Texas Lawmen #2

The Lawman's Apache Moon

Rate this book
"No more detours!" That was the promise Angelina Lord made to herself when she accepted a ride from a wedding in Texas, with the best man to her destination in Santa Fe, New Mexico. What could possibly go wrong?

Angelina is focused on one thing–opening a fashion boutique in Santa Fe. What she really doesn’t need is one full-of-himself lawman with his aggravating air of superiority and soul-searing eyes…not to mention heart-stopping kisses…coming to her rescue. If she lets him get too close to the truth, he could bring down the wall she erected around her well-ordered life and her heart.

United States Marshal Jace Blackhawke holds family and traditions as the center of his life. He isn’t part of Angie’s world and she certainly isn’t part of his. Will their differences prove to be too insurmountable in the face of the truth that will not stay silent?

Born and raised in the Lone Star state of Texas, Debra grew up among horses, cowboys, wide open spaces, and real Texas Rangers. Pride in her state and ancestry knows no bounds and it is these heroes and heroines she loves to write about the most. She also draws upon a variety of life experiences including working with abused children, caring for baby animals at a major zoo, and planning high-end weddings (ah, romance!).
Debra's real pride and joys, however, are her son, an aspiring film actor, and a daughter with aspirations to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation. (more story ideas!) When she isn't busy writing about tall Texans and feisty heroines, she can be found cheering on her Texas Tech Red Raiders, or heading off on another cruise adventure. She read her first romance...Janet Dailey's Fiesta San Antonio, over thirty years ago and became hooked on the genre. I really liked this book. It was fun as well as emotional. Loved Jace and Angelina. Two very strong-willed people who're total opposites of each other --She's a hotshot fashion designer from New York City; He, a hotshot United States Marshal from Santa Fe. They meet when their friends Clay and Kaitlyn (MCs of Book 1) get married.

The book opens with Jace going to a bar where his best friend Clay is getting drunk having sent Kaitlyn, the woman he loves to on her way. He drags Clay from the bar and while driving him to his ranch he suddenly finds himself chasing after Kaitlyn who's headed to the New Mexico border because Clay decides he cannot do without Kaitlyn. Using lights and sirens, Jace has Kaitlyn pull the car over to the side of the road. And, while she and Clay are having a heated argument in the middle of the road, Jace has the first glimpse of Kaitlyn's friend, Angelina, who was in the car with her. Both are hit by a bolt of instant attraction.

A week later the two of them are best man-bridesmaid to the happy couple then Clay requests Jace to drive Angelina to Santa Fe as she's planning to open a store out there. On the way, heavy storm causes them to book into a hotel in the only available suite -- the honeymoon suite. As luck would have it, they run into a pastor known to Jace and his family and circumstances has the pastor believing that the two are married. Angelina too, in a bid to annoy Jace, deliberately speaks to him in a wifely manner in front of the pastor, not realizing she's stirring a hornet's nest. Within few minutes of being in the suite, Jace receives a call from his aunt, who's at the mayor's dinner and is very upset to hear the news of his wedding from strangers.

Jace is very fond of his aunt and uncle and never wanted to hurt them. He was nine years old when his mother died leaving him to live on the streets, but his aunt and uncle took him into their lives and raised him up like their own son along with their daughter. As his aunt places importance on the old value system of marriage, he talks Angelina into marrying him. At first, she disagrees, but then agrees when he tells her she'd have help setting up a store without any problems from the locals as his aunt who had just attained a seat at the state level would be able to help her.

Soon, Jace was beginning to see his haughty city girl in a different light. He finds she has a warm heart and was beginning to fit right in with his family. Angelina too, wasn't prepared for the infuriating lawman to be leaving her sweet notes along with her breakfast before he left for work every morning or calling her every night when he was travelling no matter how tired he was just to check if she was fine or wooing her assistants into help plan some awesome surprises for her. A man who could at times make her so angry that she want to throw pitchers of water on him and at times make her laugh. Moreover, she was giving the 'look-at-my-husband-and-I'll-kill-you' eye to his ex who think they can snatch him away from her.

She was also not prepared to be loved and welcome by Jace's family. For someone who was shuttled from one foster home to another until she ran away from the system at the age of 16, their love and concern was overwhelming. It didn't take her long to fall in love with Jace and when her body showed no control beneath his touch, she knew she had to leave, as they belonged to two very different worlds. She's made a name for herself in the fashion world and has erected walls around her that remained secure in the cold business atmosphere, but those walls were crumbling when with the lawman and his warm family. She however didn't think she would be able to fit in with him and his family since she had no family and no roots.

And, her belief solidified when she came across a five year old girl and her brother while waiting for Jace in his office. As Jace had put their parents who were criminals put behind bars, they had to go into foster care, and there was no surety if they'd be in the same foster home together. Reminded of the lonely life she'd led in the foster care, Angelina pleads with Jace to do something so that the siblings weren't separated, but Jace was bound by the court's order. Angelina however read it as he too, like the family court lawyer who called such kids damaged people, thought the same of her. Felt so bad for Jace to come home with a bouquet of roses and find Angelina has gone back to New York.

Their separation was heartbreaking. Could feel their pain and angst. But, both being stubborn wouldn't make the first move. There was a light moment, when Kaitlyn instigates Clay into finding out from Jace, what went wrong between the two. It was Jace's aunt who made Jace understand Angelina's fears of being an outsider.

I preferred Jace as the lawman going crazy chasing bad guys while trying to figure out where his relationship with Angelina was headed. His artist side was a bit mushy for his kind of personality. Nevertheless, he and Angelina made an awesome pair.

The end was nice, but the epilogue was the best, especially the part when Kaitlyn and Angelina squeal after sharing their secrets and Jase and Clay down the hall are wondering what's going on.

Over all it was an enjoyable read.

There are a plethora of stories out about fake marriages to serve one purpose or another, but none that I've read to date stole my heart as did Jace and Angie's story. The personalities of the characters came through in vivid detail...the author's ability to bring to 3D life 2D characters so that they can easily be visualized, demonstrates extreme talent. I've read other books by Ms Holt and I've come away each time with a warm heart and a smile.

With the beautiful backdrop of the colorful landscape of New Mexico, the reader is transported to a place of vivid colors that dynamically change creating a kaleidoscope for the mind's eye. Through Ms Holt's writing, all this beauty is brought to life.

Since this is only the second book in the Texas Lawmen series, if the remaining books are anywhere near the realism of this story, I can't wait to read them.

This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher and NetGalley. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.

I really, really enjoy this series. The characters and story just pull me right in.

I loved Marshal Jace Blackhawke. I love a man that knows what he wants and is true to himself. Once he realized he was in love with Angelina he was prepared to do whatever it took to make her his. He was patient with her and gave her the time that he thought she needed - maybe too much time. But he loved deep and wanted to make it work.

Angelina was an amazing woman. She was a good person that had a huge heart. She just didn't seem to feel like she deserved love herself. Her past made me so sad and it really colored her present. it was not easy for her to come to terms with what she deserved vs what she thought she deserved.

Great story

I wasn't sure what to expect from this author as she is new to me. But I loved this story, the characters, the setting...everything. The author didn't try to solve the issue in 2 pages, choosing instead to give it the time and thought deserved.

Angelina Lord needs to get to Santa Fe, New Mexico as quickly as possible. But it seems her new ride, Jace Blackhawke, the best man from the wedding she attended in Texas has other ideas. When his family learn he has a new woman in his life and believe the pair's relationship is more than it is, Jace will do anything to prove how important Angelina is to him. But as Angelina and Jace do their best to show their marriage is the real deal, it gets harder and harder for the pair to remember that their marriage has an end date. Will Jace be able to convince Angelina that happy ever after can be possible between them, or will Angelina's need to protect herself from hurt send her running from the best thing that's ever happened to her -- love with the right man?

The first book of this series was a delightful read with memorable characters such as Angelina and Jace, so I was really looking forward to reading this book and I've got to say that it was just as captivating and remarkable. The way this story started had me loving the main characters immediately, as Angelina is so focused on getting a new fashion boutique up and running in Santa Fe and nothing will stand in her way. However, plans don't always come to fruition, especially when it comes to men and the reason Jace is determined to do anything for family. Will Angelina go along with his plan? Will she be able to pull off how much in love she is with Jace, even if she's only supposed to be pretending? Will his family be accepting of the heroine?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and I loved every moment the hero and heroine conversed, as the hero can be quite persuasive in getting Angelina to see reason. Jace's family are important to him and he would do anything for them, even if it means deceiving them to show he's happy. Moreover, the heroine is resilient, courageous and I liked how driven she was when it came to her business. Nothing will stand in her way when it comes to her expansion plans, certainly not the hero. I also liked that she was willing to help Jace, even though it's not easy for her to let someone in. While the hero, I loved how determined he was to win Angelina over, even though he knows it won't be easy. Her walls are quite tall when it comes to letting someone in and it's palpable she has serious trust issues because of her past and being a foster kid. I also liked how good the hero was at his job as a US Marshal and that he would do anything he could to get bad guys off the streets.

Overall, Ms. Holt has penned another wonderful read for this series where the chemistry between couple was intense and had me enjoying the way Jace won Angelina over, even though there's a major bump in their growing relationship when it comes to his job, some kids he rescued and whether he would be able to see things from the heroine's point-of-view when it came to their welfare. However, in saying that, I liked how Jace won the heroine back. The surprise he gave her was special and definitely something that would show Angelina how much he cares for her. I would recommend The Lawman's Apache Moon by Debra Holt, if you enjoy the marriage of convenience trope, the fake relationship trope or books by authors Ann B. Harrison, Sinclair Jayne, Justine Davis and Kate Pearce.

Angelina is a high-profile fashion designer from New York City who’s been tossed with Jace following the wedding of their mutual best friends. Despite only wanting a brief stop in Santa Fe to secure her new business venture there, Angelina trips and accidentally falls into a marriage with him. Angelina and Jace must play the perfect couple for the prying eyes of Santa Fe, including his family, but all starts to go awry with the plan once feelings are involved. Suddenly they find themselves in love with their spouse — oh, what horror — but Angelina is not so easily swayed. She doubts the probability of her happy ending and instinctively disassociates from Jace. Jace, on the other hand, realizes he can’t let this one go without a fight.

I liked the characters. Angelina isn’t cold, but she is independent and wards away the hero (somewhat). We love that. Jace is fine, as well. He shares things in common with Angelina that they don’t really connect on, though, at least in front of us readers. Specifically, anyone seen a glass of childhood trauma? Oh right, Angelina drank it all. Too bad Jace was supposed to have some as well.

Other than that, the initial plot behind the marriage is kind of exasperating. They married to save face, basically, in front of a conservative town. Okay. Except, why the jump to marriage? Why not get engaged? Jace’s family was upset they weren’t there for the wedding, anyway. Not upsetting his family was the reason for the marriage in the first place. Seems like he shot himself in the foot there. But then I remembered this is a romance novel. Of course they got married.

Speaking of Jace, he’s Apache, if you haven’t read the title. He is also a lawman. Anyway, with books like these, sometimes authors can get carried away with describing the culture of people of color. The amount of times we’ve heard Latinas are spicy and exotic... but I digress. This isn’t about me. I do think this was done fairly well, especially because it’s mostly from Angelina’s perspective and she tries to be “politically correct.” Every so often she describes him as showing his “Indian” heritage (he made fire without matches and she was like hhhhholy shit, even though, I mean, he is a marshal), but besides that it was okay.

Other than that, this book is a nice read. There are no sex scenes here, sadly. However, I wouldn’t re-read this or keep it on my shelf personally. I do think if the initial blurb attracts you, you should give it a go. Plus it was free.

While I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to have read the first story in this series, Beware The Ranger is not only a terrific story but introduces us to these characters and the roles they played early on in this series. I’m always recommending to read a series in order, but realistically I know that’s not always possible… yet, if you can pick up the first one, it will add so much to your enjoyment of The Lawman’s Apache Moon.

Angelina is finally on the road to her future in Santa Fe where she intends to open shop. Only plans have changed, she’s going solo and while happy for her best friend’s happiness, she’s feeling a tad bit alone right now. Sure there’s a handsome man alongside her making sure she gets to her destination safely… as if she needed the escort. But despite the attraction, Jace is not her man. What started out as helping a friend will soon turn into a much more complicated situation – one that neither Angelina or Jace expected. One dangerous storm, one hotel room available and one beloved relative will make life interesting for this couple who are fighting their attraction for each other. They each hold secrets, can they finally trust someone enough to allow love to grow into something amazing.

While thinking of how to describe this story to you one word keeps coming to mind… vivid. The scenery, the colors, the emotions, the couple themselves… are all vivid and so very easy to picture in your mind. I read a lot, but I cannot remember the last time a story took me so deeply into details and smells, colors, emotions that I could have reached out and touched them. Adding to the mix are the honorable traditions of Jace’s heritage which simply made their story so much more realistic. I would highly recommend The Lawman’s Apache Moon, and the entire series to any Romance reader who love to fall into the surroundings, live in the moment with the couple and find a very satisfactory happy ending for a charming couple.

I actually really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well written and I enjoyed each character's journey towards the other. When they got together I was happy for them and could easily see their relationship as an ever-after one.

So why not 5 stars? Three reasons:

1. The setup of the fake marriage was a little questionable (if Jace knew how quickly gossip was going to spread, why didn't he say anything in the elevator???). I did recover from that quick enough, though.

2. Sometimes I felt like Debra Holt's writing didn't flow as well as it should. There were lots of times when I felt like she had forgotten to say something so she quickly shoved a sentence in before continuing. Her thought processes seemed to jump around a bit. The dialogue was a little like that as well. Sometimes I wondered if a few sentences were missed, as everything seemed to jump.

3. I really don't cope with characters being downright stupid, and there was one moment that had me seriously cringing. Angie is driven to a house and told to wait in the car while Jace goes to check on something. Angie has no idea whose house it is, or why they are there, but she gets out and starts wandering around. I get that. Then she opens a closed gate and goes through into a private courtyard. Starting to cringe at Angie's rudeness right about now. Then she actually goes into the house via the door from the courtyard. OK, really not coping with the downright rudeness of Angie. She still has no idea whose house this is. Sure, Debra Holt needed it to happen so that Angie would make a big discovery, but I just can't believe that anyone who actually do that. It is shocking behaviour.

After so many delays she is finally on her way to Santa Fe, it may not be with her best friend in tow but she is going to continue to follow her dream to open a store there. Angie has a secret about her past few know about and she would like to keep it that way. The closer Jase gets to her the hard it is to protect her heart. Can she come out of Santa fe unscathed or will her heart be in need of healing again? Jase has not always had it easy and he enjoys the bachelor life. When things take a turn he knows he needs to protect his heart even in the temporary situation he talked Angie in. But can he walk away when its all over or will it all be to much for them both forcing him to come clean?

I really enjoyed this series so far, this book does not need to be read in order but should because both are amazing, and you catch up with Clay and Kaitlyn in this book. I really enjoyed the back in forth with both characters they were fun to read and the fun back and forth was super fun, I loved how they tended to "label" each other. I really enjoyed the passion in this book. I will say that there are some indication of adult scenes in this book so it may not be suitable for all ages. I really enjoyed how the author took the time describe the colors of the south west where you feel like you were right there with the characters. This book really flowed well and the story seemed to draw you in, in any and all aspects, it was super fun read and super enjoyable. I can't wait to read more from both this author and this series.

Fashion Designer Angelina Lord was headed to New Mexico to scout a location for her new shop. She is finally on her way, catching a ride with Jace Blackhawk after the wedding of their friends. When they take shelter from a storm, Jace takes the only available room. When a chance encounter with someone from home results in a misunderstanding that shows just how much of a small town Santa Fe is, Jace convinces Angelina that a marriage of convenience is the only way to keep gossip at bay and help with her new business. It will also keep his Aunt happy.
I loved these two characters and the way they work to build a relationship despite their plan to end the relationship when Angie moves on. The way these characters were written brings them alive. I really enjoyed Jace and a look at his family and this heritage. Angie is a character that was easy to love, especially once you found out what makes her tick. These two together are spectacular. There is so much emotion and so much from the past that has shaped these two. The author's descriptions of the area make me want to jump in the car and drive to Santa Fe to experience it myself.
This is my first experience with Debra Holt, and I definitely want to go back and read the first in this series. If it was as good as this one, I don't want to miss it!

I love the opportunity to read and review books by Debra Holt. Her stories always color a landscape of emotional settings with real feeling emotions and events.
In this story, the sequel to Beware the Ranger (d another great book), US Marshall Jace Blackhawk, finds his match in Angelina Lord, a New York fashion designer. Angelina had gone to New Mexico with her friend, Kaitlyn, to find a new location for her designs. Waylaid by Kaitlyn's adventure, Angie is finally getting to Santa Fe but with Jace, best friend to Kaitlyn's new husband, Cody.
On the road to Santa Fe, a strong storm causes Jace and Angie to find a hotel for the night. No problem there but there is only one room available-the Honeymoon Suite. A case of mistaken honor leads them to a quickie marriage of convenience.
You really have to read the novel to get the full story about the marriage circumstances and where it all leads for Angie and Jace. The story is fraught with personal complications, past hardships and self-imposed walls. It is truly a lovely romance.

Debra, you almost destroyed me! I couldn't' breathe in certain areas and I soaked a whole batch of tissues. I did make it to be End! I liked this book. Angie met Jace, a U.S. Marshall, when her best friend Kaitlyn stayed back from helping Angie to get to find her next store. Jace is part Apache and had a bad childhood until he went to his aunt and uncle. He still works Native beliefs. They were caught in a storm and they get married so his Aunt Victoria wasn't hurt. Major Spoiler! They plan to end it. Angie has a big secret. Jace has to go finish a job. She is gone! This area here is where everything tears a lot of Angie's soul. Get the tissues out now! Jace decides to go to Angie, to talk! He uses the Native American way! I was sucked into this story. I hope you will follow me. Don't let this book get away! Enjoy reading this book! I volunteered to read and review.

The Hallmark Channel movie producers should be knocking on Debra Holt’s door any day now. The Lawman's Apache Moon is a wonderful book that would be a delight if they could make the movie true to the book. The descriptive writing is superb of New Mexico, family. The characters too were strongly described so that I had a clear picture of them in my mind. Angelina and Jace especially came to life for me as their characters were revealed to be deeper and more complex than first thought.

Detours may be the best part of life’s journey as Angelina Lord finds in her road trip to Santa Fe. As the book progresses, I fell in love with this area of the Southwest, the people and their ways. Simply a beautiful, funny at times, other times emotional intense story.

I adored nearly everything about this marriage of convenience story. Second in the Texas Lawmen series, the story is actually set mostly in Santa Fe New Mexico. Debra Holt has done a marvellous job of describing what sounds like a beautiful city in a beautiful part of America. I've fallen in love with that part of the world sight unseen both because of the architecture and scenery she has described so vividly and because of the Apache cultural tidbits she has woven through the story.
Jace and Angie are both well developed characters, each with their own set of personality quirks, talents and insecurity. The plot, which is appropriately paced throughout, kept me turning the pages and I'm now looking forward to book number three.

Loved this story, maybe the fact that I once went to Santa Fe and the way Angelina saw it was just how I remembered. I remember wanting to see the houses behind those locked gated driveways.
The way Jace introduces Angie to his heritage and family traditions was so touching and held me enthralled. And their love story was beautiful even if it was not so traditional .
I did not want this book to end and I will be reading more by this author, and if only it was made into a movie so I could see Jace's home and art work and the back yard where he grilled and I would also love to see the camping site and oh the waterfall.

You have got to read this book. Jason Blackhawke is the sexiest hero I have ever read about. Who can resist a sexy Native American, US Marshall, and artist all rolled up in one? The story of Angelina and Jason is a wonderful journey to love. I found myself reading the book straight through and scrambling to read the next one. I highly recommend The Lawman’s Apache Moon, the Texas Lawmen series, and the writing of Ms. Holt.

Was okay. I didn't feel the two main characters spent very much time together at all- 1 car ride, 1 meal with his family, 1- overnight camping trip where they made out but got interrupted by his work calling and them having to end the trip which she was going to finagle anyway. Then she runs away. There just seemed to be lust between them not love as they really didn't know each other. Apparently, I already own books 1 and 3, thanks to free book offers through Bookbub. (This was book 2).I will try reading but I read a review of book 1 that said basically what I just said of book 2, so I'm not sure how that's going to go.

Wow, just wow.

I've read the first two books in this series, I have the third book and after reading that one I will purchase book four. The characters are well developed and real. Ms. Holt describes situations as if you are living it with the characters in the book. I liked how the story developed and the characters processed and came to finally accept their feelings. You can feel the love as it grows, beautiful. I definitely recommend this book as well as the rest of the series.

I really liked this one. This author has a very descriptive writing style and she brought the characters and scenery to life. The characters are very well developed and I enjoyed how the relationship between Jace and Angela's evolves What starts out as a road trip with someone who is little more than a stranger and someone she's not even sure she likes turns into one heck of a ride before it's over.

I recommend this one!

Beautiful

A painting drew her to the southwest, especially Santa Fe. After a detour in Texas, and seeing her friend marry her high school sweetheart, Angie gets a lift from Jace a friend of Clay's & best man at the wedding. Her comes Angie & Jace's bug problem, they have to stop because of rain and flooding and run into his aunt preacher. Both of them had been abandoned when they were you, he luckily had family help him, she didn't.

With the beautiful landscape as the background for this story. Two strong, successful people, clash with their differences. He is a Marshall, knowing the culture of New Mexico being half Apache, and half white. While her world is far removed, with knowing New York, fashion, to opening a store here. Mishap happens, and is it fake or is it real. Delightful story and you love the clash between these two, Will they get it straighten out, or is it even necessary if they found love.

You know you are in for an entertaining story, when the book is written by Ms Holt. This one is no different.
This one centers around Jace and Angie. The characters were well developed and likable. The chemistry between them was fun to read and the plot kept you wondering what would happen next.
So, another winner from Debra Holt.

Ugh....full of cowards and quiet pessimists.

These books are frustrating to read...and the females are a bit too eager to bounce on thier men. Both sexes also read the worst into any and all situations. A whole two books full of obtuse and shockingly unobservant people. Thier garbage process of thought creates or expounds on their problems.
