Two young Arkansas boys, having witnessed an attempted rape and murder, flee to the island home of the hermit Uncle Ethel, with the murderer close on their heels
I found this hardcover in a cool little used bookshop I visit on occasion up in cottage country and it looked like a bit of a mash-up between Deliverance and a Tom Sawyer/Huckleberry Finn novel. Sounds cool, right?
I'm sure it eventually starts going somewhere, but I'm not sure when or where. I got two murders in and the author really seemed to be dragging his feet on any forward momentum, preferring to wallow in the vagaries of the inhabitants of the Deep South. And, while that's fun for a while, I do like a little meat with my gravy.
I really did enjoy this book. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that some of the sentences were awkward. I should not have to reread a sentence just to get a clear meaning.
