STEVE NILES is one of the writers responsible for bringing horror comics back to prominence, and was recently named by Fangoria magazine as one of it's "13 rising talents who promise to keep us terrified for the next 25 years."
Niles is currently working for the four top American comic publishers - Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse. He got his start in the industry when he formed his own publishing company called Arcane Comix, where he published, edited and adapted several comics and anthologies for Eclipse Comics. His adaptations include works by Clive Barker, Richard Matheson and Harlan Ellison.
Steve resides in Los Angeles in his bachelor pad with one cat. While there's no crawlspace, there is a questionable closet in one corner and no one is quite sure what is hidden in there...but we have an idea.
After a cool start in #1, this one felt very lackluster. There wasn't much happening at all (besides a whole lot going on with the sacrificing dudes). The whole thing seemed very much like filler. However, I'm still interested enough to read the next one.
That escalated quickly and then didn't really go anywhere. Several pages of a wordless pursuit make for boring reading and doesn't up the tension. Appreciate the effort, but really need to step it up in the last two issues.
Disappointing second issue. Pretty obvious story moves. Most of the issue is a hide-and-chase sequence, and the art is confusing -- I can't tell where any of the characters are in their environment or in relation to other characters. Tough to build tension when it's all just a jumble.
I will say one thing for this series, the art is excellent and makes this a very easy read. Wish the story itself lived up to it. Knowing how limited the run is supposed to be now, I'm a little more forgiving of the shortcomings, but I'm still not sure I'll pick up the last two issues.
