It’s been slightly over a year since Kellan Thorne first accepted the Sentinel’s mantel and its power was renewed in him. He thought destroying an Arch Demon and banishing his Chaotic opposite would have brought him more respite than it did.
Now Creation itself is under threat, by a Cabal of Angels and Demons who have found a way to shatter the foundational pillars of Time itself. This dire warning is brought to the young Sentinel by an unlikely messenger who risks all to enlist the aid of God’s unchecked hand on the world.
Kellan must decide if he will stay true to his dead master’s teachings and oppose all unnatural beings or risk everything by trusting that they might rise above their natures in defense of a common threat.
This sets off a whirlwind effort that crosses both centuries and miles as Kellan, Shannon, Meghan and new allies try desperately to stay one step ahead of the Cabal. Their efforts will take them back to medieval Scotland and through modern day Egypt, Ethiopia, and Vatican City. Along the way Kellan will face new threats and form new alliances as his motely crew does its best to prevent the Cabal from destroying all our yesterdays.
It is a tiny bit better than the first book. Also while I still only feel that this is a good series it well worth reading I enjoyed it. But it borrows so heavily from other books and tv series that there is hardly anything really original in here. I don't like how all of a sudden the will of the MC is stronger than archangels and lesser gods. For no reason other than moving the plot along. You could drive a semi through some of the plot holes here. But I don't mind that because it is still a gripping story. But the character is a bit to childish for my liking. Also it feels like the writer was heavily inspired by the TV-series supernatural and lore behind books like (The mortal instruments).
Rating reduced by 50%, Book 1 was better, Kalan was witty and proactive but in book 2 he became dumb and he's a pushover, he behaves like a small bay and not a MAN in his late 20s.
The pop culture references are still a plenty in the second installment, but they feel toned down from book one. That said, what is it with Urban Fantasy authors and having their heroes shout random geek references during battle. Buthcher's magician, Hearn's druid, and now Ross' sentinel.
Back to the book.
I'm sure there's plenty of reviews on the general plot of the book by now, little late to this party, but glad to have discovered it none the less. By far, my favorite character is Lucifer. He's not the fire and brimstone caricature often depicted on screen, but something more akin to a Gaiman/Moffat love child. He's that friend of yours that you known for ever, you love to party with, but find yourself wondering how they got into the mess.their in now as you bail them out of jail.
I love this series! I have completed all 5 books and am waiting, impatiently, for #6 sometime early 2021! If you love urban fantasy, or even if you don't, read these books! The characters are wonderfully developed, the story, while filled with time travel, gods, demons, fairies, warriors, you name it, it captures and and won't let go! I love all of the characters, the good ones and the evil ones! Set primarily in today's Atlanta, the story takes you back in time, forward into time, out of this world and into places you will recognize! The only thing I can say is.....don't delay, start this series, NOW!
I use ratings to decide which books I am going to buy, and I recently decided I am partially responsible for inflating the ratings on books. Either they were 5 star or 1 star. I decided to use the star rating more objectively as follows:
★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will). ★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this. ★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad. ★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time? ★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.
Book 2 isn't as good as book one but it still has its redeemable qualities.
A very intriguing book.it is not my usual type of book, but after reading the first book in this series I was eagerly awaiting. The next book. The characters come to life, especially Kellan. In some ways he reminds me of my son when he was younger. I enjoyed my journey with Kellan, Shannon and the other amazing characters. I am looking forward to continuing this journey with them in the third book.
Juvenile and the characters frankly keep losing any depth they had. You can pretty much replace any woman with another and any man with another man and it all sounds the same. Overall the book comes across as self indulgent and wish fulfillment.
Loving the characters, but I keep feeling like there are missing bits to the story. Little bits that I assume Robert would like to put in side books (which he even hints at at the end).
The characters mostly all feel very real, and the narration is outstanding for nearly every character.
Good continuation, but I'm only giving this book 3 stars. More of a 7/10 as it just didn't captivate me to listen. I'll continue the series as it's pretty good overall.
