet and go to bed with herself—first on the page, and then in practice. The resulting memoir is uncensored, humorous, and self-satirical, revealing an unexpected brand of honesty, both visceral and unyielding, that means everything to our collective evolution in the Western world.

New York City forms a colorful, energetic, impulsive, and often polarizing backdrop for the narrator’s life, an out-of-the-box “tomboy" who moves from her sheltered hometown to the gentrifying neighborhood of Crown Heights, living with her roomies as the only “white girls” on the block. She finds community while working in the “literary mecca” of the Strand Bookstore, before realizing that the bohemian lifestyle lost long ago to capitalism. She starts working in content acquisitions for an entertainment company during the day, swiping for connections come bedtime and battling parasomnia by night--all while commuting everywhere by bike and refusing, always, to ride the subway.

A cautionary tale for a changing world, this story is about a system-buster on a mission, writing for a world willing to listen. Seeking to capture the period of socio-economic transition during the years of 2012 to 2016, the narrator holds back nothing in revealing an array of environ(mental) health issues that crack the spine on the corresponding cultural implications for millennials and generation-Z. There are things that we don’t talk about, but this book speaks openly and honestly those stigmas and secrets. That said, if you don’t like books, just think of this as a super-long text that you can download and read on your phone.

If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is if I enjoyed this book. It blew me to bits, if you want to know the truth. :) I’ll just tell you that I was airdropped straight into the autbor’s heart. Her varsity honesty will invite you to uncover (and perhaps, speak) your own truth. “This” challenged me to discover the true author of myself, and for this, I’ll be forever in her gratitude.

Couldn’t put this book down! It gives an honest and raw insight into the writers mind, addressing real struggles like mental health that are rarely discussed so directly. You won’t find another book that takes such a straight forward approach to telling a persons story exactly as it happened.

I loved this book for many reasons. Firstly, Kelsey talks about themes most of us experience yet there rarely seems to be a conversion about them. I love how the author goes there and bares it all. It’s entertaining and captivating. Really great read that had me turning the pages wanting more.

I got this from the Strand my last visit to New York City. It was an interesting read, but could have used more editing or better organization. It was mostly recaps of dates with a little analysis or inner monologue. Drugs play a big role in this book so if that makes you uncomfortable I wouldn't recommend you read it.
