While on vacation in South Carolina, Tj Jensen receives a call that her father has been left in a coma after a devastating car crash.
But once back home in Paradise Lake, Tj learns the accident that killed family friend Judge Harper and left her father clinging to life wasn’t an accident at all—someone cut their brake lines.
To make matters worse, her friend and police contact, Deputy Roy Fisher, is working with a new partner who has no intention of letting Tj anywhere near the case.
Facing an investigation more explosive than the annual fireworks show, Tj enlists the help of her best friends to unravel the mystery, all the while navigating a new romance and the thought her father may never wake up.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

You can never go wrong with a book by author Kathi Daley. FIREWORKS IN PARADISE, as with all her books, especially in this series, is very well written. There are plenty of suspects to keep the reader on the hook. I was completely taken by surprise at the reveal. This is a cozy series readers of all mystery genres will love.
Author Kathi Daley sets off a spectacular cozy mystery plot that flows fast with intriguing multi-facets, and combines family and friends while showing why there's no place like home.
T.J. Jensen rushes home from visiting Gull Island, South Carolina, to be at her dad, Mike's, hospital bedside after he's gravely injured in a horrible car crash in Serenity. Kyle, T.J.'s brilliant, handsome, and wealthy boyfriend soon follows her with the rest of the family and their pets. The gang is thrust into an absorbing mystery of what Mike's friend; the ex-Judge Harper might have been investigating that got him killed. I found this cozy sensationally written, and involving true to life-like court cases that could be taken straight from headline news. All the pertinent facts are nicely displayed by the end of the story, and the culprit gets his comeuppance!
I reviewed a digital ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley.
TJ Jensen's family owns Maggie's Hideaway, a lakeside resort, in Serenity, Nevada where the whole family works. TJ, her sisters, Grandpa Ben, friends Kyle and Doc are away for the summer on Gull Island, South Carolina when they get a call that her father has been badly injured in an auto accident that killed his friend, Mayor and former judge, Harper. Her dad, Mike, is lying in a coma in the hospital as her old flame, Dr. Hunter in taking care of him. So the whole group makes their way back home. TJ's cop friend, Roy Fisher, informed her that the accident was caused by a cut in mayor's brake line. So, TJ assists Roy to find who killed her friend and hurt her dad. Kyle joins in when he gets back using his computer skills to investigate. Following up with notes that the mayor had made about some former cases and questioning people about friction within the town council, they set out to find the culprit. And on top of the investigation, it is the fourth of July weekend and all hands are needed on deck to work all of the festivities at the resort. There is a new deputy in town who doesn't like civilians getting involved with police work and this adds some tension between the gang. The clues that they followed kept me guessing up to the end. There is a new romance brewing between TJ and Kyle. They have been friends for a long time so this is a time of adjustment for them and their friends. This a great cozy mystery that I recommend. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Fireworks in Paradise by Kathi Daley, is the 8th in the Tj Jensen Mystery series. While Tj and Kyle along with family and friends were enjoying a camping vacation searching for buried treasure on Gull Island while assisting Tj’s father’s friend Garret Hanford after he had a stroke. When a phone call was received from Hunter Hanson, town doctor for Paradise Lake, Tj’s father had been in a serious accident and his survival was uncertain. With Kyle’s influence, Tj was booked for a flight from Charleston to Serenity on a sold-out flight. A limo picked Tj up after she departed first off the plane and her best friend Jenna Elston was in the back seat of the limo to keep Tj company and to offer comfort to her. Jenna filled Tj in on information provided by Hunter that her father was still unconscious, but that Hunter was doing everything he could to help her father regain consciousness. After Tj stops at the hospital to check on her father, she returns to the resort and is given the news the accident her father was in, had also killed Judge Harper… and it was now thought it was meant to murder the judge with Tj’s dad being an innocent spectator. Will Tj be able to carry on the festivities of the 4th of July as usual while still trying to give her father the support he needs to regain consciousness and remain alive? Will her relationship with Kyle bloom into something more than friends? Only Kathi Daley knows for sure.
TJ Jensen comes home from a South Carolina vacation to find her dad in a coma. He was riding with his good friend Judge Harper when the brakes gave out and the car crashed. The judge didn't make it. It was discovered the brake line was cute so TJ and Kyle decide to investigate. Unofficially, they have Deputy Roy Fisher's blessing but he warns them to be careful because his new partner, Kate, is very by the book and doesn't believe civilians should interfere with police work.
Even though the circumstances were bad, TJ is glad they are back home for the annual July 4 celebration in Paradise Lake. She just feels bad that her dad will be spending it in the hospital instead of right in the middle of all the fun and activities.
In digging up a lot of various information pieces from the judge's files and other sources, TJ and Kyle soon have a list of suspects which they either talk to together or each take one and interview them. In the meantime, TJ's dad is doing well and is getting stir-crazy in the hospital, wanting to come home.
The last TJ Jensen I read was the second book so there have been a few things going on that changed a little between book 2 and book 7 but this book could still stand alone since the author is really good at explaining without going into too much detail. Most of the characters were familiar so it was like visiting some old friends again. The mystery was solved and everyone felt better knowing the killer would be put away for a long time.
TJ rushes home when her father is in a bad accident that has greatly injured him and killed a family friend. At first it seems like an accident but when evidence comes to light showing that it wasn't TJ jumps right in to figure out who was responsible and why. With the Fourth of July week approaching and her feelings for Kyle yet defined TJ has more than she can handle but knows she must move forward. She just can't let it go but the suspect pool is deeper than she thought, will she be able to wade through this mixed up group of people to figure out just who killed the judge and came close to doing in her father. This was an emotional ride that had me feeling as if I were on a roller coaster but I didn't want to get off until the end. It was a terrific whodunit that had me guessing up to the end. I can't wait to find out what happens next to this wonderful cast of characters.
Fireworks are not the only thing in the air. At the end of her last adventure, a working vacation on Gull Island, TJ has an amazing kiss with close friend, Kyle. Then she gets an emergency call to return to Paradise Lake. Her father has been seriously injured in an accident and may not survive. Family comes first in every Kathi Daley series. Friendship a loyal close second place with Love snuggling in closely behind. From first book through each addition we love watching the characters grow, develop and mature at their own pace.
This book is very family focused. Having had a good working relationship with local law enforcement in the past, even though TJ has solved more murders than the officials, there is a new deputy in town. One who has her own reasons not to accept help from amateur sleuths. I see her and TJ butting heads frequently in the future. TJ and Kyle have to put figuring out their relationship on the back burner while they figure out who caused the accident that injured her father and killed a good friend. This gives TJ's former boyfriend, Dr. Hunter, a chance to reflect on what he may be missing. The murder investigation seems to be moving forward until TJ's dad awakens from his coma and remarks that murder may not have been the motive. That allows for many more suspects. So many variables in play.
This book is a mixture of emotions and relationship issues and dealing with change. If you have lost a loved one you may find yourself unexpectedly tearing up. The ending is quite exciting and dangerous. I accepted this book through Netgalley for review.
Fireworks in Paradise is my absolute favorite in the series so far. It was such a good story and it was so well written that I forgot I wasn't part of the Paradise Lake family. A tragic automobile accident leaves one person dead and another in critical condition. The tragic accident brings TJ back from her summer vacation and puts her in the middle of another investigation. Unfortunately, a new deputy is in town and has a very strict opinion about civilians helping the police. This doesn't stop TJ and she and Kyle work has d to put the pieces together.
I am so excited for the new beginnings happening for TJ, she is a strong, family oriented character and I'm excited to see what else Ms. Daley has in store for this group of colorful characters.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
“Fireworks in Paradise” earns 5/5 Clever Mysteries and Wow Endings!
Immediately following “Treasure in Paradise” Kathi Daley sends us right into another gripping murder mystery. Tj Jensen’s relaxing vacation with family and friends is cut short, interrupted by a frantic phone message from Dr. Hunter about her father, Mike, being in an accident. A devastating car crash has killed a family friend and put her father in a coma. What a way to make this very personal and engaging for fans and newbies alike! Tj will not be left out of this investigation despite her fears that her father might not regain consciousness. Deputy Fisher explains the evidence doesn’t prove ‘accident.’ The brake line on the judge’s car had been deliberately cut making it more obvious that Judge Harper was the intended victim and her father an innocent bystander. A key part of Kathi Daley’s work is she continues to write a clever mystery along with a positive perspective on the importance of law enforcement having her characters, like Tj, working in tandem with, not circumventing, local police. Even though there are opportunities for Tj to go ‘rouge’ or partner with her friends and family, she has a unique talent recognized not ignored by the deputy in charge. Kathi’s style in her mysteries often provides a wide range of motives and ample suspect giving us readers the opportunity to channel our inner detective. Tj works through the clues knowing even though retired Judge Harper must have some typical enemies from his time on the bench, he was also the mayor of the town which widens the suspect pool closer to home with disgruntled business owners and maybe even neighbors. “Wow!” There’s always a very clever solution capped with someone ending up in jeopardy! This story is further complicated for Tj with Deputy Fisher having been assigned a new partner. ‘She’ may not be so tolerant of a civilian actively ingratiating herself into police investigations; Tj will need to rely on her ability to be subtle to avoid being shut out completely. Always playing in the background of Kathi’s work we find family issues, holiday or community events, and a bit of romance. In this story we continue to see the evolution of the Jensen family with a her father’s fiance, the town prepping for the Fourth of July festivities, and in the wake of a very romantic ‘kiss’ Tj and Kyle are trying to navigate through a new relationship. Fireworks all around Paradise Lake, and I enjoyed every bit of it!
"Disclosure: A review copy of this book was selected by me from NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.”
TJ rushes home after finding out her father is in critical condition and a long time family friend is dead after an auto accident. TJ arrives at the hospital to see her father in a coma clinging to life. TJ, of course, is very upset and emotional but when she finds out the accident was not really an accident she is determined to find out who was behind killing her friend and nearly killing her father. After getting everyone else and the animals safely home joins TJ in her search for answers. Can TJ find the truth of who is behind this tragic accident and why without putting herself and Kyle in harm's way?
I really enjoyed this book. This is only the 2nd book of this series that I have read so I was a little lost at when it came to TJ's love life. The only other book I have read in the series was the first book so I was a little behind on who TJ was dating. Other than TJ love life I had no issues in reading this book out of order. This is a great mystery, with fabulous twists and turns to keep you entertained and intrigued until the end. I love the characters and the setting is ideal for the storyline. Author Kathi Daley is a wonderful storyteller. I have very much enjoyed all her books from all her different series and this book doesn't disappoint.
I would recommend this book to all mystery lovers especially cozy lovers. I was provided with an ARC if this book from Netgallery in hopes I would submit a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Fireworks in Paradise is the 8th in the Tj Jensen Mystery series by Kathi Daley. Tj, Kyle, family and friends cut their vacation on Gull Island short, returning to Serenity, after a call from Dr. Hanson informing them that Tj’s Father has been critically injured and a family friend died in an auto accident. Tj quickly learns that there wasn't an accident, rather someone cut the brake line on the judge's car. Tj’s efforts to help investigate are hampered by a new, “by the book” officer. Tj and Kyle start their investigation by exploring the judge's murder by reviewing his old cases. As their search for answers deepens, Tj, Kyle and Deputy Roy realize this incident goes far deeper and back in time. Accident? One murder? Two murders? The ultimate findings are explosive on several levels and packed with the power of an amazing fireworks display. Kathi Daley has delivers another well written plot with multiple twists and turns, well developed characters and a budding romance between Tj and Kyle. Will Tj open her heart to love? A great addition to this cozy mystery series. Ms. Daley has hinted at a variety of opportunities to continue this series into the future. I can't wait to see how the relationships develop! This book can be read as a stand-alone, but readers will appreciate starting at the beginning. Do not miss this exciting mystery.
This is one of my favorite Kathi Daley series. This time around, TJ finally seems to be coming into her own. She has realized how she truly feels about Kyle, and they are slowly growing their relationship into more than friends. There is a great scene where her younger sisters sit her down to talk about that relationship, which is so realistic and believable. Family is of major importance in this story, not just the murder mystery.
Speaking of the the mystery, it is once again very well written, with several suspects, and clues that may lead the reader in more than one direction before bringing you to the realization of the killer's identity.
My only real issue with the book was that this story takes place before the three books I've already read in the Writer's Retreat series, so some of the information in this one was old news. However, with as many series as the author writes, that's a small blip in the scheme of things.
In Fireworks in Paradise, teacher TJ Jensen rushes home from her summer vacation in the Carolinas when her dad is in a car accident that kills their family friend Judge Harper. There are multiple layers of mystery in this one, finding out who killed the judge and why. Plus, TJ's relationships (family and otherwise) are growing and changing, and that's the best part of the book. This is a good, solid, cozy mystery.
Fireworks in Paradise is the eighth book in Kathi Daley’s Tj Jensen Mystery series and is an excellent read. Ms. Daley is an amazing author who captures her reader’s attention with intriguing mysteries, well-plotted storylines, and affable characters. There are lots of twists and turns and a long list of potential suspects. The characters are well developed and the story flows along at a steady pace. Even though tragic events and murders occur in this book, there is still a lot of focus on family, friends, and community. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a well-crafted cozy mystery.
Tj Jensen, Ashley and Gracie (her two half-sisters), Kyle Donovan (her best friend), Ben (her grandfather), Stan Griffin (a family friend), and their dogs and cats are enjoying a summer getaway on Gull Island, South Carolina. When she receives a message that her dad, Mike, has been in a devastating car crash that put him in a coma and killed former judge and current mayor, Harold Harper (a family friend), Kyle makes travel arrangements for Tj and she rushes back to Paradise Lake while he and the others stay on the island until he can get everyone home. Tj soon learns car crash wasn’t an accident and is determined to learn who tampered with Harold’s car. Tj and Kyle have a good working relationship with Deputy Roy Fisher and they team up to start searching for the person responsible, but he has a new partner, Kate Baldwin, who is a strictly by the book person so Tj and Kyle must conduct their investigation quietly. Tj balances the investigation with taking care of her family, helping Rosalie (Mike’s fiancée and the local veterinarian) with the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations at Maggie's Hideaway, and figuring out her new romantic relationship with Kyle.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
“Fireworks in Paradise” is the eighth book in Kathi Daley’s Paradise Lake Mystery series, but it is possible to enjoy this book without having read the previous books. The author provides quick background comments in the context of the storyline to fill in anything needed from the previous books. Since previous story lines are woven into this book, new readers might want to go back and pick up a couple of those previous books rather than spending a few chapters sorting out all the players.
All things are not happy in Paradise Lake. The upcoming Fourth of July should be a busy time at Maggie’s Hideaway Resort with the Star-Spangled Spectacular bringing visitors from all over, but the celebration has been darkened by a devastating car accident that killed Judge Harper and critically injured Tj Jensen’s father. In fact, it was not an accident at all, but murder.
Tj and her friend Kyle Donovan are self-proclaimed “freelance consultants” trying to find out what happened, despite the reluctance of local law enforcement to accept their help. Their search uncovers possible injustices from the past that mighty point to the revenge killing of the Judge.
The story is written as a first person narrative, so we see everything though Tj’s eyes. We get to know the people around her as she knows them. Her search for the killer is intertwined with the day-to-day activities in Maggie’s Hideaway. We agonize with Tj as she struggles with family and personal relationships. Clues to the murder slowly come together, piece by piece, but not without drama and trauma.
Strong, well-developed characters are a trademark of the entire Tj Jensen series. We like Paradise Lake so much that we are willing to set aside its “history” of crime, something that would send us running and screaming from any other resort. Instead embrace the residents of Paradise Lake as if they lived next door.
Daily hints of things to come as Tj’s little sisters wonder how they fit into Tj’s life and are curious about the parade of boyfriends who used to come over but are no longer part of not only Tj’s live but theirs as well.
“We love Uncle Kyle,” Gracie added before I could answer. “We would miss him if he stopped coming to see us.”
Will the future bring “A Wedding in Paradise”? Time will tell.
I received a copy of “Fireworks in Paradise” from Henery Press, Kathi Daley, and NetGalley in exchange for my impartial review. This is an entertaining book to read without any headache-producing stress. Everyone loves Paradise Lake and the people who live there.
T.J. Jensen leaves Gull Island in a big hurry, leaving her two sisters, grandpa, Kyle and the animals behind to organize the care of the resort and quick flights home for all. Her father is clinging to life after a suspicious accident kills their good friend Judge Harper and injured him severely. The investigation is slower than T.J. would like, and computer expert Kyle joins Deputy Roy Fisher and T.J. In collecting possible suspects and systematically ruling them out, while she also sees to the care of her family and the resort. There are twists and turns that seem to point at one suspect or another, rule them out and bring them back under suspicion. This is a very enjoyable cozy with realistic situations and characters. I requested and received an ARC from NetGalley because I've read Ms. Daley in the past and particularly her Zoe Donovan series.
In the beginning we find TJ rushing back to Serenity from her trip to Gull Island to be with her dad who has been in a horrible car accident. When TJ finally arrives she finds out it was no accident that left her dad clinging on to life and a family friend dead. TJ and Kyle team up with officer Roy to start searching for the person responsible. I LOVE this entire series, it just keeps getting better and better. I literally could not put it down!!
Kathi Daley has an amazing way of bringing you into the stories she tells, she makes you feel at home with the characters and everything that is going on with them. Do yourself a favor and grab this book, you will not be disappointed.
I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley for my honest review.
To get the most out of this book I suggest you read previous books in this series. I find this series is more about relationships than mystery, though there are investigations involved.
Tj is called home when her Dad (Mike) has a serious car accident landing him in ICU and his friend Judge-Mayor Harper is killed.
Kyle Donovan arranges to get everyone home from Gull Island back to Serenity in time to help Rosalie with the upcoming July 4 celebrations at Maggie's Hideaway. Tj teams up with investigating officer Roy to solve the crime before anyone else is hurt.
Hunter, Jenna, Rosalie, Ashley, Grace and Grandpa Ben all play integral parts in this episode as Tj considers at a future with Kyle.
This was such a fun book! I read through it quite fast because I just HAD to know what happened! If you're in the mood for a light-hearted mystery read then this is the perfect book for you!

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. In this installment Tj finds herself right in the middle of a family emergency and it will take all of her faith and family love to get through it. She will have to rely on her family and friends to solve this mystery and bring her family back together again. I love the tight knit group that she surrounds herself with, they are all caring and loyal. In all of her books, family and friends are very important and this book is no exception.
The mystery was carried on well throughout the entire book. There were plenty of clues to sift through and suspects to consider. And as usual, there is more than one mystery to solve and they both are woven together like a beautifully made sweater.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in creating a cozy small town setting and I would love to visit the places that she creates.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This book is a great addition to an already fantastic series.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Henery Press for the opportunity to read and review this book (and for granting wishes).
Kathi Daley has done it again with book 8 in her Tj Jensen Mystery series. I love that these books can be read as stand alones. I have read most of the series and have enjoyed every book.
Fireworks in Paradise is the 8th book in the series. Tj is still in Gull Island South Caroline when she receives a call her beloved Father has been in a terrible accident and may not make it, and family Friend Judge Harper was killed. She rushes back home to stand vigil over her Father. Once home she finds out the accident was not an accident when they discover the brake lines to the car has been cut. Tj of course dives right into the investigation even though the new police officer does not want her help.
I love that the romance of Tj and long time friend Kyle is actually moving forward. Every book needs a bit of romance. The book does not center of the romance but I love the sweetness of it. Tj and Kyle have been awesome in the last few books as friends now I can see them going far as lovers as well.
Tj Jensen flies back home from Paradise Lake upon hearing that her father was badly hurt in a car accident in which a friend was killed. While worrying over her father, she and Kyle join forces to try to find out answers to the accident that wasn't an accident. This is a very exciting story that kept me on my toes. It was wonderful seeing the closeness between the family and friends and their love for each other as they helped one another through this tragic situation.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley.
Tj Jensen finds herself rushing back home when she gets a phone call telling her dad has been in a terrible car accident and the driver died. The driver a ormer judge and temporary mayor was a family friend and the brakes were tampered.
She finds herself investigating the case with her friends and the new detective who she clashes with. Will her father survived or will they be another tragedy in the girls’ life?
I loved this eighth in the series. T.J. returns early back to Paradise Lake because she receives notice that her father was in accident and is in a coma. When she arrives home she finds that is no accident and searches for answers. I love the characters and setting, I would love to live in a place like this. The mystery was good and kept me guessing. I will definitely continue on with this series.
Great story. Lots of intrigue. Satisfactory conclusion. Eager to read #9 and see how various relationships develop. Nice for all to be back home. The publisher provided a copy via NetGalley for my voluntary review. I was thrilled for the opportunity as I have read the previous books and enjoyed them. Once I started the book I hated having to put it down. Grateful I was able to read it one day.
Thanks to Kathi Daley, Henery Press, and NetGalley for providing this book for me to read. I was not required to give a review.
I love Kathi Daley's cozy mystery books. She's got several series, and I've read several of her books from the different series. They're each set in a unique setting and have great characters. The Tj Jensen Mystery Series is set in the fictional town of Serenity, Nevada. Her family lives in and runs Maggie's Hideaway, a lakeside resort. I definitely recommend reading the books in order, but you don't have to. I've read several out of order and enjoy them just the same.
In this most recent Tj Jensen book, Tj is just returning from Gull Island (Treasure in Paradise Book 7) after finding out that her father is in critical condition after a horrible crash. When she returns home, she is horrified at her dad's condition. After finding out that the "accident" was not an accident, she sets out to find out who would have wanted to murder Judge Harper. Like all good mysteries, the killer isn't obviously apparent. I like working through the clues along with the main characters in these books.
And speaking of characters, you'll love the ones in this series. I love getting to "know" the characters throughout the books. You'll love Tj who has been raising her younger half-sisters since their mother's untimely death. Tj's dad and grandpa are such great guys. Even though the little girls aren't related to them, they treat them like they are family and love them just like family. Tj's best friends are always around to help when she needs them.
I definitely recommend Fireworks in Paradise and all Kathi Daley books to all my reader friends who like cozy mystery books. They're great escapes! On to the next...
Kathi Daley really knows her work! She writes another story where life, death, love and hate are intertwined in the little town of Paradise. You couldn't put this book down! A clean romance, a murder without gory descriptions, a book full of values and a group of friends trying to solve the murder of a prominent citizen. What else could you ask from a cozy mystery?
This is book #8 in the Tj Jensen series. This series is best read in order to enjoy the storyline. The Tj Jensen series has everything I love in a cozy mystery! Likeable, interesting characters, a really good mystery, some romance (just hinted about), not a graphic or disturbing murder. This book takes place over the July 4th weekend. Tj, sisters, and friends return home to Paradise Lake when her father, Mike, is in a serious car accident. Their friend, Judge Harper, dies in the accident which turns out to not be an accident. Tj begins to investigate the incident. There are a lot of suspects but Kathi Daley does a good job keeping it all clear. I wasn't sure who the culprit was until near the end but there were a lot of things going on to keep it interesting. A very enjoyable cozy mystery! I recieved this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
