Indra's Net: An international anthology of poetry in aid of The Book Bus

Rate this book
Writers from all over the world generously donated their poetry for inclusion in this international anthology in aid of The Book Bus charity. The Book Bus aims to improve child literacy in Africa, Asia and South America by providing children with books and the inspiration to read them.

The poems explore a wide range of topics and are thought-provoking, funny, celebratory and often deeply moving. All speak to our shared humanity and common human experiences, from split second moments of realisation or understanding to reflections over the arc of a lifetime.

The contributors include the Forward Prize finalist, Beverley Bie Brahic; the inaugural winner of the John Knight Memorial Poetry Manuscript Prize, Vanessa Kirkpatrick; and the winner of the Seamus Heaney Centre Prize, Katherine Towers, who was also shortlisted for the Ted Hughes award and TS Eliot Prize.

All profits from the sale of this book will go to The Book Bus.

Readers will enjoy this varied and accessible anthology, and have the added satisfaction of knowing their purchase is helping to hand on the pleasure and power of language. They will have added another small jewel to Indra's Net.

The Book Bus

One in six adults around the world have come through childhood unable to read or write, due mainly to a lack of books and opportunity to read. The Book Bus was founded by publisher Tom Maschler with the aim of supplying books and making them accessible to children to help get more children reading and therefore be able to make more choices about their own lives.

In 2008 the Book Bus began delivering books to schools in Zambia and working with children to inspire them to read. The Book Bus has opened reading schemes in Zambia, Malawi, and Ecuador where over 100,000 children now have books that are relevant and accessible to read.

I am not much of a poetry reader, but this anthology had several accessible poems I could really enjoy. All profits from this book go to the Book Bus, an organization that delivers books to Zambia, Malawi, and Ecuador where over 100,000 children now have books that are relevant and accessible to read.

There is everything here to engage the reader, from a spontaneous crystalline fire blooming across the window to watching as the sky sucked in its breath, from hands which know the sadness of rock to a gift of water which offers the wet ancient mystery and from how the moon is a half golden bracelet to how rooks flock in rowdy gaggles.

A veritable cornucopia of poetry.

This is a collection of 41 poets from around the world. To be fair, I am one of them. Apart from pushing my own barrow there are many wonderful poems in this anthology. It is one of those books one can return to again and again and find fresh new things each time.
