DNF @ 70%

I really tried with this one because I enjoy reverse harem stories and there are so few that are not erotica. I just couldn't finish it though. I put it down and couldn't pick it up again. I kept finding other things to do instead of read. That is when I knew I had to quit. Here are the reasons why:

1. Blue is such a Mary Sue that she can turn the "bad" kids good. Yep. They aren't bad; they are just misunderstood.

2. Adult men fall for her Mary Suedom. Yuck.

3. A 17 year old girl calls a group of kids "hooligans." To make it worse, I think they were suppose to be 1950 greasers.

5. Teenage boys let themselves be called Fi, Fo, and Fum. Fum's name is Derrik.

The list goes on, but it would contain spoilers. I will just end my review here.

*I requested and received a copy of this book from Netgalley and have given an honest and unbiased review *

It was cute and heart warming in the beginning but then it got boring.

Too much reference to the list she made to get out of her own comfort zone. We get it. You have a list.

Blue shows no interest in any guy, and then suddenly seeing all these women with their man made her get an epiphany that she wants a partner too. Which sounded weird. Why not fall in love first?

There is some cute funny moments that might make it worth reading. Plus, the unexpected dark twist was surprising. Don't know if I'd continue. Not a bad story though.

The Blues

Somewhat basic, repetitive, simple sentences and on the immature side of YA. DNF. Maybe for you, not for me, and firmly in the not my cup of tea zone.

Oh wow! It took me a chapter to get into it but once I did I could not put the book down! I readnit all in one hit and decided to spend the rest of the day reading the next book in the series

I don’t quite know what to say except Blue is a strong and fiesty heroine, the story took a complete different direction to what I was expecting as I got further into the story

Full of excitement danger and romance, I can express how good this book really was, it is a clean read and exceptionally good, I am so glad I read this

Loved

This author and book came out of nowhere and completely blew me away. This isn't your average RH book and the story line is completely different than I have read before. I can say I will recommend this book and can not wait to see what happens next. The characters, settings and story kept me captive and I can only hope that it continues with the next book

A Girl Named Blue: The Adventure Begins by Cecilia Randell lives up to it's name! It's a fantastic beginning to a new Reverse Harem series. Blue is starting her senior year of high school at a new school. She's started over plenty of times due to her mom's job, but this is the first year without her beloved dad. To keep herself from falling into a funk, she has created a list. This is a wish list of new experiences to help her step out of her comfort zone. It also helps force her to connect with new friends starting on Day 1. While out hiking with her new friends, they accidentally travel through a portal ending up in another world. While there they face kidnappers, clansmen, and beasts; there's danger, violence, tragedy, attractions, and possibly love. Blue is definitely out of her comfort zone, but she's also never felt so alive.

There is great world building in this book. There's a complete glossary and an atlas before the story even begins. This is a detailed, multi-layered universe. The story is well-done. It's full of thrills and suspense. It's quite original. However, it's the characters in this book that make it special. Blue is delightful. She is captivating, yet has no idea how she affects the people, especially men, around her. Her dad was a wise man and she has taken his lessons to heart. She cares about other people and tries her best to make them happy. The men are all yummy. It's obvious that Forrest and Mo'ata will be part of her Prida (her little ducklings!), but I am not sure which of the other men will join them. Forrest is the perfect young man to fall in love with; an artist, sweet, smart. Mo'ata is a bit older, but he's irresistable. Then there's the complicated Jason, the hooligan Trevon, her rescuer Levi, the mercenary with a sense of humor Felix. These are all possibilities. Interesting twist to not make her choices clear. I also liked her best friends, Pre and Kevin. It was so nice to have a girl become an instant friend instead of an instant enemy to Blue.

I would have liked more detail once Blue returned to Earth. How did the disappearances play out? How was Phe able to finish her senior year? How did Jason fit in? There would have been mourning and an adjustment back to normalcy after such an experience. This is nitpicking. I enjoyed the book so much, I just wanted more. I want Forrest's last comment to take place quickly! I also want that comment followed by a kiss. Please!

Review here at https://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/

Blue has had a really hard year since her father died in a car accident- he was her best friend, biggest supporter and the backbone to her family. Moving again due to her mom's job, Blue decides to try and embrace life again and makes a list of things she wants to try, including blue streaks in her hair, making new friends and driving a manual car. Well, on her first day of school, Blue makes at least one of those things come true in the form of 5 possible new friends. This friendship thing really seems to be working out when they invite Blue on a hiking trip. What none of them knew was that Texas actually has a portal to another world- and they hiked right into it.

I am on such a reverse harem kick recently, gobbling up any and everyone I stumble across. When I saw that this was a "slow burn" RH I was super excited because I am not a fan of the overly sexual, insta-love that I attempt to avoid in books. Slow burn is always the way to go in my opinion, just saying. Overall this was a very different kind of book than what I thought, more a mystery adventure where at times they just occasionally have a romantic connection and some bubbling tension. I was slightly confused at her level of potential man-friends and keep guessing who would be picked.

Blue was a very cute, upbeat character. She bristles when the guys fight over her and "treat her like a puppy" but I can kind of understand where it comes from. She seemed like a an over enthusiastic kid (or puppy), eager to please, hyper, oversharing everything. I kind of wanted to protect her too, which makes sense that all the guys were falling over themselves to be the one who got to be her protector.

I was a little surprised by the turns this story took. A Girl Named Blue started lighthearted and fun (minus the repeated tangents about how sad Blue was over her dad's death and how proud of her choices he would be) and by the end of the book some surprising, sad and terrible events happened that completely changed the tone of the book. There was no cliffhanger here, technically this could be the end, but there were enough loose ends that the next book in the series

Despite what the blurb at the top says, which prepared me for a straight romance book, this was anything but, and a seriously welcome addition to my growing list of "new authors to follow everything they do because I love them"

Short story, Blue is trying to be more impulsive and makes friends with two different groups who have some issue between them. Then things go nuts and you get to learn more about Blue, how she handles things, how the story will most likely take some turns you weren't expecting (and some you were) and leave you wanting more in a pleasantly fulfilled "that book was great and there wasn't a cliffhanger so i'm not going crazy right now needing to know what happened" kind of way.

No cliffhanger. This is important. But there are so many directions for this story to go and for a reverse harem, this is the first time I don't know who the guys are/will be. I have a few ideas, but only one that I'm pretty sure of, and I like the ambiguity. It's less "mystical we don't have an excuse for this irregularity" and more "let's follow our hearts and see where it leads"

Which is just sweet.

This was awesome!

Sci-fi multivariate adventure reverse harem, everything I love in one book! Really what's not to love!? The writing and world building is really well done, and you can tell that with each consecutive book it will just build even more. I loved the characters, just all around amazing. I can not wait for book two!

I recently got reminded about this series and remembered I had picked up book 1. On a whim decided to read it. I am glad I picked this one up, it took me a bit of time to get into the story, but the further I got the more I enjoyed it. I really like the premise of this one and the way the world came alive slowly throughout the book. It reads a bit like portal fantasy, but also like science fiction romance.

A Girl Named Blue follows the story of a girl named Blue as the title suggests. Blue is starting her new school year, she has lost her dad a while ago and she has a plan for this year to make it the year of new things to get her out of her comfort zone. I liked Blue's perspective on things, the way she valued comfort, but also wanted to push herself. I also liked the way she was close to her dad and the way she accepted her mom like she was. She remained likeable throughout the book. I liked how she was kind and likeable and also smart and capable. She knew she couldn't handle all situations and knew when to stay out of the way, but also wasn't afraid to speak her mind.

This story starts relatively normal with Blue starting her new school and making some new friends. There is a bit her spending some time with her new friends until they decide to go hiking one day and while hiking they accidentally get transported to another world. That was the point the story really got interesting for me. I liked learning more of the new world they find themselves in and how this world is connected to other open and closed worlds by the way of portals.

This book was a fun read and had that adventurous vibe as Blue and her friends get more of an adventure than they bargained for. Some of their friends get kidnapped and they want to get them back. They meet new characters there that help them on their journey. And slowly we find out there's more going on, the kidnappings are related to a bigger problem here. They also have to figure out how to get home. While it has this fun vibe, there are also darker parts with violence and the kidnappings going on.

I liked the slow burn set up for this romance. There are multiple guys that all are interested in Blue and she slowly forms a bond with some of them, but this book only is the start of their connections. Blue doesn't get into a romantic relationship yet in this book, but the foundations are definitely there. I am curious to see how the romances will develop. I liked seeing how Blue interacted with the other characters and I liked her connection with some of the guys. Others I feel I don't know enough of yet.

There are a lot of characters in this book and at times I had some trouble remembering who was who. There are a lot of characters we meet in quick succession and some that we get to know mostly in name only. And it could get a bit confusing at times, but this went better as the book progressed. I also felt the writing style felt a bit off at times at first, but this was also something that improved or maybe I got used to it as the book progressed.

This book is told from multiple points of view which I thought worked well here, but there are a few places where I felt that it was a bit much. Sometimes the point of view switches very fast through multiple different points of views and with the big amount of characters and not everyone knowing the same thing it could get a bit confusing at times. And other times the switches went very smoothly. For the most part I did like how the different points of view added something, although it did ruin some of the mystery at times.

I really liked the world building, it's something that's slowly becomes more apparent as the story progresses. There are different groups of people and organizations in these world and ways the different world are related, organizations that govern them and factions that span multiple world. They all have their own goals and customs and cultures. I liked seeing more of the Clans people and then later there are mercenaries as well and the ministry and the Order. The world feels very thought out even though we only get to see a small section of it here. It makes me eager to read more and see more of the world.

To summarize: I had fun reading this book it's an enjoyable story about a girl named Blue who together with some of her new friends accidentally travels through a portal and lands in a different world. Some of their friends get kidnapped and they have to find them and find a way home. They meet new people along the way who help or hinder them. This was an engaging story and I enjoyed reading it. Blue was a kind and likable character who also wasn't afraid to speak her mind. I liked seeing her interact with the other characters and see the foundations for the romances form. There are a lot of side characters in this book and at times it could be a bit much. It could get difficult to remember who was who at times and there are a few places where the point of view switches a bit too often too quickly. I liked the world building and learning more about this new world and the people that live there. It reads like a light and fun read most of the time, but there are some darker story threads too. I am already eager to return to this series in book 2!

All I’m going to say about this book is that it is a freaking amazing story! I was sucked in before I even finished the first chapter and I couldn’t climb out until I got to the end of the book! This was the first time reading anything by Cecilia Randell and I gotta say she’s awesome at creating her characters and weaving different realities to the point that they feel like they are real! I’m on to the next book because I have to know what happens to Blue and her friends.
So yes I most definitely recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a fantastic story to crawl into and get lost within its pages!

So I almost stopped reading this.. Blue is so uncomfortably awkward at first. I am one of those people who suffer second hand embarrassment... I suffer like real, real bad. But I am glad that I stuck it out. it all kind of worked out in the end and I enjoyed this book.

I would recommend this book to maybe a teen. There wasn’t any profanity that I could remember or anything sexual (mainly kiss on the cheek?). I felt like just dropping the book and picking something else to read but I was persistent because I don’t like leaving books unread half way through. I liked the ending of it and it makes me think that maybe book 2 will be much better. Well’ll see.

I received a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Well, this book was a fail for me. While based on the synopsis and the reverse harem genre it was promising at first, still for me it became painfully obvious form the first page that I won’t love it. Unfortunately, the narration of the story is so childish and immature that even if the main character is 18 and the rest of them are all older it was impossible for me to connect with it. The thing is that after such a huge and prominent problem (for me it was a problem) it takes a miracle for me to enjoy a book. The constant repetition didn’t help either.
However, the narration wasn’t the only problematic element in the book in my opinion. Still the plot wasn’t bad, it was a bit simple and somewhat predictable but I could enjoy it. However, when it comes to reverse harem this book could win the gold medal for sow burn, not only I couldn’t really identify the possible members of a future harem there wasn’t much of a romantic element to the book either. It kinda disappointed me a lot.
As for the world building, I think that was the one thing in the book that had the biggest potential it is just a shame that the introduction of it is full of dark spots and the whole thing is pretty glossed over.

I think I could have loved the characters if I really got to know them. Apart from Blue the rest of them stays in the shadows, barely, generically introduced despite having their own chapters. However, I didn’t love Blue. She had some redeeming qualities but she was awkward as hell, especially in the beginning. Not to mention her constant references to her stupid list and her behavior combined felt as if she lived her first 18 years in a isolated bubble and making a conversation is like winning a Noble prize. I’m kind of an introvert but I couldn’t relate t her at all. Her character was just unrealistic.

I probably going to give a try for the next book a well because I’m curious about the identities of her harem but all I can say that there are a lot of way better RH books out there.

The only reason there isn't any insta-love in this book is because the Awesome Powers of Teenage Crushes™ were at work instead. Also, we have a Mary Sue MC, YAY! (<-- sarcasm.) Every single one of the characters is entirely one-dimensional.

As though the simple act of it having been terribly(ish) written was not enough for this book, there was a major disconnect with the stories and its characters. An example of this is that the reactions of the people therein were oftentimes off in some way. Blue, the protagonist, is almost eighteen years old, and everyone is always(the thing is, I'm not even exaggerating) mentioning how mature she is. That alone wouldn't be so irritating, if not for the fact that she has the thought process of a child and she acts like it.

I found the authour's decision regarding the naming of the characters to be poorly made. I mean, "Mo'ata", seriously? The same adjectives that were used by the aforementioned male individual to describe Blue were also used by Blue to describe her friend, and how attractive she suddenly found him to be. There were orthographic mistakes aplenty in this book.

One of is a megalomaniac, and I guess that was supposed to be a plot twist(fail), except it was pretty obvious it was him behind everything. Now, don't get me wrong: I don't expect the protagonist of every book to be a genius at deducing things, but when something is staring them right in the face, I certainly do expect them to fucking see it. Y'know?!

All in all, I've read worst things than this, but that's not the classification any book should aspire to have.

The books definitely turned out to be more that I expected. The story started off pretty much like any other story about a teenage girl moving into a new town. I had no idea the direction it would all take, but I'm rather pleased with the result.
It wasn't one of those books that you instantly know you'll like, the ones that get you hooked from the beginning. It had a more subtle approach, making you gradually warm up to it and its characters and I like that. It had a lot of confusing moments, where I had no idea what was going on or what would happen next, though the Glossary in the beginning help some.
I think this story has some potential and I would really like to read any follow ups for it.

One of the best stories I've read in awhile

This story was phenomenal, but the writing could use some work. I was immediately drawn into the world and didn't want the book to end. Unfortunately, there were some instances that pulled me out of the world. Several writing errors, and just times when the writing dragged on, and I skimmed over it. All that being said I am in love with the story and will definitely be reading the next!

This is a book with stumbles, oddities, a parade of beginning glimpses into certain characters, and yet, it grabbed me to the point where I couldn't put it down.

Blue Faust is still battling with the loss of her father and trying to find footing along with her mother to jump start their lives again. After a move, she's about to enter a new school and has a list of ways to go beyond her boundaries and attack life head-on—a way to honor her father's memory. When a hiking trip with her new found friends lands them on a different world, they find themselves caught up in the middle of a huge, 'alien' conspiracy. Blue's idea of finding new adventures in life now takes a spin which isn't only beyond her wildest dreams but is simply dangerous.

Blue is a strange girl and was hard to connect to at first. She supposedly has switched schools many times in her life. . .so should be a fairly normal teen but with issues. Instead, she comes across as extremely naive, socially challenged (at best), and almost as if she as no idea how life in high school normally functions. Still, there's something about her which was intriguing, and as the story continues, she grows and matures. Not completely but enough to make it hard not to cheer for her.

This is a reverse harem romance and a very slow burner at that (something I appreciate). From the guys' side, it's love at first sight. Always. Instantly. Without question. Which made me wonder if there is/will be some sort of alien power about her later on. . .or maybe not. In any case, despite her lack of any special traits (except blue hair and being relatively small), guys can't resist her. That is something some readers will be okay with and others not. However, from Blue's side, there is little to no interest during this first book. Another thing I appreciated. She has her hands full, completely. She's dealing with her father's death, finally connecting to her mother, figuring out where her life should go, caught up in an alien world, thrown into deadly dangers. . .yep, she has enough on her plate without heading into romantic tug-a-wars too.

While the first chapters hit teenage drama in a high school setting, the exciting, sci-fi action starts a little later on. And it works. The author takes the time to let Blue and the 'normal' earthlings gain a sure footing before fantasy sets in. And when the other worlds unfold, it's no problem to sink right into them. The settings are well described and the logic founded enough to make it pretty easy to follow along. As the layers of conspiracy and intrigue later start to unravel, it does get more complicated, and there are enough levels left to hit off to the rest of the series. One that promises to be interesting, especially when taking into account the extreme corners Blue's future harem of men seem to be coming from. It will be interesting to see how all of this somehow pulls together.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed it enough to want to leave my honest thoughts.

An enjoyable read with some ideas that I would like to learn more about and the start of what could be an interesting story arc.
I liked the concept of various worlds with different levels of technology linked by portals (and some with space travel, though those are only mentioned) and a group of kids that accidentally pass through one and get caught up in trouble.

Not a great deal of description of the characters or world in the narrative (although the city was described in some detail), but there was an introductory prologue, map and glossary to help outline the worlds and cultures, so clearly thought has gone into this universe.

A very sweet and innocent YA read with very little teenage drama beyond a little moodiness and some former-friends antagonism. Not much is school based beyond the introductory chapters.
The characters seemed younger than 17-21 year-olds emotionally and behaviourally, but seemed to have quite calm and mature attitudes once their "adventure" began. They listened to advice, took sensible precautions and followed directions from older/ more experienced characters (I know, shocker, right?). No acting out or other stereotypical teen behaviours. No sex or even explicit thoughts.
Not for those who want dark/twisted sexy reads, this is more romance, but all internalised. Kind of a prequel to RH, planting the seeds.

Not for those who hate Mary Sues, as that is most definitely what Blue is. She's sweet, optimistic, friendly and shy but "pushing her boundaries" and liked by multiple guys for these innocent traits, provoking protectiveness. The guys are not really fleshed out much, can't even say for sure who all the romantic interests will be.

There is some death and injury but no real gore.

No cliffhangers, yay! A resolution and end to this part of the story arc, with some loose threads to pursue in the next books. Looking forward to finding out where those go.

Lots of typos, some unnecessary repetition. Could use more editing.

Review originally published at my blog for Xpresso Book Tours: https://bookishpuffcorn.wordpress.com...

A Girl Named Blue is the first book in the series by Cecilia Randell. It’s all about a girl named Blue Faust, with the blue streaks in her hair and all-blue outfit in her first day of school.

This is a reverse harem read and it’s quite my first time having to read something of that genre. I honestly thought of DNFing it because it seems so slow at first but deciding to finish it was a really good idea so I recommend readers to be patient and absorb every part of the story to enjoy it.

Blue Faust and her mom just moved into a new town. It’s cute that in her first day of school, she was like “Blue rocking blue.” I actually like her name and the idea of her list of new things. Blue clearly is daddy’s girl and I wonder what I’d be like if I’m my daddy’s girl too, lol.

The story is mainly Blue along with her group of friends as they managed to get to a whole new planet with no idea why they ended up there. The writing is pretty good. It’s easy to read and understand as long as you’ll be patient because it really seems dragging at first.

I had this cringy feeling while reading the book because Blue’s name seems to repeat all the time. Well, I get that it was written in the 3rd person POV but maybe using other words to imply that it’s Blue the book is talking about.

I honestly don’t know yet how I feel about reverse harem though it’s a good thing to try it out and have this as my first read. I absolutely loved how the Moa’ta’s camp worked with all those amazing tech with the tents. It’s like their tech is hidden and I remembered Wakanda. (I seem to have this fascination with MCU references)

This seems like a good read. I didn’t love it that much nor hated it. I recommend this to fans of reverse harem! Overall, I rate A Girl Named Blue by Cecilia Randell, 3 out of 5 stars!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in return for an honest review.

Blue, and she really does have a thing for blue, has just moved to a new town with her mother. They are on their own because her father has recently died in a car accident. This is going to be Blue's year - she is going to give everything a go and really put herself out there which is not her normal way of going about life. In no time at all, she has made some new friends, some rather attractive ones, and she finds herself going on a hike with them into the local wilderness. This is when it all starts to go a little bit pear-shaped as they find themselves in another dimension or world dealing with alien beings who look like everyday people. Conspiracies, treachery, and betrayal seem to be what Blue has stumbled into with her friends - a long distance away for the fun, laughter, and adventure she was aiming for.

This book starts off quite light-hearted despite the tragedy in Blue's life and has some entertaining moments. She is an uncomfortably awkward character who gradually grows into herself - who doesn't love a character who finds her feet and starts to stand on them steadily. There are a number of boys and men who begin to want to take care of her and you can see that this will be a steady build as the author suggests in her description of this series. The men part seems a little clunky in comparison to the teenage boys - not a hundred percent convinced about the tribe guy but mmm. I'm willing to suspend judgment and see where that part of the story goes in future books. The action certainly builds as the story progresses and revelations about Blue and the life she has stumbled into come hard and fast as the book comes to an end. I really did enjoy this book and imagine it will hold quite an appeal for a young adult audience. I'm looking forward to seeing where to from here for Blue, Ms. Randall?

I hate myself for saying this, but why do I read books that I enjoy so much so damn fast.  By the last chapter, I realise the adventure is almost over and that I don't have the next book yet, so I'll now have to wait!  I hate waiting...

This book took me completely by surprise, I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did.  Initially, this seemed like just another fantasy read, but (yes, it is) there is much more to the story.  I got sucked into the world.  I got lost in the culture.

The main protagonist, Blue, is one spicy character, and while most of the story is told from her perspective, we do jump to relevant characters to get a better view of the story and the different aspects of the plot.  This makes a richer story and keeps you on your feet and guessing a lot of the time.

The romance is slow burning (my favourite, very few fall in love immediately), and there are a lot more options for this Blue.  She has quite a lot of choices to make.  So, if you do not enjoy such tales, skip out now (taste differs so I won't feel offended).

The story itself was great.  I would have loved a bit more, which is what you want from books because this will keep you coming back for more...

Audiobook. Sorry if I spell the character's names wrong. I only have their sound to go by.

This was so creative! I'm not really one for sci-fi, but this wasn't overwhelming with the techno-jargon, and focused on the plot and relationships. If felt a little like Ilona Andrews' Innkeeper series, but a junior version.

Blue is a bit of an enigma as a main character. I liked her. I liked that she was rational, and able to laugh at herself. I liked that she was emotionally aware of herself and others. But Blue was also a little too good to be true. The innocence that she embodies is just a little unbelievable for an eighteen-year-old girl. She says that her group of friends treats her like a puppy, or a kid sister, and is completely unaware of the attraction that others feel for her.

*Spoilers*
Phillip going bad was something I wish we, as readers, could have experienced for ourselves. It came out of nowhere and I didn't have a gauge on his behavior beforehand (he doesn't have many speaking roles) to have something to compare his new "crazy" behavior.

I LOVE the ending. I love that they left and went back to Earth, and supposedly said goodbye to the adventure. Had Blue stayed, it would've been unbelievably out of character. As heartbreaking as her leaving was, it felt right.

Wow! This is the start of a really cool rh series.
The only thing I don't like about this book is the cover! I know, its a dumb thing, but I just can't stand it.

For what I like
- I really loved Blu- she is a strong and funny character
- I love that Blu has a mom and doesnt come from a broken home or an abused background like so many other rh books
- I love that she doesnt sleep with anyone .
- And, I like all the guys surronding her and her friends.

Overall it was a great adventure.

This is a fun combination of sci-fi and fantasy. Blue Faust is a strong female lead tempered with real weaknesses and fears. The supporting cast play off her well.
The beginning took longer to bridge from the normal to the adventure than I expected, but the wait worth it. The contrast was more potent as a result, and we got to know the main characters before they were upturned and tossed into a mess.
Often such heroines are too serious, but sparkles of smart-aleck appear through the story and make Blue more fun read about.
I agree with some of the points made by the 2-star reviewers, but it was an enjoyable enough read those issues didn't pull me out of the story.

The Dad Report: There wasn't anything sexual such that I'd steer my teens clear. About a third of the way through there was an abrupt initiation of profanity. At first it felt like characterization, but in the second half seemed excessive and often pushed me away from the unfolding tale.
