Treasure Island - Ann Ward (Adaptor), Robert Louis Stevenson (Creator), Andy Hopkins (Editor), Jocelyn Potter (Editor) (2000) [Penguin Readers Elementary (Level 2)]
Theme: Search for adventure/ The journey of exploration from youth to adulthood/ Quest for self-discovery and inspirational role models/ Fortune and Greed/ Deception, Secrecy, and Trust/ Father figures
Opener: “My father had an inn near the sea. It was a quiet place. One day, an old man came to our door. He was tall and strong, and his face was brown. His old blue coat was dirty and he had a big old box with him. He looked at the inn, then he looked at the sea.”
Summary: Treasure Island is one of the most famous adventure stories in English literature. The lasting appeal of the story is supported by the fact that there are more film versions of Treasure Island than almost any other classic novel. The story, set in the mid-eighteenth century, is mainly narrated by a young boy named Jim Hawkins. An old sailor comes to stay at the seaside inn owned by Jim’s parents. When the sailor dies, Jim searches his belongings and finds a map revealing the location of an island with treasure buried on it. Jim’s friend, Mr Trelawney, buys a ship to search for the treasure. During the voyage, Jim discovers that there are many pirates among the crew, and that they are led by Long John Silver. When the ship reaches the island, a battle begins between the pirates and Mr Trelawney’s men. Jim befriends an old pirate who lives alone on the island and has already found the treasure. After many adventures, Jim and his friends defeat the pirates and sail back to England with the treasure.
Final Review: Had forgotten some of the plot points of Robert Louis Stevenson’s much-acclaimed Treasure Island. This adaptation helped me freshen up my memory. I liked that the book progresses through the story in a plain straightforward way.
1. Level 2 penguin reader 2. 6/30 40min 7/1 40min 3. Treasure, pirates, captain, sail, boy, fight, sailor 4. Let them find the treasure first, Then we can kill them. Now get me some fruit from this barrel. I was very afraid. But then someone said, ' Land!'
when I was reading this part, I was scared too! Because if nobody said land, the boy might be killed by pirates. Many kind of stories save someone's life like this, it's like cheating!
5. This book was easy to read, even though it's level 2. And every chapter have good ending, so it makes me want to keep reading! I hope I can find the treasures like they did.
1. Penguin level 2 2. 05/20=80 minutes 3. sea, pirates, treasure, ship, fights, map, island 4a."I lost myleg and Old Pew lost his eyes." 4b.This passage expressed the pirates appearance. I knew that pirate's work is dangerous and voyage has many risk. Pirates are strong! 5.My image of pirates is cool and have courage. However, they fought and cheat each other for treasure. This act is not cool. I think they have to help and corporate each other!
I really liked this book, even if it could get a bit boring in parts. Stevenson has a cool writing style, and I really liked the main character, Jim Hawkins. It was a great summer book--perfect for reading in a treehouse when its raining.
The Captain kept asking him to " Watch out for the man with one leg " for days and the guy appears to him later and it didn't hit him.. need to know more about Silver. Read a short version and hadn't quite understood his allegiance.. or is it because he simply liked Jim?
It's hard to read and it takes forever to read but, it is such a great book. The author hit it out of the ball park with this book. It is my one of my top favorite books in the world.
