Though the skies were starting to clear, the world had never been darker. Three years after moving to Northfield, Clay, his family, and his closest allies struggle to survive in the increasingly unforgiving world. With torrential downpours encompassing most of the warmer months and brutal winters dominating the rest, the group is forced to take life-threatening risks far too often just to make ends meet. After a ruthless few months, the group is offered an invitation to attend a week-long festival at the allied trading post, Liberty Township. With food, games, and some much-needed time with his family, Clay savors every minute of their respite from the normal hardships of survival… Until the town is savagely ambushed. The attackers give the town an ultimatum: leave or be slaughtered. Unwilling to walk away from his friends in their time of need, Clay and a few others from the Northfield group volunteer to join the militia and fight for Liberty. The war, compounded by the relentless demands of everyday life in the “new” world, pushes Clay to the brink of destruction. Not only must he fight the assault on Liberty, but he must battle the demons from within. Get ready for a thrilling ride in this intense, action-packed sequel to the dystopian novel, As the Ash Fell.
A fantastic second book as Clay joins forces to defend the town of Liberty.....
The town of Liberty has always been a safe port, a sanctuary for Clay and his family to shop for goods and obtain precious items needed for survival.
When a gang of evil men decide that the town is the perfect place to migrate to, Clay and his friends/family must do all they can to stop the potential usurpers.
With plenty of action and lots of heart-stopping moments, Mr. Power once again weaves an exciting and nail-biting story with characters that the reader has grown to love. Very well done!
I’m late for a meeting but don’t care! I just HAD to finish this book! If you haven’t picked up something by this author you are missing out! I’ll definitely be rereading these soon! The plot & character development- spot on! No lulls, no filler. This needs to be a Netflix series or something!! Epic read!!!
This second book does a good job advancing the story from the first book. The writing style is quite good with not many errors in grammar etc. The story of the defense of the town was particularly strong and I like that all of these people, even those that didn't live in the town, fought so hard to defend it and cooperated toward an objective. I had to like Mayor Shelton just because of his surname, but I'm glad he was a good guy. I did find the scavenging subplot which occurs in the middle of the town under siege to be a little odd, but it finally gave Megan a little more substance and provided a crucial factor in the final resolution of the battle.
An excellent sequel to book one. I'm impressed by the maturing of writing from this author as he includes more imagery than in book one. One of the best qualities is his ability to develop the majority of the characters, fleshing them and ascribing complexity of behaviour and psychology. Enthralling read.
Book 2 follows closely to the first. I tend to use a simple rating\review system. Did I enjoy the story, was the editing sufficient, will i buy the next book...yes to all three.
The development of characters by this author is what makes this series so great. The action is there, and the emotional tension is what makes this apocalyptic series so hard to put the books down. Looking forward to more books from Powers.
A quality writer, Powers is obviously proud of his work. It was a pleasure to read his book without having errors in literally every page, which is unfortunately the case for many books in the dystopian genre.
Very interesting story with characters that i cheered for & wanted to suceed. The circumstances are horrific but appear to be survivable with determination & a lot of luck.
I really enjoyed these books not only is it a good story, but is well written with characters you care about and want to read more about. Waiting for book three!!!!!
Again realistic but not careless with the killing. I also like that the characters themselves arent perfect and the backstory for each are brief but detailed.
I liked the first book in the series better but overall I still liked this book too. I love dystopian novels and especially when they don’t have a lot of violence in them.
