Author of book detailing the lives and loves of women loving women. The characters are saucy, sassy and hopefully relatable as they travel through life.
Librarian note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Again wanting to foray into new authors, I chose this for the cover, it's quite lovely, no? The story started off pretty good actually, MC Alex(is) and MC Catherine meet at a medical conference as Alex is hightailing it outta there due to anxiety/claustrophobia and Catherine recognizes the signs and is drawn to her. Attraction is quick, but Catherine is straight, recently divorced and her 40+ y/o self doesn't know what to do with these new feelings. Alex has been burned and abandoned in the past and often runs before others can hurt her.
Catherine is a surgeon, Alex a tech specialist in the OR. I liked this set up, it was quite new. I wish the author would have delved more into Alex's past and her above anxiety issues, but the bulk of the book takes place in Catherine's mansion, where Alex takes up residence in the basement apt after a breakup, and the attraction between the two starts to burn, slowly. You all see where this is going, right? Things left unsaid, miscommunication, running, growing attraction. However before Catherine can get her act together to say how she feels, there is an accident and a big thing happens.
OK, this is where things really lost if for me. I wish I didn't have to spoiler-alert it, but I do:
The two revert to teenager-syndrome as well, something that always annoys me in lesfic, considering their intense careers and supposed ages. They constantly have to touch, hold hands, kiss, feel each other up, even at a large dinner party with all their friends, who claim "aw that's so cute" but really all of them are averting their eyes as they eat their beef wellington and wish they were at home watching Succession (great show people, go watch it!).
All in all, I was disappointed at what could have been a pretty good story. I think I will skip book 2, unless anyone can convince me that the story part and character development is better and more mature. 2/5 stars.
A little more "porny" then what I'm used to. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining!! Just a few eye brow raising sex scenes, at least for me. Also, the author's second book in this series has almost the identical sex scenes. All I could think to myself was "There's a lot of kinky lesbians in this group of friends."
You've got a bit of everything in this story.. typical straight girl falls in love with lesbian, visa versa. We all know how them book's end, so its predictable, easy ready, so to say. Its been written before (many times) but this was still a great romance. The story is told from both Catherine and Alexis points of view. The character have chemistry, but can leave you feeling irritated slightly.
And there's the naughtiness... quite steamy in parts.
4.5 stars! The slow burn may be too long for some but pulled me that much more into the story and characters. After much anticipation, a biting twist and getting past a bit of stiff dialogue, the story explodes into steamy hotness! I'm moving on to book 2.
This was an OK read. It started off well enough. I was initially put off by the first person storytelling but then POV swap happened and I grew used to the style. The writing overall flows well but it's the content I didn't enjoy as much.
The book didn't go anywhere in the middle, the author could've easily cut 50 pages there and nothing would be lost story wise. Or like when POV switching is skipped for no reason at random times. The whole Brooke episode with no input from Alex felt especially out of place.
And the final part of the book really put me off. It went from drama to porno of the "look what lesbians can do" kind. It's their first time, one of them hasn't even been with a woman before. A fricking rim job? Really? And then it continues from page to page and never ends. Takes a short break until porn begins again with barely any emotional content sprinkled on top. Up until the very last 70 or so pages of the book, nothing pointed that it will end up being pornography. One fetish after another, even BDSM shows up outta nowhere. Don't get me wrong, I love erotica and tastefully done sex scenes but I just couldn't get into it this time. The tone dissonance was overwhelming.
There was also some weirdness in how characters instantly go from one state to another. From stable as a rock to emotional wreck in a few sentences even. There is a soapy aftertaste to this read for sure.
Despite my dislike of how intimacy was handled and the stagnating drama in the middle of the book, I do think this author has potential. There was a lot to like in this book. The characters, the dialogue. People felt real. I will give sequels a try. I hear Separate Like Stars is also good.
Neurosurgeon Dr Catherine Waters comes across Alexis Woods, who is about to have a panic attack, at a conference and subtly manages to calm her. Catherine's divorce from her husband has just been finalised and Alexis is worrying about her failing relationship with her girlfriend of five years. A short time later they find they are both working together in the same hospital with their last interaction having been an odd misunderstanding.
Told from alternating first person point of view, their relationship starts off as a friendship with the complication of Alexis being attracted to Catherine. Catherine is straight and has never even considered being with a woman but she knows she needs Alexis, her confusion constantly expressed in her thoughts. Their inability to fully express how they feel about each other is incredibly frustrating and creates tons of angst. I wanted to shake both of them at various points throughout the book but I enjoyed the dynamic and how it unfolded.
The sex scenes are steamy and erotic but
In spite of my misgivings, I enjoyed reading this. I liked the angst and their lack of communication skills.
Written in the present tense: first of her's read & really enjoyed the story - I cared what happened, the sign of a good read. Became surprisingly explicit towards the end - no complaints, we were warned. First read 5*s, downgraded to 4*s.
Fantastic book! It’s a bit of a build up one, but boy when it happens it happens! Left me feeling extremely steamy.
One time my kindle nearly went flying, but the next page things were okay. Some good suspense, great storyline. By the last 10 or so pages I’d had enough of the sex scenes, honestly I don’t know anyone who can go on that long! Maybe I’m sheltered hehe.
Originally when i started this read i was dreading it. The way the author wrote it felt very impersonal even if sye was writing from both main character's point of view. It lacked an emotional connection that allows the reader to understand the character better. But i pushed through. Then more dialogue came through and though it wasn't bad it still felt robotic at times. For instance, many people speak with contractions (ie can't, I'm, etc). You don't use them to emphasize something or if you are being professional...at least that's how I read it. Anyway...that was my biggest problem with the read...lack of connection and emotion from the characters in a sense that I could feel them. The story itself...was enjoyable. It did go from half tue book being nothing to holy smokes the characters a attached by one device or body part. I gave this 3 stars because it wasn't a terrible read but it just didn't do it for me but it was a kU book so... Read it and decide for yourself if you are inclined to
I'm not a big fan of alternating pov's in a book. In the hands of a poor writer, it's tough to distinguish one character from another, so soon enough, I can't tell who's saying what and that ruins everything for me. At first, I found Catherine's and Alex's voices too similar but as the story progressed, their personalities won out and I had a clearer picture of each character. The actual story is about two women who meet at a surgical convention. Both Catherine and Alex have just ended long relationships and are lonely and vulnerable. Becoming friends is a natural first step and when Alex becomes Catherine's tenant, we see the inevitability of a romance. But not so fast because the author truly understands the power of anticipation. It's a slow burn about as sweet as I've read and then finally, we see the couple get together in some very hot scenes. I couldn't put down the book until the end.
This is my first book from the author. Actually, is this a dual POV and I kind of like it and honestly I was prepared to give this a 5. Straight women felt connection with a lesbian plot.. not new but I was willing to give it a try. They started great, pacing is good. Nothing rushed. Well, that was I thought at first until somewhere in the middle I got bored and I had to stop reading. I can feel that it was forced just to make the story long. A lot of unwanted pages that can be cut down. Maybe this book can work out with someone but not for me. Yeah, there are cute moments. A lil bit of jealousy here and there. 3.5
This is the first book in the Velvet Series which is set in a surgical hospital in the USA.
Alexis has a job she loves. A theatre nurse in a busy hospital, she is capable and respected for her skills and her good humor. Fresh from a break up with her ex, she is overwhelmed to find the new neurosurgeon in the hospital is Catherine, with whom she felt a passing attraction at a conference a few months prior.
Catherine is trying to find her feet after a bad divorce from her ex. Moving to a new town and a new job, she is excited to see Alexis in her operating theatre, prepping for surgery with her. Knowing their attraction to one another is growing, they work at hiding it from friends and colleagues. When one of them is in an accident, will it all come spilling out?
This was a well written and engaging tale. I really liked both the main characters. Catherine is a creature of habit, and Alexis has her own issues. Kane has a good grasp of how to build sexual tension between the characters and has created an interesting pair with an unusual dynamic.
There are a lot of sex scenes in the book. They do feel appropriate to the characters and to the plot, but they are adventurous and graphic and may not suit those after a sweet romance.
I really enjoyed this book. I couldn’t wait to buy the following book in the series, Providence. Gibson is an interesting writer, developing a more interesting take on the standard hospital romance sub genre. Enjoy.
Ridiculous. I got tired of the angst and intentional drama around the 60% mark and just started page flipping. It usually goes down hill from there. Too much fear. Fear of everything and it was with both MC's. Like I said, ridiculous. People actually talk to each other. The intentional road blocks were glaringly obvious. This could have been so much better if they'd just had an honest conversation. Bah. Done with it.
Least it saves me from having to read book 2 if this is how she writes.
Fusion - bright blue meets emerald green in Book One of The Velvet series.
Diana Kane has written a lovely lesbian romance novel. The main characters are Catherine and Alex. Each woman brings a life filled with issues to their friendship. They meet at a professional conference, but work in different Midwest cities. Alex fondly remembers Catherine, from their two brief encounters, when she unexpectedly turns up at her hospital's OR as the new neurosurgeon. Their friendship is complicated by magnetic attraction and poor communication. Catherine left her marriage after suffering her husband's infidelity. Alexis has her hands full trying to keep her own lesbian relationship from imploding after five years together. Alexis and her partner are losing an uphill battle, but cheating isn't the reason for their troubles.
I don't normally enjoy the drama caused by pairing out lesbians with self identified straight women. At one point a character tosses out an insensitive generalization that "there is no such thing as straight." Catherine feels genuine confusion and conflict over her relationship with Alex. Alex struggles with her own demons, but her issues are never similarly trivialized. A familiar plot device helps bridge the chasm which develops between the main characters. It was handled with emotional sensitivity and managed to move the story along powerfully.
A few typos were overlooked during the editing process, but nothing was too jarring. This is the first novel that I've read by Diana Kane. I look forward to the continuation of The Velvet series, because Book Two should be even better than Book One.
Oh! Why did I keep this on my TBR shelves for so long?!This is a fantastic toaster oven/friends to lovers slow burn HOT love story! Alexis is at a conference and has a panic attack, the person who calms her down is Catherine. They see each other on the beach that night and talk but Alexis takes Catherine being quiet personally. Then Catherine moves and joins a neurological practice that practices in the hospital Alexis works at. Alexis is a neurological tech, so the two women work together and become friends. Only problem is Alexis is attracted to Catherine, and Catherine is straight. This is a beautiful story, with HOT love scenes! 5 stars!
3.5. This is a good love story albeit somewhat predictable. You know, when the one character won't tell the other how she feels and vice versa. They get together about halfway through the book and the remainder is about their sex life. I'm not one to complain about sizzling sex scenes but the number of them here just gets to be excessive. However, I'm fairly certain I'll check out the next book in the series.
There are 2 parts to this book. The first one is Alex and Catherine falling in love but not telling each other for various reasons. When they finally do is when the second part begins, and it’s mostly sex. A lot of sex. It’s actually quite good but a little balance between the 2 parts would have been nice.
You know how people who have gone through extended periods of malnutrition need to adapt to eating food slowly to avoid refeeding syndrome? This book needs to heed that warning.
This was as dry as a damn desert until appropriate 70%, and then it was like being repeatedly smacked in the face by (insert preferred porn site here). Zero chemistry, found myself (mercifully) skimming over all of the sex. The worst part was one MC acting like dry humping would be absolutely inappropriate for the other MC’s first time with a woman, yet the first night they ever actually have sex, she (without warning) tongue blasts her asshole? Righto.
Poorly written, also. The dialogue felt so strange and stilted.

If you like potential partners pining and longing for each other this is the book for you. If you like sex sizzling off the pages this is the book for you. Diane Kane writes a book that will tease you without mercy for 3/4 of the story and gives you nonstop marathon New love sex the remaining quarter. I do recommend this book and I love the couple dynamic of Catherine and Alex
All I can say is wow! I had this book for awhile and never read it. Boy am I kicking myself in the ass for that. I couldn’t put it down. This is the first book I read by the author and I have to say I can’t wait to read more!
I am torn on what rating to give. So many parts I did enjoy. Loved the narrator for Alex.
The first quarter I absolutely loved! The chemistry with Catherine and Alex is off the charts and the first quarter was a solid 5 star. The the last quarter I enjoyed but found it was a bit to chaotic and rushed. Everything in between just a killed it for me. The slow burn was beyond frustrating! The snail pace just pissed me off, to the point I just wanted to skip ahead. Way too much time spent on the chase that it killed the anticipation off it all. Others may enjoy this pace.
For Catherine I couldn’t connect with the narrator, the tone used and especially the speed of her voice was off for me. I have listened to this narrator before and had no issues.. This time I found her voice to be panicked and hurried for some reason, it didn’t fit the character or the book at all.
I know this sounds all negative but there so many other fantastic parts to their story.
Alex and Catherine won me over. I was struggling really hard because the writing felt disjointed and forced in some places. Another issue was the way the dialogue was laid out. I can't really pinpoint specific moments because it was more like small bits here and there to piece together a bigger issue. Basically, this feels like a first draft. A lot more polishing is needed before this can be a finished piece. But, at the end of the day that is just my one opinion and like I said, Alex and Catherine sucked me into their drama enough that I ignored the irritation of all that to finish the story.
Have you ever been so angry while reading a book because the storyline took a turn you weren’t expecting?!
I️ was devouring this book when halfway thru it things took an unsuspecting turn. I️ was livid! How dare the author make me fall in love with these characters and have me completely invested in their lives then take this twist before things could be resolved!
I️ had to put the book aside for several hours because I️ didn’t care what happened anymore now that this had happened. My wife convinced me to continue reading to see how the story continued. Let’s just say that I️ was happy that I️ continued reading. For an author to make you feel such a spectrum of emotion for their characters is a wonderful gift. I️ look forward to reading more of her books.
I could not find the words that would be acceptable for a public review so I to sleep on it. This is not your ordinary love story formula. It's the formula I wish authors used more often. It's cool to read the story of how the characters fell in love and most of the story ends there. In Fusion we get to read beyond falling in love. We get to see how they'll stay in love. We also get to read some of the most erotic love scenes I've read in a long time. I could not put this book down and definitely recommend.
The story of Catherine and Alexis was sweet and at times frustrating, as only a good romance story can be. Getting to know the characters is always a great part of a good story, getting to know the secondary characters is just good especially when you can picture them in a story of their own. Both Catherine and Alexis had a few ups and downs in their relationships that left them hurting, but they were able to come together even though their communicating skills drove me crazy. I look forward to more from this series and it's Author.
I was looking for something just a bit different. Wanted a bit of romance, sex and lots of strength. Fusion gave me all that and more. A few twists and turns a couple that I really didn't expect. As soon as I have finished this I am starting book 2.
