It's Me

Rate this book
It’s the fall of 2003 and Perry Walsh is entering her freshman year of college. She quickly meets the handsome Ben Brown, a chance encounter that will forever alter the course of her life. As if navigating her connection with another human being isn't hard enough, throw in the realities of campus living: a roommate with a promise ring, regrettable one-night stands, amateur drug deals, and the age-old question of whether or not to sixty-nine with a complete stranger.

From an outsider's perspective, Perry is a party girl who is somewhat detached from reality and unconcerned with the consequences of her actions. But deep down Perry is slowly unraveling, battling a nagging feeling of emptiness even a picture perfect relationship cannot seem to fix. Confronted with mounting insecurities during her post-collegiate life in Manhattan, Perry realizes that her emotions may be manifesting into something more than she can handle. Unsure of where to turn, her inner struggle ultimately leads to a crossroads where she must choose to salvage her relationship or save herself.

It's hard to put into words how I actually feel about this book. It's not really a story in the traditional sense. It's written like a journal of sorts, each chapter detailing a different event and snippet of Perry's life.

Perry, as a character seems really young and childish. She starts out at 18, just as she's beginning college but at times I felt like she was written like a twelve year old.

The book mainy details her many college party experiences, an on-again-off again relationship with a guy named Ben, where they both cheat on each other multiple times. She struggles to find herself throughout college and her twenties, as the book continues. The many nights of getting too drunk and doing stupid things started to get really old after a while.

I did like the relationship dynamic between her and Ben, at times. But towards the end of the book it comes out that Perry is depressed and having mental health issues. I feel that this could have made the story much more powerful if it had been developed further. But, the way it was presented, it felt glossed over, and there wasn't enough development of Perry's character for me to actually feel for her or the reason behind these struggles.

There was also a spot toward the end of the book where Perry is living with a roomate named Erin, and yet at one point calls her Ali, the name of her old college roomate, so that really threw me off. I don't even know or remember who this Erin person was to her, so the whole New York roomate dynamic was strange in that sense too.

Overall, the story is an easy read, and told in a style that's unique, if not entirely cohesive. If I could use half star ratings I'd give this one 2.5 since it did make me laugh out loud a couple of times.

I loved this book. It was hilarious and awkward (hilariously awkward, more apt), and the characters reminded me of many of the people that I have known or met throughout my life. The scenarios in the book are completely realistic, and still unique-- it's clear that Hickey pulls her story from a wealth of observed life experiences but punctuates these situations with creative fictitious flair.

Underneath the comical surface, the book contains undertones that lap at the deeper and more complicated aspects of the human existence. The desire to fit in and also stand out; love, both requited and not; financial strain; the cringe-worthy hilarity of coming into one's sexuality; and above all, the misunderstood and untreated mental anguish that plagues so many of America's young and old alike -- are just a few of the topics touched upon.

With more depth than a beach read, but not too dense for readers seeking a bit of fun, this book perfectly toes the line between comedy and drama -- I highly recommend.

I think Kate Hickey is a storyteller. She made me laugh several times. I did get tired of the self absorbed characters who didn't seem to have any money worries. I was glad Perry worked in TV. I would hate to think she did anything crucial.
I wish Hickey had brought the realization of depression earlier in the book. Of course it made sense with the history of the Perry character. I also wish that there were other types of characters in the book, with a different drive and different economic background. But all in all, this was a wonderful first book and I hope Kate Hickey keeps on writing.

I won this book via Goodreads First Reads. I really enjoyed this book from the beginning. Many books claim to be able make the reader laugh out loud, but this one actually did! I found myself chuckling and enjoying Perry's sense of humor because it is so much like my own. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I really enjoyed this book. I could relate to the experiences of the main character, Perry, from her first days in college and into the real world, navigating new experiences and relationships. I became invested in her progress and laughed out loud at many of her exchanges and encounters with other characters throughout her journey. I fully endorse this read!

There were parts I definitely laughed out loud in this book! I liked Perry’s frank language but she did frustrate me. I liked that the ending wasn’t all that tidy.

Great read! Very real, like she was living my life. Funny as hell and disturbing too. Very raunchy at times and laugh out loud!

I think I need to read the sequel before figuring out how I really feel about this book. I know Perry isn't necessarily meant to be likable, and I'm down for more unlikable yet sympathetic female characters honestly, but it's hard to enjoy a book when you're not rooting for the MC. I wasn't ever entirely sold on the romance between Perry and Ben either, so maybe the next book will take more time on their relationship.

The beginning was a little jarring, since it wastes no time in bring up issues like college drinking, sex, and drug use. That being said, I liked the character arc of Perry, the protagonist. I think college especially is a trying time, and it made sense that she felt overwhelmed. I wasn't crazy about her actions, but in a way I think it made her more real, and the fact that she had to learn how to love herself was something a lot of books about college don't focus on enough.

DNF at 27%

This has potential but I don’t think I was in the mood. The chapters are short snippets of college moments but ironically the book felt like it was draaaaaaggginggggggg. I couldn’t believe I was not even at 50% but at nearly 30%.
Whatever her name is and her friend are annoying and whingey and I just can’t deal with their BS and unnecessary drama

Great book! It's a humorous story that follows the main character, Perry, through college and into the real world. I really enjoyed the transition into adulthood and the relevant look at how mental illness can impact young millennials. I recommend it highly.
